Hospitals, corporate high-rises, resorts, state-of-the-art tech facilities, universities – a skilled trade will open the door to just about any workplace that interests you. Bobby Jackson, Old Dominion University’s Mechanical/Electrical Shop Manager, loves working for the university, and it didn’t take a Ph.D. to earn his spot on the employee roster. “I started in the trades and that’s where I’ve always worked,” says Jackson, who began his career as a helper at the Port of Virginia, learning the HVAC and electrical fields and moving up into management. “The trades are not a dead end career,” Jackson says. Not only do the skilled trades pay well, but tradespeople also avoid the burgeoning cost of earning a traditional 4-year degree. Local community colleges and technical training schools offer short-term certification programs in a number of trades, as well as associate degree programs that can be completed in as little as a year and a half. Another popular option? Apprenticeships and employer-paid training programs that allow tradespeople to earn while they learn. “I was pretty fortunate because the port paid for my education; that was a really good deal,” notes Jackson. Jackson manages ODU’s electricians, HVAC mechanics, plumbers and preventative maintenance staff. “It’s a very family-oriented place to work, people take care of each other, the pay is good, the benefits are good, the retirement plan is good – it’s a win-win all the way around,” he says. The skilled trades field represents hundreds of individual job categories that cater to a wide variety of talents and interests, and the competition for good tradespeople means there is a broad range of employers to choose from. To be successful in the trades, all it takes is a willingness to work and a willingness to learn, says Jackson. “If you’ve got that, then the jobs are there.” ■ 4 | CCEW

Truck Drivers The ATA (American Trucking Associations) places the number of truck drivers on the road at 3.5 million, making that job sector one of the largest in the country – and it’s only expected to grow. Most truckers get started by taking a driver’s training course that preps them for the CDL (commercial driver’s license) exam. For students who take out a school loan to pay for their course, Bob Costello, Chief Economic Advisor for the ATA, has good news: “Once you get that commercial driver’s license and go to work for a trucking company, most of them will pay about $200 a month until that loan is paid off,” he says. “And wages, especially in some of the longer haul segments where the driver shortage is most acute, have been going up aggressively and will continue to go up aggressively.” Costello places the median pay for drivers at about $55,000 a year – “And that’s only the start of it because you’re also going to get health insurance, a 401(k), paid time off and life insurance.” Today’s truckers can expect to drive well-appointed trucks that ride comfortably and are packed with job-easing technology. Some trucks are even equipped with an automatic transmission and cruise control. Then there’s the safety technology, like blind spot detection and warnings if you get too close to another vehicle. Regulated hours of service safeguard drivers from working to the point of sleepiness, satellite navigation is the norm, and over-the-road drivers bring all the comforts of home with them, such as microwaves, small refrigerators, sinks, and televisions. “And a lot of companies have a great pet policy, so you can bring your pet on the road with you,” Costello says. Finding a field where your skills are in demand is a welcome change for many who move into trucking from less secure jobs. Rebecca Higginbotham, Program Coordinator for ATI’s commercial driving program, says the school can’t train drivers fast enough to meet demand. “We have recruiters come in from different companies all the time and I’d say 90 percent of our students have job offers before they even graduate,” she says.

At VDOT you are more than an employee. You are a resource of skills, ideas and inspiration. VDOT has opportunities for all levels in all areas of the organization.

Now Hiring for Engineers, Managers, Maintenance Operators and more! Get your career moving with VDOT!

ATI driving students take either morning or evening classes; once they’ve completed the eight-week program, they’re ready for VDOT’s commercial driver’s license exam. Whether her students slide into the drivers’ seats of tractor-trailers, local delivery trucks, buses or heavy commercial vehicles, Higginbotham says their career prospects are all the same – “They’ll always have a job. We have some students who don’t want to do over-the-road driving and they go to work for HRT or the schools driving buses. And at HRT, you have the opportunity to start out in buses and move to light rail. I see nothing but growth in the future.” ■

Construction Trades If building a long-term career is at the top of your job-hunting list, then look no further than the building trades. Skilled tradespeople in this field are extremely adaptable to changing economic conditions, giving them an enviable resilience. In cyclical boom times, they can’t work enough hours to satisfy demand. During downturns, their talents make way for them in related sectors – homeowners still need to replace aging roofs, businesses have to maintain their heating and cooling systems, and manufacturers are dependent on miles of wiring to deliver uninterrupted power. Construction occupations run the gamut from helpers to drywall installers to site inspectors and most should see an increase in demand through 2024, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Pay rates are quite good. Electricians earn a median hourly wage of $24.57 per hour with top earners claiming an annual median income of over $85,000. Plumbers command a median $50,660 per year and brickmasons a median $47,650 /yr. Structural iron workers make a median $48,200 a year Entry-level laborers earn a median $30,190 /yr. with excellent growth opportunities. Experienced construction tradespeople who move into inspection positions make $56,040 a year. In commercial construction, elevator installers bring home a median $78,620. While years ago many people could pick up a construction trade informally, most require special training today, especially as technology impacts the field. “I would say that’s true for almost every one of the trades in the building industry, and that’s all the way from the folks who are digging footings and pouring concrete to the person who comes in and hooks up your audio/ video wiring,” says Jeff Ainslie, President of Ainslie Group, a local building company. Part of that need for more specialized training rests with the increasingly sophisticated equipment you’ll find on a construction site. While the lumbering bulldozer may look oldschool from the outside, inside, the machine has gone thoroughly high tech. “The heavy equipment they manufacture today requires a lot of technical expertise,” says Ainslie. “Instead of the bulldozers where you basically had two foot pedals and two sticks, Caterpillar has these devices that have a heads up display. They have gloves you put your hands into and based on what you do with your hands, the machine responds. It’s almost like digging with your hands – the machine mimics everything that you do.” Training programs at high schools, local community colleges and technical schools cover many of these trades. Another option is the Building Trades Academy, created by the Tidewater Builders Association to help students learn those trades in special demand locally. “Our program started in 1978 with seed funds from the federal government to train students who are economically disadvantaged at no cost to them,” says Erasto Beard, Staff Vice President at the academy.

TO PLACE AN AD CALL 757-446-2900 OR VISIT WWW.HREW.COM One of the programs the academy offers is a three-month building maintenance program with courses in carpentry, plumbing, HVAC, electrical wiring and other skills. Graduates are finding jobs with a variety of employers. “These are very good jobs, most of them salaried with benefits, and there’s a career ladder,” Beard says. “One student may go to work for a remodeler and another student can come out of the same class and be hired by an apartment community or even a builder. “One of the things we tell our students all the time is that college is a great option, but it’s not for everybody, and the building trades is a phenomenal career option. You’ll find people who are very, very successful. We’ve got TBA members who never went to college and they have done extremely well.” “Our graduates learn skills that will last them a lifetime and take them as far as they want to go,” says Megan Hill, Recruitment and Placement Coordinator. “There’s not a single building or home out there that doesn’t need some type of maintenance or care, whether it’s on a small scale or large, so these are jobs that really don’t ever expire.” Students attend either morning or afternoon classes each weekday, with plenty of hands-on training. “The application is on our website (www.buildingtradesacademy. com),” says Beard. “This can be a springboard to some really major opportunities that many people don’t even know exist,” says Hill, who loves to see students who have been out of work or stuck in dead end jobs move into rewarding careers. “For many, it’s life changing.” ■

Automotive Technicians For those with a knack for problem solving, welcome to the wellpaying world of automotive techs. This rapidly evolving field has been heavily impacted by technology, from diagnostic software to common hand tools. “Even the wrenches are shaped differently – they’re made to fit your hand ergonomically so you don’t develop joint problems after 20 or so years of using them on the job,â€? says Mark Maund, Auto Program Coordinator at Tidewater Tech. Computerized diagnostic equipment has been in place awhile now, but even that is seeing significant upgrades. “It’s wireless,â€? says Maund. “We’ve got so many computer tools and pieces of equipment to attach to a car and you used to plug those wires into the dashboard. Now you can pick up that information on a computer in the shop with your scanning device while the car is outside.â€? Yes, students can still expect to spend hands-on time repairing engines, brakes and other auto systems – they’ll just bring high-tech tools and computer savvy to each job. If you enjoy working with your mind as much as your hands, this is the field to go into, says Maund. Females do as well as males, and the field attracts new high school grads as well as career switchers and military veterans. Those with entrepreneurial leanings often open their own shops. “As long as you have the people skills and pick up some business knowledge so you’ll know how to handle things like the taxes and the benefits, you can definitely go into business for yourself,â€? says Maund. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, automotive techs earn a median hourly pay rate of $17.84; experienced technicians with formal automotive training and top-notch diagnostic and computer skills can command more than $62,000 a year. There can be other perks as well. Right now, HRT (Hampton Roads Transit) is offering skilled mechanics a $2,000 sign-on bonus, generous benefits and opportunities for advancement. “If you go to school for auto mechanics, you will find work if you want it – and it will be a career, it won’t be a job,â€? Maund says. â–

Maintenance Trades One of the hallmarks of a skilled trades career is exceptional opportunity for advancement. John McCarthy, Program Coordinator at Tidewater Tech, often tells his students to stop thinking in terms of limits. “The only limit is your imagination,” he says. “You can do anything in these trades that you need to do. “We have a building maintenance program here – every building needs somebody to take care of it. I have a friend who does that kind of work in commercial real estate and he’s making upwards of $70,000 a year doing a blue collar job. Young people have been brainwashed into thinking that you have to wear a suit and tie to work to be successful.” In addition to being sought after by private industry, maintenance tradespeople are also recruited by the communities they live in. For instance, HRSD (Hampton Roads Sanitation District) attracts those who like the idea of working for an organization that is committed to safeguarding the environment and providing services that residents depend on. “At HRSD, we hire everyone from plant operators and engineers all the way through instrumentation specialist, electricians, maintenance operators, heavy equipment operators, facility assistants and in my division we have interceptor technicians, pump station supervisors and conveyance system supervisors,” lists Chris Stephan, HRSD’s Chief of Interceptor Operations, North Shore. “A lot of people start at an assistant position where they kind of get their feet wet and find out what we do, decide what they like,” describes Stephan. “The beautiful thing about HRSD is that you can work your way up the chain. It all depends on initiative, drive and capabilities.” If more training is required to make the job you want a good match, HRSD offers generous education benefits, including 4-year apprenticeship programs in eight different trades. “Upon graduation, you’d be a licensed journeyman in your trade,” Stephan says. Unlike a lot of other employment sectors, wastewater treatment and management is not a field that can be outsourced. “It’s not only job security and excellent benefits, but you also have the added benefit of a purpose in your job,” says Stephan. “You can go into a lot of jobs, and they’re good jobs, very honorable, but here we’re actively working to protect the environment.” Other good options in this job category include municipal, commercial and residential property maintenance. From public parks to office towers to schools, you’ll find grounds and janitorial maintenance crews mowing and cleaning. At factories, technicians lubricate and test huge mechanical systems. And along roadways, crews repair damaged asphalt and clear drainage ditches. Clearly, the roster of maintenance professionals is a diverse one. The Bureau of Labor Statistics expects the need for general maintenance and repair workers to increase by 6% through 2024. ■

Reducing human impact on the environment for over 75 years. Future generations will inherit clean waterways and be able to keep them clean.

Welding Skilled welders are in an enviable position. Not only do they command excellent wages, but they can also select from a large assortment of industries and employers throughout the country vying for their expertise. Life is good if you’re a welder. “There are tons of opportunities for people who are coming into the field as older workers start to retire,” says John McCarthy, the Welding Program Coordinator at Tidewater Tech. “We see it every day as employers try to fill that gap, so we have partnerships with local companies who are working with us to try and bring some younger people into the field.” To enter the field, welders earn an industryaccredited certification, usually after completing a training program. “To become a welder, it takes a lot less time and investment than attending a 4-year institution to receive your bachelor’s degree,” notes Nick D’Antonio, Project Manager at the Manufacturing Institute. “So you could

potentially be making higher wages than someone who has put themselves in greater debt for lower wages.” Welding students at Tidewater Tech enroll in a 30-week course, says McCarthy. “After they complete the course they can go in at maybe two or three pay grades above the person who hasn’t had any training at all, especially places like Newport News Shipbuilding – we work with them all the time.” According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, top earners report an annual pay rate of over $58,590, while the median hourly wages are $17.99 per hour. Welding engineers command a median $84,000 a year and welders who are willing to travel and work under challenging conditions can earn well over $100,000 a year. Some welders move into supervisory or management positions while others branch into programming or operating robotic and other welding machines. Because many firms that

employ welders run two or three shifts, it’s possible to work a schedule that accommodates personal and family needs. Welders may find themselves in a variety of environmental conditions, from manning a workbench on the floor of a plant to perching atop a high-rise to working underwater. Most welders work in manufacturing-related businesses, though in our region, shipyards and their subcontractors are one of the largest sources of jobs. This is a field that enthusiastically welcomes female workers. “In my career at Newport News Shipbuilding, females were some of the best welders I dealt with,” shares McCarthy. “The female students in our program do really well.” Career switchers are welcome as well. “We have a lot of military students,” McCarthy says, “and I had one guy graduate not too long ago who had a degree in psychology.” In demand and well paid – a welding career is hard to beat. ■
