Westmoreland mentoring program: A badly needed effort is sprouting I

A mentoring program that is the next step in the Westmoreland Civic League’s efforts to better the lives of young people in Portsmouth began to take shape at a recent meeting. Tyrone Hines, Portsmouth’s tireless advocate “for the children,” was ec-

And, of course, discipline is an important factor in life that many kids don’t learn at home. Actually, many of them enjoy the rigors of being on ball teams organized by Hines and his supporters, so it figures they will go the next step to encourage the youngsters to keep their lives together. Westmoreland because that’s where Tyrone and Pat Hines live, but it’s a broad project with kids from all over the city and volunteer mentors from every corner of town. Hines has appealed to all churches for mentors, and many have stepped forward. He needs more if the program is going to reach enough children to make a difference. Once last spring when he was working on getting the ball programs started, he told me that he had the money, thanks to local foundations and individuals, but he needed people to make things work. Ned McCabe, a School Board member who has spearheaded the Portsmouth Reads program for years, has helped by writing proposals for grants. He told me last week that the mentor program will seek help from state and federal agencies to support educational aspects of the mentoring arm, which he sees as vital. But, he added, “we’re not going to fix the problems until every parent takes responsibility.” Maybe, just maybe, the influence of mentors on the
children will in turn have some effect on parenting skills. Leon Whitehurst, a retired city police officer, is chairman of the mentoring group. No doubt, he’s seen plenty of problems in the city that he believes can be solved by giving children a variety of experiences. In addition, by providing tutors the program could encourage children to do well in school, keep them from dropping out and show them what can be accomplished with just a little more work. The idea of planting a vegetable garden behind the Moun. Hermon ballfields, where the children play, is a simple, inexpensive beginning. Maybe it’s a corny idea, but I think there’s something important to be learned from tilling the land, planting the seeds, and watching tomato vines and corn stalks grow out of the ground to produce good food. Most folks today have no idea what went on before fruits and vegetables reached the supermarket. Even those of us who remember backyard Victory
Gardens of World War II sometimes lose sight of the importance of the hard work and nurturing that it takes to raise good food – or, for that matter, to raise healthy children. Although the fledgling program might not have the money immediately to take children on field trips or visits to Washington, the possibilities are unlimited. It’s important for kids to see things with their own eyes, not just through the lens of media cameras. Walking into the Capitol or coming faceto-face with the Lincoln Memorial is an awesome experience that can change one’s perspective on life. The mentoring program can make a difference in the lives of our young people. It’ll be a long, slow process, one child by one child. But it is important to this community that we start it now.
