Earn While You Learn

Registered Apprenticeship Expo Returns to Norfolk What’s better than learning a skilled trade that’s in-demand and pays well? Getting paid to learn through a registered apprenticeship. Over 70 local employers who offer apprenticeship programs invite you to join them October 1, 2014, at the Norfolk Scope Arena, for one of the country’s biggest apprenticeship expos. Apprentices are full-time employees (with benefits) who learn their trade through a combination of course work and hands-on training; most programs run four years. As your level of skill goes up, so does your paycheck, with another bump once you complete the program - the starting wage for apprenticeship graduates averages over $50,000 a year. The expo, which is free and open to the public, is co-sponsored by the City of Norfolk, the Virginia Department of Labor and Industry (DOLI), and the Virginia Tidewater Consortium for Higher Education (VTC). Employers will be looking for a broad range of apprentices in trades that include shipbuilding and ship repair, manufacturing, maintenance, plumbing, HVAC, sheet metal, iron workers, auto mechanics, electricians, bricklayers and others. Rick Brooks, an apprenticeship consultant with the state’s Department of Labor and Industry, says the annual expo helps meet a growing need. “I hear from employers that they desperately need apprentices because in the next five to 10 years there will be a lot of knowledge walking out the door as more people hit retirement age,” he says. “They recognize that they need to bring in young people and those that have an interest in learning a trade, and this expo is an opportunity for them to find those apprentices.” In an age of economic uncertainty, that’s welcome news to job hunters looking for longterm stability, a hefty paycheck and a rewarding career. ■ What: Registered Apprenticeship Expo featuring over 70 employers When: October 1, 2014, 3PM - 7:30PM Where: Norfolk Scope Arena Free and open to the public

Truck Drivers/Transportation Whether putting drivers on the road or placing logistics staff behind a desk, the transportation industry is creating truckloads of jobs. The sector is already one of the largest in the country, but by 2022 the Bureau of Labor Statistics expects the number of jobs to jump by 11% for tractor-trailer drivers and 22% for logisticians. Why the heavy need to fill more driver seats and bring more logisticians on board? “Everything we consumers buy is at some point transported by a tractor-trailer driver,” explains Sarah Biden, with Napa Transportation. “We will always need food in the stores.” Francis McComas, vice president of MCO Transport, agrees – “Take a look around the room that you’re sitting in and name one thing in the room that was not transported by truck at one point or another, whether it’s the handle on the door or the glass on the picture frames.” To enter the industry, drivers must pass a Department of Transportation physical and earn a commercial driver’s license (CDL). Several local career schools and community colleges offer specialized training programs that can be completed in as little as four weeks. The pay can be quite good, says Matthew Woods, an instructor for Tidewater Community College’s truck driving program. “Most of our students probably start off at about $36,000 a year, but a seasoned truck driver with maybe five years of experience will make anywhere from $50,000 to around $70,000,” Woods says. “And a lot of companies are moving to regional driving now, strategically pinpointing their work centers so that drivers stay in a 200-300 mile radius, which gives

them more time at home with their families.” Age and gender is no barrier to entry. “We have males and females and our students range in age from 21 to maybe 65,” Woods says. At Napa Transportation, Biden says she regularly sees female drivers. Truckers today can expect to drive wellappointed trucks that ride comfortably and are packed with job-easing technology. Some trucks are even equipped with automatic transmission and cruise control. It may be a global economy, but it’s the transportation companies, the logisticians and, ultimately, the truck drivers who keep that supply line functioning. “It’s an opportunity to provide a service essential to your community and to help keep the economy going,” says McComas. “And you get a chance to see the country and get paid while doing so,” adds Biden. “It’s a very independent job.” ■

Automotive Mechanics For those with a knack for problem solving, there’s a well-paying occupation that welcomes your talents – auto mechanics. This rapidly evolving field has been heavily impacted by technology, from diagnostic software to common hand tools. “Even the wrenches are shaped differently – they’re made to fit your hand ergonomically so you don’t develop joint problems after 20 or so years of using them on the job,” says Mark Maund, the auto program coordinator at Tidewater Tech. Computerized diagnostic equipment has been in place awhile now, but even that is seeing significant upgrades. “It’s wireless,” says Maund. “We’ve got so many computer tools and pieces of equipment to attach to a car and you used to plug those wires into the dashboard. Now you can pick up that information on a computer in the shop with your scanning device while the car is outside.” Yes, students can still expect to spend hands-on time repairing engines, brakes and other auto systems – they’ll just bring high-tech tools and computer savvy to each job. If you enjoy working with your mind as much as your hands, this is the field to go into, says Maund. To get started, technicians earn either an associate’s degree or diploma in automotive mechanics, which prepares them for the ASE certification exams, the industry standard. Tidewater Tech’s program takes 45 weeks to complete, and Maund regularly places graduates in local dealerships and independent repair shops, sometimes before they’ve even finished the program. “If you go to school for auto mechanics, you will find work if you want it – and it will be a career, it won’t be a job,” Maund says. “A lot of our students go on to become master techs while others are really interested in one or two particular areas, so they’ll focus on say engine performance or electrical troubleshooting, get certified in those, and go on to have good careers as specialists.” Those with entrepreneurial leanings often open their own shops. “As long as you have the people skills and pick up some business knowledge so you’ll know how to handle things like the taxes and the benefits, you can definitely go into business for yourself,” says Maund. The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects a 9% growth rate in automotive mechanic and tech openings through 2022, with a median hourly pay rate of $17.60. Experienced mechanics with formal automotive training and topnotch diagnostic and computer skills can command more than $60,000 a year. ■

Construction Trades Skilled tradespeople in the construction industry are extremely adaptable to changing economic conditions, giving them an enviable resilience. In cyclical boom times, they can’t work enough hours to satisfy demand. During downturns, their talents make way for them in related sectors – homeowners still need to replace aging roofs, businesses have to maintain their heating and cooling systems, and manufacturers are dependent on miles of wiring to deliver uninterrupted power. “We’ve been very fortunate in this area,” says Mike Iacobellis, a licensed electrician and director of the Tidewater Electrical Industry Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee ( JATC). “Our contractors do an array of work – industrial, commercial, a lot of government work – so we were able to keep all of our apprentices employed as well as our journeymen during the downturn.” Construction occupations run the gamut from helpers to plumbers to site inspectors and most should see an increase in demand through 2022, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Jobs for brickmasons, for example, should grow by 34% through 2022. Openings for plumbers, painters, electricians, solar panel installers, carpenters and cement masons are expected to increase by 2029% through that same period. Insulation installation jobs are projected to grow by 38%. Pay rates are quite good. Electricians earn a median hourly wage of $23.96 per hour with top earners claiming an annual median income of over $83,000. Plumbers command a median $49,149 per year and brickmasons a median $44,950/yr. Structural iron workers make a median $46,140 a year Entrylevel laborers earn a median $29,160/yr. with excellent growth opportunities. Experienced construction tradespeople who move into inspection positions make $53,450 a year. In commercial construction, elevator installers bring home a median $79,650. Training programs at high schools, local community colleges and technical schools cover many of these trades. Another option is the Tidewater Building Academy, created by the Tidewater Builders Association to help students learn those trades in special demand locally. For those who are interested in earning while they learn, paid apprenticeships are hard to beat. You’ll find many of the construction trades represented at the Registered Apprenticeship Expo on October 1, 2014, from 3pm to 7:30pm at the Norfolk Scope Arena. The event is free and open to the public. ■

Norfolk The City of Norfolk’s Department of Utilities, a regional water purveyor and municipal wastewater collection service provider, is seeking highly-motivated and skilled professionals for a variety of jobs. Current career opportunities include: Backhoe Operators Commercial Truck Drivers Maintenance Technicians Pump and Meter Mechanics Skilled Laborers Construction Inspectors Repair & Maintenance Crew Leaders

Skilled Professionals and Military Veterans are encouraged to apply. For complete position descriptions and to apply, go to: www.Norfolk.gov/jobs

Maintenance Trades The roster of maintenance trades professionals is a diverse one and the Bureau of Labor Statistics expects the need for general maintenance and repair workers to increase by 9% through 2022. Workers are not only in demand by private industry but are also recruited by the communities they live in. For instance, HRSD (Hampton Roads Sanitation District) attracts those who like the idea of working for an organization that is committed to safeguarding the environment and providing services that residents depend on. “We hire everyone from facility assistants all the way through instrumentation specialists, electricians, maintenance operators, heavy equipment operators, and in my division we have interceptor technicians, pump station supervisors and conveyance system supervisors,” lists Chris Stephan, HRSD’s Chief of Interceptor Operations, North Shore. “A lot of people start at an entry-level assistant position where they kind of get their feet wet and find out what we do, decide what they like,” says Stephan. “The beautiful thing about HRSD is that you can work your way up the chain.” If more training is required to make the job you want a good match, HRSD offers generous education benefits, including 4-year apprenticeship programs in eight different trades. “Upon graduation, you’d be a licensed journeyman in your trade,” Stephan says. ■

Shipbuilding & Ship Repair Just call Hampton Roads shipyard central. With our high concentration of working ports and naval bases, the area is a natural host for shipbuilders and ship repair firms. For skilled tradespeople who work in the marine sector, there are more well-paying jobs than qualified people to fill them. “Many of the people in the shipbuilding industry are beginning to hit retirement age and we don’t have nearly enough workers to replace them,” says Tony Davezan, a recruiting manager for Ameri-Force, a marine, industrial and professional staffing agency. “And the shipbuilding field is flourishing right now,” he adds. “Things aren’t slowing down, they’re picking up. We’re extremely busy.” That means excellent employment opportunities for skilled shipyard workers. “Right now it’s a skilled trades market because there are so many needs in the industry,” Davezan says. “If you’re a first class shipfitter or pipefitter for instance, you can pick and choose where you want to go and

what you want to do because it’s all about supply and demand.” There’s enough variety in the shipbuilding and ship repair trades to appeal to a wide range of interests, says Davezan, including electricians, welders, inside and outside machinists, shipfitters, insulators, painters, pipefitters and riggers. Once they learn their craft, skilled tradespeople can expect opportunities to advance and training resources that are second to none. And for those who want to work in the Gulf Coast region or the West Coast, these jobs are highly portable. “We even staff people in Hawaii,” notes Davezan. The paychecks can be very good as well. “If you have a skilled trade, you can easily make $50,000 to $150,000 a year,” reports Paul Rodriguez, president of NSC Technologies, a firm that places tradespeople in U.S. Navy shipyards from here to San Diego and Pearl Harbor. “This can certainly be a very rewarding career,” Davezan says. “Our challenge right now is getting the word out to people.” ■

Manufacturing “Often when people think of the manufacturing trades, they revert back to the 70s steel mills with someone working in a blast furnace under hazardous work conditions,” describes Charlie Kane, president of locally-based Busch LLC, an industry leader in vacuum technology equipment and pump assembly. “But that’s not what most of today’s industry and manufacturing positions are.” Instead of a dreary grind in a hot, dirty plant, think rewarding jobs in climate-controlled environments, says Kane. “For instance, we work on some pretty sophisticated manufacturing processes, very automated, with a lot of computer controls, and that work is done in a very clean, airconditioned environment. “The other side of it is understanding how far these careers can take you. I’ve got people working in mechanic assembly, and in electrician and plumber roles, who are making much better money than people realize – better money than many people with four-year degrees. You can start off in one of these trades and rather than putting yourself in debt going to school, you’re making money initially as you learn your craft.” There is a wide range of jobs in the manufacturing trades. “CNC (computer numerically controlled) machine operator is one we’re always looking at, mechanical assembly people, electrical technicians, and we have warehouse positions,” lists Kane. Other manufacturing jobs include fabricators, machinists, quality controllers, maintenance techs, operations managers, controls engineers, machine operators and line supervisors. Right now, these are jobs that are in demand.

“There’s a kind of a gap in the workforce,” explains Kane. “Many of the people in the skilled trades are more than halfway through their careers and there are not enough new people going into the trades to replace them. That’s why we’re working with the community colleges and others to look at how we can create training programs to develop these skillsets and encourage people to go into them. “And the interesting thing is that the type of manufacturing done here is increasingly more specialized and more sophisticated. You’re doing something with ultra-pure metal or ultra-pure chemicals, it’s ultra-fast or ultra-small, and the jobs are more skills-based. It’s a higher-end type of job today, and for someone with artistic skills, there are lots of ways they can use that skillset. “These are jobs that are actually growing. Unfortunately, I don’t think there is an awareness today of the type of work being done on the manufacturing side, especially for skilled tradespeople. If people investigate, they’ll find that the compensation levels, the work conditions, the career opportunities are all there,” says Kane. ■

HVAC There may be employment sectors where downsizing is still a threat, but the HVAC field is not one of them. “The current statistics from the Department of Labor show that the demand for HVAC technicians outpaces all other trades, and that’s true in Virginia as well as in the United States and Canada,” says Harlan Krepcik, HVAC program head at Tidewater Community College. If you’ve mastered the HVAC trade, you’re reliable and you want a job, expect to see a lot of welcome mats just about anywhere you turn. “It’s an enormous field,” says Krepcik. “People in the trade take care of hospitals, highrise buildings, manufacturing plants – over 55 percent of the energy used in the United States is consumed by HVAC equipment.” The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects job growth gains of 21% through 2022, which they characterize as higher than average for the occupations they track. Current median pay is $42,530, though that amount can increase significantly. “Our very first HVAC graduate several years ago went to work at the Hilton Hotel and he started at $27 an hour – I wanted to take his job,” laughs Dennis Brakeville, director of education and an HVAC expert at Tidewater Tech. Mark Flanagan, ODU’s mechanical/electrical superintendent, agrees that the pay can be excellent for experienced workers with top notch skills. “There are some HVAC technicians that are making close to $100,000 a year,” he says. “You have to go to school to learn your trade and then gain some experience, but once you’ve got that, some of these larger companies are willing to pay you well so they don’t lose you to other businesses.” So if the idea of an in-demand job with generous pay appeals to you, the HVAC trade should go to the top of your career list. ■
