The hardest working people in human resources today are those trying to fill open job slots for skilled tradespeople. In a new report by Mark Mills, a senior fellow at the Manhattan Institute, skilled trades vacancies continue to be the hardest to fill – and they have been for six years now. In Hampton Roads, that shortage of tradespeople is particularly felt in transportation and logistics. “The transportation and logistics industry here is a big one,” says Dr. Bruce Brunson, an executive director with Tidewater Community College. “All you have to do is watch the Chesapeake Bay to see all the container ships arriving.” Last year alone, the Port of Virginia handled over 2600 vessel calls and processed almost 20 million tons of cargo, including 1.4 million container units. “All of that cargo has to be transported by truck somewhere,” says Brunson, whether to rail lines, local or inland distribution warehouses, or destinations across the country. “So there is a tremendous need for truck drivers – we don’t have enough of them,” Brunson says. “We’ve talked with some of the key truck driving companies here and they basically have cargo just sitting.” Joe Harris, spokesperson for the Port of Virginia, agrees that the Port is generating a lot of trucking and other transportation-related jobs. “What we’re seeing is considerable growth that is being driven by an improving economy,” says Harris. “Specifically we have a lot of natural assets these large ships want to utilize – we have deep water, we don’t have bridges in the way, the terminals are modern and efficient, and we’re within a day’s drive of two-thirds of the nation’s population. We’re exceptionally busy.” They are also always hiring. “It might be a warehouse supervisor or a forklift operator or a freight forwarder, which is essentially
a travel agent for containers,” lists Jodie Love, a Port of Virginia sales coordinator. “To get cargo from Asia or India or wherever it’s coming from to here in Norfolk, there are a lot of folks involved to make that happen.” “These are year-round jobs,” adds Harris, “and they are jobs that pay well in an industry that offers a lot of mobility. When I look at the cargo forecasts for the next 10 years, we’re expected to add 2 million units to what we’re already doing, which would just about double the capacity of the port. And we’re going to need a lot of men and women to support that growth.” Don’t overlook the local shipyards as a job source – they employ tens of thousands of workers in the transportation trades. Adding to the mix is an international airport and several regional airports, all needing flight crews, administrative workers, air traffic controllers and aircraft mechanics. Some of these jobs can be learned on-site through employer training programs, but most require some level of secondary education. Fortunately, local career schools, community colleges and universities offer a wealth of transportation-related certification and degree programs, from commercial driving and marine welding to logistics and engineering. Old Dominion University has developed an excellent 4-year maritime and supply chain management program that regularly places graduates at the Port of Virginia. And Tidewater Community College’s new Southeast Maritime and Transportation Center, known as the SMART Center, helps students develop career paths based on their individual interests. The SMART Center (www.maritime-technology.org) is the country’s only National Science Foundation Advanced Technology Education Center solely focused on increasing the number of well-qualified, skilled technicians in the maritime and transportation industry.
A good resource to begin researching a career in the transportation trades is the Virginia Community College System’s online Wizard (www.vawizard.org), which offers a regional overview of available jobs, how much they pay and what type of training is necessary to work in that field. You can also visit career counselors and academic advisers at local schools for expert advice in matching your interests and career goals. Overall, the transportation and logistics field encompasses hundreds of job specialties and they welcome diversity in age, gender and race. It’s an industry that is wide open to career switchers as well as new high school or college grads looking for their first job. So, if you’re looking for a career that goes the distance, a job in the transportation sector promises one smooth ride. ■

Heavy Equipment Operators The heavy equipment operator controlling an excavator, bulldozer, paving machine or other piece of equipment is in an enviable position – demand for that skill is on the rise and pay is going up. The Bureau of Labor Statistics says the need for operators is expected to grow 10% through 2024, a rate it categorizes as faster than average. They estimate that construction, maintenance, transportation and other industries will need to fill over 43,000 new positions within the next eight years. Right now, there are close to half a million operators on the job in the United States. While years ago many people could pick up the trade informally, most require special training today, especially as technology impacts the field. Part of that need for more specialized training rests with the increasingly sophisticated equipment you’ll find on a job site, says Jeff Ainslie, President of Ainslie Group, a local building company. For instance, while the lumbering bulldozer may look old-school from the outside, inside, the machine has gone thoroughly high tech. 6 | CCEW
“The heavy equipment they manufacture today Bureau, with top operators making over $77,000/ requires a lot of technical expertise,” says Ainslie. year. ■ “Instead of the bulldozers where you basically had two foot pedals and two sticks, Caterpillar has these devices that have a heads up display. They have gloves you put your hands into and based on what you do with your hands, the machine responds. It’s almost like digging with your hands – the machine mimics everything that you do.” Some operators start by taking a professional driving course and earning their commercial driver’s license (CDL), a requirement for many heavy equipment operator jobs. There are several local career and technical training schools that offer driving programs, as well as Tidewater Community College. The International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE) offers apprenticeship programs, which run three to four years. Visit iuoe147.com for information on the Norfolk-based IUOE, Local 147. Once on the job, heavy equipment operators earn a median $43,810 per year, according to the

Trucking How important is trucking to the national economy? “If you look at all the freight tonnage that moves around the country, trucks haul nearly 70 percent of it,” says Bob Costello, chief economic advisor for ATA (American Trucking Associations). “What we always say is that if you bought it, it was on a truck at some point.” And that’s a problem. “We’re coming out of the great recession, we’re moving more freight, and we’re short about 48,000 drivers,” Costello says. “If things don’t change, in ten years that number could balloon to 175,000.” That shortage of drivers means there are plenty of jobs available. “And wages, especially in some of the longer haul segments where the shortage is most acute, have been going up aggressively and will continue to go up aggressively,” says Costello, who places the median pay for drivers at about $55,000 a year. “And that’s only the start of it because you’re also going to get health insurance, you’re going to get a 401(k), you’re going to get paid time off and you’re going to get life insurance. I always tell
drivers if you’re not getting that stuff, you need to find another company to work for, it’s out there. And by the way, this is for a non-union job.” To enter the field, drivers typically take a course that preps them for the CDL (commercial driver’s license) exam. For students who take out a school loan to pay for the program, Costello has good news. “Once you get that commercial driver’s license and go to work for a trucking company, most of them will pay about $200 a month until that loan is paid off,” he says. Today’s truckers can expect to drive wellappointed trucks that ride comfortably and are packed with job-easing technology. Some trucks are even equipped with an automatic transmission and cruise control. “A lot of my member companies are buying brand new trucks with automatic transmission because young people don’t grow up learning to drive a shift stick like I did when I was younger,” says Costello. “And you’re going to have an onboard computer system that will dispatch you and keep track of your hours so you don’t have to fill out a paper log.”
Then there’s the safety technology, like blind spot detection and warnings if you get too close to another vehicle. Regulated hours of service safeguard drivers from working to the point of sleepiness, satellite navigation is the norm, and over-the-road drivers bring all the comforts of home with them, such as microwaves, small refrigerators, sinks, and televisions. “And a lot of companies have a great pet policy, so you can bring your pet on the road with you,” Costello says. The trucking culture is a good match for independent thinkers. “You’re going to have to make decisions, you’re going to have to think things through,” says Costello. “When you get dispatched, they’re going to tell you where you’ve got to go, but not necessarily how to get there. If you are a person who needs to be micro-managed, this is not for you.” Trucking can accommodate a number of lifestyles and family needs, from over-the-road runs that take drivers across the country, sometimes for a week or two at a time, to pick-up and delivery hauls within the city or region that place drivers CCEW | 7

home at night. “A lot of companies are moving to regional driving now, strategically pinpointing their work centers so that drivers stay in a 200-300 mile radius, which gives them more time with their families,” says Matthew Woods, an instructor for Tidewater Community College’s truck driving program. The field welcomes a diversity of drivers, including females, and veterans often find the field a good career match after military service. “We’re working to get more veterans into the field driving trucks and are committed to hiring over 100,000 over the next few years,” says Costello. Toward that goal, Brunson pursued the truck driving training grant, which is funded through the Department of Transportation’s Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). The grant covers the costs of completing TCC’s eightweek truck driving program leading to a Class A CDL (commercial driver’s license). “And the key part for veterans is that they’re basically hired the week after they pass their driving examination,” Brunson says. Who’s eligible? “We’re able to offer this to veterans and spouses from all services, Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, National Guard and Reserves,” says Alesia Wroten, program coordinator. Visit www.tcc. edu/military to learn more or call 757-822-7714. Many truckers say they enjoy the intangible rewards of the job. “Drivers know that without them, collectively, this economy goes nowhere,” Costello says. Finding a field where your skills are in demand is a welcome change for many who move into trucking from less secure jobs. Rebecca

Higginbotham, a program coordinator for ATI’s commercial driving program (www.auto.edu), says the school can’t train drivers fast enough to meet demand. “We have recruiters come in from different companies all the time and I’d say 90 percent of our students have job offers before they even graduate,” she says. ATI driving students take either morning or evening classes; once they’ve completed the eight-week program, they’re ready for VDOT’s commercial driver’s license exam. Whether her students slide into the drivers’ seats of tractor-trailers, local delivery trucks, buses or heavy commercial vehicles, Higginbotham says their career prospects are all the same – “They’ll always have a job. I see nothing but growth for drivers in the future.” The industry also depends on mechanics with good troubleshooting skills to keep all those trucks on the road. Most mechanics who specialize in trucks and buses are trained and certified to work on diesel engines and often have commercial driving licenses that permit them to move and test drive the large vehicles. Diesel mechanics generally bring home higher paychecks than auto mechanics. Their median pay is $42,320 per year, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, and top earners can make over $63,000 a year. For drivers and mechanics alike, the trucking industry offers a way to shift your career into high gear. ■

Bus Operators A CDL (commercial driver’s license) is a versatile credential that unlocks of number of career options. While some driving pros choose to wheel tractor-trailers along vast stretches of highway, others are answering the growing need for bus drivers to transport school kids, commuters, even travelers. Bus drivers work for regional transit services, school districts, private schools, national bus lines, charter companies, retirement communities, healthcare organizations, contractors and more. The median pay for transit, intercity and charter drivers is $36,600 per year, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. School and special client drivers earn a median $28,080 per year. Top earners bring home more than $59,000. The Bureau expects openings for bus drivers to grow at a 6% rate through 2024, adding over 37,500 new positions. To enter the industry, bus drivers must pass a Department of Transportation physical and earn a commercial driver’s license. Several local career schools and community colleges offer specialized training programs, including Tidewater Community College’s eight-week program that features state-of-the-art simulators as well as a skills range for actual wheels-on-the-road driving experience. Once students complete the TCC
course, DMV examiners come to the school to conduct the licensing tests. Age and gender is no barrier to entry. “We have males and females and our students range in age from 21 to maybe 65,â€? reports Matthew Woods, an instructor for the college’s driving program. Rebecca Higginbotham, a program coordinator for ATI’s commercial driving program, says driving a bus is a popular choice for commercial driver’s license holders. “We have some students who don’t want to do over-the-road driving and they go to work for HRT (Hampton Roads Transit) or the schools driving buses,â€? she says. “And at HRT, you have the opportunity to start out in buses and move to light rail.â€? HRT also hires support personnel, including maintenance supervisors and servicers. And for skilled mechanics, HRT is offering a $2,000 signon bonus. Along with excellent pay, HRT offers paid training programs, flexible hours and room for advancement. Driving skill, good hand-eye coordination and attention to safety are top requirements for success in this career, but drivers who also possess topnotch people skills are prized by both employers and the customers they serve. â–
