20th Century or earlier

Image title: The Reconstructed Ishtar Gate Date: 575 BCE (reconstructed in 1930) Architect: NA Photographer: José Fuste Raga Interesting Aspect: King Nebuchadnezzar II commanded the construction of the Ishtar Gate leading to the inner city of Babylon, in honour of the Babylonian goddess, Ishtar. (Reconstruction displayed in the Pergamon Museum in Berlin). The glazed bricks arranged with bas-relief exhibit symbolic imagery. The blue glaze resembles lapis lazuli – “a blue semi-precious stone”. This Century

Image title: Theatre and Auditorium of Llinars del Vallès, Barcelona. Architect: Álvaro Siza Vieira Date: 2015 Photographer: Fernando Guerra Interesting Aspect: The building is a public commission for a regional cultural facility. Siza experimented with volumes by mixing straight and curved planes, which resulted in an interesting visual of light and shadows. A curved metal roofing caps the auditorium and a brick fly tower that penetrates the roofline creates the theatre’s backdrop. Recent or proposed innovation

Image title: Polybrick 2.0 Architect: Jenny Sabin Studio, Sabin Design Lab, and Cornell University Date: NA Photographer: Jenny Sabin Studio Interesting Aspect: The project explores brick fabrication utilising algorithmic design techniques. The ceramic bricks that are 3D printed and fired have built-in dovetail joints, which means that the built structure is lightweight with no mortar. While it can be produced at low cost, the complex, organic structural system provides strong stability. Source: https://urbannext.net/polybrick-2-0/
