Made in America:
Manufacturing a Great Career The technology is impressive, the jobs are intellectually rewarding, the pay and benefits outstanding – welcome to the field of manufacturing where skilled tradespeople are in high demand. “There is a skills gap in manufacturing,” notes A.J. Jorgenson, communications director for the Washington D.C.-based Manufacturing Institute (www.themanufacturinginstitute.org). “With baby boomer retirements and new growth in the industry, we estimate a need for about 2 million new workers by 2025.” To help fill those positions, manufacturers are raising pay. “On average, manufacturing employees nationwide make higher wages and benefits than any other industry in the country,” says Nick D’Antonio, project manager for the institute’s Dream It, Do It initiative. “If manufacturers can get the talent they need, they are willing to pay more for those employees. And when you look at overall compensation on top of wages, it’s a commitment to education reimbursement and support, continuous development programs, a flexible work environment and excellent healthcare insurance.” So why aren’t these jobs being snatched up? Misconceptions about the type of work, says D’Antonio. “This is not your grandfather’s manufacturing job. Today you work in clean facilities that are smarter than they have ever been before, which means employees have the opportunity to interact with some of the most advanced technologies in the marketplace. You’re not just putting widgets together and doing the same old task all day.” Think automation, connected enterprise, robotics, 3-D printing, clean rooms and clean suits – “It’s the next generation of making things,” says Jorgenson. Adds D’Antonio, “These are jobs that require quick decision making on the plant floor. A lot of the traditional kind of mundane manufacturing jobs have gone overseas, but one of the things we’ve retained here is a lot of niche and customized manufacturing. “With custom manufacturing, employees come in and look at the work order and end up 6 | CCEW
developing and producing changes each and every day, which means a new challenge, a new puzzle to solve, every time they come into the workplace. Some of the young people I have spoken with who work in manufacturing say this is probably one of the things they enjoy most about their careers.” Manufacturing workers also like the fact that they’re producing crucial pieces of equipment and cutting edge technology. “You end up playing a major role in the lives of other people,” says D’Antonio, “whether you’re responsible for a part that helps an airplane fly or you create a medical device that keeps someone alive. Your end product is out there in your community making a difference in everyday life.” Another perk to working in the field is a supportive framework for advancement. “It’s important to note that it’s not just a job, it’s a career,” says Jorgenson. “You can go from machinist to operator to programmer. You’re not going to have the same job you’re doing at the start of your career that you will at the end.” How do you get started in the field? “Because of the skills gap that exists, many manufacturers will train people they identify as hard workers,” says D’Antonio. “But to position yourself optimally, look at your local community college or technical college to get the relevant training.” In our area, Tidewater Tech has an excellent welding program, and Tidewater Community College offers a wide variety of manufacturingrelated certification and degree programs, including coursework in mechatronics, electronics technology, electrical technology, programming, industrial technology, industrial management, occupational safety, industrial maintenance technology and quality assurance. “And one of the great things about manufacturing,” says Jorgenson, “is that these are technical skills you’re acquiring. So you can work across industries, you can go across the nation – quite frankly, you can go across the world with these skills.” Manufacturers are proactively recruiting young people into the field and toward that goal the institute developed their Dream It, Do, It program.
“In Virginia, the program is led by the Virginia Manufacturers Association,” says D’Antonio. “The purpose of the program is to provide young people with the opportunities to engage with and experience the industry, usually in a competition or simulated setting.” Learn more about Dream It, Do It online at www.dreamitdoitvirginia.com, including summer technology camp schedules. Along with young people, career switchers are also finding a home in manufacturing. “Employers really do value those people who have experience in the workforce and have gained soft skills – they can work on a team, make decisions, show up on time and work in a professional environment,” says D’Antonio. “There is going to be some training required, but many times there are accelerated programs available for adult learners to help expedite their transition into manufacturing.” Bringing more females into the field is one of the industry’s priorities, says Jorgenson. “Women represent about a quarter of the manufacturing workforce, even though they are a half of the workforce in total,” she says. “If we can close the gender gap, we can help close the skills gap.” Every year at an awards gala, the institute’s Step Ahead initiative recognizes the accomplishments of 100 women who work in the field along with 30 emerging leaders under 30 years old. “It’s showing women someone who looks like them succeeding in manufacturing,” explains Jorgenson. “We know that having a diversity of thought actually increases profits, it’s what makes things work.” For young people, for career switchers, for males and females of every ethnicity, manufacturing offers a rewarding, generously-compensated, longterm career. “We’re going to see new types of jobs developing that will be even more exciting and will require thoughtful, creative individuals,” says D’Antonio. “Facilities are becoming smarter, more integrated with technology, and those individuals who get involved with the industry today will be the first line of workers who get to ride this wave and manage it moving forward. They really will be the best and the brightest.” ■

Truck Drivers The American Trucking Association places the number of truck drivers on the road at 3.5 million, making that job sector one of the largest in the country, and it’s only expected to grow. In fact, the Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that over 260,000 new drivers will be needed by 2022. The rising demand for more drivers means trucking careers are shifting into high gear. Simple demographics is largely responsible for the growth spike. The Economist places the median age of drivers at 47 and the number of retiring truckers at 100 a day, with some companies offering signing bonuses to attract new drivers to the field. Rebecca Higginbotham, program coordinator for ATI’s commercial driving program, says the school can’t train drivers fast enough. “We have recruiters come in from different companies all the time and I’d say 90 percent of our students have job offers before they even graduate,” she says. “Overall, with the economy picking up, we’re facing a shortage of drivers right now.” To enter the industry, drivers must pass a Department of Transportation physical and earn a commercial driver’s license (CDL). Several local career schools and community colleges offer specialized training programs, including ATI’s eight-week program. “We have both morning and evening classes,” says Higginbotham. Today’s truckers today can expect to drive well-appointed trucks that ride comfortably and are packed with job-easing technology. Some trucks are even equipped with an automatic transmission and cruise control. Regulated hours of service safeguard drivers from working to the
point of sleepiness, satellite navigation is the norm, and over-the-road drivers bring all the comforts of home with them, such as microwaves, small refrigerators, sinks, and televisions. This is also a career that accommodates a number of lifestyles and family needs – there are drivers who opt for cross-country hauls and those who prefer regional pick-up and delivery runs. “A lot of companies are moving to regional driving now, strategically pinpointing their work centers so that drivers stay in a 200-300 mile radius, which gives them more time at home with their families,” says Matthew Woods, an instructor for Tidewater Community College’s truck driving program. Age and gender is no barrier to entry. “We have males and females and our students range in age from 21 to maybe 65,” Woods says. “Most of our students probably start off at about $36,000 a year, but a seasoned truck driver with maybe five years of experience will make anywhere from $50,000 to around $70,000,” he says. Along with good pay comes the security of knowing that a driving career isn’t vulnerable to outsourcing, which is another great reason to consider taking your career on the road. Higginbotham agrees. “Drivers will always have a job,” she says. “We have some students who don’t want to do over-the-road driving and they go to work for HRT or the schools driving buses. And at HRT, you have the opportunity to start out in buses and move to light rail. I see nothing but growth in the future.” ■ CCEW | 7

Welding If you want a resume that opens doors everywhere, become a welder. “There are tons of opportunities for people who are coming into the field as older workers start to retire,” says John McCarthy, the welding program coordinator at Tidewater Tech. “We see it every day as employers try to fill that gap, so we have partnerships with local companies who are working with us to try and bring some younger people into the field.” To enter the field, welders earn an industryaccredited certification, usually after completing a training program. “To become a welder, it takes a lot less time and investment than attending a 4-year institution to receive your bachelor’s degree,” notes Nick D’Antonio, a project manager at the Manufacturing Institute. “So you could potentially be making higher wages than someone who has put themselves in greater debt for lower wages.” Welding students at Tidewater Tech enroll in a 30-week course, says McCarthy. “After they complete the course they can go in at maybe two or
three pay grades above the person who hasn’t had any training at all, especially places like Newport News Shipbuilding – we work with them all the time.” According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, top earners report an annual pay rate of over $58,590, while the median hourly wages are $17.99 per hour. Welding engineers command a median $84,000 a year and welders who are willing to travel and work under challenging conditions can earn well over $100,000 a year. GoWelding.org, a national trade organization, places the pay of traveling pipe welders between $50,000 to $185,000 a year, while welders who work in military support positions in the Middle East can start at $160,000 to more than $200,000 a year. Some welders move into supervisory or management positions while others branch into programming or operating robotic and other welding machines. Because many firms that employ welders run two or three shifts, it’s possible to work a schedule that accommodates personal and
family needs. Welders may find themselves in a variety of environmental conditions, from manning a workbench on the floor of a plant to perching atop a high-rise to working underwater. Welders travel with automotive racing teams and sail the world as part of a cruise ship maintenance crew. Most welders work in manufacturing-related businesses, including robotics and biomechanics, though in our region, shipyards and their subcontractors are one of the largest sources of jobs. This is a field that enthusiastically welcomes female workers. “In my career at Newport News Shipbuilding, females were some of the best welders I dealt with,” shares McCarthy. “The female students in our program do really well.” Career switchers are welcome as well. “We have a lot of military students,” McCarthy says, “and I had one guy graduate not too long ago who had a degree in psychology.” In demand and well paid – a welding career is hard to beat. ■

Construction Trades If building a satisfying, long-term career is at the top of your job-hunting list, then look no further than the building trades. “This can be a springboard to some really major opportunities that many people don’t even know exist,” says Megan Hill, recruitment and placement coordinator at the locally-based Building Trades Academy. Hill loves to see students who have been out of work or stuck in dead end jobs move into rewarding careers. “For many, it’s life changing,” she says. Construction occupations run the gamut from helpers to drywall installers to site inspectors and most should see an increase in demand through 2024, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Pay rates are quite good. Electricians earn a median hourly wage of $24.57 per hour with top earners claiming an annual median income of over $85,000. Plumbers command a median $50,660 per year and brickmasons a median $47,650 /yr. Structural iron workers make a median $48,200 a year. Entry-level laborers earn a median $30,190 /yr. with excellent growth opportunities. Experienced construction tradespeople who move into inspection positions make $56,040 a year. In commercial construction, elevator installers bring home a median $78,620. While years ago many people could pick up a construction trade informally, most require special training today, especially as technology impacts the field. Training programs at high schools, local community colleges and technical schools cover many of these trades. Another option is the Building Trades Academy, created by the Tidewater Builders Association, where students learn those trades in special demand locally. “Our program started in 1978 with seed funds from the federal government to train students who are economically disadvantaged at no cost to them,” says Erasto Beard, a vice president at the academy. One of the programs the academy offers is a three-month building maintenance program with courses in carpentry, plumbing, HVAC, electrical wiring and other skills. Graduates are finding jobs with a variety of employers. “These are very good jobs, most of them salaried with benefits, and there’s a career ladder,” says Beard. “One student may go to work for a remodeler and another student can come out of the same class and be hired by an apartment community or even a builder. “One of the things we tell our students all the time is that college is a great option, but it’s not for everybody, and the building trades are a phenomenal career option. You’ll find people who are very, very successful. We’ve got TBA members who never went to college and they have done extremely well.” Students attend either morning or afternoon classes each weekday, with plenty of hands-on training. “The application is on our website (www. buildingtradesacademy.com),” says Beard. “Our graduates learn skills that will last them a lifetime and take them as far as they want to go,” says Hill. “There’s not a single building or home out there that doesn’t need some type of maintenance or care, whether it’s on a small scale or large, so these are jobs that really don’t ever expire.” ■

Automotive Technicians How much has the field of automotive mechanics changed over just the past decade? “Even the wrenches are shaped differently – they’re made to fit your hand ergonomically so you don’t develop joint problems after 20 or so years of using them on the job,â€? says Mark Maund, Tidewater Tech’s automotive program coordinator. Computerized diagnostic equipment has been in place awhile now, but even that is seeing significant upgrades. “It’s wireless,â€? says Maund. “We’ve got so many computer tools and pieces of equipment to attach to a car and you used to plug those wires into the dashboard. Now you can pick up that information on a computer in the shop with your scanning device while the car is outside.â€? Maund has already integrated the wireless technology into his classrooms. “We pull the diagnostic data from the computer, put it up on a wall in the classroom and teach with it,â€? he says. Yes, students can still expect to spend hands-on time repairing engines, brakes and other auto systems – they’ll just bring high-tech tools and computer savvy to each job. If you enjoy working with your mind as much as your hands, this is the field to go into, says Maund. To get started, technicians earn either an associate’s degree or diploma in automotive mechanics, which prepares them for the ASE certification exams, the industry standard. Tidewater Tech’s program takes 45 weeks to complete, and Maund regularly places graduates in local dealerships and independent repair shops, sometimes before they’ve even finished the program. Females do as well as males, says Maund, and the field attracts new high school grads as well as career switchers and military veterans. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, automotive techs earn a median hourly pay rate of $17.84; experienced technicians with formal automotive training and top-notch diagnostic and computer skills can command more than $62,000 a year. There can be other perks as well. Right now, HRT (Hampton Roads Transit) is offering skilled mechanics a $2,000 sign-on bonus, generous benefits and excellent opportunities for advancement. “If you go to school for auto mechanics, you will find work if you want it – and it will be a career, it won’t be a job,â€? Maund says. â–

Maintenance One of the hallmarks of a skilled trades career is exceptional opportunity for advancement. John McCarthy, program coordinator at Tidewater Tech, often tells his students to stop thinking in terms of limits. “The only limit is your imagination,” he says. “You can do anything in these trades that you need to do. “We have a building maintenance program here – every building needs somebody to take care of it. I have a friend who does that kind of work in commercial real estate and he’s making upwards of $70,000 a year doing a blue collar job. Young people have been brainwashed into thinking that you have to wear a suit and tie to work to be successful.” In addition to being sought after by private industry, maintenance tradespeople are also recruited by the communities they live in. For instance, HRSD (Hampton Roads Sanitation District) attracts those who like the idea of working for an organization that is committed to safeguarding the environment and providing services that residents depend on. “At HRSD, we hire everyone from plant operators and engineers all the way through instrumentation specialist, electricians, maintenance operators, heavy equipment operators, facility assistants and in my division we have interceptor technicians, pump station supervisors and conveyance system supervisors,” lists Chris Stephan, an engineer with HRSD. “A lot of people start at an assistant position where they kind of get their feet wet and find out what we do, decide what they like,” describes Stephan. “The beautiful thing about HRSD is that you can work your way up the chain. It all depends on initiative, drive and capabilities.” Other good options in this job category include municipal, commercial and residential property maintenance. From public parks to office towers to schools, you’ll find grounds and janitorial maintenance crews mowing and cleaning. At factories, technicians lubricate and test huge mechanical systems. And along roadways, crews repair damaged asphalt and clear drainage ditches. Clearly, the roster of maintenance professionals is a diverse one. ■

If you want to find some of the best paid workers in the country, look no further than the manufacturing sector. According to the Manufacturing Institute, a Washington D.C.-based think tank that tracks jobs and earnings, people who choose manufacturing careers can expect a 9 percent premium in combined wages and benefits compared to the U.S. average – that’s a compensation package that translates to $33.93/hr. A USA Today report places the yearly pay of the average manufacturing worker at an eye-catching $77,505, including benefits. It’s a figure that surprises many people who picture rows of laborers toiling for minimum wage. And if your impression of a manufacturing job is a dreary grind in a hot, dirty plant, it’s time to revise that image as well. “Often when people think of the manufacturing trades, they revert back to the 70s steel mills with someone working in a blast furnace under hazardous work conditions,” describes Charlie Kane, president of locally-based Busch LLC, an industry leader in vacuum technology equipment and pump assembly. “That’s not what most of today’s industry and manufacturing positions are. For instance, we work on some pretty sophisticated manufacturing processes, very automated, with a lot of computer controls, and that work is done in a very clean, air-conditioned environment.” You’ll find a large variety of skills represented in manufacturing. “CNC (computer numerically controlled) machine operator is one we’re always looking at, mechanical assembly people, electrical technicians, and we have warehouse positions,” lists Kane. Other manufacturing jobs include fabricators, machinists, quality controllers, maintenance techs, operations managers, controls engineers, machine operators and line supervisors. “I’ve got people working in mechanic assembly, and in electrician and plumber roles, who are making much better money than people realize – better money than many people with four-year degrees,” he notes. “People need to understand that manufacturing is still a great career opportunity. The interesting thing is that the type of manufacturing that is left is increasingly more specialized and more sophisticated. You’re doing something with ultra-pure metal or ultra-pure chemicals, it’s ultra-fast or ultrasmall, and the jobs are more skills-based. It’s a higher-end type of job today, and these are jobs that are actually growing.” ■
