REPORTS
On behalf of the new General Committee 2016 – 2017 elected at the AGM, I would like to thank the Membership for giving us the opportunity to contribute to the Club. There was a great turnout and all the resolutions proposed by the last committee were approved with overwhelming support. We almost had a record-breaking number of entries in the Port Shelter Regatta, with about 40 boats racing on the first two days of October, which might have something to do with the charisma of Bridget—our new Rear Commodore, Sailing. It is a fantastic opening to the sailing season. The building of the club boat is going well under the supervision of the working group led by David Hughes. It will be ready by the end of the year and members can start to think about naming the vessel. The General Committee is open to suggestions and there may be a competition to choose a new name for the boat.
C.K. Chan Commodore
The new boat racks are in full operation and we have the benefit of our old parking lot for our cars again. Everyone is welcome to come and enjoy the food and drinks at the clubhouse—we have ample parking available. Members can also enjoy the space of the boatyard which was more like a maze for passers-by in the last two years. More boats can be lifted to be serviced and we shall be expecting improving revenues in the near future because of this. Supported by the Master Plan by ‘MAP Architecture and Planning Ltd.’ and HAB Submission by ‘Executive Counsel Ltd.’, the Club Development Committee will soon take the lead in the modification of lease conditions with which we can then plan the build of new facilities for our club.

We are looking for volunteers to help set up and run some fun kayak racing round the bay—racing from the dinghy slipway around the fairway and out to the cardinal mark and straight back to the bar. These would be timely for Happy Hour with fun prizes on offer, but we need some volunteers to get it up and running. If you are keen please contact me directly on gm@hhyc.org.hk
Lisa Keatley General Manager
For those of you who are experienced dinghy sailors why not try out our high performance 29er skiffs, these are a lot of fun and we are happy for our instructors to take you out for a quick trial. Our Women on Water sessions will re-start on 11 November for six consecutive weeks. The weather is perfect to experience some fun social sailing. Please book with sailadmin@hhyc.org.hk We have lots to look forward to over the coming two months leading up to the festivities of the season. F&B are working hard on some fresh new menu items and promotions with a BIG focus on making it more pleasing for vegetarians and children. Quiz Night is on 18 November, so get swotting. If you are looking for an office party, why not join the ‘Share a Hebe Christmas’ event on 2 December. Live band and traditional Christmas buffet at a cost per head—small budget BIG party atmosphere—fantastic opportunity for your company—catering for small teams looking to avoid the minimum spend. The Hong Kong Welsh Choir will join us for Christmas Carols on 9 December and this year we are having a Children’s Christmas Show (with a very special guest from the North Pole) on 11 December. New Year’s Eve this year will be themed ‘Around the World in 80 Days’ and following the success of the Love Boat event in 2015, this won’t disappoint. Book early for HK$988 members and guests—four courses and free flow, live DJ, midnight countdown with piper! It’s going to be a busy time and we are looking forward to seeing you all support our great events. Boat racks are completed and the club car park is back to normal—don’t forget to get your free weekday lunchtime parking—two hours between 1pm and 3pm.

It shows fresh flavours, with a combination of primary fruit. Cabernet Sauvignon Deep red with translucent crimson hues. Big rich ripe Cabernet Sauvignon characters dominate the wine with the aid of fine French oak. Dark berries and dark chocolate tones finish the profile. DRAGONS
Words Grégoire Bourrut Lacouture
The new season started with a very busy and tiring schedule. Most of our training took place at Middle Island—leading to long trips in the morning and in the evening. From now on, we are back at Port Shelter and will resume our normal training schedule. The new season also means new people and The Dragons are very happy to welcome two more sailors to their Optimist Squad—Steven Chen and Patrick Feng—both of whom are still sailing under CHN sails but will change to a HKG 3XX very soon.
We sadly have to say goodbye to a few sailors who are retiring from the Optimists to join the Laser Squad, Pei Yip, Pasu Chu and Timothee Bourrut Lacouture. Additionally, Yee Loong Tang joined Antonio Franco and Iain Duncan in the Laser Team. As both fleets are growing, we would like to introduce two of our new team leaders for this season—Christine Lau who will be taking care of the Optimists: ophebedragons@gmail.com and Vivio Chan: hebedragons1@gmail.com, who will be looking after the Laser team.
Finally, on behalf of the Dragons, we would like to wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year for 2017.

Get a glimpse behind the scenes at the
HKODA Nationals
Words Grégoire Bourrut Lacouture
Preparing for a regatta is no easy task—it takes more than a few people and one or two days of preparation—it takes a team of dedicated volunteers months of hard work. Gregoire Bourrut Lacouture shares what it took to organise the HKODA Nationals and how they did it.
The Hong Kong Optimist Association is run by volunteers (mostly parents of sailors) who all work during the week. During their free time they devote themselves to deliver the event of the year for the Optimists. Without a club or staff resources, it is basically up to the volunteers and all of the Hong Kong Clubs to get this regatta up and running. The 2016 event held on 8 – 10 October really started in February 2016. At that time, we were in need of a venue—it’s a different one each year and usually, each club will take turns. This year, it was supposed to be ABC’s turn, but for the past few years the growing number of boats has been an issue for clubs hosting the event and they had to regretfully decline. We then asked the next club in line, HHYC, who had to also decline due to the lack of space (note at that time, the lease issue of the Club was not approved and all the boats were on the ground leaving no room for extra boats). As a last resort, we asked RHKYC who accepted despite having other events on that weekend. From then on, our team started the search for sponsors. We teamed up for the third year running with Hong Kong Sailing Federation (HKSF) and the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD), who secured part of the financial support. We could also count on our regular sponsors—Rooster, Far East, Lactel, Valrhona, Fragrant Harbour, Watson’s Water and Calamansi Design. In May we asked our sponsor, Calamansi Design, to come up with an idea for the poster and flyers to promote the event— not only in Hong Kong, but also overseas. Once printed, our Hong Kong sailors who travelled to the Asians, Worlds, Europeans and other countries over the summer, became our ambassadors and helped with promotion. The target for this year was to get at least six countries to compete.

All race management matters and the website
Fast forward to the end of August—each of us had to coordinate our own tasks with our suppliers, prepare and publish the Notice of Race, request the race permit from the Marine Department, update the website and Facebook, welcome the first entries, coordinate the requests from the overseas coaches (coach boats) and draw up a list of our requirements! On the race management side, Brenda Davies (our Assistant Race Officer) has some great experience in what is required—you wouldn’t be able to imagine the huge amount of equipment needed—from paperclips to horns without forgetting the race flags and the sailors list! As all this was happening, during the weekly sailor’s training, Betty Hui went to all the clubs to prepare a video of our sailors (and coaches) to be projected onto a giant screen at the Gala event—this video can be seen on HKODA’s Facebook page. In September we had weekly meetings with up to 10 people to coordinate the venue, control the entries, write the Sailing Instructions, design the floor map to ensure all boats are properly parked and ensure confirmation of the ribs. We also had to coordinate the delivery of all the supplies to the RHKYC and then to Middle Island. The last meeting—just a week from the event—consisted of checking all the various departments, finalising all the last-minute details and last but not least—allocating duties to all the volunteers to ensure the event ran smoothly. On the social side, the barbecue and flag parade had to be prepared with the choice of menu (as well as the daily lunch for 40+ volunteers); the exact rundown of the evening, the speeches, preparation of the prizes for the lucky draw…the list went on. Di Walters prepared the contents of the sailors’ goody bags.
The day before the race, we all gathered at the RHKYC to prepare the venue together with the RHKYC staff. We had to clear the old hardstand full of Lasers, set up the flag poles, the beach
flags, the stage (and carry it all the way to the lawn), prepare the registration office, race office, prepare all the safety boats, water stations, put stickers on all the boats as well as so much more in order to be ready on time for Saturday morning to welcome the sailors to the 2016 HKODA National and Open Championships. This behind-the-scenes look does not include the enormous amount of work undertaken by the coaches and the transportation of boats to Middle Island as well as HKSF for the allocation and arrangements of the charter boats. It took an army of volunteers and a boatload of work to make the HKODA Nationals so successful.

SAIL TRAINING CENTRE
Finally, the week preceding the event focused mostly on the final details—communication with the sailors and teams as well as preparation and printing of all the forms needed during the race—protest forms, jury forms, competitors list, entries in sailwave, printing of the bow and rear stickers and many other small administrative tasks which take a long time! One of the toughest duties was to transfer all of our equipment from Kellet Island to Middle Island!

THE DRAGONS
at the HKODA Nationals and Open Championship 2016
The HKODA Nationals and Open Championship is an event that has grown massively over the last few years. This year we had Australia, China, India, Macau, Singapore, Taiwan and Thailand join the regatta. Apart from the usual Hong Kong teams, our Hebe Dragons were among a total of 90 sailors who competed. It was a coincidence with last year Nationals in terms of weather (for memory, two days were washed out due to a T3) as a typhoon was approaching Hong Kong. Lucky only a T1 signal was in force on the first day and we were constantly checking the Hong Kong Observatory application until we read: “Unless Aere rapidly intensifies or moves closer to Hong Kong, the chance of issuing Strong Signal, No 3 during the day is not high!” It was for sure a big relief for us! During the three days of the regatta, ‘Mr Wind’ was not cooperating—winds were up and down, shifting 180 degrees and it was a big challenge for both the RO, Charlie Manzoni, and the sailors to sail a proper course! Luckily three races were completed each day which led to a proper Gold and Silver Fleet on the last day for two more races (the third one was abandoned due to a ‘dead’ wind). For our sailors, it was a very good opportunity to practise what they had learned during the regatta—especially under ‘not so good’ wind conditions. Tactics were very important and because of the presence of the ‘U’ Flag (no sailors within one minute of the start above the start line), they were not able to do their preferred start—the deep start—which involved coming from the front of the committee boat to the start using a starboard approach. The first day was clearly a challenging one not knowing the level of the overseas sailors besides their reputation of being high-level competitors. This proved to be correct with Australia leading the race. It did not deteriorate—Bincker in the first race who reached 3rd place followed by 18th in the second race. Newcomers to the team, Patrick Feng, clearly impressed too with 16th position in both the first race followed by Steven Chen in 19th in the third race. Keenan also started his Nationals in good position coming 18th in the first race. After a long hot day, all the sailors were happy to go home.
36 HEBE JEBES • NOV/DEC 2016
Words Christine Lau
On the second day, a clear sky and sunshine started as early as 7am. Again, another hot day was forecasted but with less wind which could be a handicap for some of our heavier sailors. On the other hand, it proved to be very beneficial for Lumiere who reached 8th position in the last race of the day and became the Dragon leader. He was followed by Bincker with consistent results, as well as Patrick and Stevan (all within 15 – 20th). Gabriel and Sean tried their best to concentrate as much as possible and Sean managed to secure 18th position in the fourth race while it was tougher for our ‘heavy’ sailors Keenan, Carmen, Timothee and Gabriella. Back on shore, all the sailors were in a rush to get dressed for the Flag Parade followed by a barbecue and lucky draw organised by HKODA. As none of our sailors were on the podium, at least Carmen and Bincker won the best prize in the lucky draw which was certainly the most impressive—a twohour ride on a 100 ft racing boat Scallywag. On the last morning of the regatta, one of our sailors told me that the only thing going round and round in his mind was, “I am very tired!”, on endless repeat! He then eagerly repeated a thousand times after the last race, “I want to go home!” The fleet was divided into Gold and Silver for the final races. Lumiere, Patrick, Bincker and Steven were the lucky ones. Again, it was a big advantage for the lighter sailor as the wind was barely 4 – 5 knots. Lumiere managed this lack of wind with a great performance by finishing 12th and 15th in the two races of the day (4th and 3rd within the Hong Kong Sailors). In the silver fleet, Keenan and Sean were leading, with Sean coming 3rd within the Hong Kong sailors in the first race as well as Keenan in the last race of the day. Kudos also to Brian, who managed to squeeze himself into 6th position among the Hong Kong sailors in the first race. At the end of the long weekend, it took a lot—both physically and mentally for the young sailors—but I have to say ‘Well done!’ to our team sailors. I can see a lot of determined, committed sailors with great team spirit.
SAIL TRAINING CENTRE

UK Optimist National Championship Largs, Scotland
Words Gabriel Ma (HKG 88)
On 31 July 2016, the sun was shining in Largs, Scotland and I was walking excitedly to the venue of the Volvo Gill UK Optimist National Championship 2016. With the wind gently blowing, I was ready for my first race.
I was hiking out and luffing up to balance the boat. Facing the strong winds and the cold weather, I urged myself not to feel defeated. I think this regatta was exhilarating and I know I will be back next year.
On the first day, the winds were 18 knots. I was not accustomed to it since I had little chance to sail under such conditions in Hong Kong. Therefore, I came 81st in my first race. Then things started to change dramatically after my coach, Adam, taught me how to work in the gusts. All of a sudden, I increased my placing from 81st to 40th.
The next day was another amazing day. Even though the wind was blowing stronger, I still managed to place in the top 30 in both races. It was challenging for me trying to cope, but fierce winds were not the only obstacle. The rest of the regatta seemed to go smoothly for all competitors except me. While everyone had a smile beaming across their faces, I capsized my boat because I was over-heeling it. This got everyone talking about who had capsized. I should have felt embarrassed, but instead I thought it was a very useful experience. Capsizing in the freezing-cold water pushed me on to recover as a quickly as possible. The water was so chilly that when I touched it, I started shivering. If it was not for the freezing water, I would not have been able to get back up so quickly.

2016 HKSF Youth Championships 420 and 29er Selection Regatta Organised by the Hong Kong Sailing Federation, this regatta attracted the top sailors from the 420 and 29er classes to compete 1 – 2 October. Racing took place on the water west of Po Toi with regatta support based at the Middle Island Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club House. This regatta is also one of the selection events for the 46th Youth Sailing World Championships which will be held in Auckland in December.
The racing proved to be closer on day two with different teams taking race wins. In the end it was Siu Ka Chun and Tsoi Yat Ming who topped the 420 class with six boats. Calum Gregor and Russell Aylsworth won 29er class with 11 boats. Congratulations to all the winners and participants. It was great to see a number of new youth teams and everyone enjoyed the ideal racing conditions.
It was a wet start with a red rainstorm warning signal issued by the Hong Kong Observatory early in the morning. Race Officer, David Norton, started two classes—420 and 29er. He reported that the regatta was very smooth although the weather was bad in the morning, but luckily it turned round and improved when the regatta started. Norton chose the race area west of Po Toi Island for a consistent fresh breeze.
A big thank you—especially to our sponsor Gill and Storm Force Marine Ltd. for the support with the lovely prizes. Also, thank you to the amazing volunteers who made this regatta an exciting, successful and rewarding event.
Racing got underway with 8 to 10 knot winds but by the second race it picked up to 12 to 15 knots. The sailors made the most of the conditions and five races were completed on day one. In the 29er fleet, Calum Gregor and Russell Alysworth were the overnight leaders dominating the racing on day one. In the 420 class the points gap was close, but Siu Ka Chun and Tsoi Yat Ming held the overnight lead. The forecast didn’t promise good winds for day two, but once in the race area, Norton was pleased to find 8 to 12 knots of wind from the north east. A brief shift towards the north led to some course alternations before the first start, but it shifted back towards the east and Norton was able to change the course during the first race to accommodate the shift. After that the breeze was fairly steady for the rest of the day and with only three races left the sailors were back onshore in good time.

THE PORT SHELTER PIRATE PAGE Words Captain ‘Redscarf’ Chaos
Ahoy there apprentice pirates! Listen carefully while I tell a tale of woe and tragedy. On a dark and stormy night, when the Hong Kong Observatory thought fit to hoist the T3 Signal, I defied the Hebe Haven Yacht Club regulations and set sail. My pitching and rolling vessel crashed through the waves, and struck a semi-submerged rock which I had not perceived upon my navigation charts. Let the lesson be learned, my ship lies wrecked at the bottom of the salty sea. Without a craft my crew have mutinied, and I must entice them back to the high seas with the promise of a better boat. Now to the challenge my faithful friends. I command you to design a ship for my piracy purpose...
All drawings, or paintings, must have your name, age and contact number clearly written on the back. Entries must be given to the Sail Training Centre Office by Sunday 19 November Every entry will be judged by my good self.

HOISTING THE STRONG WIND SIGNAL NO. 3 In 1917 the first numbered signal system geared to the warning of wind conditions in Hong Kong was introduced. In 1956 the No. 3 Strong Wind Signal was introduced and in Hong Kong we are unable to set sail when it is hoisted. If a typhoon is on the way, the Sail Training Centre Staff need to tie down all our boats to stop them blowing away; so sometimes we have to stop our sailing programmes even though it is still only T1. However, if there is no typhoon and the signal is for a Tropical Depression, we eagerly await its lowering, and set sail in the fantastic winds that the weather brings. Unless you are under primary school age, do not get excited. schools and offices stay open and everyone goes to work as usual!

THE BOWLINE This is one of the most useful knots you can learn. It is so important and is sometimes called the ‘King of the Knots’. In 1691, John Smith wrote about the Boling Knot in his work ‘A Sea Grammar’. The bowline is used to make a loop at the end of a line. The knot tightens under load, but is easy to untie—using a method called ‘breaking the knot.’ At the HHYC STC, we use the bowline knot to: • •
secure the painters onto the boat in front when we are towing and, fasten the jib halyard to the jib on the Picos.

QUEST YACHTING TYPHOON SERIES 2016 Words Nicole Arnulphy 44 HEBE JEBES • NOV/DEC 2016
to be lifted again, instead willing the breeze line to come to us. Admitting failure, the anchor was raised hand over hand and we moved on again. Racing finally got under way and the Typhoon Series was underway.
As race officer on day one, I couldn’t have wished for a better team of assistants on the Committee Boat—especially in conditions that were more testing than usual. With the old Frasier Doig Club Boat in new hands, we were spending our racing summer on a chartered junk. With Mikey having done an impressive job of attaching flag rails with cable ties and creating a gun mount built up on a shipping crate—we were all set—what could possibly go wrong? Armed with clipboards, stopwatches, radios and more we headed to ‘the vicinity of Shelter Island.’
Many lessons were learnt that day • The smallest wake makes for a big roll on a junk—and if it's not secured it’s going overboard! • Be careful where you mount the gun—even blanks can set varnish on fire. • Anyone who doesn’t skipper a committee boat regularly cannot mind-read. • A windless is worth its weight in gold for an indecisive Race Officer. • Finally, we have an amazing bunch of people who volunteer their time to be a part of our Race Management Team and I’m sure for them the new club boat can't come soon enough!
The driver stopped the boat and dropped anchor, but the wind just did not come. So we decided to move further out, the engine was fired up and the little old lady of the boat lifted the anchor by hand. As we reached the edge of the island the driver slowed and was asked to stop, he did—and the anchor was dropped. The intention was to see what the breeze was like without the apparent wind created by driving forwards. There was still no breeze, I didn't have the heart to ask for the anchor
The summer continued with some very impressive sailing over a variety of races and conditions. With day prizes awarded at the end of each day's racing, the final prize-giving could double up as a party—a fitting end to a hard fought series!

CRUISING COMMENTS Words Brian Heineken
The oldest known lunar calendar dates back to roughly 10,000 years ago. I think it's remarkable how abrupt a change of wind and weather is noticed around this time of year. So it's little wonder our ancient ancestors marked the 15th day of the 8th moon to commemorate the beginning of Autumn. For those of you who have spent a reasonable number of seasons around 22 degrees latitude you'll certainly recognise more north to the strengthening on shore breezes all happening around the time we start to see the moon cakes arriving in local shops and the new monsoon bringing with it a welcome reprieve from the stifling summer heat and humidity. Other obvious clues that Autumn has arrived in Hong Kong is of course the sudden appearance of Ugg boots, mittens, scarves and beanies—all happening precisely the moment the high temperature dips below a frigid 28C. For us cruising boat owners, the new season welcomes the promise of more comfortable overnight anchorages, with cooler nights not requiring the use of a generator and also not having to bother with UV protectant boat covers and typhoon preparation. Perhaps superfluous to mention, replacing all onboard rose wine bottles with red and no longer requiring a table booking at weekend seafood restaurants! Certainly for me, the change of season invites me to reflect on all the fun those fading dog days of summer brought while sailing around Hong Kong. I'd like to share one destination in particular—Lamma Island. Lamma, for one reason or another, seems to be an anchorage we Hebe Haveners rarely venture out to. I found Lamma to be an idyllic Hong Kong boating destination. We recently anchored just off Power Station Beach (approximately 22°13.100’ N 114°070’ E) and found it to be very sheltered from any breeze except southwesterly. The bottom consisted of dense sand which held the anchor securely. Whether the wind and waves favour either route, you can reach the western side of Lamma by going around the south or north side of Hong Kong Island in less than 27 miles charted distance from HHYC. The northern route provides an exciting view through Victoria Harbour, and the southern route offers opportunities for a seafood lunch at Po Toi, ABC and Royal at Middle Island or a stop in Stanley or Aberdeen.

From Power Station Beach it's a five-to-seven-minute walk to the village of Yung Shue Wan, where we found plenty of shops to reprovision, a lively night scene with ample watering holes and quite interesting and friendly locals. If you're keen for a hike, Lamma offers some of the best, relaxed trekking in Hong Kong. From Yung Shue Wan you can hike a northern loop that takes about three hours at a slower pace. Additionally, at my recommendation, is to hike the well laid out path that connects Sok Kwu Wan and Yung Shue Wan. Along this path you'll find a charming little hotel near Hung Shing Yeh beach that offers a nice tea set or cold beverage and some great views from higher peaks. Less adventurous friends who couldn't make the sailing trip down from Pak Sha Wan can be collected at ferry piers from Central or Aberdeen at Yung Shue Wan, Shek Kok Tsui or Sok Kwu Wan and make the easy walk back to the yacht for the overnight stay. Overall, I found the trip to and from Lamma, the opportunities for fun on the island and the local island mentality to add up to an extremely worthwhile destination.
Lamma local and super friendly chap, Francis, discusses his beach catamaran with us. Francis won the Around the Island race over a dozen years ago!

Malarky - 1 and Eagles Quest rafted at anchor off Power Station Beach Malarky - 1 和 Eagles Quest 停泊在發電廠海灘對出海面
If any of this has piqued interest in a group sail to Lamma or other destinations, let's set something up! The Hong Kong COA is a local organisation that has the ability to organise boats from other yacht clubs to meet us there. Email their chairman, Rob Winter at chairman@coahk.org or myself at planeandsea@gmail.com. It would be an outstanding weekend to get a bunch of us rafted up for a relaxed overnight off Lamma Island or elsewhere. Let's take advantage of the approaching cooler weather and get out on the water! In other cruising news, a very special thank you to Dave and Jackie Peers who shared their incredible voyage from Hebe Haven to New Zealand in an event hosted at our club. What a truly admirable adventure they had aboard their yacht Brigadoon during a two-year voyage back to their home country. Wishing fair winds to you all.

請發電郵予該會的 主席 Rob Winter(chairman@coahk.org)或本人(planeandsea@gmail.com) 。

With my background in electrical engineering, project management and my extensive experience with local infrastructure projects, I have helped to steer the Club Development Committee in complying with statutory requirements for the Club’s lease renewal during the past two years as the Vice Commodore. My role as the Rear Commodore Sailing for two years has also enriched my understanding of this sport— especially in the area of race management. Whenever I am not taking part in committee work, I am on a sailing boat racing, cruising, making deliveries or helping Sailability sailors on the water.

Sailing is now my life. I have made more friends amongst the yacht clubs over the past few years than my 30 plus years as a businessman in Hong Kong. My goals are to enhance the Club’s relationship with neighbouring villages, the Sai Kung Rural Committee and government departments as well as enable the re-provisioning of Club facilities and Infrastructure at HHYC to cope with the growing demands of the Membership. I have been involved in the Hebe Haven Yacht Club since 1978, when I started sailing with my parents on their 25-foot cruising boat. I completed my introductory dinghy course through HKSF in 1991, and went on to spend most of my Saturday mornings sailing Toppers around Shelter Cove. About 12 years ago, I did my first yacht race on a Saturday afternoon in Port Shelter aboard the yacht Struan. I have been racing ever since and have had the opportunity to participate in some fantastic racing, including many regattas around the region and a number of off-shore races.

I have been a member of the General Committee since 2012 and have served as Rear Commodore of Sailing for the past three years. This elected position involves me working closely with staff and management at our Club to bring the best sailing opportunities for all the members and non-members interested in the sailing. Whilst all sports should be accessible to all people, I thoroughly enjoy my position on the Hong Kong Sailing Federation Council as the HHYC representative. As a member of the Selection Working Party our primary focus is the selection of the best possible team for young sailors to represent Hong Kong and helping the athletes to prepare for this. Hebe Haven Yacht Club has changed a lot over the past four decades, but the Club is still a place to meet people, socialise and go sailing or boating. My aim as Vice Commodore is to bring continuity of vision and institutional knowledge to the Flag Officer Team on the general committee.

I will continue to promote the core mission of the Club: to provide high quality racing and regatta events for members and I aim to organise activities to introduce racing to new boat owners and members. I didn’t know much about the Club when I joined about six years ago—now I have so many great friends here. I didn’t know much about sailing either—my sailing experience was limited to Topper dinghies on Keilder reservoir in the UK—now I’ve crewed on Beneteau Firsts in several Round the Island, Harbour, Typhoon Series and China Cup Races and a bit more dinghy sailing in Hong Kong and China. The Club is about balance—we have a diverse membership from all kinds of backgrounds with all kinds of interests. I’m doing my best to help make the Club as inclusive as possible for everyone: sailors— cruising and racing, power boaters, jet skiers, sailability, SUP-ers, social members, F&B-ers, boat fixerup-ers, beach cleaner-up-ers, young ‘ns, old ‘ns and everyone in between. I wish to help the Club to have clarity in how we run and organise things, to be well structured, as fair as possible, legally compliant and in the best interests of the Club members. This requires someone like myself who has an excellent knowledge of—and involvement in—club-wide activities, a meticulous eye for detail and legal connections to help ensure compliance.

Born in England, of a Hong Kong father and English mother, Paula moved to Hong Kong in 1994, after an invitation to a Hebe Haven member’s wedding showed her what she was missing! As a member of Hebe for over 15 years, she has taken an active part in club life and events, from helping with the Hebe Race week, to learning to sail a dinghy with WOW and currently organising the 2016, 24-hour race. Paula is a member of the Power Boat Working Group. Professionally, Paula is the Chief Operating Officer of an international recruitment company. Prior to her current position, Paula held a number of front and back office management roles in insurance, most recently specialising in marine insurance.
Paula KING General Committee Member GenCom
In her ‘spare’ time, Paula is a mother of two teenagers who learned and continue to sail at Hebe, the partner of a yachtie and power boater and the Club Secretary of the Sai Kung Stingrays Rugby Club, where amongst other things she has organised numerous successful events from small gatherings to 500+ people parties. Paula aims to put her management, operational and organisational skills to use behind the scenes, to ensure that operationally we can support, manage and administer sail training opportunities, development and growth with a member-centric focus. This can only be done by ensuring that the Club’s operations are up to date, scalable and sustainable.
I have been a member of Hebe Haven for four years and own and operate a motorboat that is moored at the Club. I am at the Club most days when I am not away flying as a corporate pilot. I have, over the past 25 years, had extensive management experience in club and corporate affairs, having run both casinos and an aviation company. Since joining the Club, my wife has sat on the F&B committee, we have both contributed to the 24-hour race in various capacities and I am a regular volunteer for Sailability.
Andrew BADENHORST General Committee Member GenCom FnBCom
My goal is to see Hebe Haven return to its core values, and for us as members to realise the spirit of those values. I would like to see this returned to a club FOR the members by members, one that members want to go to over other venues, to eat, drink, socialise and most importantly of all, enjoy the boating lifestyle and all that Hebe Haven Yacht club has to offer. In order to do that, I feel we need to tackle issues with a mature outlook without any self serving agendas. People elected by the members to sit on Gencom should be there FOR the members with the best interest of the club and its members at heart. Decisions that need to be made, need to be made timorously so as to serve the best interest of the members. It is my objective to be part of a Gencom that can achieve this in harmony with all departments.
Having joined HHYC in 2010, Eddy was elected to Gen Com in 2015. Holding a Pleasure Vessel Operators Licence Grade 2 and being the owner of a 43' motor boat, Eddy is a typical energetic sports and boating enthusiast who appreciates the desire of Club members to explore and to experience adventure through boating. Eddy is also a motor boat leader and 24hr Charity Dinghy Race Committee Member.
Eddy LO General Committee Member GenCom
As Junior Police Call Honorary President and meeting the younger generation on a regular basis, Eddy wishes to promote boating and the Club in the capacity of a Gen Com member, not only to adults but also to children and join more charity events to promote the Club.
Within six months after leaving the UK for Hong Kong in 1992, I had decided that Hong Kong was the place for me. Over the past 24 years, the Club has been an important part of my family life: my children have grown up here learning how to sail and my son worked as part of the Sail Training Centre team. My wife Karen and I enjoy participating in the Club’s many events.

I have been on the General Committee and the Operations Committee since 2013. Over the past year, I have chaired the Working Group responsible for overseeing the design and construction of the new Club boat. The build is progressing beautifully and we hope to take delivery before the end of the year. Now that we have renewed our Government lease, the Club has a great opportunity to improve our marine facilities with new equipment, immediate repairs and improvements to fixed berths and swing moorings. I believe that my background of thirty years in the aircraft engineering industry, combined with my experience as a powerboat owner, would allow me to assist the Club in the Marine Operations department. I also feel that I could greatly contribute to and act as a liaison for our Member’s concerns and suggestions.

This is an exciting time for the Club as we, the membership, have to make decisions on how to move the Club forward and grow in a way that allows the Club to continue to provide the facilities and services to the members, with as little disruption as possible. I would like to continue representing the members as my role as chairperson of the Sailing Committee and as a voice for you on the General Committee.
I came to Hong Kong in 1982 as an Outward Bound Instructor working on their tall ship Ji Fung. From there I moved on to become a marine yacht surveyor. My specialty was heavy lift work, as well as scrutinising for South China Sea races. In the mid-1980’s I took over the sail training at RHKYC Middle Island and established the monthly Sail Training Programme. In the mid 1990’s I set up Clearwater Bay Children Sailing Association here at Hebe Haven and this was the beginning of the Sail Training Programme we now have here today after the Club took over the training about 10 years ago. I have been involved in all aspects of the 24-hour race since its inception. For the past 10 years I have specialised in Health Safety and Security and am now the Global Head for Maersk Logistics (now called Damco). I resided in Australia for four years from 2009 – 2013, where I was an active member of the Brisbane Coast Guards involved in towage and SAR, before returning to live here in Hong Kong where I met my wife Alma. As the Club grows, and in today’s world we are never far from incidents and issues and I would like to use my skills to build a Health and Safety and Security culture, as well as seeing environmental issues more on the table; to ensure our operations are safe and we are seen to be and are environmentally aware. Lastly, I would like to make this place one that everyone can feel safe and welcomed and a place of relaxation from the pressures we all face in Hong Kong.
I moved to Hong Kong from Canada 11 years ago, and it wasn’t long before I discovered sailing in Sai Kung. Sailing in the area now for over 10 years, a member at Hebe in my 4th year, I am motivated to contribute more to the running and development of the Club. I studied Mechanical Engineering in University, but left the vocation behind to pursue my dream of flying for Hong Kong’s flag carrier. Currently, my ‘day job’ is as a 747 Captain with Cathay Pacific. Sai Kung is now home, and living in close proximity to Pak Sha Wan, I am a frequent and regular user of the clubs marine facilities as well as the club house. Active around the club, I consider members of the Hebe community to be amongst my closest friends.
Adam GLENDINNING General Committee Member GenCom Sustainability
I am a yacht owner, as well as an avid and active racer and I am currently serving on two sub-committees, F&B, as well as Sailibility, and am eager to translate that experience, as well as a passion for sailing onto the General Committee level. I wish to help promote and support cruising, racing, as well as the sail training centre.
A member since 2003, Hebe Haven Yacht Club has become an integral part of my life since I returned to Hong Kong from Canada. I have been in the manufacturing and import/export business (gloves and jet skis) for more than 30 years. I also have more than 15 years of technical expertise in both powerboats and jet skis. My company has also sponsored working gloves to the Club for eight years and running and participated in the annual 24hr Charity Dinghy Race held by the Club as well.
Kam Kuen (John) LO General Committee Member GenCom
In 2015, I decided to be more actively engaged in the operational aspects of the Club and joined the F&B and Operations Committees so as to extend my expertise in the well-being and growth of the Club. In the past year, I have enjoyed being in the subcommittee, providing my two-cents worth having learnt the ropes. I sincerely hope to extend my expertise together with the rest of the committee members in the ongoing growth of the Club and to bring it to new heights.

I have been an active member since joining the Club in 2007. I joined Sailcom as a Committee member in 2012 before being appointed chairperson of the Hebe Have Sailing Centre Committee when the decision was made to separate Big Boat Sailing and Dinghy Sailing into two separate committees mid 2012. I was initially asked to join the General Committee as a representative of the Sailing Centre in late 2012 during a time when the Sailing Centre was undergoing rapid growth.

NEW CLUB BOAT Words Dave Hughes
July 2015 Project begins
November 2015 First site visit
Attention club members—the wait is almost over! The eagerly anticipated arrival of a boat to replace the Fraser Doig is imminent. Dave Hughes gives us the rundown from the initial idea to the fantastic end result—all we need now is a name! A replacement for the long serving Fraser Doig is now very close with our new club boat—a 43-foot. flybridge power catamaran, purpose-built for Hebe Haven. The base model is centred on the 2006 Americas Cup power Cat 6 which was also built by East Asia Composites (EAC). Americas Cup 2013

The working group Finding people to make up the team for the project was plain sailing (pardon the pun). The working group consists of club members with a wonderful blend of skill sets. There’s even an interior designer to add to the wow factor! Richard Lamble of MSES, a marine surveyor, has been tasked with carrying out stage inspections during the whole build process as well as commissioning and licensing of the boat when it arrives in Hong Kong. The project After the idea was born, the wheels started turning in July 2015. We got to look around and get an overview of the EAC factory in Zhuhai, China after our first site visit was arranged in November 2015. The factory is impressive to say the least, with 175 staff working an extraordinary array of machinery in 12,000sqm of operating space. The latest safety extraction systems keep the workers safe and the factory environment clean and you get a sense that everything is highly organised as you walk around. EAC is managed by Paul Scholten and Greg Boiler, both of whom have considerable experience (30 years) in the marine industry. We signed the contract with EAC on the 4 February 2016 and construction of the vessel was underway by March— with regular site visits conducted by the surveyor during construction. Touch wood, so far the reports have been faultless.
machinery is available—however it is costly to retro fit and almost impossible to find a second-hand boat with one already installed. Construction For those of you who aren’t boat building experts—the boat construction falls into these three major sections: the hull, deck and flybridge. The hull and deck moulds were already in existence, and we got a new mould designed for the flybridge. This was approved by the Naval Architects.

Club Committees were a great help—they became engaged in the project by providing their requirements for our new boat. Most of these suggestions have been included with further improvements proposed by EAC. Despite all this, we managed to keep within the budget approved by the GC. We were very lucky to have an interior designer in the Club, Jennifer Chung, who has provided some excellent colour scheme combinations for the galley, heads and salon.
When will it arrive? We are almost there—the planned delivery date is late December 2016 with the commissioning, inclination tests etc., to be carried out at Hebe. This will include the engine suppliers (John Deere) and navigation equipment suppliers (OBMG). Do not despair— they will also provide training to everyone on how to use the very comprehensive navigation equipment after installation!
You can name the new club boat, see p.63.

FEATURES
Why a power Cat? Making a decision to replace the boat was no easy task— especially deciding on what type of boat would make a suitable replacement. The Operations Committee (OpsCom) faced several challenges when considering available options for replacing the Fraser Doig. To begin with, most of the other new builds were over budget. Secondly, all previously owned boats would have to be modified to suit our club needs and likely to incur increased maintenance costs. The third major factor to consider was stability of the vessel under anchor: passive and active stability

Dave Hughes

FOR THE LOVE OF
oceans PART 1
The beginning Words Sandra Snell If I had previously believed that I had a passion for ocean yacht racing, then that love affair has been categorically confirmed. My participation in the Clipper 2015/2016 Round-the-World Race was an experience in complete sensory overload, beginning with the gruelling preparation and ending in total exhilaration and inspiration. In late June 2015, the seed was planted. For many years I had enviously watched professional sailors, both male and female, taking to the oceans of the world to race; and for me it was a dream which was not ever likely to happen at a professional level. I had heard about Clipper, knew of people who had taken part and I had raced here in Hong Kong with a teammate who had circumnavigated the world in a previous Clipper race. Even then, it didn’t cross my personal radar screen until my husband, Nigel, suggested I apply for the 2015/2016 race. Despite initially dismissing it as slightly unrealistic, given work and home commitments; and a race start only about eight weeks away, I admit to taking a peek online to get an idea of the prerequisites required, the training schedule and the race course. Clipper provide options of competing in the full circumnavigation— involving eight race legs around the globe—or any number of (or combination of) race legs. Leg 4 immediately jumped out and grabbed me and didn’t let go! This leg was going to include the annual Sydney to Hobart yacht race. This is considered one of the top three ocean races in the world, alongside the Fastnet and Bermuda races; and had long been on my list of races to complete. Additionally, there was a Roaring Forties/Southern Ocean experience and a long sail up the east coast of Australia from Tasmania to Airlie Beach in the Whitsunday Islands. Three very different race experiences all parcelled up in Leg 4—sold! I was quite aware that the preparation and racing were going to require a much higher level of physical fitness beyond the basics I already had and that ended up being an understatement! I decided I would need to target the biggies—aerobic fitness as well as endurance and strength. As I was quite a late entry, I had to accelerate my training which started with an intensive programme of running, push-ups and weights—all overseen by my coach who also happened to be my husband—what was I thinking? As I was being prodded from behind to run faster up the hills of Sai Kung with the threat of more penalty push-ups at the top, I was definitely not pondering the longer-term benefits. My thoughts and mutterings were distinctly ‘R’ rated and I think there might have been the odd rude hand gesture in there as well. Nigel had clearly read far too many SAS training manuals. However, I did have cause to be extremely grateful when I started my four weeks of practical training on the boat, as the penalty push-ups well and truly paid off.
64 HEBE JEBES • NOV/DEC 2016
I had the choice of completing my mandatory four-week intensive Clipper training programme either in the October chill and grey of the Solent and UK west coast or the October spring sunshine of Sydney Harbour and east coast Australia. Tough decision, but I chose the latter! Those four weeks were my first taste of what was to follow and I did conclude that this would not be for everyone. Firstly, I could see this was going to be a major social experiment. Being confined to a 70-foot long capsule (only half of which was habitable), with between 18 and 20 people from widely diverse backgrounds who you have never met; and whom all have well-ingrained patterns of behaviour—was going to require an enormous degree of patience and tolerance. Add to the mix an extreme level of discomfort, complete lack of privacy, questionable dietary intake, minimal sleep and the need to be focused on safety and racing skills during all waking moments. There was no question that the race itself would require some personal ‘digging deep’ and it didn’t disappoint. Completing a seemingly endless amount of Clipper paperwork was another preparatory challenge I had not really considered. Aside from the arduous application process and interview, there followed medicals, insurance applications and keeping track of specific crew information which seemed to spew from my computer daily. It all felt relentless at the time and was partly due
FEATURES Meeting DaNang
to my late entry. I didn’t have time to research all the boats, their sponsors and skippers in order to submit a personal request to be allocated to a specific boat. While offering no guarantees, Clipper will consider specific requests from individuals who are wanting to race on a boat of their choice. Clipper’s mandate is to crew boats as fairly as possible with an even spread of skill levels, ages and genders. I was allocated to a boat which was sponsored by the city of Da Nang in Vietnam who had taken up the sponsorship to increase their tourism profile. The upshot of this was also the constant supply of the most divine coffee in the world brought to us by Vietnamese ambassadors whenever we were in port. My skipper was to be an Australian lady; another potential challenge for me. I routinely raced with guys and I wondered what this change would be like. Wendy (or Wendo as she was fondly known) was a well-known Sydney sailor with already eight Sydney to Hobart races to her credit and 2015 would be her ninth. I felt this could only be a good thing as Wendo would surely have an enormous amount of local knowledge of east coast Australia sailing, so I had the feeling we may have a good chance in the race of my dreams.
Getting in some study during training, in the company of Ruth, our life size MOB
The challenges of preparation just kept coming and choosing the appropriate gear was no mean feat. I was going to be racing in conditions ranging from bitter cold to roasting hot, which required

considerable planning, especially as weight was restricted and storage space amounted to a minuscule cubbyhole which also needed to accommodate the bag that held the gear! There was an abundance of information on the crew website from past voyagers and subsequently many varying opinions on the effectiveness of the gear they had chosen—did waterproof socks, gloves and hats really work or did they not? Such were the debates. One consistent piece of advice though was the effectiveness of merino wool thermals and that, I can attest, was the most valuable and reliable of all. Go to sleep damp in merino wool thermals and wake up toasty warm and dry, miraculous! Which brings me to sleeping bags. I chose an ocean sleepwear bag which came highly recommended and it didn’t disappoint. It was lined with an amazing polar-fleece type material which also miraculously dried—compliments of the sleep fairies. Crawling into my sleeping bag wet on most occasions made these additions to the kit very valuable. The outer layer of the sleeping bag was waterproof, which was another bonus, as it totally protected me from the frequent spray of ice cold Antarctic water that made its way down the companionway and onto my nearby bunk. If I had been circumnavigating then I would have invested in a dry-suit, which I didn’t. In hindsight, my experience would have been considerably drier and a little less ‘weather challenged’ if I had had a dry-suit for both the Southern Ocean and Sydney/ Hobart races. Clipper issued all crew with a set of branded Henri Lloyd gear, including heavy duty foul weather pants and jacket, along with a lighter weight spray jacket and wind proof jacket, all great quality gear. We needed to personally source any remaining gear. Reflecting on the effectiveness of my foul weather gear though, I have to say that with the exception of a dry-suit, no gear (regardless of quality) would have kept me dry with the continual drenching from waves and rain. My somewhat aged but trusty boots had always kept my feet snug and dry but once again it only took a few wave soakings to render them not so trusty anymore. I did succumb to the marketing hype of waterproof socks and in their defence, they were very effective in the short term, however it wasn’t long before they too were soaked. Again, merino socks as the base layer came to the rescue, with dry feet when I woke up. It was tough to then slide my feet back into cold, sodden wet boots again! Such was the wet feet desperation at one point that I resorted to sliding my feet into plastic bags before putting on my boots. Meeting up with my would-be team mates for the first time in Albany, in the very south west corner of Western Australia, was slightly intimidating. I had not met or trained with any of my

fellow sailors and I was not sure what to expect. Some had already completed the first three legs of the race, London to Rio de Janeiro, Rio to Cape Town and Cape Town to Albany. The latter of which is pronounced ‘Al-bany', by the way. After being chastised on numerous occasions by proud locals for pronouncing it ‘All-bany', I did eventually get it. There were only three new joiners for Leg 4, of which I was one. Understandably, it must be difficult for those who have already bonded as a group and who have faced some tough conditions together to keep an open mind about the inclusion of new crew who they also know nothing about. I felt it was really important to respect this while getting to know people’s backgrounds and sailing ability as quickly as possible. Equally important to me though was having the confidence to assert myself and fill the roles I felt I was capable of achieving and beyond! I went into this race with a set of goals and objectives for the development of sailing skills and personal challenge and I wanted to walk away feeling I had fulfilled those objectives. To be continued…

FEATURES Clipper training yacht, alongside Rushcutter's Bay, Sydney
68 HEBE JEBES • NOV/DEC 2016

Ban the bottle and
USE A BUTT
Words Stu Pryke
Every member can do their bit to help reduce plastic waste and it all starts with swapping from a water bottle to a water butt. As Hebe progresses further towards eliminating single and shortuse plastics, the recent Pak Sha Wan beach clean up—seven beaches in seven hours which is a new summit for the Club— allowed us to trial eight Coleman 12-litre water butts. These are heavy-duty PVC, multiple use (over a thousand cycles) water containers with a top loading lid and a conventional style tap. In a continuation of the trial, I am asking club members to really make a concerted effort to use these containers instead of buying litre/1.5 litre water bottles that invariably see a single use and end up in the Hebe skips. Our landfills and local beaches are littered with Bonaqua, Watson and Evian water bottles and, as we are now well aware, these bottles break down in just over half a millennium to bead size and yep—straight into the food stream— assuming we have any fish left in the oceans by then. We are already seeing Yellowfin tuna synthesising plastics and passing these on, ostensibly, to us. This is real people so I implore you to sign these water butts out. If eight is a low figure, we can increase the number of containers to suit. You can find them behind the garden bar—it’s a chit sign-off and if you lose one, then pick up the tab at cost—they're really versatile. Use them also for white wine, ice instead of bags, iced tea and anything that won't leave a residue or stain. The J80's, race events and even Bahia sailing—there's always room for one of these little guys and at the end of the day, YOU have made a difference. End the single-use plastic era and focus on reuse, recycle and re-think! The ‘last straw’ saw the end to plastic straws, ‘Have you lost the bottle?’ is our next move to lose the single-use plastic bottle so endemic both here and around the Asia basin—we can make a difference!

beaches cleaned that day (plus hiking trails too!)
Sunshine, blue skies, warm weather and bags of energy all came into play on Saturday 24 September at this year’s Clean Pak Sha Wan Day. It was a beautiful day to spend outdoors and 160 community volunteers and club members gave up their free time to benefit the local community at the event to clean up local beaches, raise environmental awareness and instil sustainability values in tomorrow’s sea users (aka kids). The event attracted young and old who were given a safety briefing, rubbish bags, rakes, sieves and wicker baskets before being sent off, after donning PFDs, via ribs to clean up seven beaches around Pak Sha Wan and Port Shelter. Anja also led a mini hike to help clean up the trail, which goes form Millionaire’s Row (near Lion’s Nature Reserve) over to the beach on the other side of Ma Lam Wat (opposite Kiu Tsui).

hours it took to clean seven beaches
Volunteers this year removed a recordamount of rubbish from the beaches: 2.4 tonnes overall. This is equivalent to one and a half cars! Most of the rubbish was made up of recyclable plastics and aluminium cans which were separated, sorted and sent off for recycling.
In one day we estimated that we collected 28,800 plastic bottles and aluminium cans—saving them from going back into the sea and preventing them from entering the food chain. We left those seven beaches free of litter and plastic. Trails The litter doesn’t just end up in the sea—a lot is washed down from hiking trails during heavy rain or blown off the mountains into the sea during strong monsoons and typhoons. Rubbish artwork The kids got a chance to get creative by constructing some amazing pieces of artwork out of recyclables. The children not only got to use their imaginations but went home with a message for mums, dads and caregivers—don’t throw anything away if we can reuse or recycle it.

The green stuff As far as plastics entering the ocean are concerned, roughly 20% comes from ships and offshore platforms, while the majority originates from litter being blown into the sea, picked up by tides on the beach, or intentional dumping of rubbish in the sea. This not only makes our beaches look horrible, it also poses serious threats to animal and human health. Firstly, plastics don't biodegrade quickly, but rather break up into small pieces that are consumed by fish and sea mammals. Eating or getting entangled in plastics is estimated to kill more than 100,000 sea turtles and birds every year. Secondly, even if not directly eaten, plastics contain dangerous chemicals that are slowly released into the waters and the atmosphere. As fish breath to get oxygen from the sea, they also absorb these chemicals which end up further contaminating them. As we catch these fish for food this contamination ends up back in the human food chain. We end up literally eating our own rubbish.

PO TOI O CEREMONY
Sai Kung Hung Shing festival Words CK Chan
HHYC was invited to attend the Po Toi O village event, which was part of Sai Kung’s celebrations for the Hung Shing Festival. The festival is important in local culture, especially for sailors and fisherman. According to legend, worshipped God Hung Shing (God of the South Sea) was highly knowledgeable in astronomy and geography and aided merchants and fishermen with his ability to read the weather and avoid dangers at sea. The proceedings started with a fantastic seafood lunch hosted by the fishing village at the famous Fai Kee Seafood Restaurant. The event was a colourful mixture of dancing dragons and lions as well as opera singers, which delighted the audience from the magnificent temporary stage. Fire crackers and temple visits were also in abundance as villagers gave thanks to Hung Shing for keeping them safe. The event was attended by KC Choi, District Lands Officer, Sai Kung, CK Chan (HHYC Commodore), Lisa Keatley (HHYC GM) and Samantha Carrington and Summer Ng from the HHYC PR & Marketing Team.
CK Chan

Nicole Arnulphy Vice Commodore
After three years working with Sailcom as Rear Commodore of Sailing it was time to hand it over to Bridget who I am sure, together with the best Sailing Committee any Rear Commodore could wish for, will do an amazing job. My new role as Vice Commodore sees me looking at the whole club and enhancing HHYC as a place for families, sailors and staff. With that in mind, and also to preserve our liquor licence, the general committee together with the General Manager are empowering the staff to refuse to serve alcohol to anyone who appears intoxicated. We are also increasingly concerned that staff may be subject to unpleasant behaviour when trying to comply with their duty. Staff have also been instructed to refuse service to persons deemed to be inebriated or whose behaviour is considered to be below the standard expected at the Club. A printed card may be shown to members concerned to convey this message and that they are authorised by management to ask a person(s) to leave the premises. The card reads: “To comply with the Club’s legal duty as a holder of a liquor licence, we regret to advise you that we are unable to continue to serve alcohol to you today. If you have any questions regarding this please refer to the General Manager.” The General Committee ask for the cooperation of all members to uphold the standards of civility, friendship and fun—characteristic of our club. Any person who remonstrates or refuses to comply with such instructions issued by club staff members, General Committee members or Flag Officers will be the subject of a disciplinary hearing by the General Committee and members should be aware that in most cases, this will result in an immediate suspension of some, or all of the membership privileges for that person. Members are also reminded that they will be liable for the behaviour of their guest(s).

Rear Commodore—Operations
I would like to express my appreciation to the members who voted for me as the Rear Commodore—Operations this year. I will do my best to serve in the best interests of the Club. I have received letters from members raising concerns about boats overstaying in the south pontoon, security and illegal mooring. The Operations Committee has discussed organising a member workshop as soon as possible. Starting from October, we will have full-time security on the south pontoon during weekends to remind users to stick to the two-hour limit. If you happen to spot any boats which do not belong to our members please report it to security. We recently had an incident where we had to call the Marine Department to locate a boat owner so they could move their boat. With the completion of boat racks, most of the boats have been put back onto the racks and our car park is back to normal. Just a friendly reminder to our members to make sure they do not park their car in the boatyard without permission from marine staff. Our club is working on a project to accommodate more boats with our existing moorings, and we had a very good meeting with the Marine Department at the end of September who gave us the green light to test a ‘landing platform’ for two boats. The landing platform is under construction in Zhuhai and we expect to start testing in early 2017. Wishing you all a great Christmas and New Year for 2017!

Rear Commodore—Sailing
Having sat on the sailing committee for five years and spending one year on the general committee, I am delighted to be able to serve as your new Rear Commodore Sailing. I really appreciate the excellent job my predecessors, the members sitting on the current sailing committee and the working teams have achieved—all have freely given their time and expertise to support the Club in yacht racing and cruising activities. In the coming year, we will continue to focus on promoting yacht racing and cruising to boat owners and members and encourage them to participate or to volunteer to enjoy the fun of sailing. If you would like to know more about yacht racing and cruising, or want to become a volunteer—please get in touch via email: rcsailing@hhyc.org.hk. My first event as Rear Commodore Sailing was the Sails East Port Shelter Regatta 2016, held on 1 – 2 of October. It was a tremendous success with the highest turnout of boats ever seen for this Regatta. We got 42 boats on the water! Thank you to Eric Tomter, the race officer, and all of the volunteers and staff who took part in this event. Finally, the Sin Fung Winter Saturday Series 2016 has just kicked off. Looking forward to seeing you on the water!

We have finished regular checking of usage of the mooring/pontoon and hardstanding. A friendly reminder that any member replacing his/her existing craft must submit a written application and obtain approval in writing from the Marine office BEFORE the replacement craft is placed on any Club Marine Facility. Members are not allowed to change their craft more than twice in a one year period. Members selling any craft on a Club Swing Mooring, Pontoon Berth or Hardstanding are responsible for notifying the Marine office within seven days of the sale and ensuring that the craft is removed from the Marine facility within two weeks of the transfer of ownership. If the craft is not removed within the two week period the General Committee may take whatever action it considers necessary and any expenses so incurred will be charged to the Member(s) concerned. If any Swing Mooring, Pontoon Berths or Hardstanding space is vacant for one week or longer, the Member to whom the space is allocated must notify the Marine Manager. The Marine Manager, at his sole discretion, may temporarily allocate such vacant Marine facilities to any other Member or to a member of a club with reciprocal rights.
Sampan We would like to take the opportunity to remind all members that The Operations Committee has received numerous complaints regarding the use of the Sampan outside the designated vessel mooring area. The Committee has therefore decided that the Sampan will only take members to the Club, RHKYC and private moorings in the area to the North of the Pak Shan Wan Public Pier. We would like to remind the membership about a regulation in effect since 1 August 2013, which stipulates the sampans cannot take members to or from Shelter Cove Pontoons or to Hong Kong Marina. RHKYC members who wish to go to the RHKYC Pontoons should use the white RHKYC sampans. • Sampan users must sign the usage record. • The sampan operator will ask members or boat crew to show their membership card if needed.
Car park Members will be charged $24 per hour should they not present their membership card on arrival in the car park and they must enter the car park by signing chits. There is no guest parking on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays.
Use of disabled parking spaces To use the disabled parking space please notify the Security Guard at the car park gate. • For disabled persons who need to use the dedicated parking spaces, please inform the security guard at the car park gate. • The security guard will confirm that the vehicle has a Disabled Person’s Parking Permit sticker before opening the parking bollard for members. • When vehicles are leaving the disabled person parking spaces, the security guard or club staff will put the bollard back in place again to prevent other vehicles parking there by mistake.
