MG McGrath in the News SMACNA: Golden Metal Screens Create Stunning Architectural Experience When New York University’s Elmer Holmes Bobst Library opened its doors in 1973, The New York Times called its soaring interior atrium “one of New York’s most spectacular architectural experiences.” Recently, SMACNA contractor M.G. McGrath Inc. of Maplewood, Minn. helped NYU enhance the 150-foot-high library atrium with a spectacular veil of golden metal screens that line the towering hall. The screens were custom designed to retain light, air, and views of the five-story atrium. The design of the screens melds architectural beauty and safety, while complementing the original Philip Johnson and Richard Foster design. Fabricated and installed by M.G. McGrath, the 20-foot-tall perforated aluminum metal enclosures, designed by Joel Sanders Architect, reflect a soft golden light while allowing light to filter in. Resembling rectangular digital pixels, the slender tines on each screen are only four-inches apart. Golden Metal Screens Create Stunning Architectural Experience

Metal Architecture Highlights the Museum of the Moving Image MG McGrath fabricated and installed custom aluminum plate panels for the Museum of the Moving Image in Queens, NY in Conjunction with Leeser Architecture and F.J. Sciame Construction Company. The Museum of the Moving Image is a museum of the art, history, technique, and technology of film, television, and digital media. MG McGraths provided the entire exterior façade of the new 3 story addition. The 15,000 square foot exterior is clad with unique triangle shaped aluminum plate wall panels that give the allusion that they are floating with a contrasting 3” deep reveal system and open joints in the panel system that vary in width that create larger triangle patterns within the façade. The panels have a highly reflective high gloss light blue finish that seems to blend in with the sky as it picks up the reflections of the clouds. Metal Architecture | Museum of the Moving Image MG McGrath Museum of the Moving Image Project Portfolio The new rear façade of the Museum is comprised of a surface pattern of triangles—like those in the main theater, but made in this case out of 1,067 thin aluminum panels, which are mounted on the support structure with open joints, so that every joint is a rain grate. Light blue in color, the panels look razor-sharp but create the impression of a super-light floating skin dematerialized against the sky: another visual reference in the architecture to the infinite thinness of the moving image. The pattern of the panels also brings to mind the lines of wireframe computer drawings. Because the triangular panels must fit together precisely to form the skin, the entire rear façade, which is approximately 200 feet long, is built to a tolerance of 3/16 of an inch.

Florida Polytechnic University | Lakeland, Florida Builders of a glass-sheathed Florida college building—topped by a 250-ft-long skylight shading system with 94 louvered arms that raise and lower to track the sun—say they could not have successfully executed the unusual design without intense consultant-contractor cross-pollination. The $60-million building nearing completion in Lakeland, designed by architect Santiago Calatrava, is on time and on budget thanks to the teamwork, they say. Designed as the signature element of Florida Polytechnic University’s still-emerging campus, the 162,000-sq-ft Innovation, Science and Technology Building (IST) stretched the team’s envelope of experience. “Every corner we turned, there was something that required close attention,” says Joey Ottman, with Alfonso Architects, the project’s Tampa-based architect of record. Corn Palace | Mitchell, South Dakota The World's Only Corn Palace is Mitchell's premier tourist attraction. Some 500,000 tourists come from around the nation each year to see the uniquely designed corn murals. The city's first Corn Palace was built as a way to prove to the world that South Dakota had a healthy agricultural climate. Eight years before the turn of the 20th century -1892- when Mitchell, South Dakota was a small, 12-year-old city of 3,000 inhabitants - the WORLD’S ONLY CORN PALACE was established on the city’s Main Street. -The Corn Palace The Mitchell City Council approved the $7 million renovation and expansion. Phase one will include making changes to the Corn Palace itself, including new light-up domes which will change color, larger murals, and a walk-out balcony. Larger windows are also part of the plan, which will bring more natural light into the building. Phase two involves renovation of the adjoining building which currently serves as Mitchell’s City Hall. A new city hall building is currently in the planning stages. MG McGrath will furnish and install the aluminum exterior decorative turrets and domes as well as decorative metal screen panels.
