Home Is Where the Healthcare Is Careers in Home Health, Assisted Living and Long-Term Care As medical tech goes mobile and hospital stays grow shorter, a small army of healthcare workers has regrouped at the home front, whether in private residences or assisted living and long-term care facilities. Personal care aides, certified nurse assistants (CNAs), dietitians, respiratory therapists, nurses and administrators are just some of the medical professionals making house calls these days. Shifting care to homes or assisted living/long-term care settings is an excellent way to deliver high-quality help in patient-friendly ways while holding down costs. “This is becoming a significant part of healthcare,” notes Deborah Brand, the administrator at Cedar Manor, Chesapeake Regional Medical Center’s assisted living facility. Brand, who is also an RN, says part of the satisfaction of working in this sector of healthcare is the relationships you form with those you care for. “I worked in the ICU for 15 years – I was an adrenaline junkie,” she laughs. “I loved my job, but in a hospital, patients come and go and you never see their continuum of care. Here you have the opportunity to get to know people. “When we welcome a new staff member, whether it’s a CNA or an RN, they aren’t just coming in to do a job – we’re welcoming them to a family. They’re going to have a lot of grandmas and grandpas, and having those relationships is a lot of fun.” While staff members need the certifications required for their job, Brand says attitude is a must-have in this very personal style of healthcare. “I hire more for attitude than I do for skills,” she explains. “Most people can be taught a skill, but if you don’t have an affinity for caring for people, you’re not going to do well in this area.” Healthcare workers in assisted living or in-home settings typically enjoy a more relaxed atmosphere than you’ll find on a bustling hospital floor, says Brand. “Here you might notice a caregiver sitting down to talk to a resident or read a book to them,” she describes. “You have the time to do that here, which you don’t in other types of facilities. It’s extremely rewarding because you know you’re making such a difference in their lives.” Don Christian, president of Tidewater Home Care, agrees. “You tend to develop relationships with the families and you have the time to really
concentrate on your patient. For instance, a CNA might have 10 or 20 patients at hospital facility, and they’re constantly moving their entire shift. If you’re working private duty in home health, you only have one patient to look after, one meal to prepare, one bath to do. And the pay is comparable, maybe even better.” Christian entered the home health field when his father began to require extra care at home. “I was able to select the aides that worked with my father, and now that I run my own company, I’m very selective about who we train and who we send into patient homes because I think everyone should have the same good experience that my father had.” Christian places certified nurse assistants and personal care aides in homes, and also administers a personal care aide training program. “The personal care aide program is two weeks, either day or evening classes, and it’s a job that’s in high demand,” Christian says. “Once you get your state certification, you can work anywhere in Virginia.” Personal care aides provide companionship, meal preparation and light housekeeping. For people who need to go to work quickly, this is a good entry-level choice, Christian says. “We also see a lot of our personal care aides move into other positions like CNAs or LPNs or RNs,” he says. In fact, several of the RNs who train his students started their careers as personal care aides, so advancement opportunities are excellent. Another good option for students who need to enter the workforce quickly is the nine-week Care Partner course offered by Sentara College of Health Sciences. It covers all of the basics that a CNA needs to know, along with additional training in areas like phlebotomy and EKGs. So, if you’re interested in a healthcare career that offers time to develop ongoing relationships with your patients and plenty of room for growth, there’s no place like home.
