BLUE COLLAR GOES GOLD SKILLED TRADESPEOPLE IN DEMAND It’s a career field that’s in high demand, it pays very well, it can be entered without taking on massive college loan debt and there are plenty of openings right here in our own backyard. For new grads and career switchers alike, the skilled trades open the door to a wealth of opportunities. “The need for skilled tradespeople has very quickly outpaced the supply of workers, so the money is very good,” notes Harlan Krepcik, HVAC Program Head at Tidewater Community College. Krepcik sits on the board of directors for several trade organizations where colleagues have their own way of classifying the trades – “They no longer refer to them as blue collar jobs; now they’re gold collar jobs,” says Krepcik. “The demand for workers is just that high.” William “Bill” Crow, President of the locallybased Virginia Ship Repair Association, agrees that skilled trades wages can be quite high. “There was a maritime administration study completed two years ago, and the average yearly income of shop-level and below workers across the ship repair and building industry was $73,000,” he says. “Now your 18-year-old is going to start out as a helper in the shipyard, they’re not going to make that $73,000 right away,” notes Crow. “But the other part of it is, when you talk about the industry and the shortages in staffing that we’re facing, I got a call last year from someone asking how raising the minimum wage would affect shipbuilding and repair, and I said it won’t. We are already paying well above minimum wage, even for a helper to come into our shipyards to do a fire watch or those types of things.” Tradespeople are expected to retain their enviable “in demand” status and weighty paychecks for some time to come as skilled baby boomers retire in waves over the next 15 years, impacting key elements of the local economy. In fact, the manufacturing, trade, transportation and utility sectors – all skilled trade havens – claim almost a quarter of the total 6 | CCEW

jobs in our region, according to the Hampton Roads Economic Development Alliance. That’s a lot of jobs that will need to be filled. “The average age in the shipyard trades is roughly about 55,” says Crow. “So with 40,000 workers in the area, you’re going to have to replace about 16,000 to 18,000 of them in the next six years or so.” With that kind of need, why aren’t job seekers looking to the trades? “We, as a country, have gotten too wrapped around the idea that someone has to have a 4-year degree and we’ve lost focus on the trades and technical certifications,” says Crow. “We don’t grasp their significance and importance to our economy. “What we are attempting to do as an association

is to partner with the local academic institutions, high schools and technical centers in the area and then to expand that across the state to implement measures that will allow us to raise awareness that ship repair is a very viable career that is upwardly mobile, with a good income and very, very good benefits.” Crow would also like to banish outdated notions about trade labor as dull, dreary work – instead, problem solvers and creative people are right at home. “You’ve got to have your basic science, technology and math, but these skilled tradespeople are also artists,” he says. “Welders are Picassos in their own way, they really are. They lay a bead that keeps water inside a pipe or keeps a ship from sinking. It takes them time to hone their skills, their talents, their abilities. It’s not a rote memory skill.” The skilled trades cater to a wide variety of interests with hundreds of specialties to choose from, and welcome both males and females, from new grads to career switchers looking for alternatives to low paying jobs or stalled careers. “We get a lot of people who have completed a 4-year degree and they still can’t find a good paying job,” reports Dennis Brakeville, Tidewater Tech’s Director of Education. Beno Rubin, Director of TCC’s Regional Automotive Center, sees students who already hold degrees filling his classrooms as well. “We have students with associate’s degrees, bachelor’s degrees, even a couple who have master’s degrees. “Some of them couldn’t find jobs, and some found work they didn’t like well enough to do for the rest of their lives. We also have students who started out as traditional college freshmen but didn’t do well because they weren’t engaged; they come to us and become very successful doing something they genuinely like. It’s amazing how well people do when they find something they’re passionate about.” So if you’re looking for interesting work that pays well and offers long-term career stability, just call the skilled trades the gold collar choice. ■

Maintenance One of the hallmarks of a skilled trades career is exceptional opportunity for advancement. John McCarthy, Program Coordinator at Tidewater Tech, often tells his students to stop thinking in terms of limits. “The only limit is your imagination,” he says. “You can do anything in these trades that you need to do. “We have a building maintenance program here – every building needs somebody to take care of it. I have a friend who does that kind of work in commercial real estate and he’s making upwards of $70,000 a year doing a blue collar job. Young people have been brainwashed into thinking that you have to wear a suit and tie to work to be successful.” In addition to being sought after by private industry, maintenance tradespeople are also recruited by the communities they live in. For instance, HRSD (Hampton Roads Sanitation District) attracts those who like the idea of working for an organization that is committed to safeguarding the environment and providing services that residents depend on. “At HRSD, we hire everyone from plant operators and engineers all the way through instrumentation specialist, electricians, maintenance operators, heavy equipment operators, facility assistants and in my division we have interceptor technicians, pump station supervisors and conveyance system supervisors,” lists Chris Stephan, HRSD’s Chief of Interceptor Operations, North Shore. “A lot of people start at an assistant position where they kind of get their feet wet and find out what we do, decide what they like,” describes Stephan. “The beautiful thing about HRSD is that you can work your way up the chain. It all depends on initiative, drive and capabilities.” If more training is required to make the job you want a good match, HRSD offers generous education benefits, including 4-year apprenticeship programs in eight different trades. “Upon graduation, you’d be a licensed journeyman in your trade,” Stephan says. The Bureau of Labor Statistics expects the need for general maintenance and repair workers to increase by 9% through 2022. ■

The perks of working in the HVAC field add up quickly: the technology is impressive, the pay is excellent and there are always jobs available. “The current statistics from the Department of Labor show that the demand for HVAC technicians outpaces all other trades, and that’s true in Virginia as well as in the United States and Canada,” says Harlan Krepcik, HVAC Program Head at Tidewater Community College. This need for more workers shows no sign of weakening any time soon. “The average age of an HVAC technician is 56, 57 years,” Krepcik says. “The number of people retiring far exceeds the number of people coming into the trade.” In fact, one of Krepcik’s colleagues recently mentioned that 700,000 HVAC pros were expected to retire in the next five years with only 150,000 anticipated replacements. “I think this included Canada too, but the number seemed staggering,” Krepcik says. “It’s a huge gap in an enormous field. People in the trade take care of hospitals, high-rise buildings, manufacturing plants – over 55 percent of the energy used in the United States is consumed by HVAC equipment.” That means HVAC techs can be found installing new energy-efficient residential units as well as performing critical repairs to a multi-million dollar piece of industrial equipment. “This field has changed significantly in the past 10 years because of advances in technology and our program has changed as well,” says Dave Philpott, HVAC Program Coordinator at ATI (Advanced Technology Institute). “We install HVAC units that communicate wirelessly, and work on smart home systems you access through an app on your phone now and give you a level of control that was never achievable before. You have to keep up with all of that or you’re going to be lost.” Adds Krepcik, “For HVAC, the body of technical knowledge doubles every two years – it’s actually a little under 1.8 years – and that technical capability that the industry has developed shows up in the equipment. Everything is controlled with microprocessors, and logic is built into the control systems. Very simply, you have to understand a lot more today than even 10 years ago.” HVAC work is hands-on, it’s high tech, and it offers the reward of meeting challenges, says TCC’s Ann Ambrose, Dean for Business, Public Services and Technologies. “We had a high school camp here last summer to expose girls to non-traditional industry jobs, and I had one girl tell me she was surprised to find so much science involved in HVAC – she was excited about it.” Several local career training schools and community colleges offer excellent HVAC diploma and associate degree programs. Many students are hired before they even graduate, says Philpott, and get a jumpstart on their careers while finishing school. Job security, great pay and the opportunity to work with increasingly high-tech equipment – all excellent reasons to consider a career in the HVAC field. ■

Automotive Technicians How much has the field of automotive mechanics changed over just the past decade? “Even the wrenches are shaped differently – they’re made to fit your hand ergonomically so you don’t develop joint problems after 20 or so years of using them on the job,â€? says Mark Maund, the Auto Program Coordinator at Tidewater Tech. Computerized diagnostic equipment has been in place awhile now, but even that is seeing significant upgrades. “It’s wireless,â€? says Maund. “We’ve got so many computer tools and pieces of equipment to attach to a car and you used to plug those wires into the dashboard. Now you can pick up that information on a computer in the shop with your scanning device while the car is outside.â€? Yes, students can still expect to spend hands-on time repairing engines, brakes and other auto systems – they’ll just bring high-tech tools and computer savvy to each job. If you enjoy working with your mind as much as your hands, this is the field to go into, says Maund. To get started, technicians earn either an associate’s degree or diploma in automotive mechanics, which prepares them for the ASE certification exams, the industry standard. Tidewater Tech’s program takes 45 weeks to complete, and Maund regularly places graduates in local dealerships, independent repair shops and other workplaces, sometimes before they’ve even finished the program. “A lot of our students go on to become master techs while others are really interested in one or two particular areas, so they’ll focus on say engine performance or electrical troubleshooting, get certified in those, and go on to have good careers as specialists.â€? The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects a 9% growth rate in automotive mechanic and tech openings through 2022, with a median hourly pay rate of $17.60. Experienced mechanics with formal automotive training and top-notch diagnostic and computer skills can command more than $60,070 a year. There can be other perks as well. Right now, HRT (Hampton Roads Transit) is offering skilled mechanics a $2,000 sign-on bonus, generous benefits and opportunities for advancement. “If you go to school for auto mechanics, you will fi nd work if you want it – and it will be a career, it won’t be a job,â€? Maund says. â–

Truck Drivers As home to a bustling port and commercial hub, Hampton Roads sends a large number of trucks on their way every day. But as busy as our region is, we still account for only a small portion of the nearly three million trucks on the road today. With large numbers of older pros reaching retirement age, the need for drivers will only increase. The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects an 11% increase in the number of trucking jobs through 2022 and employers are scrambling to fi ll driver seats. Rebecca Higginbotham, Program Coordinator for ATI’s commercial driving program, says the school can’t train drivers fast enough. “We have recruiters come in from different companies all the time and I’d say 90 percent of our students have job offers before they even graduate,” she says. “Overall, with the economy picking up, we’re facing a shortage of drivers right now.” To enter the industry, drivers must pass a Department of Transportation physical and earn

a commercial driver’s license (CDL). Several local career schools and community colleges offer specialized training programs, including ATI’s eight-week program. “We have both morning and evening classes,” says Higginbotham, and age and gender is no barrier to entry. Regulated hours of service safeguard drivers from working to the point of sleepiness, satellite navigation is the norm, and over-the-road drivers bring all the comforts of home with them. This is also a career that accommodates a number of lifestyles and family needs – there are drivers who opt for cross-country hauls and those who prefer regional pick-up and delivery runs. “A lot of companies are moving to regional driving now, strategically pinpointing their work centers so that drivers stay in a 200-300 mile radius, which gives them more time at home with their families,” says Matthew Woods, an instructor for Tidewater Community College’s truck driving program. For example, Reliable Tank Line/Quality Oil

Company, which transports petroleum products to businesses throughout North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia and Tennessee, is hiring drivers for local runs out of their Chesapeake terminal, says Chris Arceneaux, a recruiter for the firm. “This is a family-owned company, so the job security is there,” he says. “And this is a job that if you work hard, that’s reflected in your paycheck.” Arceneaux says full-time company drivers typically earn $55,000 and above, with access to excellent benefits. “This is a position that’s not going to go away – it’s a career with a future,” he adds. Higginbotham agrees. “Drivers will always have a job,” she says. “We have some students who don’t want to do over-the-road driving and they go to work for HRT or the schools driving buses. And at HRT, you have the opportunity to start out in buses and move to light rail. I see nothing but growth in the future.” ■

The Tractor-Trailer Driving Certificate program is designed to prepare students to meet the needs of the highway cargo industry. The Classroom module prepares students for the written portion of the Commercial Drivers License (CDL) Examination.

If building a long-term career is at the top of your job-hunting list, then look no further than the building trades. Skilled tradespeople in this field are extremely adaptable to changing economic conditions, giving them an enviable resilience. In cyclical boom times, they can’t work enough hours to satisfy demand. During downturns, their talents make way for them in related sectors – homeowners still need to replace aging roofs, businesses have to maintain their heating and cooling systems, and manufacturers are dependent on miles of wiring to deliver uninterrupted power. “We’ve been very fortunate in this area,” says Mike Iacobellis, Director of the Tidewater Electrical Industry Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (JATC), and a licensed electrician. “Our contractors do an array of work – industrial, commercial, a lot of government work – so we were able to keep all of our apprentices employed as well as our journeymen during the downturn.” Construction occupations run the gamut from helpers to plumbers to site inspectors and most should see an increase in demand through 2022, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Jobs for brickmasons, for example, should grow by 34% through 2022. Openings for plumbers, painters, electricians, solar panel installers, carpenters and cement masons are expected to increase by 20-29% through that same period. Insulation installation jobs are projected to grow by 38%. Pay rates are quite good. Electricians earn a median hourly wage of $23.96 per hour with top earners claiming an annual median income of over $82,000. Plumbers command a median $49,149 per year and brickmasons a median $44,950/yr. Structural iron workers make a median $46,140 a year Entry-level laborers earn a median $29,160/yr. with excellent growth opportunities. Experienced construction tradespeople who move into inspection positions make $53,450 a year. In commercial construction, elevator installers bring home a median $79,650. While years ago many people could pick up a construction trade informally, most require special training today, especially as technology impacts the field. “I would say that’s true for almost every

one of the trades in the building industry, and that’s all the way from the folks who are digging footings and pouring concrete to the person who comes in and hooks up your audio/video wiring,” says Jeff Ainslie, President of Ainslie Group, a local building company. Part of that need for more specialized training rests with the increasingly sophisticated equipment you’ll find on a construction site. While the lumbering bulldozer may look old-school from the outside, inside, the machine has gone thoroughly high tech. “The heavy equipment they manufacture today requires a lot of technical expertise,” says Ainslie. “Instead of the bulldozers where you basically had two foot pedals and two sticks, Caterpillar has these devices that have a heads up display. They have gloves you put your hands into and based on what you do with your hands, the machine responds. It’s almost like digging with your hands – the machine mimics everything that you do.” Training programs at high schools, local community colleges and technical schools cover many of these trades. Another option is the Tidewater Building Academy, created by the Tidewater Builders Association to help students learn those trades in special demand locally. “One of the things we tell our students all the time is that college is a great option, but it’s not for everybody, and the building trades is a phenomenal career option,” says Erasto Beard, Staff Vice President at the academy. “You’ll find people who are very, very successful. We’ve got TBA members who never went to college and they have done extremely well.” “Our graduates learn skills that will last them a lifetime and take them as far as they want to go,” says Megan Hill, Recruitment and Placement Coordinator. “There’s not a single building or home out there that doesn’t need some type of maintenance or care, whether it’s on a small scale or large, so these are jobs that really don’t ever expire.” To get started in the building trades, Ainslie recommends contacting the Tidewater Builders Association for more information or talking to a career counselor. ■

Manufacturing There’s something of a manufacturing renaissance occurring in the United States right now, and the manufacturing trades are reaping the benefit. A USA Today report places the yearly pay of the average manufacturing worker at an eyecatching $77,505, including benefits. It’s a figure that surprises many people who picture rows of laborers toiling for minimum wage. And if your impression of a manufacturing job is a dreary grind in a hot, dirty plant, it’s time to revise that image as well. “Often when people think of the manufacturing trades, they revert back to the 70s steel mills with someone working in a blast furnace under hazardous work conditions,” describes Charlie Kane, President of locallybased Busch LLC, an industry leader in vacuum technology equipment and pump assembly. “That’s not what most of today’s industry and manufacturing positions are. For instance, we work on some pretty sophisticated manufacturing processes, very automated, with a lot of computer controls, and that work is done in a very clean, air-conditioned environment. “I’ve got people working in mechanic assembly, and in electrician and plumber roles, who are making much better money than people realize – better money than many people with four-year degrees,” he notes. You’ll find a large variety of skills represented in manufacturing. “CNC (computer numerically controlled) machine operator is one we’re always looking at, mechanical assembly people, electrical technicians, and we have warehouse positions,”

375,510 buyers and sellers meet here every week. Call 446-2700 to advertise.

lists Kane. Other manufacturing jobs include fabricators, machinists, quality controllers, maintenance techs, operations managers, controls engineers, machine operators and line supervisors. For those who are concerned about job security and the further eroding of our country’s manufacturing base, Kane points to a shift that has taken place in recent years. “People need to understand that manufacturing is still a great career opportunity. The interesting thing is that the type of manufacturing that is left is increasingly more specialized and more sophisticated. You’re doing something with ultrapure metal or ultra-pure chemicals, it’s ultra-fast or ultra-small, and the jobs are more skills-based. “It’s a higher-end type of job today, and these are jobs that are actually growing. So while some manufacturing has declined, our industry, and our company in particular, continues to expand.” Community colleges and technical schools offer a variety of training programs in the manufacturing trades, and some companies offer in-house training. Craft Industrial, an industrial service center that does machining and rebuild work, trains new hires who possess a mechanical aptitude, an attention to detail, and basic math and English skills. “We bring them into the machine shop and they pick up lots of different experiences and skills on the job, so they’re being paid to learn,” says Paul Zabicki, Operations Vice President. “As they progress, their salary goes up. It’s not tied to a certain amount of time on the job like a government pay scale. If you started at $10 v

an hour but you’re worth $20 an hour, you’ll get $20 an hour. I don’t know too many places where that happens. And once you have a job here and are good at what you do, your job is very secure because this is an underserved industry.” The manufacturing trades are a good fit for those who enjoy creating useful things or building something tangible, says Zabicki. “This is a rewarding field in the sense that you can leave at the end of a day and you’ve accomplished something that you can actually see. “There is opportunity in the trades and there is reward. If you’re willing to put forth an effort, there’s stability, long-term growth and prosperity for the taking. I can’t say it any more simply than this – it’s the American Dream as it used to be, and it’s here for you.” ■

The shipbuilding and ship repair industry supports over 60,000 jobs in Virginia and contributes over $5.5 billion to the state’s bottom line, but it’s not all smooth sailing right now. For skilled tradespeople who work in the marine sector, there are more well-paying jobs than qualified people to fi ll them and employers are scrambling to fi ll that gap. “Many of the people in the shipbuilding industry are beginning to hit retirement age and we don’t have nearly enough workers to replace them,” says Tony Davezan, Recruiting Manager for Ameri-Force, a marine, industrial and professional staffing agency. “And the shipbuilding field is flourishing right now,” he adds. “Things aren’t slowing down, they’re picking up. We’re extremely busy.” That means excellent employment opportunities for skilled shipyard workers. “Right now it’s a skilled trades market because there are so many needs in the industry,” Davezan says. “If you’re a first class shipfitter or pipefitter for instance, you can pick and choose where you want to go and what you want to do because it’s all about supply and demand. “Sheet metal mechanics are also in demand, and we certainly can’t find enough aluminum or TIG welders,” he says. “Painter/blasters can make a lot of money and marine electricians do very well. There’s such a shortage of workers going into these fields, in part because people don’t really know about these crafts, how important they are, and the opportunities they represent.” Once they master their craft, shipyard tradespeople can expect opportunities to advance and training resources that are second to none. For instance, much of the management at area shipyards came from the skilled trades. “And the money is very good,” says Davezan. So good, in fact, that many in the shipyard trades can afford to take lengthy blocks of time off, he says. “That happens all the time. Before Thanksgiving someone will take the rest of the year off and a week or two into the New Year. They’ve accumulated enough money that they can afford to have that extended time to rest, spend time with family, just enjoy themselves. “Without a doubt, what they do is an art and a skill,” Davezan says. “They make a very good living and the people we talk to on a daily basis love what they do. This can certainly be a very rewarding career. Our challenge right now is getting the word out to people.” ■

TRAINING FOR A TRADE It’s a message that’s being broadcast with growing concern from government leaders and employers alike – there simply aren’t enough people entering the skilled trades to meet the demand for these crucial workers. One reason for the labor crunch is a lingering perception that the only path that leads to a successful career is paved with a traditional 4-year degree. It’s a perception U.S. Secretary of Labor Thomas Perez

would like to alter. During a CNBC interview, the secretary recounted frustrating conversations he’s had with parents: “When I say there is a bright future in America for people who want to work with their hands, they recoil and say my kid is going to go to college.” But savvy parents know that today’s skilled tradespeople enter a welcoming and well-paying workplace backed by an excellent education, whether it’s an associate’s degree program at a community college, coursework at a career training school or even a 4-year apprenticeship. “There’s a good reason for that,” says Dave Philpott, HVAC Program Coordinator at ATI (www.

auto.edu). “With today’s technology, these fields have become so specialized that you have to have some type of advanced training just to do your job.” Harlan Krepcik, HVAC Program Head at Tidewater Community College (TCC.edu) agrees. “For HVAC, the body of technical knowledge doubles every two years – it’s actually a little under 1.8 years – and that technical capability that the industry has developed shows up in the equipment. Everything is controlled with microprocessors, and logic is built into the control systems. Very simply, you have to understand a lot more today than even 10 years ago.” A generation ago, it was still possible to pick up a trade informally. “Today, these companies want you to come in with a foundational knowledge; they just don’t have the time to train anymore,” says Dennis Brakeville, Director of Education at Tidewater Tech (www.tidewatertechtrades.edu). Fortunately, Hampton Roads offers a wealth of training options, from short certification courses to associate degree plans, including programs that start in high school, like TCC’s dual enrollment partnership with the City of Portsmouth. Most schools offer both daytime and evening class schedules that accommodate full-time students as well as working adults. “Our students have many different needs and we try to work with them and get creative when we need to,” says Ann Ambrose, TCC’s Dean of Business, Public Services and Technologies (TCC.edu). For instance, one of TCC’s welding classes starts at midnight. Many of the skilled trades options at career schools and community colleges take you through a shortterm career studies program that leads to certification and a quick entry into the workforce, like TCC’s full menu of offerings. “This is basically a 20 to 25 credit certificate that is specific to an area like welding,” describes David Ekker, Dean of Engineering,

Mathematics, and Industrial Technologies at TCC’s Virginia Beach campus. Students can build on this, if they desire, by earning an associate’s degree, and even transferring into a four-year bachelor’s degree program. In additional to local community colleges and technical schools, there are specialty schools like the Building Trades Academy (www. buildingtradesacademy.com), associated with the Tidewater Builders Association. A good resource to begin researching a career in the skilled trades is the Virginia Community College System’s online Wizard (www.vawizard.org), which offers a regional overview of available jobs, how much they pay and what type of training is necessary to work in that field. You can also visit career counselors and academic advisers at local schools for expert advice in matching your interests and career goals to the right skilled trade. ■

If you want a resume that opens doors everywhere, become a welder. “There are tons of opportunities for people who are coming into the field as older workers start to retire,â€? says John McCarthy, Welding Program coordinator at Tidewater Tech. “We see it every day as employers try to fi ll that gap, so we have partnerships with local companies who are working with us to try and bring some younger people into the field.â€? Shipyards, power plants, large construction sites, manufacturing – all of these sectors compete for skilled welders. “What we do here is train our students to weld in a 30-week course,â€? describes McCarthy. “After they complete the course they can go in at maybe two or three pay grades above the person who hasn’t had any training at all, especially places like Newport News Shipbuilding – we work with them all the time.â€? According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, top earners report an annual pay rate of over $56,130, while the median hourly wages are $17.45 per hour. Welding engineers command a median $84,000 a year and welders who are willing to travel and work under challenging conditions can earn well over $100,000 a year. Pay is directly related to skill level, a good reason to keep training current. Some welders move into supervisory or management positions while others branch into programming or operating robotic and other welding machines. Welders may find themselves in a variety of environmental conditions, from manning a workbench on the floor of a plant to perching atop a highrise to working underwater. Most welders work in manufacturing-related businesses, though in our region, shipyards and their subcontractors are one of the largest sources of jobs. This is a field that enthusiastically welcomes female workers. “In my career at Newport News Shipbuilding, females were some of the best welders I dealt with,â€? shares McCarthy. “We have about six female students in our program right now and they’re doing really well.â€? Career switchers are welcome as well. “We have a lot of military students,â€? McCarthy says, “and I had one guy graduate not too long ago who had a degree in psychology.â€? In demand and well paid – a welding career is hard to beat. â–
