Earn While You Learn
Apprenticeships Open Door to Well-Paying Careers What’s better than learning a skilled trade that’s in-demand and pays well? Getting paid to learn through a registered apprenticeship. Years ago when Steve Masterson graduated in the top 5% of his Virginia Beach high school class, most assumed he’d head straight to college. Instead Masterson opted for a plumbing apprenticeship. “I didn’t want the school debt was my big thing,” he explains. Not only was Masterson’s union-sponsored training fully paid for, but he earned a paycheck as well. Apprentices are full-time employees, with excellent benefits, who learn their trade through a combination of course work and hands-on training, explains Rick Brooks, with the Virginia Department of Labor and Industry. “Apprentices earn an hourly rate and they get a guaranteed increase once a year, unless the employer decides to pay them more than the graduated scale,” says Brooks. Apprenticeships not only offer one of the most reliable pathways to a well-paying job, but the opportunities for a diverse and rewarding career are unlimited. Masterson has done everything from installing residential water heaters to rigging and depositing HVAC units the size of a school bus onto office buildings. “I started as an apprentice, become a journeyperson, then I started running work as a foreman, and later went into the office as a detailer where I’d take blueprints and redesign them with what’s actually going to work,” he describes. “You’re always getting to see new things, new adventures really, because every jobsite is different, the equipment is different, it’s always something interesting.” Today he’s the Norfolk-based training coordinator for United Association’s Plumbers and Pipefitters Local Union 110, which runs the five-year 6 | CCEW
apprenticeship program that launched his career. As training coordinator, Masterson oversees courses in plumbing, pipefitting, HVAC, welding, rigging, computer assisted drawing (CAD), medical gas, and other related areas. “It’s all pipe,” he says. “It might be one millimeter or a six-foot diameter pipe, but if it’s anything to do with pipe, we handle it.” Applications for the apprenticeship program are accepted from January 1 to May 31 during business hours at the training facility located at 520 Naval Base Road in Norfolk. “We ask that you bring a valid driver’s license, social security card, birth certificate, high school diploma or GED, and a DD 214 if you’re former military,” says Masterson. “We’ll have you fill out an application, then do
a math evaluation. The evaluation isn’t a graded thing, it’s just to show me what you know; we’re not trying to scare anyone away.” Once you begin the apprenticeship, you’ll start drawing a paycheck. “You’re making money the whole time you’re training,” says Masterson. “And after you complete our program, in five years you’re making $65,000. On top of which you’re debt free – there are no school loans to repay.” In addition, there’s the satisfaction of knowing your work has made a tangible contribution to the community. “I drive my kids crazy,” laughs Masterson. “I drive around town and I’ll say, hey, you see that building over there, and they’ll say we know, we know, you helped build it.” Female apprentices do just as well as males in the program, says Masterson. “In fact, the way I see it, females typically make the best welders,” he says. “They are meticulous with details.” The program also readily accommodates apprentices with military spouses. “If a military spouse is transferred, say to San Diego, I just pick up the phone and call the training center there and say I’ve got this apprentice, can you take them. Nine times out of ten, it’s no problem, the center is thrilled to have them.” The need for apprentices in the skilled trades is only expected to grow over the next decade. “I hear from employers that they desperately need apprentices because in the next five to 10 years there will be a lot of knowledge walking out the door as more people hit retirement age,” says Brooks. That’s welcome news to job hunters looking for long-term stability, a hefty paycheck and a rewarding career. “We’re tired of being Hampton Roads’ best kept secret,” says Masterson. ■

If building a satisfying, long-term career is at the top of your jobhunting list, then look no further than the building trades. “This can be a springboard to some really major opportunities that many people don’t even know exist,” says Megan Hill, recruitment and placement coordinator at the locally-based Building Trades Academy. Hill loves to see students who have been out of work or stuck in dead end jobs move into rewarding careers. “For many, it’s life changing,” she says. Construction occupations run the gamut from helpers to drywall installers to site inspectors and most should see an increase in demand through 2024, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Jobs for solar photovoltaic installers, for example, should grow by 24% over the next eight years. Openings for brick masons, electricians, insulation workers, elevator installers, roofers, construction laborers and helpers, plumbers, and construction equipment operators are expected to increase by 1015% through that same period. Pay rates are quite good. Electricians earn a median hourly wage of $24.57 per hour with top earners claiming an annual median income of over $85,000. Plumbers command a median $50,660 per year and structural iron workers pull in a median $48,200 a year. Entry-level laborers earn a median $30,190 /yr. with excellent growth opportunities. Experienced construction tradespeople who move into inspection positions make $56,040 a year. While years ago many people could pick up a construction trade informally, most require special training today, especially as technology impacts the field. Training programs at high schools, local community colleges and technical schools cover many of these trades. Another option is the Building Trades Academy, created by the Tidewater Builders Association, where students learn those trades in special demand locally. One of the programs the academy offers is a three-month building maintenance program with courses in carpentry, plumbing, HVAC, electrical wiring and other skills. Graduates are finding jobs with a variety of employers. “These are very good jobs, most of them salaried with benefits, and there’s a career ladder,” says Erasto Beard, a vice president at the academy. “One student may go to work for a remodeler and another student can come out of the same class and be hired by an apartment community or even a builder. “One of the things we tell our students all the time is that college is a great option, but it’s not for everybody, and the building trades are a phenomenal career option. We’ve got TBA members who never went to college and they have done extremely well.” Students attend either morning or afternoon classes each weekday, with plenty of hands-on training. “The application is on our website (www.buildingtradesacademy.com),” says Beard. “Our graduates learn skills that will last them a lifetime and take them as far as they want to go,” says Hill. “There’s not a single building or home out there that doesn’t need some type of maintenance or care, whether it’s on a small scale or large, so these are jobs that really don’t ever expire.” ■ CCEW | 7

HAMPTON ROADS
TRANSIT
Transportation & Logistics As home to one of the world’s busiest ports, Hampton Roads is a transportation and logistics hub that generates a significant number of steady, well-paying jobs that can’t be outsourced. “What we’re seeing is considerable growth that is being driven by an improving economy,â€? says Joe Harris, a spokesperson for the Port of Virginia. “Specifically we have a lot of natural assets these large ships want to utilize – we have deep water, we don’t have bridges in the way, the terminals are modern and efficient, and we’re within a day’s drive of two-thirds of the nation’s population. We’re exceptionally busy.â€? They are also always hiring, whether it’s warehouse supervisors, forklift operators, or logistics wizards who can efficiently route cargo from Asia to Hampton Roads. “These are year-round jobs,â€? adds Harris, “and they are jobs that pay well in an industry that offers a lot of mobility. When I look at the cargo forecasts for the next 10 years, we’re expected to add 2 million units to what we’re already doing, which would just about double the capacity of the port. And we’re going to need a lot of men and women to support that growth.â€? Once cargo is offloaded at the port, it’s hauled to regional distribution centers or further inland, creating a strong demand for truck drivers. In fact, trucks haul almost 70 percent of all the freight tonnage that moves around the country, says Bob Costello, chief economic advisor for ATA (American Trucking Associations). “What we always say is that if you bought it, it was on a truck at some point.â€? And that’s a problem. “We’re coming out of the great recession, we’re moving more freight, and we’re short about 48,000 drivers,â€? Costello says. “If things don’t change, in ten years that number could balloon to 175,000.â€? The shortage of drivers means there are plenty of jobs available. “And wages, especially in some of the longer haul segments where the shortage is most acute, have been going up aggressively and will continue to go up aggressively,â€? says Costello, who places the median pay for drivers at about $55,000 a year. “And that’s only the start of it because you’re also going to get health insurance, you’re going to get a 401(k), you’re going to get paid time off and you’re going to get life insurance. I always tell drivers if you’re not getting that stuff, you need to find another company to work for, it’s out there. And by the way, this is for a non-union job.â€? Finding a field where your skills are in demand is a welcome change for many who move into trucking from less secure jobs. Rebecca Higginbotham, a program coordinator for ATI’s commercial driving program (www.auto. edu), says the school can’t train drivers fast enough to meet demand. “We have recruiters come in from different companies all the time and I’d say 90 percent of our students have job offers before they even graduate,â€? she says. ATI driving students take either morning or evening classes; once they’ve completed the eight-week program, they’re ready for VDOT’s commercial driver’s license exam. Whether her students slide into the drivers’ seats of tractor-trailers, local delivery trucks, buses or heavy commercial vehicles, Higginbotham says their career prospects are all the same – “They’ll always have a job. I see nothing but growth for drivers in the future.â€? â–

For those with a knack for problem solving, welcome to the well-paying world of automotive techs. This rapidly evolving field has been heavily impacted by technology, from diagnostic software to common hand tools. “Even the wrenches are shaped differently – they’re made to fit your hand ergonomically so you don’t develop joint problems after 20 or so years of using them on the job,” says Mark Maund, the auto program coordinator at Tidewater Tech. Computerized diagnostic equipment has been in place awhile now, but even that is seeing significant upgrades. “It’s wireless,” says Maund. “We’ve got so many computer tools and pieces of equipment to attach to a car and you used to plug those wires into the dashboard. Now you can pick up that information on a computer in the shop with your scanning device while the car is outside.” Yes, students can still expect to spend hands-on time repairing engines, brakes and other auto systems – they’ll just bring high-tech tools and computer savvy to each job. If you enjoy working with your mind as much as your hands, this is the field to go into, says Maund. “They’re not auto mechanics anymore, they’re technicians,” says Rubin Beno, director of TCC’s Regional Automotive Center. “And the reason for that is the complexity of the vehicles they work on. Not only do they perform maintenance work, but they have to be able to diagnose and repair the vehicle, they have to make determinations, read a wiring diagram, follow a flow chart, and understand computer networking – it’s amazing the technology that goes into these vehicles.” To get started, technicians earn either an associate’s degree or diploma in automotive technology, which prepares them for the ASE certification exams, the industry standard. Tidewater Tech’s program takes 45 weeks to complete, and Maund regularly places graduates in local dealerships, independent repair shops and other workplaces, sometimes before they’ve even finished the program. At TCC, Rubin sees students who already hold degrees taking seats next to new high school grads. “We have students with associate’s degrees, bachelor’s degrees, even a couple who have master’s degrees,” he says. “Some of them couldn’t find jobs, and some found work they didn’t like well enough to do for the rest of their lives. It’s amazing how well people do when they find something they’re passionate about.” The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects a 5% growth rate in automotive mechanic and tech openings through 2024, with a median hourly pay rate of $18.20. Experienced mechanics with formal automotive training and topnotch diagnostic and computer skills can command more than $63,000 a year. There can be other perks as well. Right now, HRT (Hampton Roads Transit) is offering skilled mechanics a $2,000 sign-on bonus, generous benefits and opportunities for advancement. “There is so much opportunity for any student who wants to work,” says Rubin. “Cars aren’t going away. They may evolve, but even with new technology, like cars that drive themselves, you still have to have people who can diagnose and repair them. This is a skill you can take anywhere.” Maund agrees – “If you go to school for auto mechanics, you will find work if you want it – and it will be a career, it won’t be a job.” ■

Transitioning from the Military?
Earn VIP status in new training program If you’ve worked for Uncle Sam, welcome to the world of VIPs – Veterans in Pipefitting, the training program for active duty military personnel who are transitioning to civilian life. Sponsored by the United Association of Journeymen and Apprentices of the Plumbing and Pipefitting Industry, the VIP program (uavip.org/ video) offers service members no-cost training in HVAC, welding, and other in-demand trades in an 18-week accelerated program that qualifies them to work with contractors across the country. “The program we offer locally at NOB is HVAC, and we have nine other programs around the country,” says Steve Masterson, training coordinator.
VIPs are prized by employers who like the combination of technical skills and soft skills veterans offer. “They know how to get up on time, they show up for work, they know how to talk to people, they work well in teams,” Masterson says. “Most have job placement before they even finish the program.” Participants earn college credit and can move into a full apprenticeship program if they choose. “Right now, this is still a new program; we’re getting ready to graduate our third class,” says Masterson. “There are still a lot of people in the military who don’t even know we’re there – we’re trying to get the word out.” For more information, visit www.uavip.org. ■

One of the hallmarks of a skilled trades career is exceptional opportunity for advancement. John McCarthy, a program coordinator at Tidewater Tech, often tells his students to stop thinking in terms of limits. “The only limit is your imagination,” he says. “You can do anything in these trades that you need to do. “We have a building maintenance program here – every building needs somebody to take care of it. I have a friend who does that kind of work in commercial real estate and he’s making upwards of $70,000 a year doing a blue collar job. Young people have been brainwashed into thinking that you have to wear a suit and tie to work to be successful.” The field is a diverse one. Anything a skilled tradesperson builds – a highway, a power plant, an apartment building – requires another skilled tradesperson to maintain. Make that a small army of skilled tradespeople. From public parks to office towers to schools, you’ll find grounds and janitorial maintenance crews mowing and cleaning. At factories, technicians lubricate and test huge mechanical systems. Along roadways, crews repair damaged asphalt and clear drainage ditches. In addition to being sought after by private industry, maintenance tradespeople are also recruited by the communities they live in. For instance, HRSD (Hampton Roads Sanitation District) attracts those who like the idea of working for an organization that is committed to safeguarding the environment and providing services that residents depend on. “At HRSD, we hire everyone from plant operators and engineers all the way through instrumentation specialist, electricians, maintenance operators, heavy equipment operators, facility assistants and in my division we have interceptor technicians, pump station supervisors and conveyance system supervisors,” lists Chris Stephan, HRSD’s Chief of Interceptor Operations, North Shore. “A lot of people start at an assistant position where they kind of get their feet wet and find out what we do, decide what they like,” describes Stephan. “The beautiful thing about HRSD is that you can work your way up the chain. It all depends on initiative, drive and capabilities.” If more training is required to make the job you want a good match, HRSD offers generous education benefits, including 4-year apprenticeship programs in eight different trades. “Upon graduation, you’d be a licensed journeyman in your trade,” Stephan says. Unlike a lot of other employment sectors, wastewater treatment and management is not a field that can be outsourced. “It’s not only job security and excellent benefits, but you also have the added benefit of a purpose in your job,” says Stephan. “You can go into a lot of jobs, and they’re good jobs, very honorable, but here we’re actively working to protect the environment.” Educational requirements vary by job from a high school diploma to a college degree and workers often find good opportunities for career advancement. The Bureau of Labor Statistics expects the need for general maintenance and repair workers to increase by 6% through 2024. ■

Shipbuilding & Repair The shipbuilding and ship repair industry supports over 60,000 jobs in Virginia and contributes over $5.5 billion to the state’s bottom line, but it’s not all smooth sailing right now. For skilled tradespeople who work in the marine sector, there are more well-paying jobs than qualified people to fill them and employers are scrambling to fill that gap. “The average age in the shipyard trades is roughly about 55,” says William “Bill” Crow, president of the locally-based Virginia Ship Repair Association. “So with 40,000 workers in the area, you’re going to have to replace about 16,000 to 18,000 of them in the next six years or so.” Not only are the jobs in demand, but the paychecks can be quite high, says Crow. “There was a maritime administration study completed two years ago, and the average yearly income of shop-level and below workers across the ship repair and building industry was $73,000,” he says. “Now your 18-year-old is going to start out as a helper in the shipyard, they’re not going to make that $73,000 right away,” notes Crow. “But the other part of it is, when you talk about the industry and the shortages in staffing that we’re facing, I got a call last year from someone asking how raising the minimum wage would affect shipbuilding and repair, and I said it won’t. We are already paying well above minimum wage, even for a helper to come into our shipyards to do a fire watch or those types of things.” So with those kind of wages, why aren’t job seekers looking to the shipbuilding and repair trades? “We, as a country, have gotten too wrapped around the idea that someone has to have a 4-year degree and we’ve lost focus on the trades and technical certifications,” says Crow. “We don’t grasp their significance and importance to our economy.” Crow would also like to banish outdated notions about trade labor as dull, dreary work – instead, problem solvers and creative people are right at home. “You’ve got to have your basic science, technology and math, but these skilled tradespeople are also artists,” he says. “Welders are Picassos in their own way, they really are. They lay a bead that keeps water inside a pipe or keeps a ship from sinking. It takes them time to hone their skills, their talents, their abilities. It’s not a rote memory skill.” For great pay, generous benefits and rewarding work, the shipbuilding and ship repair trades are a smart choice. ■
