ids are often restless in the heart of winter. Besides the onset of cabin fever due to inclement weather, many months are left in the school year. Count down the minutes until the spring thaw arrives and try these fun things for families to do together in February. ENJOY WINTER ACTIVITIES TOGETHER: Depending on where you live, you may have lots of opportunities to enjoy outdoor winter activities such as sledding, snowshoeing, ice skating, skiing, snowboarding, or simply building snow forts and snow sculptures. If snow and ice are rare in your you’ll want to capitalize on every chance or plan a short getaway to where you can play in the cold.

PLAY INDOORS: Staying in the house doesn’t mean the kids have to park it in front of the TV or video game screen. There are plenty of indoor activities for kids that involve active games, pretend play, and creativity exercises. You can also take the kids on a family fun outing to indoor sports such as bowling, indoor roller rinks, and indoor skating rinks. PLAN A TRIP: Nothing will warm your family up quicker than planning for a special getaway together. Spring break is just a few weeks away, so now’s the perfect time to spend some time brainstorming with your family about where they would like to go when the weather gets warmer. Make vacation planning a family activity, look at all of the fun attractions you can visit online, and take advantage of early bird deals by booking now. VALENTINE’S DAY FUN: Celebrate Valentine’s Day with your children all month long. Create Valentine’s crafts, such as the I Love You photo collage or the I Ruff You foam dog. Plan a Valentine’s Day party, make party supplies with your printer, and play Valentine’s Day-themed party games.

PRESIDENTS’ DAY: Slip in a history lesson on this holiday. Teach kids about Presidents’ Day, the first federal holiday established in honor of an American citizen, with fun activities that teach your children all about this important day. AMERICAN HISTORY MONTH: Speaking of history, February is also American History Month. Find out what happened on this date in history to teach your kids something new today. BLACK HISTORY MONTH: Learn about Harriet Tubman, Martin Luther King, Jr., Rosa Parks and other key people who made a difference. Even younger children can embark on this learning journey through age-appropriate printables and activities. AMERICAN HEART MONTH: Keep your family fit during American Heart Month in February. Teach kids how the heart works, learn about the heart’s anatomy, and gauge your family’s target heart rates. Plan family workout activities to get the recommended amount of physical activity for heart health. Thespruce.com/family-activities-to-enjoy-inFebruary-4134466

F

ebruary, like Vermont, is often associated with lovers. Valentine’s Day is meant to ignite a spark. Well, that spark is appropriate for us to unveil our THEME OF THE YEAR: IGNITE! This year we will unflinchingly IGNITE our passion for, and level of, service, we will IGNITE our business by fueling our collective fire with the right activities and the right mindset. We are even going to IGNITE our social lives by intentionally spending time enjoying one another’s company. So, pack your tinder and get ready! This month we get to spend time celebrating our 2019 achievements and making in-roads to achieving our goals for 2020. I CHALLENGE YOU to do what it takes to get yourself to the next level this year – NINJA, Personal Coaching, and more specifically, the IGNITE conference in Kansas City on April 6,7 and 8th. This is our FIRST ANNUAL conference sponsored by HOMESERVICES COMPANIES. Those of you who have been waiting for a national convention – THIS is our inaugural event! For an investment of $300 (I know – really affordable compared to other national events/conventions) and a few days time you will be inspired and challenged. You will meet and network with agents from our many area sister companies, and you’ll have a great time! So, join me in Kansas City! Mark your calendars and we’ll send out registration information as we near the date.

I hope you have a February filled with love and sparks – let’s IGNITE 2020.

GRATITUDE

A NN OU NCEM EN T

I

t’s our pleasure to announce that AMY DUVAL CARLSON has been named President of HomeServices TITLE. Amy’s legal experience with brokerage, as well as her previous insurance background make her an ideal fit for our title operation.

I mean, what can be so hard to understand? Isn’t Gratitude just a fancy way of saying you are thankful? It happens multiple times every single day, someone opens the door for you, you say “thank you,” (at least I hope you are a person who says “thank you,” I’m assuming we are all coming from a minimal decency standard here) and then we go on our way. That’s it! After all, we’re nice people... we’re Nebraska Nice!

Amy will continue to support our operations as General Counsel. Please help us congratulate Amy as she embarks on this new adventure.

LEMON SHORTBREADS Source | tasteofhome.com/recipes/lemon-shortbreads

INGREDIENTS COOKIE: 1 cup butter, softened

1 teaspoon grated lemon zest

2 teaspoons grated lemon zest

1/2 cup confectioners' sugar

2 cups all-purpose flour

3 tablespoons lemon juice

1/4 cup sugar

GLAZE: 2 cups confectioners' sugar

Colored sugar

1 teaspoon salt

am going to talk about Gratitude the only way I know how, from a seemingly rambling, overly dramatic, deeper than necessary, and nonsensical way. I’ll regret putting this out to the world in the interim but that’s how I roll and will ultimately be happy because I was true to myself. Stay with me, I’ll get there... I promise.

DIRECTIONS 1.

Beat butter, sugars and salt until blended; beat in lemon zest. Gradually beat in flour. Divide dough in half. Shape each into a disk; wrap. Refrigerate 30 minutes. Let dough stand at room temperature 5-10 minutes to soften slightly.

2.

Preheat oven to 325°. Roll each portion of dough between two pieces of waxed paper to 1/4-in. thickness. Cut dough with a floured 1-1/2-in. heart-shaped or other cookie cutter. Place 1 in. apart on lightly greased baking sheets.

3.

Bake until bottoms are lightly browned, 7-10 minutes. Remove to wire racks to cool completely.

4.

For glaze, mix confectioners' sugar, lemon peel and lemon juice until smooth; spread over cookies. Sprinkle with colored sugar.

Let me propose that Gratitude is something much more than that. Sure, you can go through life saying “thank you” like you are up-sizing an extra value meal or choosing between paper or plastic at the grocery store, or dutifully upholding the obligation of our State slogan, but that’s not really Gratitude, that’s just being polite. Real Gratitude involves some real awareness of the actions of others. Gratitude isn’t just about being thankful, it is about recognizing the sacrifice someone else has made for you. That means we have to get outside the Tropical Storm Jason in our heads, the cadence of “me, me, me, me...” and start really seeing each other. I referenced the act of opening a door for someone above. A simple thing. Let’s over-analyze that! There you are, walking up to said door carrying the weight of your life, your decisions, your hopes and dreams, your monthly Netflix payment, your parrot’s birthday party planning (tropical theme or something less cliche?), the fact that the bathroom faucet combined with your HVAC sounds like your ex’s breathing patterns haunting you from 1998 like a ghost, you are LATE, and there just has to be either a rock, spider or Lego in your shoe. I could go on about the amalgamation of prebiotic soup you carry with you in your fanny pack of life. We are all amazing, unique, individual people. But there you are, approaching a door that you HAVE to open if

4 | HSNE SCOOP

you are to experience the benefits residing on the other side. AND a stranger with no horse in your race with their own emblematic carry on luggage, opens the door for YOU, granting YOU a level of transitional ease. Make no mistake, they are not an illusion. They were b-lining on their own specific path too, saw you, and stopped to give you something so seemingly small and ordinary; A little act of kindness. A real “human” moment. An exchange of humanity. Someone saying with a simple action, “I see you and I want to do this nice thing for you to make your life better. You are not alone, brother!” “Thank you!” you say. In you go, on with your day. Do you even really care that they kindly opened the door for you? Relax, I’m not your therapist. I told you I’d over-analyze this. Let me be first to acknowledge that opening a door is a small thing, some might even call it trivial. I hope you see this isn’t just about opening physical doors. It’s about opening a lot of meta doors as well. It’s about shifting your thinking and elevating from niceties into gratitudinal zen. This means you’ll need to put yourself into the other person’s Crocs and truly appreciate that the person went out of their way, no matter how simple or complicated, to benefit you. You, this person that exists and grew up in Beatrice and has traveled so far to get to this particular crossroads, on this important quest to grab a Kit Kat and a Diet Dr. Pepper, and are aided by the kindness of a stranger. Saved from potentially, awkwardly, botching the Push/Pull conundrum. We have a chance to make the world a kinder, better place. Every single day and in the simplest of ways we have a choice. I’m not asking you to create super awkward moments in gas station doorways, (still say “thank you!”), I’m asking you to see and recognize those around you when they do something that moves our jobs, our lives, our relationships, forward. You have to let them know that you see them. You have to let them know you noticed. You have to let them know you appreciate it. That’s Gratitude.
