Trading Up: Skilled Tradespeople In Demand There may be a large number of job categories posting anemic hiring stats, but the skilled trades field isn’t one of them. For job hunters who can wield a hammer, tune an engine or weld a submarine panel, employers are rolling out the welcome mat. One key factor prompting this robust hiring spree is an aging workforce. Baby boomers are beginning to retire in droves, yet finding enough skilled tradespeople to replace them is an ongoing problem for employers and staffing agencies who struggle to attract qualified applicants. “We still have high unemployment after the economic downturn, but in advanced manufacturing and other skilled trades jobs, employers cannot find enough qualified people to do the jobs they have,” says Theresa Bryant, vice president of workforce development at Tidewater Community College. “The average age of workers in these jobs is climbing into the 50s,” Bryant says, “and the retirements are just going to be hitting like crazy in the next few years. It’s already stated and there’s no pipeline of replacement workers coming up behind, so that’s what’s driving this almost crisis situation. We’ve got to get some younger workers in the door and trained.” “In the shipyards, the average workforce is 56, 57 years old,” adds David Ekker, dean of engineering, mathematics, and industrial technologies at Tidewater Community College’s Virginia Beach campus. “They’ve only got another five to 10 years to solve this problem; they have to be working on it now.” Paul Zabicki, operations vice president at Craft Industrial, an industrial service center that does machining and rebuild work, has experienced firsthand the frustration of trying to locate enough skilled workers to fill job openings. “It’s a big challenge for us in terms of actually having a large enough talent pool to fill these positions,” he says. “There are not nearly the amount of folks going into the trades as there were in the past. “We run employment ads consistently, we’ve thrown incentives at hiring folks and you get very little response. Certainly if people are not getting into the skilled trades, it’s a simple math equation – unless you replace workers as they age, there are going to be gaps.” This need for younger tradespeople to replace aging workers isn’t a temporary one; skilled baby boomers will be retiring in waves over the next 15 years, impacting key elements of the local economy as they transition out of the workforce. In fact, the manufacturing, trade, transportation and utility sectors – all skilled trade havens – claim almost a quarter (24.7%) of the total jobs in our region, according to the Hampton Roads Economic Development Alliance. The largest single employer in Hampton Roads is shipbuilding and ship repair giant Newport News Shipbuilding, which is
8 | CCEW
slated to receive hundreds of millions in new funding from the government to build, repair and overhaul Navy vessels. In light of these numbers, skilled tradespeople should find plenty of employers vying for their talents for many a year to come. In addition to job security, skilled tradespeople also command some very healthy paychecks. “A lot of the trades were underpaid relative to their true value back in the late 80s and early 90s,” says Zabicki. Today? “We don’t even know what minimum wage is here – none of our jobs pay that low. You’re not going into a trade today because you’re not college material. You’re going into a trade because it’s a very profitable thing to do.” John McCarthy, the welding program coordinator at Tidewater Tech, tells his students to stop thinking in terms of limits. “The only limit is your imagination,” he says. “You can do anything in these trades that you need to do. We have a building maintenance program here – every building needs somebody to take care of it. I have a friend who does that kind of work in commercial real estate and he’s making upwards of $70,000 a year doing a blue collar job. Young people have been brainwashed into thinking that you have to wear a suit and tie to work to be successful.” TCC’s Ekker agrees that the shipyards and other skilled trades employers have to overcome the culturallyenforced conventional wisdom that a four-year degree is the foundation for any good career. “What we’re trying to explain is that if you want to get a four-year degree, you can do that, but you don’t have to in order to get a good-paying, satisfying job,” he says. “It’s not like you’re going to be shaving a piece of wood all day long. These are technical jobs and they have a future.” For those interested in exploring a skilled trades career, there are several pathways into the field. The Virginia Community College System, career schools and technical institutes have developed an extensive list of accredited programs that lead to certification, licensure or degrees in a wide variety of skilled trade areas. High school students can get a head start by taking classes developed through public school/community college partnerships. Apprenticeship programs are another option; here in Hampton Roads you’ll find a large assortment of opportunities, from local trade groups to regional employers who offer registered apprenticeships that give new hires the opportunity to earn a paycheck while they work toward their journeyman’s card – and they all welcome diversity in age, gender and race. So whether you are a high school or college student, a career switcher or a first time job seeker, the skilled trades provide jobs that are in demand, pay rewarding wages and offer proven pathways toward advancement – all smart reasons to enter this thriving field. ■

HVAC Technicians HVAC techs today are as likely to be called on to perform critical repairs to a multi-million dollar piece of industrial equipment as they are to coax an aging residential furnace into producing warmth on a brrrrr winter day. “It’s not the same job working with the same old equipment anymore,” points out John Kerner, CEO of the Kerner Group, a multi-company organization that supplies HVAC, electrical, indoor air quality and facility management services. “Instead the HVAC systems are more complex and greener today,” he says. “Along with homes and businesses that need air conditioning and heating for human comfort, almost every manufacturing process requires some kind of heating and cooling system to make an end product and they can’t afford to have a production line affected because that system has failed,” says Kerner. All of which helps explain the increasing need for HVAC techs: the Bureau of Labor Statistics projects job growth gains of 21% through 2022, which they characterize as higher than average for the occupations they track. Interesting work that doesn’t tie you to a desk all day is just one of the perks of the job, says George Vogt, HVAC manager for Michael & Son Services. “It’s not a career where you have a lot of monotony,” he explains, “because you’re out interacting with different people doing different types of jobs every day.” Vogt regularly hires entry-level techs who have first completed a formal HVAC training program. “This is not a laborer type of job, it’s a skilled trade,” he says. “You can’t just pick it up – you have to understand the technology behind it. If we get someone who has come through an HVAC program, they’ve got a clean background check and they have a decent driving record, then we’re very interested. I’ve been here for two years and we’re never not hiring. It’s becoming harder and harder
to find good, qualified people.” HVAC programs are available locally at several technical and career training schools and community colleges. “Our program is 45 weeks and by the end of those 45 weeks, students have already taken their EPA certification exam,” says Dennis Brakeville, director of education and an HVAC expert at Tidewater Tech. HVAC techs can choose from three specialty areas, says Brakeville – “Residential; light commercial, which involves working with things like restaurant equipment, walk-in coolers and freezers; and commercial, such as the big buildings downtown where they deal with the centrifugal chillers and direct digital controls. If you’re an HVAC technician, you’re a mechanical expert, you’re an electrical expert, you’re an air flow expert and you’re a chemist.” According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median annual pay of HVAC techs is $43,640, though that amount can increase significantly. “Our very first HVAC graduate several years ago went to work at the Hilton Hotel and he started at $27 an hour – I wanted to take his job,” laughs Brakeville. Kerner also notes the hefty paychecks that HVAC techs can earn: “I can tell you that our senior mechanics make more than a school teacher,” he says, “and they have company-provided vehicles that they can drive back and forth to work. “This is a growing career field that is evolving. The more you put into it, the more you’ll get out of it.” ■

If you think the auto technology available to the average driver is impressive – backup cameras, infotainment systems, keyless entry – you should see what the automotive mechanics are working with. “We’ve got so many computer tools and pieces of equipment to attach to a car and you used to plug those wires into the dashboard,” says Mark Maund, the auto program coordinator at Tidewater Tech. “Now you can pick up that information on a computer in the shop with your scanning device while the car is outside.” Yes, students can still expect to spend hands-on time repairing engines, brakes and other auto systems – they’ll just bring hightech tools and computer savvy to each job. If you enjoy working with your mind as much as your hands, this is the field to go into, says Maund. To get started, technicians earn either an associate’s degree or diploma in automotive mechanics, which prepares them for the ASE certification exams, the industry standard. Tidewater Tech’s program takes 45 weeks to complete, and Maund regularly places graduates in local dealerships and independent repair shops, sometimes before
they’ve even finished the program. “If you go to school for auto mechanics, you will get a job if you want one. And it will be a career, it won’t be a job,” Maund says. “A lot of our students go on to become master techs while others are really interested in one or two particular areas, so they’ll focus on say engine performance or electrical troubleshooting, get certified in those, and go on to have good careers as specialists.” Those with entrepreneurial leanings often open their own shops. “As long as you have the people skills and pick up some business knowledge so you’ll know how to handle things like the taxes and the benefits, you can definitely go into business for yourself,” says Maund. The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects a 9% growth rate in automotive mechanic and tech openings through 2022, with a median hourly pay rate of $17.60. Experienced mechanics with formal automotive training and top-notch diagnostic and computer skills can command more than $60,070 a year. So, if you’re looking for a wellpaying, in-demand field that embraces new technology, an auto mechanic career might be the perfect fit. ■

Construction Trades The building trades harbor a group of highly-skilled workers whose talents allow them to move from commercial construction site to residential home remodel to property maintenance to specialty industrial work as market conditions shift. In cyclical boom times, they can’t work enough hours to satisfy demand. During downturns, homeowners still need to replace aging roofs, businesses have to maintain their heating and cooling systems, and manufacturers are dependent on miles of wiring to deliver uninterrupted power. Construction occupations run the gamut from helpers to plumbers to site inspectors and most should see an increase in demand through 2022, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Jobs for brickmasons, for example, should grow by 34% through 2022. Openings for plumbers, painters, electricians, solar panel installers, carpenters and cement masons are expected to increase by 20-29% through that same period. Insulation installation jobs are projected to grow by 38%. While years ago many people could pick up a construction trade informally, most require special training today. “I would say that’s true for almost every one of the trades in the building industry, and that’s all the way from the folks who are digging footings and pouring concrete to the person who comes in and hooks up your audio/video wiring,” says Jeff Ainslie, president of Ainslie Group, a local building company. Part of that need for more specialized training rests with the increasingly sophisticated equipment you’ll find on a construction site. While the lumbering bulldozer may look old-school from the outside, inside, the machine has gone thoroughly high tech. “The heavy equipment they manufacture today requires a lot of technical expertise,” says Ainslie. “Instead of the bulldozers where you basically had two foot pedals and two sticks, Caterpillar has these devices that have a heads up display. They have gloves you put your hands into and based on what you do with your hands, the machine responds. It’s almost like digging with your hands – the machine mimics everything that you do.”
Young people who have grown up interacting with gaming devices will feel right at home. “They’re probably very well prepared for a lot of the new equipment that’s being produced,” Ainslie agrees. “It requires a lot of hand-eye coordination and operators today must be very proficient.” Right now, the construction industry is being impacted by an aging workforce. “We have a generational skipping,” explains Ainslie. “Years ago many of these skilled trades were taught through practical experience and then later on through trade schools or apprenticeships, but most of those have gone by the wayside.” To help counter that trend, the Tidewater Builders Association created the Building Trades Academy, where students learn trades that are in demand locally, such as carpentry, HVAC, electrical and plumbing. Other options include training programs at local community colleges and technical schools that cover many of the construction trades, and area builders and subcontractors are often open to apprentices and interns. “If someone is interested in any of the building trades, they can contact the Tidewater Builders Association (757-420-2566) for more information or talk to their guidance counselor,” advises Ainslie. ■

Maintenance Anything a skilled tradesperson builds – a highway, a power plant, an apartment building – requires another skilled tradesperson to maintain. Make that a small army of skilled tradespeople. From public parks to office towers to schools, you’ll find grounds and janitorial maintenance crews mowing and cleaning. At factories, technicians lubricate and test huge mechanical systems. Inside critical utilities, such as HRSD’s wastewater treatment plants, workers keep machinery operating smoothly and protect the environment at the same time. “At HRSD, we hire everyone from plant operators and engineers all the way through instrumentation specialist, electricians, maintenance operators, heavy equipment operators and facility assistants,” lists Chris Stephan, HRSD’s Chief of Interceptor Operations, North Shore. Clearly, the roster of maintenance trades professionals is a diverse one and the Bureau of Labor Statistics expects the need for general maintenance and repair workers to increase by 9% through 2022. Educational requirements vary by job from a high school diploma to a college degree and workers often find good opportunities for career advancement. ■

Truck Drivers/Transportation As home to one of the country’s most important ports, Hampton Roads sends a large number of trucks on their way every day. Drivers routinely transport containers offloaded from ships to regional distribution centers or destinations further inland, then return for more cargo. Other drivers haul inbound loads of food and other goods, while still more make local delivery runs. But as busy as our region is, we still account for only a small portion of the nearly three million trucks on the road today. There are, very simply, a lot of jobs for truckers out there. As many of the older pros reach retirement age, the need for drivers will only increase. The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects an 11% increase in the number of trucking jobs through 2022 and employers are scrambling to fill driver seats. “We have companies that come in and actually recruit our students right out of school,” reports Matthew Woods, an instructor for Tidewater Community College’s truck driving program. Age and gender is no barrier to entry. “We have males and females and our students range in age from 21 to maybe 65,” he says. To enter the industry, drivers must pass a Department of Transportation physical and earn a commercial driver’s license (CDL). Several local career schools and community colleges offer specialized training programs, including TCC’s eight-week program that features stateof-the-art simulators as well as a skills range for actual wheels-on-the-road driving experience. Once students complete the TCC course, DMV examiners come to the school to conduct the licensing tests.
“Most of our students probably start off at about $36,000 a year, but a seasoned truck driver with maybe five years of experience will make anywhere from $50,000 to around $70,000,” Woods says. “And a lot of companies are moving to regional driving now, strategically pinpointing their work centers so that drivers stay in a 200300 mile radius, which gives them more time at home with their families.” Aside from good pay and the security of knowing a driving career isn’t likely to be outsourced, trucking also appeals to those who prize their independence. Once drivers pull away from a loading dock, there’s no one looking over their shoulders and that can be very rewarding indeed. ■

Shipbuilding & Ship Repair Trades The shipbuilding industry is a major economic driver in this region, employing tens of thousands of tradespeople, but it’s not all smooth sailing right now. “Many of the people in the shipbuilding industry are beginning to hit retirement age and we don’t have nearly enough workers to replace them,” says Tony Davezan, a recruiting manager for Ameri-Force, a marine, industrial and professional staffing agency. “And the shipbuilding field is flourishing right now,” he adds. “Things aren’t slowing down, they’re picking up. We’re extremely busy.” That means excellent employment opportunities for skilled shipyard workers. “Right now it’s a skilled trades market because there are so many needs in the industry,” Davezan says. “If you’re a first class shipfitter or pipefitter for instance, you can pick and choose where you want to go and what you want to do because it’s all about supply and demand.” There’s enough variety in the shipbuilding and ship repair trades to appeal to a wide range
of interests, says Davezan, including electricians, welders, inside and outside machinists, shipfitters, insulators, painters, pipefitters and riggers. Once they learn their craft, skilled tradespeople can expect opportunities to advance and training resources that are second to none. For instance, much of the management at area shipyards came from the skilled trades. The paychecks can be very good as well. “If you have a skilled trade, you can easily make $50,000 to $150,000 a year,” reports Paul Rodriguez, president of NSC Technologies, a firm that places tradespeople in U.S. Navy shipyards from here to San Diego and Pearl Harbor. “I have almost a thousand people on my payroll and I’m signing these checks for steel fabricators who are clearing $3,000 and that’s on a weekly basis. Some of them work six months, then take six months off to spend time with their family.” “This can certainly be a very rewarding career,” Davezan says. “Our challenge right now is getting the word out to people.” ■

Machinist Watching a machinist create a precision metal part or a crucial tool is a demonstration of art, science and skill in action. In fact, this is a trade that caters to creative problem solvers. “This is a rewarding field in the sense that you can leave at the end of a day and you’ve accomplished something that you can actually see,” says Paul Zabicki, operations vice president at Craft Industrial, an industrial service center that does machining and rebuild work. “We’re a custom shop where we do a lot of reverse engineering and design – I’m talking about people who can take raw materials in their most basic form and make them into something,” Zabicki says. “These are true craftspeople.” And well compensated craftspeople, at that. “A conventional inside machinist here with five to ten years of experience can easily make $50,000 to $65,000 a year,” Zabicki says, “and that’s with a high school education.” And no college debt, he adds. Community colleges and technical schools offer a variety of training programs for those interested in the machining g trade, and some companiess offer in-house training. Craft Industrial trains new hires who possess a mechanical aptitude, an attention to detail, and basic math and English h skills. “We bring them into the machine shop and they hey pick up lots of different ent experiences and skills on the he job, so they’re being paid to learn,” says Zabicki. “We don’t’ even know what minimum wage is here, none ne of
our jobs pay that low. A worker that knows very little could be starting out $12, $14 an hour,” he says. “Someone that’s sound in the trade can make almost $30 an hour straight time. And with most businesses like ours, you can’t find enough machinists to minimize your overtime, so you generally have these folks working overtime. Now all of a sudden after eight hours they are making $45 an hour. That’s a pretty good living,” Zabicki notes. “And once you have a job here and are good at what you do, your job is very stable because this is an underserved industry. The machinist trade is in demand and we’re certainly looking for folks with the aptitude for it. “There is opportunity and there is reward. If you’re willing to put forth an effort, there’s stability, long-term growth and prosperity for the taking. I can’t say it any more simply than this – it’s the American Dream as it used to be, and it’s here for you,” says Zabicki. ■

Manufacturing If your impression of a manufacturing job is a dreary grind in a hot, dirty plant, it’s time to bring that image up to date. “Often when people think of the manufacturing trades, they revert back to the 70s steel mills with someone working in a blast furnace under hazardous work conditions,” describes Charlie Kane, president of locally-based Busch LLC, an industry leader in vacuum technology equipment and pump assembly. “That’s not what most of today’s industry and manufacturing positions are. For instance, we work on some pretty sophisticated manufacturing processes, very automated, with a lot of computer controls, and that work is done in a very clean, air-conditioned environment. “The other side of it is understanding how far these careers can take you. I’ve got people working in mechanic assembly, and in electrician and plumber roles, who are making much better money than people realize – better money than many people with four-year degrees. You can start off in one of these trades and rather than putting yourself in debt going to school, you’re making money initially as you learn your craft.” There is a wide range of jobs in the manufacturing trades. “CNC (computer numerically controlled) machine operator is one we’re always looking at, mechanical assembly people, electrical technicians, and we have warehouse positions,” lists Kane. Other manufacturing jobs include
16 | CCEW
fabricators, machinists, quality controllers, maintenance techs, operations managers, controls engineers, machine operators and line supervisors. Right now, these are jobs that are in demand. “There’s a kind of a gap in the workforce,” explains Kane. “Many of the people in the skilled trades are more than halfway through their careers and there are not enough new people going into the trades to replace them. That’s why we’re working with the community colleges and others to look at how we can create training programs to develop these skillsets and encourage people to go into them.” For those who are concerned about job security and the further eroding of our country’s manufacturing base, Kane points to a shift that has taken place in recent years. “People need to understand that manufacturing is still a great career opportunity, even though it may appear like it has declined in the U.S. I think there is a lot more discussion going on about re-shoring. The U.S. dollar goes down, the Chinese yuan goes up, all of a sudden the cost of transportation is being factored in and you’re seeing companies reevaluating business that has been sent overseas and looking at bringing it back. “There is a new view of the U.S. in terms of competitiveness and an increased opportunity to produce products here and ship them overseas, and that helps grow the economy and improve our trade imbalance. So this is a career where you can actually feel like you’re making a difference in trying to improve economic conditions. “And the interesting thing is that the type of manufacturing done here is increasingly more specialized and more sophisticated. You’re doing something with ultra-pure metal or ultra-pure chemicals, it’s ultra-fast or ultra-small, and the jobs are more skills-based. It’s a higher-end type of job today, and for someone with artistic skills, there are lots of ways they can use that skillset. “These are jobs that are actually growing. So while some manufacturing has declined, our industry, and our company in particular, continues to expand. Unfortunately, I don’t think there is an awareness today of the type of work being done on the manufacturing side, especially for skilled tradespeople. If people investigate, they’ll find that the compensation levels, the work conditions, the career opportunities are all there,” says Kane. ■

Welders If you want a resume that opens doors everywhere, become a welder. “There are tons of opportunities for people who are coming into the field as older workers start to retire, says John McCarthy, the welding program coordinator at Tidewater Tech. “We see it every day as employers try to fill that gap, so we have partnerships with local companies who are working with us to try and bring some younger people into the field. Shipyards, power plants, large construction sites, manufacturing – all of them compete for skilled welders. “What we do here is train our students to weld in a 30-week course, describes McCarthy. “After they complete the course they can go in at maybe two or three pay grades above the person who hasn’t had any training at all, especially places like Newport News Shipbuilding – we work with them all the time. Some of the local marine staffing agencies have also developed programs to help alleviate the shortage of welders. Paul Rodriguez, president of NSC Technologies, recently began a program that trains and certifies welders for shipyard work. “They are a dying breed so I purchased a fabrication shop and I’ve got ten welding booths set up with standard shipyard equipment. When you pass our test, we transfer your certification documents to our clients’ quality assurance departments so we can put you to work in a shipyard. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, top earners report an annual pay rate of over $56,130, while the median hourly wages are
$17.45 per hour. Welding engineers command a median $84,000 a year and welders who are willing to travel and work under challenging conditions can earn well over $100,000 a year. Pay is directly related to skill level, a good reason to keep training current. Some welders move into supervisory or management positions while others branch into programming or operating robotic and other welding machines. Welders may find themselves in a variety of environmental conditions, from manning a workbench on the floor of a plant to perching atop a high-rise to working underwater. Most welders work in manufacturing-related businesses, though in our region, shipyards and their subcontractors are one of the largest sources of jobs. About half of all welders work a 40-hour work week, but overtime is common. Because many firms that employ welders run two or three shifts, it’s possible to work a schedule that accommodates personal and family needs. This is a field that enthusiastically welcomes female workers. “In my career at Newport News Shipbuilding, females were some of the best welders I dealt with,â€? shares McCarthy. “We have about six female students in our program right now and they’re doing really well.â€? Career switchers are welcome as well. “We have a lot of military students,â€? McCarthy says, “and I had one guy graduate not too long ago who had a degree in psychology.â€? In demand and well paid – a welding career is hard to beat. â–

Light Up Your Career: Electrical Apprenticeships While employees from a wide range of job sectors continue to keep an uneasy watch on unemployment numbers, local electricians can be forgiven for wondering what all the angst is about. “We’ve been very fortunate in this area,” says Mike Iacobellis, a licensed electrician and director of the Tidewater Electrical Industry Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (JATC). “Our contractors do an array of work – industrial, commercial, a lot of government work – so we were able to keep all of our apprentices employed as well as our journeymen during the downturn.” Electricians can expect to remain in demand, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, which projects a job growth increase in this field of 20% through 2022. The pay is quite good – the median wage is $49,840 a year, with the top 10 percent earning more than $82,930/yr. In Virginia, electricians must be licensed and there are several pathways into the trade. Community colleges, along with career and technical schools, offer excellent programs that lead to the required state license, but most electricians acquire their skills in a four or five-year apprenticeship program like the one Iacobellis oversees. One of the advantages of the apprenticeship option is that you earn a paycheck while you learn. “It’s paid on-the-job training, and one of the nice things about our program, since it’s union sponsored, is that apprentices actually receive health
insurance and retirement benefits that are all paid for by the contractor who is employing them,” lists Iacobellis. “By the time they go into the second year of the program, they receive a total of three pensions that are paid for automatically. “We get a lot of applicants right out of high school, but we also get people who want to switch careers; we have apprentices from age 18 to 50 coming in and doing well in the program. It’s open to everybody who is looking for a career and once you graduate from the program there’s always opportunity there. You can be your own boss, you can become an estimator, a project manager, a foreman – there’s no limit to what you can do in this trade,” he says. Applications are accepted year round, but the classroom portion of the apprenticeship starts each September, so materials for the 2014 class should be submitted this spring. You’ll find an application form at www.ibew80.com, or for more information you can call Iacobellis at 4802812. ■
