Plenty of Jobs, Great Pay: Employers Vie for Skilled Tradespeople There may be a large number of job categories posting anemic hiring stats, but the skilled trades field isn’t one of them. For job hunters who can wield a hammer, tune an engine or weld a submarine panel, employers are rolling out the welcome mat. One key factor prompting this robust hiring spree is an aging workforce. Baby boomers are beginning to retire in droves, yet finding enough skilled tradespeople to replace them is an ongoing problem for employers and staffing agencies who struggle to attract qualified applicants. “In the skilled trades over the years, especially the last 10 to 15 years, qualified or even knowledgeable people have become very scarce,” says Mark Flanagan, the mechanical/ electrical superintendent at Old Dominion University. “One of the big things that we struggle with day to day here in our industry is the lack of skilled tradespeople,” agrees Paul Rodriguez, president of NSC Technologies (www.nsc-tech.com), a staffing agency that places tradespeople in shipyards and other locations. “Every day my clients are reaching out saying we have a need for 50 welders or we need 80 electricians or 12 painters. There are just enormous opportunities out there in our industry to learn a trade and grow with the company.” Not only are skilled tradespeople in high demand, but these are jobs that can’t be easily outsourced, making the trades an excellent choice for those concerned with employment security. For young people and career switchers alike, choosing a viable career field has become a high stakes decision and knowing where the jobs are can be a crucial determiner. 8 | CCEW

“You hear about these young people who get out of college and there are actually not enough jobs,” says Karen Baird, a recruiter with Oceaneering-Marine Services Division in Chesapeake (www.oceaneering.com/careers), a full-service ship repair company. “If you go into the trades, especially here locally, you have all the shipyards, you have Oceaneering, there are just so many avenues open to you to get into this field. We’re all pulling from the same pool of workers and there are only so many of them. I’ve even had to advertise outside the area to find enough workers. “You’re always going to need electricians, you’re always going to need welders, you’re always going to need people who can turn a wrench. I would say that being hands-on in a trade position is probably one of the best things that you can do today.” Along with having job skills that are in demand, tradespeople also bring home some very impressive paychecks. “People think computers or jobs like those are where all the money is,” says Flanagan, “but a good air conditioning tech can make quite a lot of money. Take a company like McQuay International – if they find a good technician who is trainable, will come to work reliably and has the ability to retain what they learn, that person has the ability to make well over $100,000 a year easily.” As Flanagan points out, it’s a rare liberal arts major who can touch that level of pay only a few years out of college. Rodriquez also notes the generous pay. “If you have a skilled trade, you can easily make $50,000 to $150,000 a year,” he reports. “I have almost a thousand people on my payroll and I’m signing these checks for steel fabricators who are clearing $3,000 and that’s on a weekly basis. Some of them work six months, then take six

months off to spend time with their family.” Once you’ve mastered a trade, there are plenty of opportunities for advancement, whether it’s moving into a supervisory or management role or starting your own business. “And you’re able to use your trade in all kinds of businesses,” says Baird. “You can go from our company to working for a steel company for instance. And when we go to the TAP meetings (for military personnel who are transitioning into the civilian workforce), there are oil field representatives, gas industry companies, just all kinds of businesses who are there looking for mechanics, welders and other skilled tradespeople.” There are several pathways into the skilled trades field. The Virginia Community College System, career schools and technical institutes have developed an extensive list of accredited programs that lead to certification, licensure or degrees in a wide variety of skilled trade areas. High school students can get a head start by taking classes developed through public school/community college partnerships. Apprenticeship programs are another option; here in Hampton Roads you’ll find a large assortment of opportunities, from local trade groups to regional employers who offer registered apprenticeships that give new hires the opportunity to earn a paycheck while they work toward their journeyman’s card – and they all welcome diversity in age, gender and race. So whether you are a high school or college student, a career switcher or a first time job seeker, the skilled trades provide jobs that are in demand, pay rewarding wages and offer proven pathways toward advancement – all smart reasons to enter this thriving field.

Profile: Construction Trades The building trades harbor a group of highly-skilled workers whose talents allow them to move from commercial construction site to residential home remodel to property maintenance to specialty industrial work as market conditions shift. In cyclical boom times, they can’t work enough hours to satisfy demand. During downturns, homeowners still need to replace aging roofs, businesses have to maintain their heating and cooling systems, manufacturers are dependent on miles of wiring to deliver uninterrupted power, and roads and highways need to be repaired. In fact, TME Enterprises, a Virginia Department of Transportation subcontractor, hires quite a few tradespeople from the construction sector, including highway maintenance crewmembers and experienced concrete workers. “We have some very young fellows who are basically getting started and we also have people who are in their upper 50s who have been doing construction work over the years, like bricklayers who are looking for something new to do where they’re not at the same site every day,” says Betty Ferreiro, TME office manager. “There is variety involved in this job. When a road or weather emergency happens, the job changes. It’s very diverse. There are ongoing training opportunities and you can advance to specialty crews. If you don’t mind getting your hands dirty, this could be the job for you.” Construction occupations run the gamut from helpers to plumbers to site inspectors and most should see an increase in demand through 2020, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Jobs for brickmasons should grow by 40% through 2020. Openings for plumbers, painters, electricians, drywall installers, carpenters, cement masons and construction equipment operators are expected to increase by 23-34% through that same period. Construction inspector jobs are projected to grow by 18%. The pay can be quite good. Electricians, for example, earned a median hourly wage of $23.20 per hour as of 2010. Top earners claimed an annual median income of over $80,890. Electricians who are skilled in voice, data and video wiring will see the most demand, though in Hampton Roads marine electricians with shipbuilding and ship repair experience are especially sought after. While years ago many people could pick up a construction trade informally, most require special training today. “I would say that’s true for almost every one of the trades in the building industry, and that’s all the way from the folks who are digging footings and pouring concrete to the person who comes in and hooks up your audio/video wiring,” says Jeff Ainslie, president of Ainslie Group, a local building company. Right now, the construction industry is being impacted by an aging workforce. “We have a generational skipping,” explains Ainslie. “Years ago many of these skilled trades were taught through practical experience and then later on through trade schools or apprenticeships, but most of those have gone by the wayside.” To help counter that trend, the Tidewater Builders Association created the Building Trades Academy, where students learn trades that are in demand locally, such as carpentry, HVAC, electrical and plumbing. Other options include training programs at local community colleges and technical schools that cover many of the construction trades, and area builders and subcontractors are often open to apprentices and interns. “If someone is interested in any of the building trades, they can contact the Tidewater Builders Association (757-420-2566) for more information or talk to their guidance counselor,” advises Ainslie.

Profile: Shipbuilding & Ship Repair

Just call Hampton Roads shipyard central. With our high concentration of working ports and naval bases, the area is a natural host for shipbuilders and ship repair firms, from large organizations that employ tens of thousands of workers, to smaller businesses and subcontractors that may hire a few workers or several hundred. For skilled tradespeople who work in the marine sector, there are more well-paying jobs than qualified people to fill them. “One of the big things that we struggle with day to day here in our industry is the lack of skilled tradespeople,” says Paul Rodriguez, president of NSC Technologies (www.nsc-tech.com), a staffing agency that places tradespeople in U.S. Navy shipyards from here to San Diego and Pearl Harbor. “Every day my clients are reaching out saying we have a need for 50 welders or we need 80 electricians or 12 painters. There are just enormous opportunities out there in our industry to learn a trade and grow with the company.” “We’re all pulling from the same pool of workers and there are only so many of them,” says Karen Baird, a recruiter with Oceaneering-Marine Services Division in Chesapeake (www.oceaneering.com/careers). “I’ve even had to advertise outside the area to find enough workers.” Part of the reason is an aging workforce. For instance, Newport News Shipbuilding announced last summer that they expect to hire 10,000 to 15,000 workers over the next five years to replace retiring workers. “There’s a shortage of skilled workers and we have a backlog of work,” explains Brad Mason, Director of Operations at AMSEC, a marine services company with a local presence. That means excellent employment opportunities for a wide variety of shipbuilding trades that include welders, electricians and carpenters. “Inside machinists are something we’re always looking for,” adds Baird. “These are the people who manufacture things for the submarines and vessels we work on. It’s a dying trade because now they have machinery that does all that for you, while back in the day it was more hands on; they would do the cutting, welding, whatever was necessary. It’s rare to find those hands-on tradespeople today.” “There are also laggers who install insulation, pipefitters, and pattern makers,” lists Mason. “You’ve

TO PLACE AN AD CALL 757-222-5454 OR VISIT WWW.HREW.COM got electronics technicians, outside machinists, shipfitters who cut and position metal on the ship, and riggers who use chain falls and cranes to move heavy loads, like a section of the ship that might weigh 900 tons. There are a lot of different skills represented in a shipyard.” Skilled tradespeople can expect opportunities to advance and training resources that are second to none. For instance, many of the shipyards and marine services companies hire apprentices and pay them to learn a trade. “Our starting salaries for an unskilled person averages around $14 an hour, which doesn’t sound like a lot, but if they pick up a skill and work hard, by the end of four years they can be in the $45,000 - $50,000 range and they don’t have the school debt that other folks have incurred for their education,” says Mason. “This can be extremely rewarding work, both from a financial and personal basis.” Rodriguez agrees that the paychecks can be very good. “If you have a skilled trade, you can easily make $50,000 to $150,000 a year,” he reports. “I have almost a thousand people on my payroll and I’m signing these checks for steel fabricators who are clearing $3,000 and that’s on a weekly basis. Some of them work six months, then take six months off to spend time with their family.” The benefits can be quite extensive as well, says Baird. “We all tend to have really good retirement plans at the marine companies and shipyards. Oceaneering has as awesome one.” “And if you go to work on a ship, there are so many opportunities to grow,” says Cathey Botwright, president of Seaside Staffing, an agency that places skilled tradespeople in local shipyards. “Most of the management at these privately-owned shipyards here, from the foremen to the directors to the vice presidents and executive management, they all came from the trades. Metro shipyard and the old Northrup Grumman Newport News, all of their management came from working on the ships. They showed the ability to do more and they all rose from the deck of a ship.” Along with the good pay and opportunities for professional growth, there are also the intangible benefits of working in the shipbuilding industry. “There is the pride in saying hey, I’ve worked on board the USS George H.W. Bush or some other vessel that is used to protect the country,” says Rodriguez. “You’re a part of something that is very significant to the United States. And how many people actually get the opportunity to step onto an aircraft carrier or a nuclear submarine?” Like all regional marine service employers, Rodriguez hires a diversity of people, including women. “In fact, one of our best welders is a woman who works for a client on a job that was initially supposed to be a two-month project. They’ve had her for almost five months now and they don’t want to let her go. “We don’t discriminate – if you have a skilled trade or a desire to learn a trade, if you’re going to show up every day and perform, then we’re interested in you.”

HVAC techs today are as likely to be called on to perform critical repairs to a multi-million dollar piece of industrial equipment as they are to sooth a cranky residential air conditioner into cool submission. “It’s not the same job working with the same old equipment anymore,” points out John Kerner, CEO of the Kerner Group, a multi-company organization that supplies HVAC, electrical, indoor air quality and facility management services. “Instead the HVAC systems are more complex and greener today. “Along with homes and business that need air conditioning and heating for human comfort, almost every manufacturing process requires some kind of heating and cooling system to make an end product and they can’t afford to have a production line affected because that system has failed.” As the field goes increasingly high-tech, the need for certified HVAC mechanics has increased as well: the Bureau of Labor Statistics projects job growth gains of 34% through 2020, which they characterize as much higher than average for the occupations they track. “The last research I did nationwide, the HVAC industry was roughly 50% undermanned,” notes Dennis Brakeville, director of education and an HVAC expert at Tidewater Tech (www.tidewatertechtrades.edu). Mark Flanagan, the mechanical/electrical superintendent at Old Dominion University, has experienced this shortage of qualified HVAC techs first hand. “Here at the university, I’ve been trying to fill an air conditioning spot off and on since 2002. We have equipment like you’ll find in your home but we also have a lot of commercial buildings that are seven, eight, nine stories high. If I can find someone who has a basic understanding of the refrigeration cycle and the ability to learn, I can teach them the ventilation system. But those people are scarce.” Brakeville points to an aging workforce compounded by increased regulatory mandates to explain the growing competition for HVAC techs. “Just as the average welder is reaching age 55, that holds true with the HVAC industry,” he explains. HVAC techs can choose from three specialty areas, he says – “Residential; light commercial, which involves working with things like restaurant equipment, walk-in coolers and freezers; and commercial, such as the big buildings downtown where they deal with the centrifugal chillers and direct digital controls. If you’re an HVAC technician, you’re a mechanical expert, you’re an electrical expert, you’re an air flow expert and you’re a chemist.” Most HVAC techs enter the field after going through a six-month to two-year program offered by career and technical schools or community colleges. “Our program is 45 weeks,” says Brakeville, “and by the end of those 45 weeks, they have already taken their EPA certification exam.” According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median annual pay of HVAC techs is $42,530, though that amount can increase significantly. “Our very first HVAC graduate several years ago went to work at the Hilton Hotel and he started at $27 an hour – I wanted to take his job,” laughs Brakeville. Adds Flanagan, “Take a company like McQuay International – if they find a good technician who is trainable, will come to work reliably and has the ability to retain what they learn, that person has the ability to make well over $100,000 a year easily.” Kerner also notes the hefty paychecks that HVAC techs can earn: “I can tell you that our senior mechanics make more than a school teacher,” he says, “and they have company-provided vehicles that they can drive back and forth to work – it’s one less vehicle they have to buy, insure and maintain. “This is a growing career field that is evolving. The more you put into it, the more you’ll get out of it.”

As home to one of the country’s most important ports, Hampton Roads sends a large number of trucks on their way every day. Drivers routinely transport containers offloaded from ships to regional distribution centers or destinations further inland, then return for more cargo. Other drivers haul inbound loads of food and other goods, while still more make local delivery runs. But as busy as our region is, we still account for only a small portion of the nearly 3.2 million trucks on the road today. There are, very simply, a lot of jobs for truckers out there. “There does seems to be a great need for drivers who have good safety records and high standards to take positions,” confirms Anna Paciulli, office manager for the Chesapeake location of A&R Transport, a national bulk transportation, packaging, distribution and logistics company. The Bureau of Labor statistics confirms that the sector is one of the country’s largest and projects an increase in trucking jobs of 21% through 2020. That rising demand for more drivers – just as many of the older pros reach retirement age – means trucking careers are shifting into high gear. “We have companies that come in and actually recruit our students right out of school,” reports Matthew Woods, an instructor for Tidewater Community College’s truck driving program. Age and gender is no barrier to entry. “We have males and females and our students range in age from 21 to maybe 65,” he says. Drivers can choose over-the-road runs that take them all the way across the country, or work pick-up and delivery hauls within their city or region. “A lot of companies are moving to regional driving now, strategically pinpointing their work centers so that drivers stay in a 200300 mile radius, which gives them more time at home with their families,” says Woods. To enter the industry, drivers must pass a Department of Transportation physical and earn a commercial driver’s license (CDL). Several local career schools and community colleges offer specialized training programs, including TCC’s eight-week program that features state-ofthe-art simulators as well as a skills range for actual wheels-on-theroad driving experience. Once students complete the TCC course, DMV examiners come to the school to conduct the licensing tests. “Most of our students probably start off at about $36,000 a year, but a seasoned truck driver with maybe five years of experience will make anywhere from $50,000 to around $70,000,” Woods says. Aside from good pay and the security of knowing a driving career isn’t likely to be outsourced, trucking also appeals to those who prize their independence. Once drivers pull away from a loading dock, there’s no one looking over their shoulders and that can be very rewarding indeed.

Profile: Aviation and Avionic Equipment Mechanics

While the pilots and air crew are the public face of every successful flight, behind the scenes are the aviation and avionics equipment mechanics who are responsible for keeping the craft in sound repair and safely aloft. The highly-trained techs check every inch of the plane inside and out using sophisticated monitoring equipment; they test every system and structure, keep detailed records for FAA-required inspections, take apart engines and make needed repairs or replacements when necessary, then return the aircraft to the sky. Many specialize in one area of maintenance or with specific aircraft types or systems. Aviation mechanics with the industry-standard A&P certificate are qualified to work with the body and engine of the airplane, says Jerry Lee, director of education at Aviation Institution of Maintenance in Chesapeake (http://aviationmaintenance.edu). A popular related field is avionics, which includes repairing and maintaining navigation, radar, communication and other electronic components. “Until a few years ago, companies looked for either aviation mechanics or avionics techs – today they want someone who can do both jobs,” he says. There are about 170 FAA-certified schools around the country that offer training, including the Aviation Institution of Maintenance, and programs generally span 12- to 24 months. “Our aviation mechanics program by itself runs 19 months and the aviation mechanics program combined with avionics takes 23 months,” reports Lee. His students range from transitioning military personnel who want to continue working with aircraft as civilians to new high school graduates and career switchers who are looking for something interesting to do. Females do quite well in the field, says Lee. Aviation mechanics should see a job growth increase of 6% through 2020 according to Bureau of Labor Statistics and Lee says their graduates are experiencing no problems finding jobs. “As a matter of fact, we actually have employers calling in and asking for students with their A&P certificate because they have openings.” Rondell Davis, corporate admissions trainer, says Aviation Institution of Maintenance graduates have ended up in a wide range of workplaces. “This is definitely a good long-term career field. Graduates are going to work for the major airlines and for regional airlines. Many of our students go to work for government contractors.” Other aviation mechanics find homes in fields like the aerospace and automotive industries since their skill sets transfer easily to these related industries. “We’ve even had Busch Gardens hire some of our graduates to work on the roller coasters since they involve hydraulics,” says Lee. Others go to work for the FAA or move into supervisory positions. The Bureau of Labor Statistics places the median hourly pay at $25.59 and annual pay at $53,220 as of 2010, with high-skill workers earning over $72,250 a year. Job perks include free air travel. Lee says it’s no surprise to him that the field is becoming more popular. “Our school stays packed now.” Adds Davis, “It’s a challenging career, but rewarding – you’re making good money doing a job you love and you get to travel for free. It’s hard to beat that.” So if the idea of a desk-bound job holds little appeal for you, aviation/avionics is one high-flying field that offers technical challenge along with generous pay and great benefits.

Profile: Welders If you want a resume that opens doors everywhere, become a welder. “We can’t find enough anywhere in the country, says Brad Mason, director of operations for AMSEC, a marine services company with a local presence. “And it’s not only our business, but also power plants, large construction sites, manufacturing – they all use welders and it’s hard to find them. Because they are in short supply, welders command excellent wages, notes Thomas Stout, program head for electomechanical controls at Tidewater Community College. “The opportunities can be very lucrative, especially for anyone who can weld aluminum, or is qualified to weld in a nuclear power plant, underwater or do ship repair. Locally, people who want to enter the field can opt for registered apprenticeships or programs developed by community colleges and technical training schools in partnership with regional industries. Shakirah Harrell, the welding coordinator at Tidewater Tech (www.tidewatertechtrades.edu), got her start at Newport News Shipbuilding. “I went through a 4-year apprenticeship program and worked my way up from basic welding to pipe welding, she says. “I worked there for five years and discovered I liked showing other people how to weld, so I started teaching part-time at Tidewater Tech, then full-time and now I’m the program coordinator. Harrell says that there are great opportunities for advancement in the field and that females welders do very well. Mason agrees – “It’s a very complex skill, and one thing that we have found in our industry is that women are extremely good welders. I wish we could find more women who were interested in it. While the field has gone very high tech, with over 100 different processes that can be used, welding still rests on a foundation of four basic fundamentals. “We touch on all four processes in our program and follow the AWS (American Welding Society) guidelines, says Harrell. “Each employer has their own welding test, and we give our students the ability to go out and pass those tests. Then the students receive their certifications through the employer. Some of the local marine staffing agencies have developed their own programs to help alleviate the shortage of welders. Paul Rodriguez, president of NSC Technologies, (www.nsc-tech.com), recently began a program that trains and certifies welders for shipyard work. “They are a dying breed so I purchased a fabrication shop and I’ve got ten welding booths set up with standard shipyard equipment. When you pass our test, we transfer your certification documents to our clients’ quality assurance departments so we can put you to work in a shipyard. We’re actually talking about providing our own apprenticeship program in the second quarter. Top earners reported an annual pay rate of $53,690 as of 2010, while the median hourly wages were $17.04 per hour. Pay is directly related to skill level, a good reason to keep training current. Some welders move into supervisory or management positions while others branch into operating or programming robotic or other welding machines. Welders may find themselves in a variety of environmental conditions, from manning a workbench on the floor of a plant to perching atop a high-rise to working underwater. Most welders work in manufacturingrelated businesses, though in our region, shipyards and their subcontractors are one of the largest sources of jobs. The median salary for welders who choose shipbuilding is a healthy $46,015. About half of all welders work a 40-hour work week, but overtime is common and the Bureau of Labor Statistics notes that one in five welders rack up 50 hours a week or more. Because many firms that employ welders run two or three shifts, it’s possible to work a schedule that accommodates personal and family needs. To sum up, workers in this industry enjoy a good selection of employers competing for their talents, excellent wages, and top benefits – life is good if you’re a welder.

When you think of the skilled trades, it might be a busy construction site or shipyard that springs to mind. But spread out across Hampton Roads is a small army of maintenance workers who are hard at work keeping our infrastructure, our public spaces, our businesses and even our homes in good working order. Just call them the unsung heroes amongst the trades professionals. This broad job category includes everything from grounds and janitorial maintenance crew to the staff operating plant facilities. These jobs are often crucial ones, such as the people at HRSD (Hampton Roads Sanitation District, www.HRSD.com) who help protect our environment. “At HRSD, we hire everyone from plant operators and engineers all the way through instrumentation specialist, electricians, maintenance operators, heavy equipment operators, facility assistants and in my division we have interceptor technicians, pump station supervisors and conveyance system supervisors,” lists Chris Stephan, HRSD’s Chief of Interceptor Operations, North Shore. “A lot of people start at an assistant position where they kind of get their feet wet and find out what we do, decide what they like,” describes Stephan. “The beautiful thing about HRSD is that you can work your way up the chain. It all depends on initiative, drive and capabilities.” And if more training is required to make the job you want a good match, HRSD offers generous education benefits, including college tuition and textbook reimbursement. “We have people who are getting an engineering degree and HRSD pays 100% tuition reimbursement,” Stephan says. “We also have a 4-year apprenticeship program in eight different trades, and upon graduation, you’d be a licensed journeyman in your trade. Veteran’s benefits are available for qualified apprenticeships.” Pay rates are good, with merit increases and a state retirement plan. And unlike a lot of other employment sectors, wastewater treatment and management is not a field that can be outsourced. “It’s a great choice for job security because it’s one of those things people can’t do without,” Stephan points out. HRSD is also attractive to those who like the idea of working for an organization that is committed to safeguarding the CCEW | 17

Then there are the less routine tasks they are called on to perform. “We had a bomb threat on 564 and had to shut down the road,” recalls Ferreiro, “and during weather events we come out and stop traffic, clear the drains, pull up trees, whatever is needed. There is variety involved in this job.” Other good options in this job category include residential and commercial property maintenance. Responding to a growing need, the Building Trades Academy, created by the Tidewater Builders Association (www.tbaonline.org/building_trades_ academy.php) developed a course of study that teaches both property management and maintenance. “We had a number of the apartment management companies come to us and ask us to tailor a program for them,” explains Jeff Ainslie, President of Ainslie Group, a local building company. “They need people who can go into someone’s home, communicate clearly, analyze what the maintenance issue is, determine how to take care of it and then make it happen very quickly. It’s been a very successful program for both the students and the management companies.” The Bureau of Labor Statistics expects the need for general maintenance and repair workers to increase by 11% through 2020 and notes that the annual median pay in 2010 was $34,730. Industrial machinery mechanics and maintenance workers should see an increased need of 19% through 2020 and their median pay in 2010 was $44,160/yr. Specialty workers and supervisors command higher wages. Educational requirements vary by job from a high school diploma to a college degree and workers often find good opportunities for career advancement.
