One of the best pathways to an indemand, well-paying career that shrugs off economic downturns and offers unlimited opportunities for professional growth is to learn a skilled trade. Not only does the skilled trades field encompass hundreds of individual job categories that cater to a wide variety of talents and interests, but these are jobs that are difficult to outsource. “We as a society got so caught up in computers and dot-coms and so forth that we lost track of the fact that we still need people with the ability to lay a brick or fix your plumbing,” says Tony Farley, Associate Vice President for Business Development and Corporate Training at Thomas Nelson Community College. “These jobs are not going away. And these are very good paying jobs.” To get started in the skilled trades, there has never been a wider choice of training programs available, whether you are a recent high school graduate or a career switcher. Regional employers offer registered apprenticeships that give new hires the opportunity to earn a paycheck while they work toward their journeyman’s card. High school students can get a head start on a trade career by taking classes developed through public school/community college partnerships. The Virginia Community College System, along with career and technical schools, have developed an extensive list of accredited programs that lead to certification, licensure or degrees in a large number of skilled trade areas. “There are considerable opportunities that are available to enter a skilled trades career that offer a very bright future with substantially less training time and less cost than a degree from a four-year institution,” says Farley. For instance Thomas Nelson has programs that run anywhere from three weeks to two years. “We have one welding course that is basically five weeks, and that covers enough material for that student to apply for an entry-level position in the welding area,” Farley says. “There are companies out there right now that need employees but they can’t

find people with the necessary skills,” he adds. “So we work very closely with them to develop training programs that allow our students to transition directly into a job.” Once someone chooses a trade, a whole world of opportunity opens, says Farley. “You have people in the shipyards who went through apprenticeship programs who are in top leadership positions now. And learning a trade allows you to be entrepreneurial if you choose – you can start your own welding company or HVAC business.” One place to explore some of your options is the Virginia Community College System’s online Wizard at www. vawizard.org. The Wizard takes you through a series of questions to help narrow down the occupations that may interest you, and gives you a regional overview of related jobs that are available, how much they pay, and what type of training is necessary to work in that field. You can also visit career counselors and academic advisers at local career schools and community colleges who can point you to apprenticeship opportunities, shortterm training programs or full associate degree plans – all without incurring the debt load of a traditional four-year degree, and in fields that are hiring. “We did a study last year with some of the companies in our area,” says Farley, “and one of the things we asked was what kinds of jobs are available. I also asked them, based on their best guestimate, what does the future look like? What we learned was that about 11,500 jobs in 11 different occupations are going to be available over the next few years. It covered welding, electricians, coating (painting), fabricators, pipefitters, machinists, engineers, just a wide variety of jobs. And part of the reason is that the baby boomers are retiring and those skills need to be replaced. “This just reinforces what a wonderful opportunity in terms of job security and career longevity there is for people who choose a trade.” ■

SHIPYARD, Inc. Accepting applications for the following positions:

resume@capitalconsultants.net

Profile: Shipbuilding and Ship Repair Just call Hampton Roads shipyard central. With our high concentration of working ports and naval bases, the area is a natural host for shipbuilders and ship repair firms, from large organizations that employ tens of thousands of workers, to smaller businesses and subcontractors that may hire a few workers or several hundred. For skilled tradespeople who work in the marine sector, there are more well-paying jobs than qualified people to fill them. “One of the big things that we struggle with day to day here in our industry is the lack of skilled tradespeople,” says Paul Rodriguez, president of NSC Technologies (www. nsc-tech.com), a staffing agency that places tradespeople in U.S. Navy shipyards from here to San Diego and Pearl Harbor. “Every day my clients are reaching out saying we have a need for 50 welders or we need 80 electricians or 12 painters. There are just enormous opportunities out there in our industry to learn a trade and grow with the company.” That means excellent employment opportunities for a wide variety of shipbuilding trades, including welders, electricians, carpenters, inside machinists, outside machinists, pipefitters, shipfitters and riggers. Skilled tradespeople can expect opportunities to advance and training resources that are second to none. For instance, many of the shipyards and marine services companies hire apprentices and pay them to learn a trade. And, notes Rodriguez, the paychecks can be very good. “If you have a skilled trade, you can easily make $50,000 to $150,000 a year,” he reports. “I have almost a thousand people on my payroll and I’m signing these checks for steel fabricators who are clearing $3,000 and that’s on a weekly basis. Some of them work six months, then take six months off to spend time with their family.”

LYON

Along with good pay and steady work are the intangible benefits of working in the shipbuilding industry. “There is the pride in saying hey, I’ve worked on board the USS George H.W. Bush or some other vessel that is used to protect the country,” says Rodriguez. “You’re a part of something that is very significant to the United States. And how many people actually get the opportunity to step onto an aircraft carrier or a nuclear submarine?” Like all regional marine service employers, Rodriguez hires a diversity of people, including women. “In fact, one of our best welders is a woman who works for a client on a job that was initially supposed to be a two-month project. They’ve had her for almost five months now and they don’t want to let her go. “We don’t discriminate – if you have a skilled trade or a desire to learn a trade, if you’re going to show up every day and perform, then we’re interested in you.” ■

Profile: Maintenance Anything a skilled tradesperson builds – a highway, a power plant, an apartment building – requires another skilled tradesperson to maintain. Make that a small army of skilled tradespeople. From public parks to office towers to schools, you’ll find grounds and janitorial maintenance crews mowing and cleaning. At factories, technicians lubricate and test huge mechanical systems. Along roadways, crews repair damaged asphalt and clear drainage ditches. Other good options in this job category include residential and commercial property maintenance. Responding to a growing need, the Building Trades Academy, created by the Tidewater Builders Association, developed a course of study that teaches both property management and maintenance. “We had a number of the apartment management companies come to us and ask us to tailor a program for them,” explains Jeff Ainslie, President of Ainslie Group, a local building company. “They need people who can go into someone’s home, communicate clearly, analyze what the maintenance issue is, determine how to take care of it and then make it happen very quickly. It’s been

a very successful program for both the students and the management companies.” The Bureau of Labor Statistics expects the need for general maintenance and repair workers to increase by 11% through 2020 and notes that the annual median pay in 2010 was $34,730. Educational requirements vary by job from a high school diploma to a college degree and workers often find good opportunities for career advancement. ■

Profile: Truck Drivers As home to one of the country’s busiest ports, Hampton Roads sends a large number of trucks on their way every day. Drivers routinely transport containers offloaded from ships to regional distribution centers or destinations further inland, then return for more cargo. Other drivers haul inbound loads of food and other goods, while still more make local delivery runs. But as busy as our region is, we still account for only a small portion of the nearly 3.2 million trucks on the road today. There are, very simply, a lot of jobs for truckers out there. “Everything that we touch has been on a truck at some point,” explains Sean Martin, Director of Operations for Truck Driver Training/4CDL.com, the company contracted to teach driving at many of the community colleges in Virginia, including Thomas Nelson on the peninsula. The Bureau of Labor statistics confirms that the sector is one of the country’s largest and projects an increase in trucking jobs of 21% through 2020. That rising demand for more drivers – just as many of the older pros reach retirement age – means trucking careers are shifting into high gear. To enter the industry, drivers must pass a Department of Transportation physical and earn a commercial driver’s license (CDL). Several local career schools and community colleges offer specialized training programs, including Thomas

Nelson Community College’s program, which can be completed in as little as four weeks. The pay can be quite good. “The national average, according to the American Trucking Association, is $36,000-$42,000 for first year earnings, and students that come out of our program tend to push the mid-40s their first year,” says Martin. Females do just as well as males, and Martin has trained students from age 18 on up. “I think my oldest student was 78,” he says, “and the last I heard he was still driving. There is no demographic in trucking – anyone can learn to drive a truck. It’s a fair playing field for anybody that has an interest in it.” ■

Leading-Edge Vacuum Technology Advanced manufacturing across the USA and around the world

If your impression of a manufacturing job is a dreary grind in a hot, dirty plant, it’s time to bring that image up to date. “Often when people think of the manufacturing trades, they revert back to the 70s steel mills with someone working in a blast furnace under hazardous work conditions,” describes Charlie Kane, President of locally-based Busch LLC, an industry leader in vacuum technology equipment and pump assembly. “That’s not what most of today’s industry and manufacturing positions are. For instance, we work on some pretty sophisticated manufacturing processes, very automated, with a lot of computer controls, and that work is done in a very clean, air-conditioned environment. “The other side of it is understanding how far these careers can take you. I’ve got people working in mechanic assembly, and in electrician and plumber roles, who are making much better money than people realize – better money than many people with four-year degrees.” There is a wide range of jobs in the manufacturing trades. “CNC (computer numerically controlled) machine operator is one we’re always looking at, mechanical assembly people, electrical technicians, and we have warehouse positions,” lists Kane. Other manufacturing jobs include fabricators, machinists, quality controllers, maintenance techs, operations managers, controls engineers, machine operators and line supervisors. Right now, these are jobs that are in demand. “There’s a kind of a gap in the workforce,” explains Kane. “Many of the people in the skilled trades are more than halfway through their careers and there are not enough new people going into the trades to replace them. That’s why we’re working with the community colleges and others to look at how we can create training programs to develop these skill sets and encourage people to go into them.”

For those who are concerned about job security and the further eroding of our country’s manufacturing base, Kane points to a shift that has taken place in recent years. “People need to understand that manufacturing is still a great career opportunity, even though it may appear like it has declined in the U.S. The interesting thing is that the type of manufacturing that is left is increasingly more specialized and more sophisticated. You’re doing something with ultra-pure metal or ultra-pure chemicals, it’s ultrafast or ultra-small, and the jobs are more skills-based. “It’s a higher-end type of job today, and these are jobs that are actually growing. So while some manufacturing has declined, our industry, and our company in particular, continues to expand.” ■

Profile: Construction News: Construction Builders are posting some of their best numbers since 2008 as the long-awaited housing recovery shows muchwelcomed signs of strength. That means that construction tradespeople can expect their already busy work lives to get even busier. When building jobs contracted several years ago, the construction trades simply moved on to ancillary tasks: remodeling homes, replacing aging roofs, wiring high tech offices, repairing roads and performing specialty industrial work. As a whole, the building trades are able to move from one work sphere to another as market conditions shift, giving them an enviable resilience. Construction occupations run the gamut from helpers to plumbers to site inspectors and the Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that most will see an increase in demand through 2020. Jobs for brickmasons, for example, should grow by 40% through 2020. Openings for plumbers, painters, electricians, drywall installers, carpenters, cement masons and construction equipment operators are expected to increase by 23-34% through that same period. Construction inspector jobs are projected to grow by 18%. The pay can be quite good. Electricians earned a

median hourly wage of $23.20 per hour as of 2010. Top earners claimed an annual median income of over $80,890. Electricians who are skilled in voice, data and video wiring will see the most demand, though in Hampton Roads marine electricians with shipbuilding and ship repair experience are especially sought after. While years ago many people could pick up a construction trade informally, most require special training today. “I would say that’s true for almost every one of the trades in the building industry, and that’s all the way from the folks who are digging footings and pouring concrete to the person who comes in and hooks up your audio/video wiring,” says Jeff Ainslie, president of Ainslie Group, a local building company. Right now, the construction industry is being impacted by an aging workforce. “We have a generational skipping,” explains Ainslie. “Years ago many of these skilled trades were taught through practical experience and then later on through trade schools or apprenticeships, but most of those have gone by the wayside.” To help counter that trend, the Tidewater Builders Association created the Building Trades Academy, where

For those with a knack for problem solving, there’s a well-paying occupation that welcomes your talents – auto mechanics. Since these are jobs that can’t be outsourced, job security is one of the appeals of the field. “There are always jobs,” says Bud Brueggeman, who recently retired as TCC’s automotive technology program head. “Even during the slowdown there were jobs for automotive techs. It’s one of those fields where if you are a skilled employee, you can get a job.” Another attraction is the opportunity to work with rapidly evolving technology that places a heavy emphasis on analytic, diagnostic and computer skills in an increasingly high-tech environment. “When I first started, computers were just being introduced into vehicles,” recalls Larry Grubb, the auto tech coordinator at Tidewater Tech. “A lot of technicians at that time didn’t want any part of it,” he laughs. “Today just about every single system on a car is computer controlled in one way or the other, from brakes to lights and steering suspension. What we’re seeing is that students nowadays are technically savvy, so that definitely helps them grasp a lot of this.” Grubb says the complex work that automotive techs perform is just the beginning of where the field is heading. “It’s getting very interesting. I’ve been doing this for probably 30 years now or longer and it’s as exciting for me today as when I was first starting out because the technology keeps changing; there’s something new to learn all the time. Now there’s this new fuel injection, there are the hybrids and there are all the alternative fuels – it’s hard to imagine where this area is going to go.” People who enjoy trouble-shooting are a good fit for this occupation, Grubb says. “When you have a vehicle come in with a problem, being able to address that challenge

and see it leave with the issue repaired is very satisfying.” The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects a 17% growth rate in automotive mechanic and tech openings through 2020, with a current median hourly pay rate of $17.21. Experienced mechanics with formal automotive training and top-notch diagnostic and computer skills can command more than $59,590 a year. Auto mechanics work for dealerships, independent repair shops, national chains – even tire and auto part stores. And this is a field that lends itself to entrepreneurs who want to start their own businesses as long as they’re self-motivated and have the necessary skills. So, for an in-demand job that embraces new technology and offers great opportunities for advancement, rev up to a career as an auto mechanic. ■

Profile: Aviation Mechanics & Avionic Equipment Techs Each day in the United States, the skies fill with around 28,000 passenger flights crisscrossing the country or taking quick regional hops. The job of keeping all of those planes safely aloft falls to the Aviation Mechanics and Avionic Equipment Techs who work behind the scenes in rewarding, well-paying jobs. To get started in the field, students enroll in one of 170 FAA-certified schools around the country, like the wellregarded Aviation Institution of Maintenance. Aviation mechanics with the industry-standard A&P certificate are qualified to work with the body and engine of the airplane, says Jerry Lee, director of education at the Chesapeake campus of Aviation Institution of Maintenance. A popular related field is avionics, which includes repairing and maintaining navigation and other electronic components. “Until a few years ago, companies looked for either aviation mechanics or avionics techs – today they want someone who can do both jobs,” he

says. “Our aviation mechanics program by itself runs 19 months and the aviation mechanics program combined with avionics takes 23 months.” Aviation mechanics should see a job growth increase of 6% through 2020 according to Bureau of Labor Statistics and Lee says their graduates are experiencing no problems finding jobs. “As a matter of fact, we actually have employers calling in and asking for students with their A&P certificate because they have openings.” The Bureau of Labor Statistics places the median hourly pay at $25.59 and annual pay at $53,220 as of 2010, with high-skill workers earning over $72,250 a year. Job perks include free air travel. So if the idea of a desk-bound job holds little appeal for you, aviation/avionics is one high-flying field that offers technical challenge along with generous pay and great benefits. ■

Profile: HVAC Techs Whether they’re making a house call to replace an ailing heating unit or performing critical repairs to a multimillion dollar piece of industrial equipment, HVAC techs are some of the most sought after workers in the trades. The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects job growth gains of 34% through 2020, which they characterize as much higher than average for the occupations they track. “The last research I did nationwide, the HVAC industry was roughly 50% undermanned,” notes Dennis Brakeville, director of education and an HVAC expert at Tidewater Tech (www.tidewatertechtrades.edu). Mark Flanagan, the mechanical/electrical superintendent at Old Dominion University, has experienced this shortage of qualified HVAC techs first hand. “Here at the university, I’ve been trying to fill an air conditioning spot off and on since 2002. We have equipment like you’ll find in your home but we also have a lot of commercial buildings that are seven, eight, nine stories high. If I can find someone who has a basic understanding of the refrigeration cycle and the ability to learn, I can teach them the ventilation system. But those people are scarce.” Brakeville points to an aging workforce compounded by increased regulatory mandates to explain the growing competition for HVAC techs. “Just as the average welder is reaching age 55, that holds true with the HVAC industry,” he explains. HVAC techs can choose from three specialty areas, he says – “Residential; light commercial, which involves working with things like restaurant equipment, walk-in coolers and freezers; and commercial, such as the big buildings downtown where they deal with the centrifugal chillers and direct digital controls. If you’re an HVAC technician, you’re a mechanical expert, you’re an electrical expert, you’re an air flow expert and you’re a chemist.”

16 | CCEW

Old Dominion University Department of Facilities Management is seeking qualified candidates for the following positions:

(Job #00470 & #00484) Most HVAC techs enter the field after going through a six-month to two-year program offered by career and technical schools or community colleges. “Our program is 45 weeks,” says Brakeville, “and by the end of those 45 weeks, they have already taken their EPA certification exam.” According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median annual pay of HVAC techs is $42,530, though that amount can increase significantly. “Our very first HVAC graduate several years ago went to work at the Hilton Hotel and he started at $27 an hour – I wanted to take his job,” laughs Brakeville. Adds Flanagan, “Take a company like McQuay International – if they find a good technician who is trainable, will come to work reliably and has the ability to retain what they learn, that person has the ability to make well over $100,000 a year easily.” Job security, great pay and the opportunity to work with increasingly high-tech equipment – the HVAC field has a great deal to recommend it. ■

Profile: Welders If you want a resume that opens doors everywhere, become a welder. “We can’t find enough anywhere in the country,” says Brad Mason, director of operations for AMSEC, a marine services company with a local presence. “And it’s not only our business, but also power plants, large construction sites, manufacturing – they all use welders and it’s hard to find them.” Because they are in short supply, welders command excellent wages, notes Thomas Stout, program head for electomechanical controls at Tidewater Community College. “The opportunities can be very lucrative, especially for anyone who can weld aluminum, or is qualified to weld in a nuclear power plant, underwater or do ship repair.” Locally, people who want to enter the field can opt for registered apprenticeships or programs developed by community colleges and technical training schools in partnership with regional industries. Shakirah Harrell, the welding coordinator at Tidewater Tech (www.tidewatertechtrades.edu), got her start at Newport News Shipbuilding. “I went through a 4-year apprenticeship program and worked my way up from basic welding to pipe welding,” she says. “I worked there for five years and discovered I liked showing other people how to weld, so I started teaching part-time at Tidewater Tech, then full-time and now I’m the program coordinator.” Harrell says that there are great opportunities for advancement in the field and that females welders do very well. Mason agrees – “It’s a very complex skill, and one thing that we have found in our industry is that women are extremely good welders. I wish we could find more women who were interested in it.”

While the field has gone very high tech, with over 100 different processes that can be used, welding still rests on a foundation of four basic fundamentals. “We touch on all four processes in our program and follow the AWS (American Welding Society) guidelines,” says Harrell. “Each employer has their own welding test, and we give our students the ability to go out and pass those tests. Then the students receive their certifications through the employer.” Top earners reported an annual pay rate of $53,690 as of 2010, while the median hourly wages were $17.04 per hour. Pay is directly related to skill level, a good reason to keep training current. Some welders move into supervisory or management positions while others branch into operating or programming robotic or other welding machines. Welders may find themselves in a variety of environmental conditions, from manning a workbench on the floor of a plant to perching atop a high-rise to working underwater. Most welders work in manufacturing-related businesses, though in our region, shipyards and their subcontractors are one of the largest sources of jobs. The median salary for welders who choose shipbuilding is a healthy $46,015. About half of all welders work a 40-hour work week, but overtime is common and the Bureau of Labor Statistics notes that one in five welders rack up 50 hours a week or more. Because many firms that employ welders run two or three shifts, it’s possible to work a schedule that accommodates personal and family needs. If the idea of employers competing for your talents appeals to you, and you want top pay and benefits, a welding career is hard to beat. ■

Profile: Water & Wastewater Plant Technicians In addition to being sought after by private industry, local tradespeople are also recruited by the communities they live in. For instance, HRSD (Hampton Roads Sanitation District) attracts those who like the idea of working for an organization that is committed to safeguarding the environment and providing services that residents depend on. The diversity of skilled trade positions at HRSD appeals to a wide variety of interests. “We hire everyone from facility assistants all the way through instrumentation specialists, electricians, maintenance operators, heavy equipment operators, and in my division we have interceptor technicians, pump station supervisors and conveyance system supervisors,” lists Chris Stephan, HRSD’s Chief of Interceptor Operations, North Shore. “A lot of people start at an entry-level assistant position where they kind of get their feet wet and find out what we do, decide what they like. The beautiful thing about HRSD is that you can work your way up the chain.” As the first of the baby boomers hit retirement age, with an even larger number waiting to exit behind them,

employers like HRSD have created apprenticeship programs to replace crucial skills. “We offer an apprenticeship program in several different trades,” confirms Stephan. “It’s a four-year program licensed through the state of Virginia, and at the end of the program after they’ve done all the educational requirements and the on-the-job training, they come away with a journeyman’s card. The biggest two programs are for treatment plant operators and interceptor technicians.” In addition to their apprenticeship program, HRSD offers generous educational benefits, including college tuition. “I’ve worked at a lot of different places and HRSD I think is by far and away the most employee oriented,” Stephan says. “But it’s not only job security and excellent benefits – you also have the added benefit of a purpose in your job,” he notes. “You can go into a lot of jobs, and they’re good jobs, very honorable, but here we’re actively working to protect the environment.” According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, water and wastewater treatment plant and system operators earn

an annual median pay of $40,770 per year, and should see an increase of 12% in the number of job openings by 2020. Industrial machinery mechanics and maintenance workers should see an increased need of 19% through 2020 and their median pay is $44,160/yr. Specialty workers and supervisors command higher wages. ■
