TRADING UP SKILLED TRADESPEOPLE IN DEMAND
How much demand is there for skilled tradespeople? Let’s just say that employer welcome mats rarely get any larger. It’s a simple equation of supply and demand. “The skilled trades are actually 60 to 65 percent undermanned right now,” explains Dennis Brakeville, Tidewater Tech’s Director of Education. “Partially it’s because so many in the trades are getting ready to retire.” Beno Rubin, Director of TCC’s Regional Automotive Center, agrees. “The industry needs these technicians. With an aging workforce, you have so many who have left or are getting ready to leave and they’re taking all that knowledge with them. So employers are looking for a steady stream of up and coming highlyskilled replacements.” The result? “The trades are booming, booming, booming,” says Tony Davezan, Recruiting Manager for Ameri-Force, a marine, industrial and professional staffing agency. To find enough skilled workers, some employers are snatching up students before they complete their training programs. “We had one welding student who asked to finish her program early because she already had job in South Dakota, so we allowed her to test out a little early,” says Gary Rose, who heads up TCC’s welding program. “That’s something 6 | CCEW
many schools are facing, especially those that are feeding into the oil and fracking industries – they’re having trouble keeping students enrolled because employers are offering the students good pay before they’ve actually finished their certification.” This is welcome news to many who are looking for alternatives to low paying jobs or stalled careers. “We get a lot of people who have completed a 4-year degree and they still can’t find a good paying job,” Brakeville reports. Rubin sees students who already hold degrees filling his classrooms as well. “We have students with associate’s degrees, bachelor’s degrees, even a couple who have master’s degrees. Some of them couldn’t find jobs, and some found work they didn’t like well enough to do for the rest of their lives. We also have students who started out as traditional college freshmen but didn’t do well because they weren’t engaged; they come to us and become very successful doing something they genuinely like. It’s amazing how well people do when they find something they’re passionate about.” That level of satisfaction is common in the skilled trades. “For me, welding is an opportunity to express myself as an individual, both professionally and as an artist,” says
Rose. “People don’t realize how much art comes into play in this field.” There’s also the reward of meeting challenges, says Ann Ambrose, TCC’s Dean of Business, Public Services and Technologies. “We had a high school camp here last summer to expose girls to non-traditional industry jobs, and I had one girl tell me she was surprised to find so much
science involved in HVAC – she was excited about it.” Sums up Rubin – “At the end of the day, this is a field that allows you to support a family, solve interesting challenges and grow as an individual, and that’s important. All you have to do is just be willing to work for it.”

Shipbuilding & Ship Repair When you look at regional economic impact, diversity of occupations, and the sheer number of skilled trades jobs available, in Hampton Roads, shipbuilding is king. With our high concentration of working ports and naval bases, the area is a natural host for shipbuilders and ship repair firms, from large organizations that employ tens of thousands of workers, to smaller businesses and subcontractors that may hire a few workers or several hundred. For skilled tradespeople who work in the marine sector, there are more well-paying jobs than qualified people to fill them. “The shipbuilding field is flourishing,” confirms Tony Davezan, Recruiting Manager for Ameri-Force, a marine, industrial and professional staffing agency. “Things aren’t slowing down, they’re picking up.” That means excellent employment opportunities for the shipyard trades. “Right now, it’s a skilled trades market because there are so many needs in the industry,” Davezan says. “If you’re a first class shipfitter or pipefitter for instance, you can pick and choose where you want to go and what you want to do because it’s all about supply and demand. “Sheet metal mechanics are also in demand, and we certainly can’t find enough aluminum or TIG welders,” he says. “Painter/blasters can make a lot of money and marine electricians do very well. There’s such a shortage of workers going into these fields, in part because people don’t really know about these crafts, how important they are, and the opportunities they represent.”
Tweet a Friend in need: “Red Badge Jobs! @ShipyardNow”
Once they master their craft, shipyard tradespeople can expect opportunities to advance and training resources that are second to none. For instance, much of the management at area shipyards came from the skilled trades. “And the money is very good,” says Davezan. So good, in fact, that many in the shipyard trades can afford to take lengthy blocks of time off, he says. “That happens all the time. Before Thanksgiving someone will take the rest of the year off and a week or two into the New Year. They’ve accumulated enough money that they can afford to have that extended time to rest, spend time with family, just enjoy themselves. “Without a doubt, what they do is an art and a skill. They make a very good living and the people we talk to on a daily basis love what they do.”

HVAC Technician SERVICE TECHNICIANS NEEDED Voted one of the Best Places To Work in Hampton Roads for 4 years!
757-424-1000 www.russellshvac.com
HVAC techs today are as likely to be called on to perform critical repairs to a multi-million dollar piece of industrial equipment as they are to coax an aging residential furnace into producing warmth on a brrrrr winter day. “This field has changed significantly in the past 10 years because of advances in technology,” says Dave Philpott, HVAC Program Coordinator at ATI (Advanced Technology Institute). “We install HVAC units that communicate wirelessly, and work on smart home systems you access through an app on your phone now.” HVAC techs are not only technologically savvy – they can also lay claim to most wanted status. The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects a job growth rate of 21% through 2022, which it characterizes as faster than average. “Our students go to work for both large and small HVAC companies, HVAC supply houses, even the shipyards,” lists Philpott. “With HVAC,
there are so many different opportunities open to you. You can do installation in homes, or if you like computers you can build the automated systems used at places like universities. It’s a field where you can start your own business once you’ve been working for a while. Then there’s the refrigeration side, which is so important to hospitals and grocery stores. “Everybody has a need for heating and air conditioning. These jobs aren’t going away.” ATI offers an 11-month diploma program and a 15-month associate of occupational studies degree. Many students are hired before they even graduate, says Philpott, and get a jumpstart on their careers while finishing school. “You don’t need a background in HVAC; we’ll take you from the beginning and teach you everything you need to give you a foundation for a great future.”

Maintenance Anything a skilled tradesperson builds – a highway, a power plant, an apartment building – requires another skilled tradesperson to maintain. Make that a small army of skilled tradespeople. From public parks to office towers to schools, you’ll find grounds and janitorial maintenance crews mowing and cleaning. At factories, technicians lubricate and test huge mechanical systems. Along roadways, crews repair damaged asphalt and clear drainage ditches. Inside critical utilities, such as HRSD’s wastewater treatment plants, workers keep machinery operating smoothly and protect the environment at the same time. Clearly, the roster of maintenance trades professionals is a diverse one. “At HRSD, we hire everyone from plant operators and engineers all the way through instrumentation specialist, electricians, maintenance operators, heavy equipment operators, facility assistants and in my division we have interceptor technicians, pump station supervisors and conveyance system supervisors,” lists Chris Stephan, HRSD’s Chief of Interceptor Operations, North Shore. “A lot of people start at an assistant position where they kind of get their feet wet and find out what we do, decide what they like,” describes Stephan. “The beautiful thing about HRSD is that you can work your way up the chain. It all depends on initiative, drive and capabilities.” If more training is required to make the job you want a good match, HRSD offers generous education benefits, including 4-year apprenticeship programs in eight
Reducing human impact on the environment for over 70 years. different trades. “Upon graduation, you’d be a licensed journeyman in your trade,” Stephan says. Unlike a lot of other employment sectors, wastewater treatment and management is not a field that can be outsourced. “It’s not only job security and excellent benefits, but you also have the added benefit of a purpose in your job,” says Stephan. “You can go into a lot of jobs, and they’re good jobs, very honorable, but here we’re actively working to protect the environment.” Other good options in this job category include residential and commercial property maintenance. The Bureau of Labor Statistics expects the need for general maintenance and repair workers to increase by 9% through 2022. The current annual median pay is $35,210, with specialty workers and supervisors commanding higher wages. Educational requirements vary by job from a high school diploma to a college degree and workers often find good opportunities for career advancement.

Manufacturing If you enjoy creating useful things or building something tangible, there’s an excellent job waiting for you in the manufacturing trades. “This is a rewarding field in the sense that you can leave at the end of a day and you’ve accomplished something that you can actually see,” says Paul Zabicki, Operations Vice President at Craft Industrial, an industrial service center that does machining and rebuild work. “We’re a custom shop where we do a lot of reverse engineering and design, so we hire machinists, industrial mechanics, we have welders/fitters – I’m talking about people who can take raw materials in their most basic form and make them into something,” Zabicki says. “These are true craftspeople.” And well compensated craftspeople, at that. “A conventional inside machinist here with five to ten years of experience can easily make $50,000 to $65,000 a year,” Zabicki says, “and that’s with a high school education.” And no college debt, he adds. Charlie Kane, President of locally-based Busch LLC, an industry leader in vacuum technology equipment and pump assembly, agrees that pay rates in the manufacturing trades can be rewarding. “I’ve got people working
in mechanic assembly, and in electrician and plumber roles, who are making much better money than people realize – better money than many people with four-year degrees,” he notes. And if your impression of a manufacturing job is a dreary grind in a hot, dirty plant, it’s time to bring that image up to date. “Often when people think of the manufacturing trades, they revert back to the 70s steel mills with someone working in a blast furnace under hazardous work conditions,” describes Kane. “That’s not what most of today’s industry and manufacturing positions are. For instance, we work on some pretty sophisticated manufacturing processes, very automated, with a lot of computer controls, and that work is done in a very clean, air-conditioned environment.” You’ll find a large variety of skills represented in manufacturing. “CNC (computer numerically controlled) machine operator is one we’re always looking at, mechanical assembly people, electrical technicians, and we have warehouse positions,” lists Kane. Other manufacturing jobs include fabricators, machinists, quality controllers, maintenance techs, operations managers, controls engineers, machine operators and line supervisors.

Excavator & Front End Loader Operators Needed Immediately
Manufacturing For those who are concerned about job security and the further eroding of our country’s manufacturing base, Kane points to a shift that has taken place in recent years. “People need to understand that manufacturing is still a great career opportunity. The interesting thing is that the type of manufacturing that is left is increasingly more specialized and more sophisticated. You’re doing something with ultra-pure metal or ultra-pure chemicals, it’s ultra-fast or ultra-small, and the jobs are more skills-based. “It’s a higher-end type of job today, and these are jobs that are actually growing. So while some manufacturing has declined, our industry, and our company in particular, continues to expand.” Community colleges and technical schools offer a variety of training programs in the manufacturing trades, and some companies offer in-house training.
Craft Industrial trains new hires who possess a mechanical aptitude, an attention to detail, and basic math and English skills. “We bring them into the machine shop and they pick up lots of different experiences and skills on the job, so they’re being paid to learn,” says Zabicki. “As they progress, their salary goes up. It’s not tied to a certain amount of time on the job like a government pay scale. If you started at $10 an hour but you’re worth $20 an hour, you’ll get $20 an hour. I don’t know too many places where that happens. “And once you have a job here and are good at what you do, your job is very secure because this is an underserved industry. There is opportunity in the trades and there is reward. If you’re willing to put forth an effort, there’s stability, long-term growth and prosperity for the taking. I can’t say it any more simply than this – it’s the American Dream as it used to be, and it’s here for you.”
A growing company specializing in mobile crushing operations is hiring for individuals with experience operating, Front End Loader and or Hydraulic Excavator. If you think the auto technology available to the average driver is impressive – backup cameras, infotainment systems, keyless entry – you should see what the automotive mechanics are working with. Tools of the trade include wireless scanning devices, computerized diagnosis equipment, and microchipped replacement parts. Even the wrenches are ergonomically shaped. It’s hightech paired with high-touch for those who enjoy working with their minds as much as with their hands. To get started, technicians earn either an associate’s degree or diploma in automotive mechanics, which prepares them for the ASE certification exams, the industry standard. At TCC’s Regional Automotive Center, students can complete an associate’s degree in 2 years, with a concentration in Toyota, Honda or Chrysler vehicles or a general automotive focus. “The majority of our students go into the general program,” says Beno Rubin, the center’s director, “but the skills we teach in the manufacturers’ programs can apply to any vehicle. It’s only when you get into the more advanced topics that it gets brand specific. “I always suggest that people come in for a visit, take a tour
through the center, talk to our instructors, get a sense of what we do here, and we’ll help them decide on a concentration.” Females do as well as males, and the program attracts new high school grads as well as career switchers and military veterans. “This is a field for people who like to solve problems,” says Rubin. “It’s not the same routine over and over again; you might see one problem one day and the next you’ll see something completely different.” Students go to work for dealerships, independent shops, large auto repair chains, fleets, even municipal governments, Rubin says. “There is so much opportunity for any student who wants to work,” he says. “Cars aren’t going away. They may evolve, but even with new technology, like cars that drive themselves, you still have to have people who can diagnose and repair them. This is a skill you can take anywhere.” The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects a 9% growth rate in automotive tech openings through 2022, with a current median hourly pay rate of $17.60. Experienced mechanics with formal automotive training and top-notch diagnostic and computer skills can command more than $60,070 a year.

Construction If building a long-term career is at the top of your job-hunting list, then look no further than the building trades. Skilled tradespeople in this field are extremely adaptable to changing economic conditions, giving them an enviable resilience. In cyclical boom times, they can’t work enough hours to satisfy demand. During downturns, their talents make way for them in related sectors – homeowners still need to replace aging roofs, businesses have to maintain their heating and cooling systems, and manufacturers are dependent on miles of wiring to deliver uninterrupted power. Construction occupations run the gamut from helpers to plumbers to site inspectors and most should see an increase in demand through 2022, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Jobs for brickmasons, for example, should grow by 34% through 2022. Openings for plumbers, painters, electricians, solar panel installers, carpenters and cement masons are expected to increase by 20-29% through that same period. Insulation installation jobs are projected to grow by 38%. Training programs at high schools, local community colleges and technical schools cover many of these trades. Another option is the Building Trades Academy, created by the Tidewater Builders Association to help students learn those trades in special demand locally. “Our program started in 1978 with seed funds from the federal government to train students who are economically disadvantaged at no cost to them,” says Erasto Beard, Staff Vice President at the academy. The academy currently offers a three-month building maintenance program with courses in carpentry, plumbing, HVAC, electrical wiring and other skills. Graduates are finding jobs with a variety of employers. “These are very good jobs, most of them salaried with benefits, and there’s a career ladder,” Beard says. “One student may go to work for a remodeler and another student can come out of the same class and be hired by an apartment community or even a builder.
Corman Construction, a leading heavy highway, bridge & utility contractor in the Mid-Atlantic region, has immediate openings at our Tidewater location: Carpenters - Experience in bridge construction preferred.
“One of the things we tell our students all the time is that college is a great option, but it’s not for everybody, and the building trades is a phenomenal career option. You’ll find people who are very, very successful. We’ve got TBA members who never went to college and they have done extremely well.” “Our graduates learn skills that will last them a lifetime and take them as far as they want to go,” says Megan Hill, Recruitment and Placement Coordinator. “There’s not a single building or home out there that doesn’t need some type of maintenance or care, whether it’s on a small scale or large, so these are jobs that really don’t ever expire.” Students attend either morning or afternoon classes each weekday, with plenty of hands-on training. “The application is on our website (www.buildingtradesacademy.com),” says Beard. Information sessions are held every Tuesday at 11am at the academy (2117 Smith Avenue, Chesapeake), or you can call 757-420-2566 for more information. New classes start February 3rd and April 21st. “This can be a springboard to some really major opportunities that many people don’t even know exist,” says Hill, who loves to see students who have been out of work or stuck in dead end jobs move into rewarding careers. “For many, it’s life changing.”

Truck Drviers/Transportation As home to one of the country’s busiest ports, Hampton Roads sends a large number of trucks on their way every day. Drivers routinely transport containers offloaded from ships to regional distribution centers or destinations further inland, then return for more cargo. Other drivers haul inbound loads of food and other goods, while still more make local delivery runs. But as busy as our region is, we still account for only a small portion of the nearly three million trucks on the road today. There are, very simply, a lot of jobs for truckers out there. As many of the older pros reach retirement age, the need for drivers will only increase. The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects an 11% increase in the number of trucking jobs through 2022 and employers are scrambling to fi ll driver seats. Rebecca Higginbotham, Program Coordinator for ATI’s commercial driving program, says the school can’t train drivers fast enough. “We have recruiters come in from different companies all the time and I’d say 90 percent of our students have job offers before they even graduate,” she says. “Overall, with the economy picking up, we’re facing a shortage of drivers right now.” To enter the industry, drivers must pass a Department of Transportation physical and earn a commercial driver’s license (CDL). Several local career schools and community colleges offer specialized training programs, including ATI’s eight-week program. “We have both morning and evening classes,” says Higginbotham, and age and gender is no barrier to entry.
The pay can be quite good. “For beginning drivers, it probably runs close to $37,000 a year, and I’d say ten years down the road they should be making $60,000 or better,” Higginbotham says. A CDL opens the door to a variety of driving jobs. “We have some students who don’t want to do over-the-road driving and they go to work for HRT or the schools driving buses,” says Higginbotham. “And at HRT, you have the opportunity to start out in buses and move to light rail.” Whether her students slide into the driver’s seats of tractor-trailers, local delivery trucks, buses or heavy commercial vehicles, Higginbotham says their career prospects are all the same – “They’ll always have a job. I see nothing but growth for drivers in the future.”

GETTING STARTED:
EDUCATION OPENS DOOR TO SKILLED TRADES CAREER You’ll find a wide variety of jobs represented in the skilled trades and just as many ways to enter the field, but one thing these careers share in common is the need for some type of formal training. “There’s a good reason for that,” says Dave Philpott, HVAC Program Coordinator at ATI (www.auto.edu). “With today’s technology, these fields have become so specialized that you have to have some type of advanced training just to do your job.” Harlan Krepcik, HVAC Program Head at Tidewater Community College (TCC.edu) agrees. “For HVAC, the body of technical knowledge doubles every two years – it’s actually a little under 1.8 years – and that technical capability that the industry has developed shows up in the equipment. Everything is controlled with microprocessors, and logic is built into the control systems. Very simply, you have to understand a lot more today than even 10 years ago.” This level of technology has touched almost every skilled trade. “Even the terminology has changed,” notes Rubin Beno, Director of TCC’s Regional Automotive Center. “They’re not auto mechanics anymore, they’re technicians. And the reason for that is the complexity of the vehicles they work on. Not only do they perform maintenance work,
but they have to be able to diagnose and repair the vehicle, they have to make determinations, read a wiring diagram, follow a flow chart, and understand computer networking – it’s amazing the technology that goes into these vehicles.” A generation ago, it was still possible to pick up a trade informally. “Today, these companies want you to come in with a foundational knowledge; they just don’t have the time to train anymore,” says Dennis Brakeville, Director of Education at Tidewater Tech (www. tidewatertechtrades.edu). A good training program doesn’t just gain you entrance to a trade, it also enhances your career opportunities, says Philpott. “When a supervisory position opens up, having that training on your resume is really attractive to an employer. It sets you up for a better future.” Fortunately, Hampton Roads offers a wealth of training options, from short certification courses to associate degree plans, including programs that start in high school, like TCC’s dual enrollment partnership with the City of Portsmouth. “These are 11th and 12th graders who come and take courses and get credit for them,” says Ann Ambrose, TCC’s Dean of Business, Public Services and Technologies. “If after
graduating from high school they decide they want to continue, they’re already ahead of the game.” Dual enrollment students can choose from fields like welding and automotive technology. Most schools offer both daytime and evening class schedules that accommodate full-time students as well as working adults. “Our students have many different needs and we try to work with them and get creative when we need to,” says Ambrose. For instance, one of TCC’s welding classes starts at midnight. In additional to local community colleges and technical schools, there are specialty schools like the Building Trades Academy (www. bu i ld i ng t r ade sac ademy.com) , associated with the Tidewater Builders Association. The academy trains disadvantaged students who are interested in the building maintenance trade at no cost to them, says Megan Hill, Recruitment and Placement Coordinator. “But we recognize that it’s about being a resource to the community, so even if a student isn’t eligible for our program, we still want to be able to plug them into other opportunities and training resources like ours.” One example she points to is a Navy facilities apprenticeship.
“Students go in to get trained in very specific areas like HVAC or high voltage electricity, and once they gain those hard skills they get certified as journeymen.” If you prefer steering wheels to welding torches and voltage meters, there’s the City of Norfolk’s CDL (commercial driver’s license) apprenticeship. Apprentices learn to pilot bulky refuse and recycling trucks around city streets in a six month program that will earn them the opportunity to take the commercial driver’s license exam. Job opportunities include positions with local municipal school systems and departments of public works, as well as transportation companies and trucking firms. Check out Norfolk. gov for class openings. A good resource to begin researching a career in the skilled trades is the Virginia Community College System’s online Wizard (www.vawizard.org), which offers a regional overview of available jobs, how much they pay and what type of training is necessary to work in that field. You can also visit career counselors and academic advisers at local schools for expert advice in matching your interests and career goals to the right skilled trade.
