Why Choose a Skilled Trade?

Excellent pay, unlimited opportunity

What’s better than learning a skilled trade that’s in-demand and pays well? Getting paid to learn through a registered apprenticeship. Apprentices are full-time employees, with excellent benefits, who learn their trade through a combination of course work and hands-on training, explains Rick Brooks, with the Virginia Department of Labor and Industry. “Apprentices earn an hourly rate and they get a guaranteed increase once a year, unless the employer decides to pay them more than the graduated scale,” says Brooks. Apprenticeships not only offer one of the most reliable pathways to a well-paying job, but the opportunities for a diverse and rewarding career are unlimited. “For those who want to begin their careers right away and reap the rewards immediately, an apprenticeship is a great option,” says Todd Estes, director of the Apprenticeship Institute at Tidewater Community College (TCC). “The vast majority of the employers we work with cover the instruction costs entirely,” he says. Rather than accumulating school loan debt, apprentices enjoy a regular PM-25694213D

paycheck along with benefits like health insurance, paid vacation and an excellent retirement plan. What’s the pay like? “In the skilled trades, your starting pay as an apprentice is a very decent wage, maybe $12 or $15 an hour,” Estes says. For Virginia apprentices who complete their program, the average starting salary is $50,000. TCC partners with regional employers to offer the classroom portion of a wide variety of apprenticeship programs; they also keep tabs on apprenticeship opportunities in the area. You’ll find a good overview of these apprenticeship programs, including links to local employers with openings, at www.tcc. edu/about-tcc/apprenticeship-institute. You can also call TCC’s Apprenticeship Institute directly at 757-822-1784. “We get lots of calls every day from folks seeking those opportunities,” says Estes. High schools commonly offered robust vocational and technical education programs through the 1970s for students interested in a skilled trades career. “But there was a shift, certainly in the 80s and 90s, where we did a very good job nationally of promoting college as the primary

pathway to success,” Estes says. “I think the pendulum swung too far away from apprenticeships and these occupationally-specific programs; they took a backseat in the conversation.” Now he’s seeing apprenticeships and technical training programs once again become part of the public dialog. In fact, Virginia is one of the states in the vanguard of this reassessment – the commonwealth has the largest number of active apprenticeships in the nation and is second only to California in the number of people currently enrolled in state-registered apprenticeships. “There’s been a concerted effort in the policy arenas to focus on these opportunities, more than there were five, 10, even 15 years ago,” says Estes. Why? “The realization that these are very viable pathways to lifelong career success,” he says. “It can be very lucrative if you want to talk about the financials. “Whether you’re a young person or a career switcher, there are a lot of fantastic opportunities out there and it is worth your time to see what’s available. We encourage people to take a look at our website and give us a call – we’re happy to talk with anyone.”

Manufacturing Trades Made in America: a great career The technology is impressive, the jobs are intellectually rewarding, the pay and benefits outstanding – welcome to the field of manufacturing where skilled tradespeople are in high demand. “There is a skills gap in manufacturing,” notes A.J. Jorgenson, communications director for the Washington D.C.-based Manufacturing Institute (www.themanufacturinginstitute.org). “With baby boomer retirements and new growth in the industry, we estimate a need for about 2 million new workers by 2025.” To help fill those positions, manufacturers are raising pay. “On average, manufacturing employees nationwide make higher wages and benefits than any other industry in the country,” says Nick D’Antonio, project manager for the institute’s Dream It, Do It initiative. “If manufacturers can get the talent they need, they are willing to pay more for those employees. And when you look at overall compensation on top of wages, it’s a commitment to education reimbursement and support, continuous development programs, a flexible work environment and excellent healthcare insurance.” So why aren’t these jobs being snatched up? Misconceptions about the type of work, says D’Antonio. “This is not your grandfather’s manufacturing job. Today you work in clean facilities that are smarter than they have ever been before, which means employees have the opportunity to interact with some of the most advanced technologies in the marketplace. You’re not just putting widgets together and doing the same old task all day.”

Think automation, connected enterprise, robotics, 3-D printing, clean rooms and clean suits – “It’s the next generation of making things,” says Jorgenson. Adds D’Antonio, “These are jobs that require quick decision making on the plant floor. A lot of the traditional kind of mundane manufacturing jobs have gone overseas, but one of the things we’ve retained here is a lot of niche and customized manufacturing. How do you get started in the field? “Because of the skills gap that exists, many manufacturers will train people they identify as hard workers,” says D’Antonio. “But to position yourself optimally, look at your local community college or technical college to get the relevant training.” For young people, for career switchers, for males and females of every ethnicity, manufacturing offers a rewarding, generously-compensated, long-term career. “We’re going to see new types of jobs developing that will be even more exciting and will require thoughtful, creative individuals,” says D’Antonio. “Facilities are becoming smarter, more integrated with technology, and those individuals who get involved with the industry today will be the first line of workers who get to ride this wave and manage it moving forward. They really will be the best and the brightest.”

Welders

The VIPs of the skilled trades If you want a resume that opens doors everywhere, become a welder. “There are definitely not enough welders to go around,” notes Scott Cummings, a vice president with CDI Marine. Shipyards, power plants, large construction sites, manufacturing – all of them compete for skilled welders. One of the problems employers point to is that baby boomers are aging out of the workforce but not enough new welders are moving into the field to replace them. That places a high premium on this sought-after skill. People who are interested in this field will find a number of different welding programs offered by community colleges and technical schools, but many local shipyards and marine services companies also offer training that leads to certification. “Every company has to put their welders through a certification program to ensure their work is quality, whether it’s for the Navy, the Coast Guard or whoever

it is you’re supporting,” says Cummings. “So we run all of our welders through our own in-house certification program and teach them how to weld, whether it’s steel, aluminum, copper, nickel, all the different materials that they would be exposed to,” he says. “They have to actually conduct a welding and we have outside people do testing on it to make sure the weld penetrations are proper, that they got the right temperatures, and they haven’t warped anything. Once their work has been evaluated and approved, then they can start working with our more experienced welders. After welders are certified, they can carry that credential with them to any job. For somebody getting into this field, you’ll have a career for life,” says Cummings. Welders may find themselves in a variety of environmental conditions, from manning a workbench on the floor of a plant to perching atop a

high-rise to working underwater. Most welders work in manufacturing-related businesses, though in our region, shipyards and their subcontractors are one of the largest sources of jobs. Pay is directly related to skill level, a good reason to keep training current. Some welders move into supervisory or management positions while others branch into programming or operating robotic and other welding machines. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, top earners report an annual pay rate of over $63,170, while the median hourly wages are $19.35 per hour. Welding engineers command a median $91,310 a year and welders who are willing to travel and work under challenging conditions can earn well over $100,000 a year. In demand and well paid – a welding career is hard to beat.

Truck Drivers

On the road to a high-paying career As home to a bustling port and commercial hub, Hampton Roads sends a large number of trucks on their way every day. But as busy as our region is, we still account for only a small portion of the nearly three million trucks on the road today. With large numbers of older pros reaching retirement age, the need for drivers will only increase. Rebecca Higginbotham, the program coordinator for ATI’s commercial driving program, says the school can’t train drivers fast enough. “We have recruiters come in from different companies all the time and I’d say 90 percent of our students have job offers before they even graduate,” she says. That driver shortage is pushing up pay. “Wages, especially in some of the longer haul segments where the shortage is most acute, have been going up aggressively and will continue to go up aggressively,” says Bob Costello, chief economic advisor for ATA (American Trucking Associations). “And that’s only the start of it because you’re also going to get health insurance, you’re going to get a 401(k), you’re going to get paid time off and you’re going to get life insurance. I always tell drivers if you’re not getting that stuff, you need to find another company to work for, it’s out there.” PM-25694204D

And ultimately when we’re done with the design and that product is installed, our tradespeople have been involved from the very beginning. Great pay, excellent benefits and respect – in Hampton Roads, there’s a reason a significant number of workers are employed in the shipbuilding/ship repair sector. There’s just one problem: finding enough skilled tradespeople to meet the growing need. “We’re constantly looking for people,” says Scott Cummings, a vice president, with CDI Marine. “We have other shipyards contacting us, asking, ‘Do you have a couple of welders we can borrow for a few months or a pipefitter?’ With all the work coming into the region right now, this is going to be a huge need for a very long time.” One obstacle hiring managers face is that young people choosing careers, or even career switchers looking for a new area of work, simply don’t know how good these jobs can be. Bill Crow, president of locallybased Virginia Ship Repair Association, places workers’ average annual income at $81,531; excellent benefits are a given. And tradespeople in this sector can also expect plenty of opportunity for growth and advancement. In fact, much of the senior leadership at regional shipbuilding and ship repair yards came up through the trades and workers are routinely promoted from within to supervisory positions. Shipyard tradespeople are also highly valued for their skill base, which combines a foundational hands-on knowledge with an ever-increasing amount of high tech expertise. At CDI, says Cummings, “it’s no longer just unroll a blueprint and build it – you’ve got to be creative, you’ve got to

Maintenance Diverse field welcomes skilled tradespeople Anything a skilled tradesperson builds – a highway, a power plant, an apartment building – requires another skilled tradesperson to maintain. Make that a small army of skilled tradespeople. From public parks to office towers to schools, you’ll find grounds and janitorial maintenance crews mowing and cleaning. At factories, technicians lubricate and test huge mechanical systems. Along roadways, crews repair damaged asphalt and clear drainage ditches. Clearly, the roster of maintenance trades professionals is a diverse one. In addition to being sought after by private industry, maintenance tradespeople are also recruited by the communities they live in. For instance, HRSD (Hampton Roads Sanitation District) attracts those who like the idea of working for an organization that is committed to safeguarding the environment and providing services that residents depend on. “At HRSD, we hire everyone from plant operators and engineers all the way through instrumentation specialist, electricians, maintenance operators, heavy equipment operators, facility assistants and in my division we have interceptor technicians, pump station supervisors and conveyance system supervisors,” lists Chris Stephan, HRSD’s Chief of Interceptor Operations, North Shore. “A lot of people start at an assistant position where they kind of get their feet wet and find out what we do, decide what they like,” describes Stephan. “The beautiful thing about HRSD is that you can work your way up the chain. It all depends on initiative, drive and capabilities.” If more training is required to make the job

you want a good match, HRSD offers generous education benefits, including 4-year apprenticeship programs in eight different trades. “Upon graduation, you’d be a licensed journeyman in your trade,” Stephan says. Unlike a lot of other employment sectors, wastewater treatment and management is not a field that can be outsourced. “It’s not only job security and excellent benefits, but you also have the added benefit of a purpose in your job,” says Stephan. “You can go into a lot of jobs, and they’re good jobs, very honorable, but here we’re actively working to protect the environment.” Educational requirements vary by job from a high school diploma to a college degree and workers often find good opportunities for career advancement. The Bureau of Labor Statistics expects the need for general maintenance and repair workers to increase by 8% through 2026.

Reducing human impact on the environment for over 75 years. Future generations will inherit clean waterways and be able to keep them clean.
