Trading Up to a Shipshape Career
Shipbuilding and ship repair tradespeople in demand
It’s an industry that employs over 60,000 Virginians and pumps $6 billion into the state’s economy every year – and it’s totally dependent on the skilled trades to keep it afloat. In the world of shipbuilding and ship repair, tradespeople are not only in high demand, they are also highly valued. Bill Crow, president of locallybased Virginia Ship Repair Association, places workers’ average annual income at $81,531; excellent benefits are a given. Tradespeople in this sector can also expect plenty of opportunity for growth and advancement. In fact, much of the senior leadership at regional shipbuilding and ship repair yards came up through the trades and workers are routinely promoted from within to supervisory positions. So what do tradespeople in this industry do? Everything from welding to running electrical wire says Dawn Angrisani, human resources manager at BAE Systems Norfolk Ship Repair. The 103-acre site employs ship fitters, inside and outside machinists, welders, riggers, painters, insulators, pipefitters, boilermakers, electricians, 4 | CCEW
carpenters, and even blacksmiths. This diversity of trades means most people are able to find a specialty that matches their individual interests and skills. Angrisani recommends that people who are interested in the shipyard trades start by researching the field at sites like the Virginia Ship Repair Association (www. virginiashiprepair.org). “They offer a lot of education that allows people to get a really good feel for what to expect in the industry,” she says. Community colleges and career schools offer guidance as well. “Also, I don’t think I’m going out on a limb here by saying if you were to contact any of the local shipyards’ recruiting or human resources departments just to ask how to get started, we will gladly take the time to talk to you. We are interested in seeing people who want that opportunity and we want to help you get there.” One proven pathway for inexperienced workers who want to get a foot in the door is to apply for an entry-level helper or laborer position at one of the local shipyards, says Angrisani. “If you go to our website (https://jobs.
baesystems.com) you’ll see we have several positions currently open,” she notes. Another option is to enter a shipyard trade program at a career/technical school or Tidewater Community College, Angrisani says. “I know several employers who work very closely with Tidewater Community College’s pre-hire program – they are literally making offers to these students before they come out of the program,” she says. “Taking that step into a pre-hire program or getting some sort of certification on your own or going to that vo-tech school shows a level of initiative, desire and drive that tells an employer you want it and that’s a huge deal coming in.” For those who choose this field, the benefits add up quickly, not least of which is the satisfaction of contributing something important, especially at yards like BAE Systems Norfolk Ship Repair that work to keep U.S. Navy vessels safe while at sea. “One of the things we like to say is that we protect those who protect us,” says Angrisani. “The people who work here really get the fact that the greater part of what they do is supporting the sailors who serve us every day.”

Shift your career into high gear How important is trucking to the national economy? “If you look at all the freight tonnage that moves around the country, trucks haul nearly 70 percent of it,” says Bob Costello, chief economic advisor for ATA (American Trucking Associations). “What we always say is that if you bought it, it was on a truck at some point.” And that’s a problem, says Costello, because there’s currently a shortage of drivers – which means plenty of available jobs. “And wages, especially in some of the longer haul segments where the shortage is most acute, have been going up aggressively and will continue to go up aggressively,” says Costello, who places the median pay for drivers at about $55,000 a year. “And that’s only the start of it because you’re also going to get health insurance, you’re going to get a 401(k), you’re going to get paid time off and you’re going to get life insurance. I always tell drivers if you’re not getting that stuff, you need to find another company to work for, it’s out there. And by the way, this is for a non-union job.” To enter the field, drivers typically take a course that preps them for the CDL (commercial driver’s license) exam.
For students who take out a school loan to pay for the program, Costello has good news. “Once you get that commercial driver’s license and go to work for a trucking company, most of them will pay about $200 a month until that loan is paid off,” he says. Finding a field where your skills are in demand is a welcome change for many who move into trucking from less secure jobs. Rebecca Higginbotham, a program coordinator for ATI’s commercial driving program (www.auto.edu), says the school can’t train drivers fast enough to meet demand. “We have recruiters come in from different companies all the time and I’d say 90 percent of our students have job offers before they even graduate,” she says. ATI driving students take either morning or evening classes; once they’ve completed the eight-week program, they’re ready for VDOT’s commercial driver’s license exam. Whether her students slide into the drivers’ seats of tractor-trailers, local delivery trucks, buses or heavy commercial vehicles, Higginbotham says their career prospects are all the same – “They’ll always have a job. I see nothing but growth for drivers in the future.” CCEW | 5

Workers in the maintenance trades enjoy a diversity of job options – all of them in demand. From public parks to office towers to schools, you’ll find grounds and janitorial maintenance crews mowing and cleaning. At factories, technicians lubricate and test huge mechanical systems. Along roadways, crews repair damaged asphalt and clear drainage ditches. In short, anything a skilled tradesperson builds – a highway, a power plant, an apartment building – requires another skilled tradesperson to maintain. Make that a small army of skilled tradespeople. In addition to being sought after by private industry, maintenance tradespeople are also recruited by the communities they live in. For instance, HRSD (Hampton Roads Sanitation District) attracts those who like the idea of working for an organization that is committed to safeguarding the environment and providing services that residents depend on. “At HRSD, we hire everyone from plant operators and engineers all the way through instrumentation specialist, electricians, maintenance operators, heavy equipment operators, facility assistants and in my division we have interceptor technicians, pump station supervisors and conveyance system supervisors,” lists Chris Stephan,
HRSD’s Chief of Interceptor Operations, North Shore. “A lot of people start at an assistant position where they kind of get their feet wet and find out what we do, decide what they like,” describes Stephan. “The beautiful thing about HRSD is that you can work your way up the chain. It all depends on initiative, drive and capabilities.” If more training is required to make the job you want a good match, HRSD offers generous education benefits, including 4-year apprenticeship programs in eight different trades. “Upon graduation, you’d be a licensed journeyman in your trade,” Stephan says. Unlike a lot of other employment sectors, wastewater treatment and management is not a field that can be outsourced. “It’s not only job security and excellent benefits, but you also have the added benefit of a purpose in your job,” says Stephan. “You can go into a lot of jobs, and they’re good jobs, very honorable, but here we’re actively working to protect the environment.” Educational requirements vary by job from a high school diploma to a college degree and workers often find good opportunities for career advancement. The Bureau of Labor Statistics expects the need for general maintenance and repair workers to increase by 8% through 2026.

Building a well-paying, long-term career FIELD SUPERVISION/ Some of the most in demand, wellcompensated workers today can be found framing houses, wiring industrial plants, maneuvering huge tunnel sections into place and designing HVAC systems for office buildings. The construction trades offer a diverse menu of occupations and workplace settings along with unlimited opportunities for professional growth. So why are employers having such a hard time filling hardhats? “I talk to people about this all the time,” says Chris Robards, regional operations manager for Crowder Construction Company, a general contracting firm with specialties in civil, environmental and industrial construction. “Growing up you’re told you’ve got to go to college, and so someone who has this love for carpentry or welding or electrical work and wants to go into a trade, that career choice is undermined. And that’s not right.” For those who do go into the construction trades, the rewards can be significant. “The construction market is booming and the number of qualified workers is low; what we’re seeing is that anyone who is good at what they do is employed if they want to be,” says Robards. “If you master your trade, you can name your job, where you want to work, you can almost name your paycheck. What better position to be in?” Whether you start your career as a new high school grad or enter the workforce backed by certification courses or even a degree, this is a field with exceptional 8 | CCEW
opportunities to advance. “Some of our workers have degrees, but a lot of them don’t,” says Robards, including the president of his company. “He started out as a carpenter, worked his way up to foreman, superintendent, shifted over to operations and has had a very successful career without a formal degree. It’s really about working hard and trying to become a master of what you do.” Training programs at high schools, local community colleges and technical schools cover many of these trades. People stay with the field because it pays well, but also because of the job satisfaction. “Every day is different, every project is a new opportunity to learn, to prove yourself,” says Robards. “You don’t get bored. I started in ’97 and I can honestly say I’m as enthusiastic about what I do now as 20 years ago – I love going to work.”

High tech troubleshooters If you think the auto technology available to the average driver is impressive – backup cameras, infotainment systems, keyless entry – you should see what the automotive technicians are working with. Tools of the trade include wireless scanning devices, computerized diagnosis equipment, and microchipped replacement parts. Even the wrenches are ergonomically shaped. It’s high-tech paired with high-touch for those who enjoy troubleshooting. Yes, students can still expect to spend hands-on time repairing engines, brakes and other auto systems – they’ll just bring hightech tools and computer savvy to each job. “They’re not auto mechanics anymore, they’re technicians,” says Rubin Beno,
director of TCC’s Regional Automotive Center. “And the reason for that is the complexity of the vehicles they work on. Not only do they perform maintenance work, but they have to be able to diagnose and repair the vehicle, they have to make determinations, read a wiring diagram, follow a flow chart, and understand computer networking – it’s amazing the technology that goes into these vehicles.” To get started, technicians earn either an associate’s degree or diploma in automotive mechanics, which prepares them for the ASE certification exams, the industry standard. The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects a 6% growth rate in automotive mechanic and tech openings through 2026, with a median
hourly pay rate of $18.50. Experienced mechanics with formal automotive training and top-notch diagnostic and computer skills can command more than $64,000 a year. There can be other perks as well. Right now, HRT (Hampton Roads Transit) is offering skilled mechanics a $2,500 sign-on bonus, generous benefits and opportunities for advancement. “There is so much opportunity for any student who wants to work,” says Rubin. “Cars aren’t going away. They may evolve, but even with new technology, like cars that drive themselves, you still have to have people who can diagnose and repair them. This is a skill you can take anywhere.” CCEW | 9
