Skilled Trades

Open Doors to Opportunity It’s a career field that’s in high demand, it pays very well, it can be entered without taking on massive college loan debt and there are plenty of openings right here in our own backyard. For new grads and career switchers alike, the skilled trades open the door to a wealth of opportunities. According to a report released a few months ago by the Manhattan Institute (www.manhattaninstitute.org/html/issues-2016-are-skilled-tradesdoomed-decline-9380.html), six of the 10 fastestgrowing industries are reliant on the skilled trades. These are jobs that often pay as well, if not better, than the salaries many college grads bring home. And most skilled tradespeople begin their careers backed by short-term certification courses, technical training programs, an associate’s degree or an apprenticeship – no bachelor’s degree required. With all that going them, you’d think skilled trades jobs would be easy to fill. Unfortunately, notes the Institute, employers are running up against a skills gap, leaving an estimated 500,000 jobs unfilled in fields ranging from construction to manufacturing. In fact, skilled trades openings have been the hardest to staff for the last six years. Corey McCray, vice president for the Center for Workplace Solutions at Tidewater Community College, would like to see that change. Not only is he spreading the word about the excellent career opportunities found in the trades, but TCC offers a number of certification courses and associate degree programs that allow students to enter the workforce quickly, yet continue their education at any point they desire. “Our students can earn an entry-level credential that qualifies them for immediate employment, but it’s stackable toward additional certifications or an associate’s degree,” explains McCray. “So they’re no longer in a position where they have to choose between work or college. They can do both if that’s their desire – these are training opportunities that stay with them for a lifetime.” Additional training is often paid for by employers. “We see it all the time,” says McCray. “Students earn their initial certification, begin a job, then return to us to work toward their 6 | CCEW

associate’s degree with tuition assistance. They get that first credential, and from there, they just take off. “Our programs are based on labor market data and input from industry so we work to make certain these are real career opportunities, it’s not that $9$10 an hour job. As you earn these credentials, you can move from entry level to supervisor to upperlevel management along that continuum. There are no limits.” Bobby Jackson, Old Dominion University’s mechanical/electrical shop manager, loves working for the university, and it didn’t take a Ph.D. to earn his spot on the employee roster. “I started in the trades and that’s where I’ve always worked,” says Jackson, who began his career as a helper at the Port of Virginia, learning the HVAC and electrical fields and moving up into management. “The trades are not a dead end career,” he says. Another popular option? Registered apprenticeships that allow tradespeople to earn while they learn. “I was pretty fortunate because the port paid for my education; that was a really good deal,” notes Jackson. Apprentices are full-time employees, with benefits, who learn their occupation through a combination of classwork and hands-on training. “Apprentices earn an hourly rate and they get a guaranteed increase once a year, unless the employer decides to pay them more than the graduated scale,” says Rick Brooks, with the Virginia Department of Labor and Industry. “When employers choose an apprentice, they’re choosing future leaders,” adds Brooks. Much of the leadership at local shipyards, for example, came up through apprenticeships. Visit www.doli.virginia. gov and click on the Search Apprenticeship tab to learn more. The skilled trades field represents hundreds of individual job categories that cater to a wide variety

of talents and career goals. “Mechatronics didn’t even exist back in the day, and the whole field of advanced manufacturing has just changed so much,” notes Mike Summers, interim vice president for student affairs and provost at TCC’s Virginia Beach Campus. “It’s full of electronics and robots. Any manufacturing in this country is now clean and high tech, and it’s certainly a field that continues to grow. “And in our region, the shipyards represent tremendous career opportunities. We build and repair the most sophisticated naval vessels in the world. If you learn welding or pipefitting and go to work for one of these shipyards, you’ll be turning $80,000 in a couple of years. You can raise a family on that. “Then we’ve got the port and all the logistic jobs that go with that. These are just really exciting fields today. It’s all just a matter of finding what interests you,” says Summers. A good resource to begin researching a career in the skilled trades is the Virginia Community College System’s online Wizard (www.vawizard.org), which offers a regional overview of available jobs, how much they pay and what type of training is necessary to work in that field. McCray suggests checking out some of the certification and degree programs TCC offers by going to tcc.edu and clicking on the workforce development banner. “If you’re exploring your options and don’t really know how to launch your career or whether the field you’re interested in is really what you want to do with your life, it can help to earn a short-term credential, go through that initial training and become exposed to that industry, understand what it’s about,” he says. Once you settle on a trade, with training and a willingness to work, you’ll be successful says ODU’s Jackson. “If you’ve got that, then the jobs are there.” ■

Truck Drivers How important is trucking to the national economy? “If you look at all the freight tonnage that moves around the country, trucks haul nearly 70 percent of it,” says Bob Costello, chief economic advisor for ATA (American Trucking Associations). “What we always say is that if you bought it, it was on a truck at some point.” And that’s a problem. “We’re coming out of the great recession, we’re moving more freight, and we’re short about 48,000 drivers,” Costello says. “If things don’t change, in ten years that number could balloon to 175,000.” That shortage of drivers means there are plenty of jobs available. “And wages, especially in some of the longer haul segments where the shortage is most acute, have been going up aggressively and will continue to go up aggressively,” says Costello, who places the median pay for drivers at about $55,000 a year. “And that’s only the start of it because you’re also going to get health insurance, you’re going to get a 401(k), you’re going to get paid time off and you’re going to get life insurance. I always tell drivers if you’re not getting that stuff, you need to find another company to work for, it’s out there. And by the way, this is for a non-union job.” To enter the field, drivers typically take a course that preps them for the CDL (commercial driver’s license) exam. For students who take out a school loan to pay for the program, Costello has good news. “Once you get that commercial driver’s license and go to work for a trucking company, most of them will pay about $200 a month until that loan is paid off,” he says. Today’s truckers can expect to drive wellappointed trucks that ride comfortably and are packed with job-easing technology. Some trucks are even equipped with an automatic transmission and cruise control. “And you’re going to have an onboard computer system that will dispatch you and keep track of your hours so you don’t have to fill out a paper log.” Then there’s the safety technology, like blind spot detection and warnings if you get too close to another vehicle. Regulated hours of service safeguard drivers from working to the point of sleepiness, satellite navigation is the norm, and over-the-road drivers bring all the comforts of home with them, such as microwaves, small

refrigerators, sinks, and televisions. “And a lot of companies have a great pet policy, so you can bring your pet on the road with you,” Costello says. The trucking culture is a good match for independent thinkers. “You’re going to have to make decisions, you’re going to have to think things through,” says Costello. “When you get dispatched, they’re going to tell you where you’ve got to go, but not necessarily how to get there. If you are a person who needs to be micro-managed, this is not for you.” Many truckers say they enjoy the intangible rewards of the job. “Drivers know that without them, collectively, this economy goes nowhere,” Costello says. Finding a field where your skills are in demand is a welcome change for many who move into trucking from less secure jobs. Rebecca Higginbotham, a program coordinator for ATI’s commercial driving program (www.auto.edu), says the school can’t train drivers fast enough to meet demand. “We have recruiters come in from different companies all the time and I’d say 90 percent of our students have job offers before they even graduate,” she says. ATI driving students take either morning or evening classes; once they’ve completed the eight-week program, they’re ready for VDOT’s commercial driver’s license exam. Whether her students slide into the drivers’ seats of tractor-trailers, local delivery trucks, buses or heavy commercial vehicles, Higginbotham says their career prospects are all the same – “They’ll always have a job. I see nothing but growth for drivers in the future.” ■

Skilled tradespeople in the construction industry are extremely adaptable to changing economic conditions, giving them an enviable resilience. In cyclical boom times, they can’t work enough hours to satisfy demand. During downturns, their talents make way for them in related sectors – homeowners still need to replace aging roofs, businesses have to maintain their heating and cooling systems, and manufacturers are dependent on miles of wiring to deliver uninterrupted power. Construction occupations run the gamut from helpers to drywall installers to site inspectors and most should see an increase in demand through 2024, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Jobs for solar photovoltaic installers, for example, should grow by 24% over the next eight years. Openings for brick masons, electricians, insulation workers, elevator installers, roofers, construction laborers and helpers, plumbers, and construction equipment operators are expected to increase by 10-15% through that same period. Pay rates are quite good. Electricians earn a median hourly wage of $24.57 per hour with top earners claiming an annual median income of over $85,000. Plumbers command a median $50,660 per year and brick masons a median $47,650 /yr. Structural iron workers make a median $48,200 a year. Entry-level laborers earn a median $30,190 /yr. with excellent growth opportunities. Experienced construction tradespeople who move into inspection positions make $56,040 a year. In commercial construction, elevator installers bring home a median $78,620. Training programs at high schools, local community colleges and technical schools cover many of these trades. Another option is the Building Trades Academy, created by the Tidewater Builders Association to help students learn those trades in special demand locally.

“Our program started in 1978 with seed funds from the federal government to train students who are economically disadvantaged at no cost to them,” says Erasto Beard, staff vice president at the academy. One of the programs the academy offers is a three-month building maintenance program with courses in carpentry, plumbing, HVAC, electrical wiring and other skills. Graduates are finding jobs with a variety of employers. “These are very good jobs, most of them salaried with benefits, and there’s a career ladder,” Beard says. “One student may go to work for a remodeler and another student can come out of the same class and be hired by an apartment community or even a builder. “One of the things we tell our students all the time is that college is a great option, but it’s not for everybody, and the building trades is a phenomenal career option. You’ll find people who are very, very successful. We’ve got TBA members who never went to college and they have done extremely well,” says Beard. “Our graduates learn skills that will last them a lifetime and take them as far as they want to go,” says Megan Hill, recruitment and placement coordinator. “There’s not a single building or home out there that doesn’t need some type of maintenance or care, whether it’s on a small scale or large, so these are jobs that really don’t ever expire.” Students attend either morning or afternoon classes each weekday, with plenty of hands-on training. “The application is on our website (www. buildingtradesacademy.com),” says Beard. “This can be a springboard to some really major opportunities that many people don’t even know exist,” says Hill, who loves to see students who have been out of work or stuck in dead end jobs move into rewarding careers. “For many, it’s life changing.” ■

again; you might see one problem one day and the next you’ll see something completely different,” says Rubin. The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects a 5% growth rate in automotive mechanic and tech openings through 2024, with a median hourly pay rate of $18.20. Experienced mechanics with formal automotive training and top-notch diagnostic and computer skills can command more than $63,000 a year. There can be other perks as well. Right now, HRT (Hampton Roads Transit) is offering skilled mechanics a $2,000 sign-on bonus, generous benefits and opportunities for advancement. “There is so much opportunity for any student who wants to work,” says Rubin. “Cars aren’t going away. They may evolve, but even with new technology, like cars that drive themselves, you still have to have people who can diagnose and repair them. This is a skill you can take anywhere.” Maund agrees – “If you go to school for auto mechanics, you will find work if you want it – and it will be a career, it won’t be a job.” ■

RIB BO NP RO GR AM

If you enjoy working with your mind as much as your hands, this is the field to go into, says Mark Maund, the auto program coordinator at Tidewater Tech. To get started, technicians earn either an associate’s degree or diploma in automotive technology, which prepares them for the ASE certification exams, the industry standard. Tidewater Tech’s program takes 45 weeks to complete, and Maund regularly places graduates in local dealerships, independent repair shops and other workplaces, sometimes before they’ve even finished the program. At TCC, Rubin sees students who already hold degrees taking seats next to new high school grads. “We have students with associate’s degrees, bachelor’s degrees, even a couple who have master’s degrees,” he says. “Some of them couldn’t find jobs, and some found work they didn’t like well enough to do for the rest of their lives. It’s amazing how well people do when they find something they’re passionate about. “This is a field for people who like to solve problems. It’s not the same routine over and over

YE LL OW

If you think the auto technology available to the average driver is impressive – backup cameras, infotainment systems, keyless entry – you should see what the automotive technicians are working with. Tools of the trade include wireless scanning devices, computerized diagnosis equipment, and microchipped replacement parts. Even the wrenches are ergonomically shaped. It’s hightech paired with high-touch for those who enjoy troubleshooting. Yes, students can still expect to spend handson time repairing engines, brakes and other auto systems – they’ll just bring high-tech tools and computer savvy to each job. “They’re not auto mechanics anymore, they’re technicians,” says Rubin Beno, director of TCC’s Regional Automotive Center. “And the reason for that is the complexity of the vehicles they work on. Not only do they perform maintenance work, but they have to be able to diagnose and repair the vehicle, they have to make determinations, read a wiring diagram, follow a flow chart, and understand computer networking – it’s amazing the technology that goes into these vehicles.”

Maintenance Trades Anything a skilled tradesperson builds – a highway, a power plant, an apartment building – requires another skilled tradesperson to maintain. Make that a small army of skilled tradespeople. From public parks to office towers to schools, you’ll find grounds and janitorial maintenance crews mowing and cleaning. At factories, technicians lubricate and test huge mechanical systems. Along roadways, crews repair damaged asphalt and clear drainage ditches. Clearly, the roster of maintenance trades professionals is a diverse one. In addition to being sought after by private industry, maintenance tradespeople are also recruited by the communities they live in. For instance, HRSD (Hampton Roads Sanitation District) attracts those who like the idea of working for an organization that is committed to safeguarding the environment and providing services that residents depend on. “At HRSD, we hire everyone from plant operators and engineers all the way through instrumentation specialist, electricians, maintenance operators, heavy equipment operators, facility assistants and in my division we have interceptor technicians, pump station supervisors and conveyance system supervisors,” lists Chris Stephan, HRSD’s Chief of Interceptor Operations, North Shore. “A lot of people start at an assistant position where they kind of get their feet wet and find out what we do, decide what they like,” describes Stephan. “The beautiful thing about HRSD is that you can work your way up the chain. It all depends on initiative, drive and capabilities.” If more training is required to make the job you want a good match, HRSD offers generous education benefits, including 4-year apprenticeship programs in eight different trades. “Upon graduation, you’d be a licensed journeyman in your trade,” Stephan says. Unlike a lot of other employment sectors, wastewater treatment and management is not a field that can be outsourced. “It’s not only job security and excellent benefits, but you also have the added benefit of a purpose in your job,” says Stephan. “You can go into a lot of jobs, and they’re good jobs, very honorable, but here we’re actively working to protect the environment.” One of the hallmarks of a skilled trades career is exceptional opportunity for advancement. John McCarthy, Program Coordinator at Tidewater Tech, often tells his students to stop thinking in terms of limits. “The only limit is your imagination,” he says. “You can do anything in these trades that you need to do. “We have a building maintenance program here – every building needs somebody to take care of it. I have a friend who does that kind of work in commercial real estate and he’s making upwards of $70,000 a year doing a blue collar job. Young people have been brainwashed into thinking that you have to wear a suit and tie to work to be successful.” The Bureau of Labor Statistics expects the need for general maintenance and repair workers to increase by 6% through 2024. ■

Reducing human impact on the environment for over 75 years. Future generations will inherit clean waterways and be able to keep them clean.
