Want to Get in on the Ground Floor of Innovation?
WORK IN
HEALTHCARE By: Jeff Heenan-Jalil
HEALTHCARE — a sector often perceived as slow to change and bogged down by regulation — is probably not the first industry you’d associate with innovation. But healthcare is actually poised to become one of the most innovative fields because of its considerable capacity for growth and change, and young job seekers looking to make an impact in a transforming field need look no further.
is one advancement allowing clinicians to perform their jobs better and more efficiently. Radiologists, for example, are using AI to process images, which then helps them diagnose patients more accurately. And the rise of machines doesn’t negate the human element of healthcare. Technology streamlines certain aspects of the job, giving healthcare providers more time to connect with patients.
As one of the largest industries in the United States, healthcare covers a wide breadth of services that all present opportunities for innovative solutions. Digital health media company Health 2.0 points out that the field has recently seen new market entrances, new business models and new applications for technology.
Patients and other professionals are also playing a larger role in designing the healthcare systems and processes of the future. Some institutions are empowering patients, engineers, designers and business people to contribute to innovation programs. Outside input has helped the Helix Centre at Imperial College of London transform end-of-life care and improved the Mayo Clinic Center for Innovation’s clinical exam rooms, for instance.
These and many other factors have the potential to advance healthcare quickly and significantly, but it’s up to the people behind healthcare as a whole and what steps they take. Indu Subaiya, Health 2.0’s co-founder, comments: “Ideally [healthcare innovation] responds in real time to our actions.” With that much room for growth, the healthcare sector is hungry for young talent — and it’s not limited to traditional roles like doctors and nurses. Jobs in healthcare administration are expected to grow by 22 percent over the next two years, offer great monetary benefits and provide high levels of job satisfaction. For bright young people wanting to make a difference and work on the cutting edge of innovation, healthcare is an ideal place to start. ADVANCEMENTS IN HEALTHCARE Data and technology are helping the healthcare field push the innovation envelope. Artificial intelligence
At the heart of these advances is collaboration, which bodes well for the innovative job-seeker without a medical degree. There is a multitude of opportunities to contribute to this field, including these four roles: 1.
MEDICAL ASSISTANT
If you’re looking for more variety in your day-to-day and interested in taking on some medical care duties, a medical assistant position may be a great option. This is a very in-demand role, expected to grow nearly 30 percent between 2016 and 2026 — much faster than the average position within the healthcare industry. 2.
MEDICAL BILLER
job will grow by around 15 percent by 2024. 3.
MEDICAL SECRETARY
Medical secretaries are responsible for making sure medical offices run smoothly and efficiently. It’s one of the most in-demand jobs in the country and is a great role for the organized individual who’s tech-savvy enough to work with new platforms and devices. 4. OCCUPATIONAL THERAPIST AIDE Similar to a medical assistant, an occupational therapist aide helps with treatment and clerical tasks. Occupational therapists focus specifically on rehabilitative services. The key to getting hired into one of these positions is leveraging past transferrable experience. For example, previous admin experience would give you a leg up to get hired as a medical secretary, while a financial background would help you attain a job as a medical biller. Even if you don’t have relevant experience, you can apprentice first. And from there, many of the roles allow for upward mobility through various certifications. So while it may seem like Silicon Valley-type companies are leading the way in the innovative tech space, healthcare should be seen as the new face of innovation. It’s evolving rapidly, and it has huge potential to affect our everyday lives. For those want to make a difference in a transformational field, healthcare provides a wealth of opportunities. ■
This role provides a great opportunity if you have an interest in math and finances. There are plenty of opportunities within the United States — demand for this

GREEN JOBS
TO WATCH IN 2018 CareerCast.com
“Green” has become a huge buzzword in the 21st century. Green as a catch-all adjective applies to any number of things: Trash, transportation, the producing and usage of products. The labor market sits on the precipice of a boom in the “green” economy – but what does that mean? The word green itself invokes imagery of trees, perhaps the wildlife that inhabit woodlands, and nature. And, indeed, green jobs inherently benefit the natural world around us. However, getting into the green economy doesn’t necessarily mean trading in business casual for hiking boots and cargo shorts. Some great green-job opportunities allow workers to transition into a future wave without abandoning their current industries. Positions also vary in minimum requirements for entry, while spanning a variety of fields. Science plays a central role in the green economy, with some of the highest potential income in such fields as Biochemist ($91,190); Environmental Engineer ($86,800); and Meteorologist ($92,070). But the green economy also offers promising opportunities in business and operations. The highest annual median wage among CareerCast. com’s green jobs to watch in 2018 is Natural Sciences
Manager at $118,970, a position that oversees the operational side. This top green job supervises the work of scientists, direct activities related to research and development, and coordinate activities such as testing, quality control, and production. For those looking to make an ecological impact in industries outside of the sciences, Sustainability Managers make $69,400 in annual median salary, and with a growth outlook of 11%, are among the many eco-friendly careers with positive hiring forecasts. CareerCast.com’s Jobs Rated report on green jobs finds the projected growth outlook for most ecologically friendly careers at 10% or higher over the next eight years. A pair of green jobs in construction and manufacturing – two industries with consistently turbulent hiring for the past three decades – are expected to about double in employment by 2026. Wind Turbine Technicians are projected to have 96% more job prospects, while Solar Photovoltaic Installers are forecasted for a 105% growth outlook. These numbers suggest that the green economy is the future of the job market – and green jobs are the future of planet Earth. ■

So, what B did you do to prepare for this
usiness writer and commentator, Suzy Welch, has a go-to question she always asks candidates; “What did you do to prepare for this interview?“. While this question may seem a little unusual and not the typical question relating to candidate qualifications, it really zeros in on the candidate’s motivation and degree of dedication; not only for succeeding in the interview, but more importantly, for success in the job itself.
interview? By: Scott Kee
Anyone can show up at a designated time and place for a job interview. What employers are looking for is a candidate that is willing to go the extra distance and put in the extra effort to get the job. In a previous post, I addressed being prepared for the interview by doing “intel”, but that’s only half the solution. Not only must you do your research before the interview, but you must be ready to tell the interviewer what you did and how you did it if you want to make the ultimate positive impression!
If I were interviewing a candidate and they could repeat back to me the qualifications for the position, I wouldn’t be too impressed. If, on the other hand, they could articulate how their skill set would fit into the company’s upcoming new strategic direction and product line that they’d read about in an obscure trade journal – I’d definitely give them an up-check! Employers are looking for candidates that are: • intellectually curious • willing to roll up their sleeves and do research • committed to seeking out a deep understanding of the job and the organization • able to recount their efforts during the interview, indicating their commitment to the job So……..be ready to tell the interviewer how you got ready for the interview and you will move to the top of the hiring list! ■
