By Air, Land and Sea: Transportation Industry Keeps Region Moving

W

hile transportation and logistics workers are in demand across the country, some geographic pockets are especially rich in steady, wellpaying jobs. As home to one of the world’s busiest ports, Hampton Roads is a transportation hub that generates a significant number of jobs that can’t be outsourced. Last year alone, the Port of Virginia handled over 2700 vessel calls and processed almost 20 million tons of cargo, including 1.3 million container units, generating 374,000 jobs throughout Virginia. The economic impact to the state? A cool $60 billion in total revenue (www.portofvirginia.com). “What we’re seeing is considerable growth that is being driven by an improving economy,” says Joe Harris, a spokesperson for the Port of Virginia. “Specifically we have a lot of natural assets these large ships want to utilize – we have deep water, we don’t have bridges in the way, the terminals are modern and efficient, and we’re within a day’s drive of 2/3s of the nation’s population. We’re exceptionally busy.” They are also always hiring. “It might be a warehouse supervisor or a forklift operator or a freight forwarder, which is essentially a travel agent for containers,” lists Jodie Love, a Port of Virginia sales coordinator. “To get cargo from Asia or India or wherever it’s coming from to here in Norfolk, there are a lot of folks involved to make that happen.” “These are year-round jobs,” adds Harris, “and they are jobs that pay well in an industry that offers a lot of mobility. When I look at the cargo forecasts for the next 10 years, we’re expected to add 2 million units to what we’re already doing, which would just about double the capacity of the port. And we’re going to need a lot of men and women to support that growth.” Once cargo is offloaded at the port, it’s hauled to regional distribution centers or further inland by truck

or rail, creating a strong demand for drivers and railway workers. The region also boasts the world’s largest naval base, which anchors major shipyards where vessels of all kinds are built and repaired – that translates to over 40,000 shipyard-related jobs. Adding to the mix is an international airport and several regional airports, all needing flight crews, administrative workers, air traffic controllers and aircraft mechanics. Some of these jobs can be learned on-site through employer training programs, but most require some level of secondary education. Fortunately, local career schools, community colleges and universities offer a wealth of transportation-related certification and degree programs, from commercial driving and marine welding to logistics and engineering. “In the last six months, a lot of folks have come from Old Dominion University’s maritime program (www.odu.edu/business/center/port),” says Shaune Thomas, a Port of Virginia talent acquisition manager. “They come out with a 4-year degree with a maritime focus.” Love points to Tidewater Community College’s new SMART Center (www.maritime-technology. org) as another resource. “They are very good at developing career paths for students that are specific to the interests of each student,” says Love. The SMART Center, sponsored by the National Science Foundation, is one of 39 “Advanced Technological Education Centers” and the only one with a maritime and transportation concentration. Overall, the field encompasses hundreds of job specialties that cater to a wide variety of interests and they all welcome diversity in age, gender and race. It’s an industry that is wide open to career switchers as well as new high school or college grads looking for their first job. So, if you’re looking for a career that goes the distance, a job in the transportation sector promises one smooth ride. ■

Ambulance Service I

t’s not a job for the faint of heart, but people who possess quick reaction times and strong critical thinking skills are a perfect match for a career in medical transport. “Many of the situations we deal with are emergencies where someone’s life depends on how we react, so we have to be able to take in a lot of information rapidly and then make quick decisions – all while remaining calm when others aren’t,” describes Kyle Langley, a paramedic and operations supervisor with Sentara Healthcare’s Medical Transport, LLC.

Most transport professionals are EMTs or paramedics. In Virginia, drivers must also be certified as Emergency Vehicle Operators before they are allowed behind the wheel of an ambulance. Langley received his training as a volunteer for a rescue squad and says that’s one of the best ways to enter the field. “There are volunteer rescue squads all over the state where you can get experience and find out if that’s something you want to do,” he says. “In addition, many of those volunteer rescue squads offer training in-house or they’ll offer to help pay for your training.” Virginia Beach Emergency Medical Services (www.vabeachems.com) offers EMT training to volunteers in exchange for a commitment to do rescue work for the city for two years. “We usually do about four or five EMT classes in-house a year,” says Christi Budy, a paramedic and captain with Virginia Beach EMS. Visit www.vbvrs.org or call 757-385-1999 for orientation information. Another option is to go through a community college program. “The EMT

basic course is usually about a semester long,” says Jason Ambrose, the EMT program coordinator at Tidewater Community College, “though we also have an accelerated 3 ½ week program. The paramedic program ends up being about two years.” What does it take to be successful? “You need to care about people and have a genuine desire to provide a service to your community,” says Ambrose. “You’re the one people will be looking to for help. And you’re going to be doing something not many other people can do.” Emergency medical service professionals work for hospitals, medical transport companies, municipal rescue squads and fire departments, retirement communities – “There are even government contracts that take you overseas,” Langley adds. The job is a rewarding one, whether dealing with a life or death situation or simply holding the hand of an elderly patient during a routine medical transport, says Langley. “It’s the smile, the appreciation,” he says. “You go home every day knowing you made a difference. It’s a great field.” ■

Trucking/Mechanics D

ecades ago the image of the burly truck driver was a well-earned one. “I remember when trucks didn’t have power steering,” recalls Totton Walton, who recently retired as a vice president of CrossGlobe Group, a national trucking, warehousing and logistics company. “You’d be lucky to have an air conditioner working or AM radio.” Today? “Trucks ride like they’re floating,” Walton says. “They have air ride suspension and have come an extremely long way in comfort. Some trucks even have automatic transmission.” Regulated hours of service safeguard drivers from working to the point of sleepiness, satellite navigation is the norm, and over-the-road drivers bring all the comforts of home with them. “Microwaves, small refrigerators, sinks, televisions,” lists Walton. “It’s a whole different world for a driver now.” The comfort upgrades are important, but so is the job security. “Take a look around the room that you’re sitting in and name one thing in the room that was

not transported by truck at one point or another, whether it’s the handle on the door or the glass on the picture frames,” points out Francis McComas, a vice president with MCO Transport. Our dependence on trucks helps explain the nearly 3.5 million truckers on the road today. The sector is already one of the largest in the country, but by 2022 the Bureau of Labor Statistics expects the number of jobs for tractor-trailer drivers to jump by 11%. Simple demographics is largely responsible for the growth spike. The Economist places the median age of drivers at 47 and the number of retiring truckers at 100 a day, with some companies offering signing bonuses to attract new drivers to the field. Rebecca Higginbotham, a program coordinator for ATI’s commercial driving program, says the school can’t train drivers fast enough. “We have recruiters come in from different companies all the time and I’d say 90 percent of our students have job offers before they even graduate,” she says. “Overall, with the economy picking up, we’re facing a shortage

of drivers right now.” ATI driving students take either morning or evening classes; once they’ve completed the eightweek program, they’re ready for VDOT’s commercial driver’s license (CDL) exam. The pay can be quite good, adds Higginbothan.

The Tractor-Trailer Driving Certificate program is designed to prepare students to meet the needs of the highway cargo industry. The Classroom module prepares students for the written portion of the Commercial Drivers License (CDL) Examination.

“For beginning drivers, it probably runs close to $37,000 a year, and I’d say ten years down the road they should be making $60,000 or better.” Whether her students slide into the driver’s seats of tractor-trailers, local delivery trucks, buses or heavy commercial vehicles, Higginbotham says their career prospects are all the same – “They’ll always have a job. I see nothing but growth for drivers in the future.” Along with longevity, this is a career that can accommodate a number of lifestyles and family needs, from over-the-road runs that take drivers all the way across the country to pick-up and delivery hauls within their city or region. “A lot of companies are moving to regional driving now, strategically pinpointing their work centers so that drivers stay in a 200-300 mile radius, which gives them more time at home with their families,” says Matthew Woods, an instructor for Tidewater Community College’s truck driving program. Aside from good pay, secure jobs, and a variety of driving schedules, this is a career that appeals to

those who prize their independence. “It’s good for the type of person who doesn’t want to work in an office or a warehouse with someone looking over their shoulder,” says Walton. “For self-starters who can produce results, drive safely, and like getting out and meeting different people, this is the ideal job for them.” The industry also depends on mechanics with good troubleshooting skills to keep all those trucks on the road. Most mechanics who specialize in trucks and buses are trained and certified to work on diesel engines and often have commercial driving licenses that permit them to move and test drive the large vehicles. Diesel mechanics generally bring home higher paychecks than auto mechanics. Their median pay is $42,320 per year, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, and top earners can make over $63,000 a year. CDL (commercial driver’s license) is a versatile credential that unlocks of number of career options. While some driving pros choose to wheel tractor-trailers along vast stretches of highway, others are answering the growing need for bus drivers to transport school kids, commuters, even travelers. Bus drivers work for regional transit services, school districts, private schools, national bus lines, charter companies, retirement communities, healthcare organizations, contractors and more. The median pay for transit, intercity and charter drivers is $36,600 per year, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. School and special client drivers earn a median $28,080 per year. Top earners bring home more than $59,000. The Bureau expects openings for drivers to grow at a 9% rate through 2022, adding over 57,000 new positions. To enter the industry, bus drivers must pass a Department of Transportation physical and earn a commercial driver’s license. Several local career schools and community colleges offer specialized training programs, including Tidewater Community College’s eight-week program that features state-ofthe-art simulators as well as a skills range for actual wheels-on-the-road driving experience. Once students complete the TCC course, DMV examiners come to the school to conduct the licensing tests. Age and gender is no barrier to entry. “We have males and females and our students range in age from 21 to maybe 65,” reports Matthew Woods, an instructor for the college’s driving program. Rebecca Higginbotham, a program coordinator for ATI’s commercial driving program, says driving a bus is a popular choice for commercial driver’s license holders. “We have some students who don’t want to do over-the-road driving and they go to work for HRT (Hampton Roads Transit) or the schools driving buses,” she says. “And at HRT, you have the opportunity to start out in buses and move to light rail.” HRT also hires support personnel, including maintenance supervisors and servicers. And for skilled mechanics, HRT is offering a $2,000 sign-on bonus. Along with excellent pay, HRT offers paid training programs, flexible hours and room for advancement. Driving skill, good hand-eye coordination and attention to safety are top requirements for success in this career, but drivers who also possess top-notch people skills are prized by both employers and the customers they serve. ■

Construction O

ne day the transporter of Star Trek lore may become a reality, but until then we live in a to-and-fro economy, dependent upon miles and miles of roadways and bridges to funnel our cars, school buses, delivery vans and long-haul trucks to countless destinations – all thanks to a small army of engineers, technicians, construction crews and maintenance trades. Design and project management duties often fall to engineers who enter the field with bachelor’s degrees. “There are so many different facets of engineering you can focus on,” says Bruce Duvall, an engineer and project manager for VDOT. Just within his area of expertise – civil engineering – you’ll find a number of subspecialties. “You can go into structural engineering,” he says, “and that would be someone who wants to design bridges and buildings. In that same civil engineering area you have people who spin off into traffic engineering analysis, where they look at traffic projections and historical patterns. There is also surveying.”

Civil engineers are also called on to design and optimize roads, canals and dams. “You can stay more on the design side or work in the field overseeing projects,” Duvall says, adding that serving the people who live in this region is an added bonus. “I get to have some input on their quality of life, how the roadways are built, designing safety standards, and there’s a little bit of a high with that,” he says. Learning a skilled trade or earning an associate’s degree will also open the door to this career field. “We absolutely hire people with an associate’s degree,” says Duvall. “A two-year degree in engineering or engineering technology will put you on the higher end of opportunities. We have what we call an engineering design technician, and they support our engineers, helping with design. You can do quite well in that position.” Tidewater Community College and local career training schools offer a number of engineeringrelated associate degree programs, along with programs in many of the construction trades. David Ekker, Dean of Engineering,

Mathematics, and Industrial Technologies at Tidewater Community College’s Virginia Beach campus, says the school is responding to a growing need for tech-savvy graduates. “As you add technology, the people who build and design and maintain and repair things are expected to have a higher level of education than they did in the past,” Ekker explains. “We’ve been trying to figure out a way of exposing more people to these opportunities. These are jobs that are right here in our area and they are high-paying jobs.” ■
