Where Am I Going? Interviewonomy
rriving at the correct location at the correct time for your interview is a critical step in the job acquisition process. Scrambling around trying to find your way in an unfamiliar part of town or strange city is not what you want to be doing just before an important job interview.
A
• Identify an alternate route to the interview in the event there is an unexpected detour.
Here are some pointers that will help you arrive on time and eliminate stress:
• If you will be flying in for an interview, be sure you have enough time after the interview to get to the airport and catch your flight home. Be sure and give yourself plenty of time at the end of the interview to negotiate the job offer so as not to feel rushed – and accepting a lesser salary!
• Make sure you understand the time and location of the interview. Have a point of contact, with phone number, at the interview location, in case you get lost or delayed. • Make sure you have reliable transportation to the interview. • Review your route of travel. • If you will be using public transportation, make sure you have adequate fare and know which route you will use. • If you will be driving, plan out your route and do a practice run a day or two before the interview, if you can. • Identify where you will park and have funds available for the meter.
4 | CCEW
• Have backup transportation available (friend or family) in the event your primary mode is unavailable. A dead battery or flat tire can really mess things up.
• Make sure your phone or GPS device are charged and ready to go. • Make sure your vehicle is clean and presentable. You never know when an interviewer may see what you are driving. So, plan ahead and make allowances for contingencies and you will arrive at the interview cool, calm and collected and ready to ace your next job interview! ■ Content provided by Scott Kee, a local interview coach. TCC’s Apprenticeship Institute -
a Gateway to Opportunity and Earning Power In today’s workplace, one of the quickest routes to a well-paying job is to learn a skilled trade through a certification or degree program. Need to enter the workplace even sooner? In an apprenticeship, you start with the job first and master your trade through a combination of classroom instruction and on-the-job training – essentially learning as you earn. “For those who want to begin their careers right away and reap the rewards immediately, an apprenticeship is a great option,” says Todd Estes, director of the Apprenticeship Institute at Tidewater Community College (TCC). “The vast majority of the employers we work with cover the instruction costs entirely,” he says. Rather than accumulating school loan debt, apprentices enjoy a regular paycheck along with benefits like health insurance, paid vacation and an excellent retirement plan. What’s the pay like? “In the skilled trades, your starting pay as an apprentice is a very decent wage, maybe $12 or $15 an hour,” Estes says. For Virginia apprentices who complete their program, the average starting salary is $50,000. TCC partners with regional employers to offer the classroom portion of a wide variety of apprenticeship programs; they also keep tabs on apprenticeship opportunities in the area. “We offer recruitment and information sharing through our existing networks,” confirms Estes. “When we have a partner we’re working with, whether it’s Norfolk Naval Shipyard, Newport News Shipbuilding, Stihl, Inc. or IMS Gear, as they have openings, we promote them through our own channels,” including TCC’s website and social media accounts. “We have a fairly public storefront when it comes to apprenticeships.”
6 | CCEW
You’ll find a good overview of these apprenticeship programs, including links to local employers with openings, at www.tcc.edu/abouttcc/apprenticeship-institute. You can also call TCC’s Apprenticeship Institute directly at 757822-1784. “We get lots of calls every day from folks seeking those opportunities,” says Estes. High schools commonly offered robust vocational and technical education programs through the 1970s for students interested in a skilled trades career. “But there was a shift, certainly in the 80s and 90s, where we did a very good job nationally of promoting college as the primary pathway to success,” Estes says. “I think the pendulum swung too far away from apprenticeships and these occupationallyspecific programs; they took a backseat in the conversation.” Now he’s seeing apprenticeships and technical training programs once again become part of the public dialog. In fact, Virginia is one of the states in the vanguard of this reassessment – the commonwealth has the largest number of active apprenticeships in the nation and is second only to California in the number of people currently enrolled in state-registered apprenticeships (https://doleta.gov/oa/data_statistics.cfm). “There’s been a concerted effort in the policy arenas to focus on these opportunities, more than there were five, 10, even 15 years ago,” says Estes. Why? “The realization that these are very viable pathways to lifelong career success,” he says. “It can be very lucrative if you want to talk about the financials.” TCC also caters to students who prefer to study for a skilled trade independently, then choose an employer after they graduate. “We have quite a few technical and occupationally-
oriented programs,” says Estes – some that can be completed in as little as three weeks all the way through two-year associate degree programs. “We have a great HVAC program, an academic welding program, residential wiring and electrical, and cybersecurity offerings,” he lists. Other popular programs include courses for the maritime and transportation trades, advanced manufacturing and mechatronics, electronics and engineering, and the construction trades. “So if you are interested in a particular field, you can come and register directly for those classes,” Estes says. One of their newest programs is a threeweek welding course they run in partnership with the Virginia Ship Repair Association (www. virginiashiprepair.org). “That’s a really cool one,” says Estes. “It’s 120 hours total and it’s set up like a regular workday, 7:30am to 3:30pm with a half hour for lunch. We focus on a couple of entry-level competencies and at the end of the three weeks, they actually get to test for their AWS (American Welding Society) certification. Right now Newport News Shipbuilding is the primary employer using that program – we have an over 80 percent placement rate.” The innovative program, along with one of the graduates, was recently recognized by Governor McAuliffe. For more information on the program, call 757-822-1234. “We’ll make sure you get the information you need,” says Estes. “Whether you’re a young person or a career switcher, there are a lot of fantastic opportunities out there and it is worth your time to see what’s available. We encourage people to take a look at our website and give us a call – we’re happy to talk with anyone.” ■

Construction Trades If building a long-term career is at the top of your job-hunting list, then look no further than the construction trades. Skilled tradespeople in this field are extremely adaptable to changing economic conditions, giving them an enviable resilience. In cyclical boom times, they can’t work enough hours to satisfy demand. During downturns, their talents make way for them in related sectors – homeowners still need to replace aging roofs, businesses have to maintain their heating and cooling systems, and manufacturers are dependent on miles of wiring to deliver uninterrupted power. While years ago many people could pick up a construction trade informally, most require special training today, especially as technology impacts the field. Training programs at high schools, local community colleges and technical schools cover many of these trades. Construction occupations run the gamut from helpers to drywall installers to site inspectors and most should see an increase in
demand through 2024, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Jobs for solar photovoltaic installers, for example, should grow by 24% over the next eight years. Openings for brick masons, electricians, insulation workers, elevator installers, roofers, construction laborers and helpers, plumbers, and construction equipment operators are expected to increase by 10-15% through that same period. Pay rates are quite good. Electricians earn a median hourly wage of $24.57 per hour with top earners claiming an annual median income of over $85,000. Plumbers command a median $50,660 per year and brick masons a median $47,650 /yr. Experienced construction tradespeople who move into inspection positions make $56,040 a year. The diversity of trades that make up this industry guarantees you’ll find a great fit for your personal interests and goals, and the ongoing need for construction tradespeople means you’ll find steady demand for your skills. ■

HVAC Technicians HVAC techs today are as likely to be called on to perform critical repairs to a multi-million dollar piece of industrial equipment as they are to coax a cranky residential air conditioner into cool submission. “This field has changed significantly in the past 10 years because of advances in technology,” says Dave Philpott, the HVAC program coordinator at ATI (Advanced Technology Institute). “We install HVAC units that communicate wirelessly, and work on smart home systems you access through an app on your phone now; it gives you a level of control that was never achievable before. You have to keep up with all of that or you’re going to be lost.” Harlan Krepcik, the HVAC program head at Tidewater Community College, agrees. “For HVAC, the body of technical knowledge doubles every two years – it’s actually a little under 1.8 years – and that technical capability that the industry has developed shows up in the equipment. Very simply, you have to understand a lot more today than even 10 years ago.” HVAC techs are not only technologically savvy – they can also lay claim to most wanted status. The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects a job growth rate of 14% through 2024, which it characterizes as much faster than average. “That’s true in Virginia as well as in the United States and Canada,” says Krepcik. “The average age of an HVAC technician is 56, 57 years. The number of people retiring far exceeds the number of people coming into the trade.” In fact, one of Krepcik’s colleagues recently mentioned that 700,000 HVAC pros were expected to retire in the next five years. “I think this included Canada too, but the number seemed staggering,” Krepcik says. Because of the growing demand for skilled HVAC technicians, workers are able to choose from a wide variety of worksites. “People in the trade take care of hospitals, high-rise buildings, manufacturing plants – over 55 percent of the energy used in the United States is consumed by HVAC equipment,” Krepcik says. “Our students go to work for both large and small HVAC companies, HVAC supply houses, even the shipyards,” lists Philpott. “With HVAC, there are so many different opportunities open to you. You can do installation in homes, or if you like computers you can build the automated systems used at places like universities. It’s a field where you can start your own business once you’ve been working for a while. Then there’s the refrigeration side, which is so important to hospitals and grocery stores. “Everybody has a need for heating and air conditioning,” says Philpott. “These jobs aren’t going away.” ATI offers an 11-month diploma program and a 15-month associate of occupational studies degree. Many students are hired before they even graduate, says Philpott, and get a jumpstart on their careers while finishing school. “You don’t need a background in HVAC; we’ll take you from the beginning and teach you everything you need to give you a foundation for a great future.” Job security, great pay and the opportunity to work with increasingly high-tech equipment – all excellent reasons to consider a career in the HVAC field. ■

Anything a skilled tradesperson builds – a highway, a power plant, an apartment building – requires another skilled tradesperson to maintain. Make that a small army of skilled tradespeople. From public parks to office towers to schools, you’ll find grounds and janitorial maintenance crews mowing and cleaning. Along roadways, crews repair damaged asphalt and clear drainage ditches. In apartment complexes, maintenance staff keep air conditioners humming and residential units in good repair. Clearly, the roster of maintenance trades professionals is a diverse one. In addition to being sought after by private industry, maintenance tradespeople are also recruited by the communities they live in. For instance, HRSD (Hampton Roads Sanitation District) attracts those who like the idea of working for an organization that is committed to safeguarding the environment and providing services that residents depend on. “At HRSD, we hire everyone from plant operators and engineers all the way through instrumentation specialist, electricians, maintenance operators, heavy equipment operators, facility assistants and in my division we have interceptor technicians, pump station supervisors and conveyance system supervisors,” lists Chris Stephan, chief of interceptor operations with HRSD. “A lot of people start at an assistant position where they kind of get their feet wet and find out what we do, decide what they like,” describes Stephan. “The beautiful thing about HRSD is that you can work your way up the chain. It all depends on initiative, drive and capabilities.” If more training is required to make the job you want a good match, HRSD offers generous education benefits, including 4-year apprenticeship programs in eight different trades. “Upon graduation, you’d be a licensed journeyman in your trade,” Stephan says. Unlike a lot of other employment sectors, wastewater treatment and management is not a field that can be outsourced. “It’s not only job security and excellent benefits, but you also have the added benefit of a purpose in your job,” says Stephan. “You can go into a lot of jobs, and
they’re good jobs, very honorable, but here we’re actively working to protect the environment.” One of the hallmarks of a skilled trades career is exceptional opportunity for advancement. John McCarthy, a program coordinator at Tidewater Tech, often tells his students to stop thinking in terms of limits. “The only limit is your imagination,” he says. “You can do anything in these trades that you need to do. “We have a building maintenance program here – every building needs somebody to take care of it. I have a friend who does that kind of work in commercial real estate and he’s making upwards of $70,000 a year doing a blue collar job. Young people have been brainwashed into thinking that you have to wear a suit and tie to work to be successful.” The Building Trades Academy, created by the Tidewater Builders Association, also has a building maintenance program. “Our program started in 1978 with seed funds from the federal government to train students who are economically disadvantaged at no cost to them,” says Erasto Beard, staff vice president at the academy. The three-month building maintenance program covers carpentry, plumbing, HVAC, electrical wiring and other skills. Graduates are finding jobs with a variety of employers. “These are very good jobs, most of them salaried with benefits, and there’s a career ladder,” Beard says. “One student may go to work for a remodeler and another student can come out of the same class and be hired by an apartment community or even a builder.” Students attend either morning or afternoon classes each weekday, with plenty of hands-on training. “The application is on our website (www.buildingtradesacademy.com),” says Beard. “Our graduates learn skills that will last them a lifetime and take them as far as they want to go,” says Megan Hill, recruitment and placement coordinator. “This can be a springboard to some really major opportunities that many people don’t even know exist,” says Hill, who loves to see students who have been out of work or stuck in dead end jobs move into rewarding careers. “For many, it’s life changing.” ■

High-rise construction projects, suburban home developments, manufacturing plants, shipyards and businesses – it’s electricians who bring these all of these sites humming to life. From designing wiring layouts and doing the install to troubleshooting problems and handling repair work, the market for skilled electricians doesn’t have an off switch. “We’ve been very fortunate in this area,” says Mike Iacobellis, a licensed electrician and director of the Tidewater Electrical Industry Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee ( JATC). “Our contractors do an array of work – industrial, commercial, a lot of government work.” Electricians can expect to remain in demand, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, which projects a job growth increase in this field of 14% through 2024. That translates to almost 86,000 new positions for electricians – if employers can find them. The National Electrical Contractors Association says that for every 7,000 electricians who join the field each year, 10,000 retire. Along with plenty of job openings, electricians can expect good pay – the Bureau places the current median wage at $52,720 a year, with the top 10 percent earning more than $90,420/yr. In Virginia, electricians must be licensed and there are several pathways into the trade. Community colleges, along with career and technical schools, offer excellent programs that lead to the required state license. Tidewater Community College offers a number of options, including a short-term career certification program in electrical wiring all the way up to a two-year associate’s degree program in electronics. “You would be amazed at what some of our students earn with an associate’s degree,” says David Ekker, dean of engineering, mathematics, and industrial technologies at Tidewater Community College’s Virginia Beach campus. “They can start in the $50,000s.” Other electricians acquire their skills in a four or five-year apprenticeship program like the one Iacobellis oversees. One of the advantages of the apprenticeship option is that you earn a paycheck while you learn. “It’s paid on-the-job training, and one of the nice things about our program, since it’s union sponsored, is that apprentices actually receive health insurance and retirement benefits that are all paid for by the contractor who is employing them,” lists Iacobellis. “By the time they go into the second year of the program, they receive a total of three pensions that are paid for automatically. “We get a lot of applicants right out of high school, but we also get people who want to switch careers; we have apprentices from age 18 to 50 coming in and doing well in the program. It’s open to everybody who is looking for a career and once you graduate from the program there’s always opportunity there. You can be your own boss, you can become an estimator, a project manager, a foreman – there’s no limit to what you can do in this trade,” he says. Applications are accepted year round, but the classroom portion of the apprenticeship starts each September. You’ll find an application form at www. ibew80.com, or for more information you can call Iacobellis at 757-480-2812. If you’re looking for a way to light up your career, becoming an electrician is an exceptional choice. ■ CCEW | 11

Truck Drivers How important is trucking to the national economy? “If you look at all the freight tonnage that moves around the country, trucks haul nearly 70 percent of it,” says Bob Costello, chief economic advisor for ATA (American Trucking Associations). “What we always say is that if you bought it, it was on a truck at some point.” And that’s a problem. “We’re short about 48,000 drivers,” Costello says. The upside? “Wages, especially in some of the longer haul segments where the shortage is most acute, have been going up aggressively,” he says. Finding a field where your skills are in demand is a welcome change for many who move into trucking from less secure jobs. Rebecca Higginbotham, a program coordinator for ATI’s commercial driving program (www.auto.edu), says the school can’t train drivers fast enough to meet demand. “We have recruiters come in from different companies all the time and I’d say 90 percent of our students have job offers before they even graduate,” she says. ATI driving students take either morning or evening classes; once they’ve completed the eight-week program, they’re ready for VDOT’s commercial driver’s license exam. Whether her students slide into the drivers’ seats of tractor-trailers, local delivery trucks, buses or heavy commercial vehicles, Higginbotham says their career prospects are all the same – “They’ll always have a job. I see nothing but growth for drivers in the future.” ■

Shipbuilding and Ship Repair When you look at regional economic impact, diversity of occupations, and the sheer number of skilled trades jobs available, in Hampton Roads, shipbuilding is king. With our high concentration of working ports and naval bases, the area is a natural host for shipbuilders and ship repair firms, from large organizations that employ tens of thousands of workers, to smaller businesses and subcontractors that may hire a few workers or several hundred. For skilled tradespeople who work in the marine sector, there are more wellpaying jobs than qualified people to fill them – and employers are scrambling to fill the gap. Compounding the problem is the steady drain of retiring workers as baby boomers leave the workforce. “The average age in the shipyard trades is roughly about 55,” says William “Bill” Crow, president of the locally-based Virginia Ship Repair Association. “So with 40,000 workers in the area, you’re going to have to replace about 16,000 to 18,000 of them in the next six years or so.” Not only are the jobs in demand, but the paychecks can be quite high, says Crow. “There was a maritime administration study completed two years ago, and the average yearly income of shop-level and below workers across the ship repair and building industry was $73,000,” he says. “Now your 18-year-old is going to start out as a helper in the shipyard, they’re not going to make that $73,000 right away,” notes Crow. “But the other part of it is, when you talk about the industry and the shortages in staffing that we’re facing, I got a call last year from someone asking how raising the minimum wage would affect shipbuilding and repair, and I said it won’t. We are already paying well above minimum wage, even for a helper to come into our shipyards to do a fire watch or those types of things.” Advancement opportunities are excellent – much of the leadership at local shipyards came up through the trades and workers are routinely promoted from within to supervisory positions.
So with those kind of wages and promotion options, why aren’t job seekers looking to the shipbuilding and repair trades? “We, as a country, have gotten too wrapped around the idea that someone has to have a 4-year degree and we’ve lost focus on the trades and technical certifications,” says Crow. “We don’t grasp their significance and importance to our economy.” In Virginia, for instance, the shipbuilding and ship repair industry supports over 60,000 jobs and contributes over $5.5 billion to the state’s bottom line. In Hampton Roads alone, the sector is one of the largest jobs producers. “What we are attempting to do as an association is to partner with the local academic institutions, high schools and technical centers in the area and then to expand that across the state to implement measures that will allow us to raise awareness that ship repair is a very viable career that is upwardly mobile, with a good income and very, very good benefits.” Crow would also like to banish outdated notions about trade labor as dull, dreary work – instead, problem solvers and creative people are right at home. “You’ve got to have your basic science, technology and math, but these skilled tradespeople are also artists,” he says. “Welders are Picassos in their own way, they really are. They lay a bead that keeps water inside a pipe or keeps a ship from sinking. It takes them time to hone their skills, their talents, their abilities. It’s not a rote memory skill.” The industry is home to a wide variety of trades that suit a diversity of interests, including shipfitters who cut and position metal on a ship; electricians; carpenters; inside machinists who manufacture precise metal parts; laggers who install insulation; pipefitters; electronics technicians; outside machinists who install valves, gears and other types of equipment; welders; riggers who use chain falls and cranes to move heavy loads such as a 900-ton section of ship; quality control inspectors and a host of other specialties. If you’re looking for great pay, generous benefits and rewarding work, it’s smooth sailing with the shipbuilding trades. ■

One day the transporter of Star Trek lore may become a reality, but until then we live in a to-and-fro economy, dependent upon miles and miles of roadways and bridges to funnel our cars, school buses, delivery vans and long-haul trucks to countless destinations – all thanks to a cohort of engineers, technicians and construction crews. Design and project management duties often fall to engineers who enter the field with a bachelor’s degree. “There are so many different facets of engineering you can focus on,” says Bruce Duvall, an engineer and project manager for VDOT. Just within his area of expertise – civil engineering – you’ll find a number of subspecialties. “You can go into structural engineering,” Duval says, “and that would be someone who wants to design bridges and buildings. In that same civil engineering area you have people who spin off into traffic engineering analysis, where they look at traffic projections and historical patterns. There is also surveying.” Civil engineers are also called on to design and optimize roads, canals and dams. “You can stay more on the design side or work in the field overseeing projects,” says Duvall, adding that serving the people who live in this region is an added bonus. “I get to have some input on their quality of life, how the roadways are built, designing safety standards, and there’s a little bit of a high with that,” he says. An associate’s degree will also open the door to a lot of well-paying engineering careers. “We absolutely hire people with an associate’s degree,” says Duvall. “A two-year degree in engineering or engineering technology will put you on the higher end of opportunities. We have what we call an engineering design technician, and they support our engineers, helping with design. You can do quite well in that position.” Tidewater Community College and local career training schools offer a number of engineering-related associate degree programs, and employers are rolling out the welcome mats for graduates. David Ekker, the dean of engineering, mathematics, and industrial technologies at Tidewater Community College’s Virginia Beach campus, says the school is responding to a growing need for tech-savvy graduates. “As you add technology, the people who build and design and maintain and repair things are expected to have a higher level of education than they did in the past,” he explains. “You would be amazed at what some of our students earn with an associate’s degree,” says Ekker. “They can start in the $50,000s. An electrician tech, for instance, can earn that much working for a power company with an associate’s degree. There are people with master’s degrees in history who don’t start at $50,000. And that’s nothing against a history degree. But right now if you’ve got technical skills, you can get a goodpaying job. “We’ve been trying to figure out a way of exposing more people to these opportunities,” says Ekker. “These are jobs that are right here in our area and they are high-paying jobs.” ■

and become very successful doing something they genuinely like. It’s amazing how well people do when they find something they’re passionate about.” The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects a 5% growth rate in automotive mechanic and tech openings through 2024, with a median hourly pay rate of $18.20. Experienced mechanics with formal automotive training and top-notch diagnostic and computer skills can command more than $63,000 a year. There can be other perks as well. Right now, HRT (Hampton Roads Transit) is offering skilled mechanics a $2,000 sign-on bonus, generous benefits and opportunities for advancement. “There is so much opportunity for any student who wants to work,” says Rubin. “Cars aren’t going away. They may evolve, but even with new technology, like cars that drive themselves, you still have to have people who can diagnose and repair them. This is a skill you can take anywhere.” ■

read a wiring diagram, follow a flow chart, and understand computer networking – it’s amazing the technology that goes into these vehicles. This is a field for people who like to solve problems.” If you enjoy working with your mind as much as your hands, this is the field to go into, says Maund. To get started, technicians earn either an associate’s degree or diploma in automotive mechanics, which prepares them for the ASE certification exams, the industry standard. At TCC, Rubin sees students who already hold degrees taking seats next to new high school grads. “We have students with associate’s degrees, bachelor’s degrees, even a couple who have master’s degrees,” he says. “Some of them couldn’t find jobs, and some found work they didn’t like well enough to do for the rest of their lives. “We also have students who started out as traditional college freshmen but didn’t do well because they weren’t engaged; they come to us

How much has the field of automotive mechanics changed over just the past decade? “Even the wrenches are shaped differently – they’re made to fit your hand ergonomically so you don’t develop joint problems after 20 or so years of using them on the job,” says Mark Maund, the auto program coordinator at Tidewater Tech. Other tools of the trade include wireless scanning devices, computerized diagnosis equipment, and microchipped replacement parts. Yes, students can still expect to spend hands-on time repairing engines, brakes and other auto systems – they’ll just bring high-tech tools and computer savvy to each job. “They’re not auto mechanics anymore, they’re technicians,” says Rubin Beno, director of TCC’s Regional Automotive Center. “And the reason for that is the complexity of the vehicles they work on. Not only do they perform maintenance work, but they have to be able to diagnose and repair the vehicle, they have to make determinations,
