Seasonal Employers Roll Out the Welcome Mat Area beaches and theme parks are already luring locals out into the sun, and in just a few short weeks a throng of funseeking tourists will join them. That means hotels, restaurants, shops and a host of recreational venues are all adding seasonal staff right now. The large number of job openings available encompasses a diverse range of skills, experience levels and interests. The hotels, resorts and restaurants that line the oceanfront, for instance, typically hire everyone from hostesses, bartenders, servers, server assistants and cooks for their food and beverage operations, to housekeepers, front desk people, engineering staff, pool attendants and maintenance personnel to help care for hotel guests. “I would say we roughly double our hourly staff during our peak season from Memorial Day to Labor Day,” estimates Johanna Heidler, an HR specialist with Gold Key/ PHR Hotels and Resorts. Seasonal jobs at theme and water parks not only offer summer income, but also a touch of fun. And as an extra perk, the larger
theme and water parks usually give employees their own season passes along with additional free tickets to share with family and friends. Theme and water park jobs run the gamut from ticket takers to mascots in full costume. Employees host birthday parties, operate rides, landscape park grounds, cook and serve food, man information booths, conduct tours, handle group sales, sell products in park stores, and stage festive entertainment events. At water parks, lifeguards protect guests and maintenance workers test the water and keep it
sparkling clean. Don’t overlook smaller recreational venues like go-kart tracks, miniature golf courses and businesses that rent bicycles and jet skis. And for those with a knack for sales, there’s everything from marketing opportunities with resort chains to cashier jobs at souvenir shops.
