Skilled Tradespeople In Demand How much demand is there for skilled tradespeople? Let’s just say that employer welcome mats rarely get any larger. It’s a simple equation of supply and demand. “The skilled trades are actually 60 to 65 percent undermanned right now,” explains Dennis Brakeville, Tidewater Tech’s Director of Education. “Partially it’s because so many in the trades are getting ready to retire.” Beno Rubin, Director of TCC’s Regional Automotive Center, agrees. “The industry needs these technicians. With an aging workforce, you have so many who have left or are getting ready to leave and they’re taking all that knowledge with them. So employers are looking for a steady stream of up-andcoming highly-skilled replacements.” The result? “The trades are booming, booming, booming,” says Tony Davezan, Recruiting Manager for Ameri-Force, a marine, industrial and professional staffing agency. This is welcome news to many who are looking for alternatives to low paying jobs or stalled careers. “The need for skilled tradespeople has very quickly outpaced the supply of workers, so the money is very good,” notes Harlan Krepcik, HVAC Program Head at Tidewater Community College. Krepcik sits on the board of directors for several trade organizations where colleagues have their own way of classifying the trades – “They no longer refer to them as blue collar jobs; now they’re gold collar jobs,” says Krepcik. “The demand for workers is just that high.” William “Bill” Crow, President of the locallybased Virginia Ship Repair Association, agrees that skilled trades wages can be quite high. “There was a maritime administration study completed two years ago, and the average yearly income of shop-level and below workers across the ship repair and building industry was $73,000,” he says. “Now your 18-year-old is going to start out as 6 | CCEW
a helper in the shipyard, they’re not going to make workers in the area, you’re going to have to replace that $73,000 right away,” notes Crow. “But the about 16,000 to 18,000 of them in the next six other part of it is, when you talk about the industry years or so.” With that kind of need, why aren’t job seekers looking to the trades? “We, as a country, have gotten too wrapped around the idea that someone has to have a 4-year degree and we’ve lost focus on the trades and technical certifications,” says Crow. “We don’t grasp their significance and importance to our economy. “What we are attempting to do as an association is to partner with the local academic institutions, high schools and technical centers in the area and then to expand that across the state to implement measures that will allow us to raise awareness that ship repair is a very viable career that is upwardly mobile, with a good income and very, very good benefits.” Crow would also like to banish outdated notions about trade labor as and the shortages in staffing that we’re facing, I got dull, dreary work – instead, problem solvers and a call last year from someone asking how raising creative people are right at home. “You’ve got to the minimum wage would affect shipbuilding and have your basic science, technology and math, but repair, and I said it won’t. We are already paying these skilled tradespeople are also artists,” he says. well above minimum wage, even for a helper to “Welders are Picassos in their own way, they really come into our shipyards to do a fire watch or those are. They lay a bead that keeps water inside a pipe types of things.” or keeps a ship from sinking. It takes them time Tradespeople are expected to retain their to hone their skills, their talents, their abilities. It’s enviable “in demand” status and weighty paychecks not a rote memory skill.” for some time to come as skilled baby boomers The skilled trades cater to a wide variety of retire in waves over the next 15 years, impacting interests with hundreds of specialties to choose key elements of the local economy. In fact, the from, and welcome both males and females, manufacturing, trade, transportation and utility from new grads to career switchers looking for sectors – all skilled trade havens – claim almost alternatives to low paying jobs or stalled careers. a quarter of the total jobs in our region, according “We get a lot of people who have completed a to the Hampton Roads Economic Development 4-year degree and they still can’t find a good Alliance. That’s a lot of jobs that will need to be paying job,” says Brakeville. filled. So if you’re looking for interesting work that “The average age in the shipyard trades is pays well and offers long-term career stability, just roughly about 55,” says Crow. “So with 40,000 call the skilled trades the gold collar choice. ■

Manufacturing Trades There’s something of a manufacturing renaissance occurring in the United States right now, and the manufacturing trades are reaping the benefit. A USA Today report places the yearly pay of the average manufacturing worker at an eye-catching $77,505, including benefits. It’s a figure that surprises many people who picture rows of laborers toiling for minimum wage. And if your impression of a manufacturing job is a dreary grind in a hot, dirty plant, it’s time to revise that image as well. “Often when people think of the manufacturing trades, they revert back to the 70s steel mills with someone working in a blast furnace under hazardous work conditions,” describes Charlie Kane, President of locally-based Busch LLC, an industry leader in vacuum technology equipment and pump assembly. “That’s not what most of today’s industry and manufacturing positions are. For instance, we work on some pretty sophisticated manufacturing processes, very automated, with a lot of computer controls, and that work is done in a very clean, air-conditioned environment. “I’ve got people working in mechanic assembly, and in electrician and plumber roles, who are making much better money than people realize – better money than many people with four-year degrees,” he notes. You’ll find a large variety of skills represented in manufacturing. “CNC (computer numerically controlled) machine operator is one we’re always looking at, mechanical assembly people, electrical technicians, and we have warehouse positions,” lists Kane. Other manufacturing jobs include fabricators, machinists, quality controllers, maintenance techs, operations managers, controls engineers, machine operators and line supervisors. “People need to understand that manufacturing is still a great career opportunity,” says Kane. “The interesting thing is that the type of manufacturing that is left is increasingly more specialized. You’re doing something with ultrapure metal or ultra-pure chemicals, it’s ultra-fast or ultra-small, and the jobs are more skills-based. It’s a higher-end type of job today, and these are jobs that are actually growing.” Industry watchers have spotted what they call a “reshoring” or “insourcing” trend as U.S. companies move overseas jobs and operations back to the U.S. In Virginia alone, over 5,000 manufacturers are responsible for 200,000+ jobs, reports the Virginia Manufacturers Association. Community colleges and technical schools offer a variety of training programs in the manufacturing trades, such as Tidewater Community College’s innovative mechatronics program. Students study computer programming, hydraulics, pneumatics, motor controls, and programmable logic controllers, earning either an associate’s degree or a career studies certificate in the field. The manufacturing trades are a good fit for those who enjoy creating useful things or building something tangible, says Paul Zabicki, Operations Vice President for Craft Industrial, an industrial service center that does machining and rebuild work. “This is a rewarding field in the sense that you can leave at the end of a day and you’ve accomplished something that you can actually see. “There is opportunity in the trades and there is reward. If you’re willing to put forth an effort, there’s stability, long-term growth and prosperity for the taking. I can’t say it any more simply than this – it’s the American Dream as it used to be, and it’s here for you.” ■

Automotive Technicians For those with a knack for problem solving, welcome to the well-paying world of automotive techs. This rapidly evolving field has been heavily impacted by technology, from diagnostic software to common hand tools. “Even the wrenches are shaped differently – they’re made to fit your hand ergonomically so you don’t develop joint problems after 20 or so years of using them on the job,” says Mark Maund, Auto Program Coordinator at Tidewater Tech. Computerized diagnostic equipment has been in place awhile now, but even that is seeing significant upgrades. “It’s wireless,” says Maund. “We’ve got so many computer tools and pieces of equipment to attach to a car and you used to plug those wires into the dashboard. Now you can pick up that information on a computer in the shop with your scanning device while the car is outside.” Yes, students can still expect to spend handson time repairing engines, brakes and other auto systems – they’ll just bring high-tech tools and computer savvy to each job. If you enjoy working with your mind as much as your hands, this is the field to go into, says Maund. “They’re not auto mechanics anymore, they’re technicians,” adds Rubin Beno, Director of TCC’s Regional Automotive Center. “And the reason for that is the complexity of the vehicles they work on. Not only do they perform maintenance work, but they have to be able to diagnose and repair the vehicle, they have to make determinations, read a wiring diagram, follow a flow chart, and understand computer networking – it’s amazing the technology that goes into these vehicles.” To get started, technicians earn either an associate’s degree or diploma in automotive mechanics, which prepares them for the ASE certification exams, the industry standard. Tidewater Tech’s program takes 45 weeks to complete, and Maund regularly places graduates in local dealerships, independent repair shops and other workplaces, sometimes before they’ve even finished the program. “A lot of our students go on to become master techs while others are really interested in one or two particular areas, so they’ll focus on say engine 10 | CCEW
performance or electrical troubleshooting, get certified in those, and go on to have good careers as specialists.” Those with entrepreneurial leanings often open their own shops. “As long as you have the people skills and pick up some business knowledge so you’ll know how to handle things like the taxes and the benefits, you can definitely go into business for yourself,” says Maund. Females do as well as males, and the field attracts new high school grads as well as career switchers and military veterans. At TCC, Rubin sees students who already hold degrees taking seats next to those just starting college. “We have students with associate’s degrees, bachelor’s degrees, even a couple who have master’s degrees,” he says. “Some of them couldn’t find jobs, and some found work they didn’t like well enough to do for the rest of their lives. “We also have students who started out as traditional college freshmen but didn’t do well because they weren’t engaged; they come to us and become very successful doing something they genuinely like. It’s amazing how well people do when they find something they’re passionate about. This is a field for people who like to solve problems. It’s not the same routine over and over again; you might see one problem one day and the next you’ll see something completely different,” says Rubin. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, automotive techs earn a median hourly pay rate of $18.20; experienced technicians with formal automotive training and top-notch diagnostic and computer skills can command more than $63,000 a year. There can be other perks as well. Right now, HRT (Hampton Roads Transit) is offering skilled mechanics a $2,000 sign-on bonus, generous benefits and opportunities for advancement. “There is so much opportunity for any student who wants to work,” says Rubin. “Cars aren’t going away. They may evolve, but even with new technology, like cars that drive themselves, you still have to have people who can diagnose and repair them. This is a skill you can take anywhere.” Maund agrees – “If you go to school for auto mechanics, you will find work if you want it – and it will be a career, it won’t be a job.” ■

Maintenance Trades One of the hallmarks of a skilled trades career is exceptional opportunity for advancement. John McCarthy, Program Coordinator at Tidewater Tech, often tells his students to stop thinking in terms of limits. “The only limit is your imagination,” he says. “You can do anything in these trades that you need to do. “We have a building maintenance program here – every building needs somebody to take care of it. I have a friend who does that kind of work in commercial real estate and he’s making upwards of $70,000 a year doing a blue collar job. Young people have been brainwashed into thinking that you have to wear a suit and tie to work to be successful.” In addition to being sought after by private industry, maintenance tradespeople are also recruited by the communities they live in. For instance, HRSD (Hampton Roads Sanitation District) attracts those who like the idea of working for an organization that is committed to safeguarding the environment and providing services that residents depend on. “At HRSD, we hire everyone from plant operators and engineers all the way through instrumentation specialist, electricians, maintenance operators, heavy equipment operators, facility assistants and in my division we have interceptor technicians, pump station supervisors and conveyance system supervisors,” lists Chris Stephan, HRSD’s Chief of Interceptor Operations, North Shore. “A lot of people start at an assistant position
where they kind of get their feet wet and find out what we do, decide what they like,” describes Stephan. “The beautiful thing about HRSD is that you can work your way up the chain. It all depends on initiative, drive and capabilities.” If more training is required to make the job you want a good match, HRSD offers generous education benefits, including 4-year apprenticeship programs in eight different trades. “Upon graduation, you’d be a licensed journeyman in your trade,” Stephan says. Unlike a lot of other employment sectors, wastewater treatment and management is not a field that can be outsourced. “It’s not only job security and excellent benefits, but you also have the added benefit of a purpose in your job,” says Stephan. “You can go into a lot of jobs, and they’re good jobs, very honorable, but here we’re actively working to protect the environment.” Other good options in this job category include municipal, commercial and residential property maintenance. From public parks to office towers to schools, you’ll find grounds and janitorial maintenance crews mowing and cleaning. At factories, technicians lubricate and test huge mechanical systems. And along roadways, crews repair damaged asphalt and clear drainage ditches. Clearly, the roster of maintenance professionals is a diverse one. The Bureau of Labor Statistics expects the need for general maintenance and repair workers to increase by 6% through 2024. ■

Getting Started:
Education Opens Door To Skilled Trades Career It’s a message that’s being broadcast with growing concern from government leaders and employers alike – there simply aren’t enough people entering the skilled trades to meet the demand for these crucial workers. One reason for the labor crunch is a lingering perception that the only path that leads to a successful career is paved with a traditional 4-year degree. It’s a perception U.S. Secretary of Labor Thomas Perez would like to alter. During a CNBC interview, the secretary recounted frustrating conversations he’s had with parents: “When I say there is a bright future in America for people who want to work with their hands, they recoil and say my kid is going to go to college.” But savvy parents know that today’s skilled tradespeople enter a welcoming and well-paying workplace backed by an excellent education, whether it’s an associate’s degree program at a community college, coursework at a career training school or even a 4-year apprenticeship. “There’s a good reason for that,” says Dave Philpott, HVAC Program Coordinator at ATI (www.auto.edu). “With today’s technology, these fields have become so specialized that you have to have some type of advanced training just to do your job.” A generation ago, it was still possible to pick up a trade informally. “Today, these companies want you to come in with a foundational knowledge; they just don’t have the time to train anymore,” says Dennis Brakeville, Director of Education at Tidewater Tech (www.tidewatertechtrades.edu). A good training program doesn’t just gain you entrance to a trade, it also enhances your career opportunities, says Philpott. “When a supervisory position opens up, having that training on your resume is really attractive to an employer. It sets you up for a better future.” Fortunately, Hampton Roads offers a wealth of training options, from short certification courses to associate degree plans, including programs that

start in high school, like TCC’s dual enrollment partnership with the City of Portsmouth. “These are 11th and 12th graders who come and take courses and get credit for them,” says Ann Ambrose, TCC’s Dean of Business, Public Services and Technologies. “If after graduating from high school they decide they want to continue, they’re already ahead of the game.” Dual enrollment students can choose from fields like welding and automotive technology. Most schools offer both daytime and evening class schedules that accommodate full-time students as well as working adults. “Our students have many different needs and we try to work with them and get creative when we need to,” says Ambrose. For instance, one of TCC’s welding classes starts at midnight. Some career schools and community colleges offer short-term career studies programs that lead to certification and a quick entry into the workforce, like TCC’s full menu of courses. “This is basically a 20 to 25 credit certificate that is specific to an area like welding,” describes David Ekker, Dean of Engineering, Mathematics, and Industrial Technologies at TCC’s Virginia Beach campus. Students can build on this, if they desire, by earning an associate’s degree, and even transferring into a four-year bachelor’s degree program. In additional to local community colleges and technical schools, there are specialty schools like the Building Trades Academy (www. buildingtradesacademy.com), associated with the Tidewater Builders Association The academy trains disadvantaged students who are interested in the building maintenance trade at no cost to them, says Megan Hill,
Recruitment and Placement Coordinator. “But we recognize that it’s about being a resource to the community, so even if a student isn’t eligible for our program, we still want to be able to plug them into other opportunities and training resources like ours.” One example she points to is a Navy facilities apprenticeship. “Students go in to get trained in very specific areas like HVAC or high voltage electricity, and once they gain those hard skills they get certified as journeymen.” If you prefer steering wheels to welding torches and voltage meters, there’s the City of Norfolk’s CDL (commercial driver’s license) apprenticeship. Apprentices learn to pilot bulky refuse and recycling trucks around city streets in a six month program that will earn them the opportunity to take the commercial driver’s license exam. Job opportunities include positions with local municipal school systems and departments of public works, as well as transportation companies and trucking firms. Check out Norfolk.gov for class openings. A good resource to begin researching a career in the skilled trades is the Virginia Community College System’s online Wizard (www.vawizard.org), which offers a regional overview of available jobs, how much they pay and what type of training is necessary to work in that field. You can also visit career counselors and academic advisers at local schools for expert advice in matching your interests and career goals to the right skilled trade. ■

HVAC Technicians The perks of working in the HVAC field add up quickly: the technology is impressive, the pay is excellent and there are always jobs available. “The current statistics from the Department of Labor show that the demand for HVAC technicians outpaces all other trades, and that’s true in Virginia as well as in the United States and Canada,” says Harlan Krepcik, HVAC Program Head at Tidewater Community College. This need for more workers shows no sign of weakening any time soon. “The average age of an HVAC technician is 56, 57 years,” Krepcik says. “The number of people retiring far exceeds the number of people coming into the trade.” In fact, one of Krepcik’s colleagues recently mentioned that 700,000 HVAC pros were expected to retire in the next five years with only 150,000 anticipated replacements. “I think this included Canada too, but the number seemed staggering,” Krepcik says. “People in the trade take care of hospitals, high-rise
buildings, manufacturing plants – over 55 percent of the energy used in the United States is consumed by HVAC equipment.” That means HVAC techs can be found installing new energy-efficient residential units as well as performing critical repairs to a multimillion dollar piece of industrial equipment. “This field has changed significantly in the past 10 years because of advances in technology and our program has changed as well,” says Dave Philpott, HVAC Program Coordinator at ATI (Advanced Technology Institute). “We install HVAC units that communicate wirelessly, and work on smart home systems you access through an app on your phone now and give you a level of control that was never achievable before. You have to keep up with all of that or you’re going to be lost.” Adds Krepcik, “For HVAC, the body of technical knowledge doubles every two years – it’s actually a little under 1.8 years – and that technical capability that the industry has developed shows
up in the equipment. Very simply, you have to understand a lot more today than even 10 years ago.” HVAC work is hands-on, it’s high tech, and it offers the reward of meeting challenges, says TCC’s Ann Ambrose, Dean for Business, Public Services and Technologies. “We had a high school camp here last summer to expose girls to nontraditional industry jobs, and I had one girl tell me she was surprised to find so much science involved in HVAC – she was excited about it.” Several local career training schools and community colleges offer excellent HVAC diploma and associate degree programs. Many students are hired before they even graduate, says Philpott, and get a jumpstart on their careers while finishing school. Job security, great pay and the opportunity to work with increasingly high-tech equipment – all excellent reasons to consider a career in the HVAC field. ■

Construction Trades Skilled tradespeople in the construction industry are extremely adaptable to changing economic conditions, giving them an enviable resilience. In cyclical boom times, they can’t work enough hours to satisfy demand. During downturns, their talents make way for them in related sectors – homeowners still need to replace aging roofs, businesses have to maintain their heating and cooling systems, and manufacturers are dependent on miles of wiring to deliver uninterrupted power. Construction occupations run the gamut from helpers to drywall installers to site inspectors and most should see an increase in demand through 2024, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Jobs for solar photovoltaic installers, for example, should grow by 24% over the next eight years. Openings for brick masons, electricians, insulation workers, elevator installers, roofers, construction laborers and helpers, plumbers, and construction equipment operators are expected to increase by 10-15% through that same period. Pay rates are quite good. Electricians earn a median hourly wage of $24.57 per hour with top earners claiming an annual median income of over $85,000. Plumbers command a median $50,660 per year and brick masons a median $47,650 /yr. Structural iron workers make a median $48,200 a year. Entry-level laborers earn a median $30,190 /yr. with excellent growth opportunities. Experienced construction tradespeople who move into inspection positions make $56,040 a year. In commercial construction, elevator installers bring home a median $78,620. “This can be a springboard to some really
major opportunities that many people don’t even know exist,” says Megan Hill, Recruitment and Placement Coordinator at the locally-based Tidewater Building Trades Academy. Hill loves to see students who have been out of work or stuck in dead end jobs move into rewarding careers. “For many, it’s life changing,” she says. While years ago many people could pick up a construction trade informally, most require special training today, especially as technology impacts the field. “I would say that’s true for almost every one of the trades in the building industry, and that’s all the way from the folks who are digging footings and pouring concrete to the person who comes in and hooks up your audio/video wiring,” says Jeff Ainslie, President of Ainslie Group, a local building company. Training programs at high schools, local community colleges and technical schools cover many of these trades, including courses at the Tidewater Building Trades Academy, created by the Tidewater Builders Association to help students learn those trades in special demand locally. “Our graduates learn skills that will last them a lifetime and take them as far as they want to go,” says Hill. “There’s not a single building or home out there that doesn’t need some type of maintenance or care, whether it’s on a small scale or large, so these are jobs that really don’t ever expire.” To get started in the building trades, Ainslie recommends contacting the Tidewater Builders Association for more information or talking to a career counselor. ■

Truck Drivers As home to a bustling port and commercial hub, Hampton Roads sends a large number of trucks on their way every day. But as busy as our region is, we still account for only a small portion of the nearly three million trucks on the road today. With large numbers of older pros reaching retirement age, the need for drivers will only increase. . Rebecca Higginbotham, Program Coordinator for ATI’s commercial driving program, says the school can’t train drivers fast enough. “We have recruiters come in from different companies all the time and I’d say 90 percent of our students have job offers before they even graduate,” she says. “Overall, with the economy picking up, we’re facing a shortage of drivers right now.” To enter the industry, drivers must pass a Department of Transportation physical and earn a commercial driver’s license (CDL). Several local career schools and community colleges offer specialized training programs, including ATI’s eight-week program. “We have both morning and evening classes,” says Higginbotham, and age and gender is no barrier to entry. Regulated hours of service safeguard drivers from working to the point of sleepiness, satellite navigation is the norm, and over-the-road drivers bring all the comforts of home with them. This is also a career that accommodates a number of lifestyles and family needs – there are drivers who opt for cross-country hauls and those who prefer regional pick-up and delivery runs. “A lot of companies are moving to regional driving now, strategically pinpointing their work centers so that drivers stay in a 200-300 mile
radius, which gives them more time at home with their families,” says Matthew Woods, an instructor for Tidewater Community College’s truck driving program. For example, Reliable Tank Line/Quality Oil Company, which transports petroleum products to businesses throughout North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia and Tennessee, is hiring drivers for local runs out of their Chesapeake terminal, says Chris Arceneaux, a recruiter for the firm. “This is a family-owned company, so the job security is there,” he says. “And this is a job that if you work hard, that’s reflected in your paycheck.” Arceneaux says full-time company drivers typically earn $55,000 and above, with access to excellent benefits. “This is a position that’s not going to go away – it’s a career with a future,” he adds. Higginbotham agrees. “Drivers will always have a job,” she says. “We have some students who don’t want to do over-the-road driving and they go to work for HRT or the schools driving buses. And at HRT, you have the opportunity to start out in buses and move to light rail. I see nothing but growth in the future.” ■
Reliable Tank Line is now hiring
Local/Home Daily Drivers to haul petroleum products out of Chesapeake, VA. Complete benefits package with 401k and profit sharing! Must have a clean driving record, Class A CDL with hazmat & tanker endorsements and TWIC card. One year of verifiable Class A driving experience required.
