Opportunity, Rewarding Work & Great Pay Students and career switchers today are frequently pointed toward a traditional 4-year bachelor’s degree, the growing healthcare field, or into a computer-related career. By narrowing their focus on these three popular choices, they leave an excellent career opportunity on the table – the skilled trades. Not only is the pay very good, but many skilled tradespeople are able to enter their field backed by a months-long certification or training program or an associate’s degree rather than having to spend four or more years in college. “A conventional inside machinist here with five to ten years of experience can easily make $50,000 to $65,000 a year, and that’s with a high school education,” says Paul Zabicki, operations vice president at Craft Industrial, an industrial service center that does machining and rebuild work. “You would be amazed at what some of our students earn with an associate’s degree,” adds David Ekker, dean of engineering, mathematics, and industrial technologies at Tidewater Community College’s Virginia Beach campus. “They can start in the $50,000s. An electrician tech, for instance, can earn that much working for a power company with an associate’s degree. Right now if you’ve got
technical skills, you can get a good-paying job.” In an age of continuing economic insecurity and troubling unemployment numbers, tradespeople find their skills in high demand. The largest single employer in Hampton Roads, for instance, is shipbuilding and ship repair giant Newport News Shipbuilding. And the Hampton Roads Economic Development Alliance notes that the manufacturing, trade, transportation and utility sectors claim almost a quarter (24.7%) of the total jobs in our region. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, a sampling of some well-paying skilled trades occupations include plumbers, who bring in a median income of $46,660 a year, structural iron and steel workers at $44,540/yr., electricians – $48,250/yr., construction and building inspectors – $52,360/yr., brickmasons – $45,410/yr., aviation mechanics – $53,220/yr., electronics installers – $49,170/yr., line installers and repairers – $54,290/ yr., and millwrights – $48,360/yr. “There is opportunity in the trades and there is reward,” says Zabicki. “If you’re willing to put forth an effort, there’s stability, long-term growth and prosperity for the taking. I can’t say it any more simply than this – it’s the American Dream as it used to be, and it’s here for you.”
Painters Skilled painters are at home atop bridges, encased in automobile spray booths, on construction sites, in industrial plants, at shipyards and marinas, and in small craft workshops to name just a few worksites that employ these critical tradespeople. Some painters learn their trade informally on the job, but specialty painters usually go through a registered three or four-year apprenticeship or a formal training program designed by their employer. For instance, automotive repair painters can take courses at a technical training school, and the National Association of Corrosion Engineers offers several certifications for industrial painters that can be earned in as little as one week up to several weeks depending on the program. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) projects job openings for painters working in
construction or maintenance to grow at a rate of 18% through 2020, adding an expected 72,100 new jobs. Part of that growth, notes the BLS, will be fueled by the need to prevent corrosion and deterioration to aging industrial structures, along with the need to replace retiring workers. Experienced painters often take advantage of excellent opportunities to establish their own businesses – about 53% of painters are selfemployed. Painters can expect a median pay of $34,280 per year, with transportation equipment painters bringing home a median $39,040 per year, says the BLS. Top earners make over $58,480 a year and automotive painters who work for dealerships and independent repair shops will sometimes earn commissions in additional to their wages. ■

Construction Builders are posting some of their best numbers since 2008 as the long-awaited housing recovery shows much-welcomed signs of strength. That means that construction tradespeople can expect their already busy work lives to get even busier. When building jobs contracted ontracted several years ago, the construction trades simply moved on to ancillary tasks: ks: remodeling homes, replacing aging roofs, wiring high tech offices, repairing roads and performing erforming specialty industrial work. As a whole, the building trades are able to move from one work sphere to another as market conditions ns shift, giving them an enviable resilience. ence. Construction occupations ions run the gamut from helpers to plumbers to site inspectors and nd the Bureau of Labor Statistics ics projects that most will see an n increase in demand through 2020. Jobs for brickmasons, for example, should grow by 40% through 2020. Openings for plumbers, painters, electricians, drywall ll installers, carpenters, cement ment masons and construction equipment operators are expected to increase by 23-34% through that same period. Construction inspector jobs are projected to grow by 18%. Pay rates are enviable. Electricians earn a median hourly wage of $23.20 per hour with top earners claiming an annual median income of over $80,890. Plumbers command a median $46,660 per year and brickmasons a median $45,410/yr. While years ago many people could pick
up a construction trade informally, most require special training today. “I would say that’s true for almost every one of the trades in the building industry, and that’s all the way from the folks who are digging footings and pouring concrete to the person who comes in and hooks up your audio/ video wiring,” says Jeff Ainslie, president of local building company. Ainslie Group, a loc Right now, the construction industry is being impacted by an aging workforce. “We have a generational skipping,” explains generat Ainslie. “Years ago many of these skilled trades were ttaught through practical experience and a then later on through trade schools scho or apprenticeships, but most of those have gone by the wayside.” wayside To help counter that T trend, the Tidewater Builders Association created A the Building Trades t Academy, where students A llearn trades that are in demand locally, such as d carpentry, HVAC, electrical ca and plumbing. Other options include ttraining programs at local community colleges and technical schools that cover many of the construction trades, and area builders and subcontractors are often open to apprentices and interns. “If someone is interested in any of the building trades, they can contact the Tidewater Builders Association (757-420-2566) for more information or talk to their guidance counselor,” advises Ainslie. ■

Truck Driving/Transportation Whether putting drivers on the road or placing logistics staff behind a desk, the transportation industry is definitely creating jobs. The sector is already one of the largest in the country, but by 2020 the Bureau of Labor Statistics expects the number of jobs to jump by 13% for delivery truck drivers, 21% for tractortrailer drivers, and 26% for logisticians. The explanation for the increased need is a simple one. “Everything goes by truck,” points out Francis McComas, vice president of MCO Transport, a trucking, warehousing and logistics company that maintains a local presence. “Take a look around the room that you’re sitting in and name one thing in the room that was not transported by truck at one point or another, whether it’s the handle on the door or the glass on the picture frames.” To enter the industry, drivers must pass a Department of Transportation physical and earn a commercial driver’s license (CDL). Several local career schools and community colleges offer specialized training programs that can be completed in as little as four weeks. The pay can be quite good. “The national average, according to the American Trucking Association, is $36,000-$42,000 for first year earnings, and students that
come out of our program tend to push the mid40s their first year,” says Sean Martin, Director of Operations for Truck Driver Training/4CDL. com, the company contracted to teach driving at many of the community colleges in Virginia, including Thomas Nelson on the peninsula. Females do just as well as males, and Martin has trained students from age 18 on up. “I think my oldest student was 78,” he says, “and the last I heard he was still driving. There is no demographic in trucking – anyone can learn to drive a truck. It’s a fair playing field for anybody that has an interest in it.” Truckers today can expect to drive wellappointed trucks that ride comfortably and are packed with job-easing technology. Some trucks are even equipped with an automatic transmission and cruise control. It may be a global economy, but it’s the transportation companies, the logisticians and, ultimately, the truck drivers who keep that supply line functioning. “It’s an opportunity to provide a service essential to your community and to help keep the economy going,” says McComas. ■

Maintenance Anything a skilled tradesperson operates – factory machinery, marine equipment, industrial motors – requires another skilled tradesperson to repair and maintain. Make that a small army of skilled tradespeople, and it’s becoming harder and harder to find them. “We’re having to reach out all over the place to find the people we need,” says Levon Strickland, the business development manager at Excel Apparatus Services, an industrial and marine equipment repair center located in North Charleston, S.C. They work with everyone from shipbuilding firms and steel mills to universities and hotels, says Strickland, and their work is critical to the smooth operations of these companies. Part of the problem in attracting young people and career switchers to the maintenance trades is that many of them harbor outdated images of mind-numbing, assembly line-style work. Instead, the field caters to creative problem solvers. “This is a rewarding field in the sense that you can leave at the end of a day and you’ve accomplished something that you can actually see,” says Paul Zabicki, operations vice president at Craft Industrial, an industrial service center that does machining and rebuild work. “We’re a custom shop where we do a lot of reverse engineering and design, so we hire machinists, industrial mechanics, we have welders/fitters – I’m talking about people who can take raw materials in their most basic form and make them into something,” Zabicki says. “These are true craftspeople.” Strickland, who hires manual machinists, mechanics, people with an industrial electrical or electronics background, and other positions, is actively involved in introducing trades careers to young people. “There are a lot of trades out here that pay extremely well, probably more than some of the other jobs they keep promoting in high school, and the benefits are excellent,” he says. He especially likes to get the message out to those who think their career options are limited – “The truth is they can make $40,000, $50,000, $60,000 in one of the trades jobs that they don’t even know are available.” The opportunities for advancement are excellent – “The manager of my shop right now started out as a shop mechanic,” Strickland notes. And because the jobs are in demand and difficult to outsource, job security is enviable. The Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates a healthy job growth rate in the maintenance trades of 19% through 2020. ■

HVAC Technician The perks of working in the HVAC field add up quickly: the technology is impressive, the pay is good and there are always jobs available. “It’s been a constant challenge to find skilled HVAC technicians, and it’s especially a challenge for a company that has aggressive growth plans like we do,” says John Redding, general manager of Miller Oil. Redding traces the problem, in part, to a young generation of workers who were rarely exposed to the benefits of a skilled trades career. “The need for a college education became the sole mantra of every child growing up, and with that you had fewer kids going into the HVAC trade,” he explains. “One of the biggest challenges in this industry is helping young people understand that this is a great opportunity for a great life.” Not only does the field pay well – “Senior technicians are probably in the mid-$20s to lower $30s an hour,” estimates Redding – but the jobs are stable. “In Hampton Roads the housing stock is aging, providing a lot HVAC work as systems need to be maintained and replaced over time,” he says. The Bureau of Labor Statistics confirms the ongoing need for skilled HVAC techs, projecting a job growth rate of 34% through 2020, which they characterize as much higher than average for the occupations they track. As HVAC systems have become more sophisticated and green-oriented, the job has become increasingly high-tech as well. “What we’re seeing is the major equipment manufacturers going to that high level of computer integration with smart systems and home management setups,” describes Redding. “It’s going to be as much about electronic diagnosis as anything.” It’s a perfect fit for the Wii generation who are as comfortable using their smartphones to control temperature settings as they are wielding a game controller. So if the idea of an in-demand job, generous pay and the opportunity to work with high-tech equipment appeals to you, the HVAC trade should go to the top of your career list. ■

Shipbuilding & Ship Repair For the sheer number of skilled trades jobs available, for the regional economic impact, for the diversity of occupations represented, in Hampton Roads, shipbuilding is king. With our high concentration of working ports and naval bases, the area is a natural host for shipbuilders and ship repair firms, from large organizations that employ tens of thousands of workers, to smaller businesses and subcontractors that may hire a few workers or several hundred. For skilled tradespeople who work in the marine sector, there are more well-paying jobs than qualified people to fill them. “The shipbuilding field is flourishing right now,” confirms Tony Davezan, a recruiting manager for Ameri-Force, a marine, industrial and professional staffing agency. “Things aren’t slowing down, they’re picking up.” An issue of concern that keeps shipyard recruiters busy is trying to find enough skilled tradespeople to fill their openings. “You hear about these young people who get out of college and there’s actually not enough jobs for them,” says Karen Baird, a recruiter for Oceaneering, a full-service ship repair company. “But if you go into the trades, especially here locally, you have all the shipyards looking for people. There are just so many avenues into this field. And we’re all pulling from the same pool of workers because there are only so many of them. We’ve even had to advertise outside the area as well to find workers. I would say going into the trades is one of the best things that you can do.” There’s enough variety in the shipbuilding/ship repair trades to appeal to a wide range of interests, including pipefitters, structural welders, MIG welders, TIG welders, outside machinists, inside machinists, painters, electricians, carpenters, shipfitters, riggers and electronics techs to name a handful. And once they learn their craft, skilled tradespeople can expect opportunities to advance and training resources that are second to none. For instance, much of the management at area shipyards came from the skilled trades. Paul Rodriguez, president of NSC Technologies, a firm that places tradespeople in U.S. Navy shipyards from here to San Diego and Pearl Harbor, adds that the paychecks can be very good. “If you have a skilled trade, you can easily make $50,000 to $150,000 a year,” he reports. “I have almost a thousand people on my payroll and I’m signing these checks for steel fabricators who are clearing $3,000 and that’s on a weekly basis. Some of them work six months, then take six months off to spend time with their family.” So, for a rewarding career, one that promises longevity, opportunities for growth and excellent pay – all aboard. ■

Water & Wastewater Plant Technicians In addition to being sought after by private industry, local tradespeople are also recruited by the communities they live in. For instance, HRSD (Hampton Roads Sanitation District) attracts those who like the idea of working for an organization that is committed to safeguarding the environment and providing services that residents depend on. The diversity of skilled trade positions at HRSD appeals to a wide variety of interests. “We hire everyone from facility assistants all the way through instrumentation specialists, electricians, maintenance operators, heavy equipment operators, and in my division we have interceptor technicians, pump station supervisors and conveyance system supervisors,” lists Chris Stephan, HRSD’s Chief of Interceptor Operations, North Shore. “A lot of people start at an entry-level assistant position where they kind of get their feet wet and find out what we do, decide what they like. The beautiful thing about HRSD is that you can work your way up the chain.” Pay rates are good, with merit increases and a state retirement plan. And unlike a lot of other employment sectors, wastewater treatment and
done all the educational requirements and the onthe-job training, they come away with a journeyman’s card. The biggest two programs are for treatment plant operators and interceptor technicians.” In addition to their apprenticeship program, HRSD offers generous educational benefits, including college tuition. “I’ve worked at a lot of different places and HRSD I think is by far and away the most employee oriented,” Stephan says. “But it’s not only job security and excellent benefits – you also have the added benefit of a purpose in your job,” he notes. “You can go into a lot of jobs, and they’re good jobs, very honorable, but here we’re actively working to protect the environment.” According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, water and wastewater treatment plant and system operators earn an annual median pay of $40,770 per year, and should see an increase of 12% in the number of job openings by 2020. Industrial “We offer an apprenticeship program in machinery mechanics and maintenance workers several different trades,” confirms Stephan. “It’s should see an increased need of 19% through 2020 a four-year program licensed through the state of and their median pay is $44,160/yr. Specialty Virginia, and at the end of the program after they’ve workers and supervisors command higher wages. ■ management is not a field that can be outsourced. “It’s a great choice for job security because it’s one of those things people can’t do without,” Stephan points out. As the first of the baby boomers hit retirement age, with an even larger number waiting to exit behind them, HRSD has created several apprenticeship programs to replace crucial skills.
