(McAllen, Texas)-The Progreso High School Red Ants Cross-Country will be making its third straight UIL State 4A Cross-Country Championship appearance when they travel north to Round Rock, Texas with hopes of bringing home its first-ever team title on Saturday. The Red Ants, coached by Ivan Gonzalez is thrilled with the opportunity of making three straight appearances. “I’m so proud of this team. Last year, our team came up short of winning the state title and we had to settle for second place overall,” says Gonzalez. Also making the trip in Class 4A are two teams from La Feria High School. Both boys and girls teams qualified and the Lions girls team is set to run at 1:20 p.m. this Saturday at OLD Settlers Park in Round Rock
followed by the boys teams at 1:50 p.m. Both girls and boys teams will be vying for a state title. The La Feria HS teams are the only high school from the Rio Grande Valley that qualified by boys and girls teams. In 2017, Sundown HS from Class 2A swept both titles in the girls and boys events. Others qualifying in Class 4A are Jasmine Rangel from Rio Hondo HS and Kaelynn Gonzalez from Zapata HS. In Class 3A, Brownsville Frontier Prep Academy will making its second straight UIL State 3A appearance. Frontier Prep finished 15th overall in 2017 but they return a core of runners with plenty of experience. Six runners returns from last year’s team. Victor Leos led the team with his best finish in 2017 with a time of 15:42.19. Other qualifiers from
Frontier are Irving Chavira, Juan Franco, Christian Lopez, Jose Mendieta, Rafael Torres, and Alex Trujillo. Also qualifying from Class 3A is Ryan Sanchez from Lyford HS. In Class 2A, Robbie Sue Espericueta from La Villa HS and Jackie Mendez from Lasara HS are the only two qualifiers from the Rio Grande Valley. No other 2A boys teams or individuals qualified. Running in Class 5A are the Edcouch-Elsa HS Girls Cross-Country team. Only one senior makes up this Lady Jacket squad led by Natali Mireles. Three sophomores and two freshmen will try to stay together top score points and win a possible state title. Haley Villalpando is the only junior runner on the team. Also competing at the State 5A Championships is La Joya Palmview HS senior Bailey
Villalon and Soledad Cruz from Mercedes HS. In Boys, three Edcouch-Elsa members will join their girls pack with Kristian Martinez, Domink Medrano, and Albino Rodriguez. Two other runners from Mercedes will be headed to state with Julian Fuentes and Guadalupe Reyes, along with returning state runner, Cruz Gomez from PSJA Memorial HS followed by Alex Canales from Rio Grande City. Individual runners from Class 6A includes Andrea De La Rosa from Brownsville Rivera, Jesus Mora and Jorge Ponce from Donna North HS, Marco Castro from Mission, and Freddy Calvillo from LJ Juarez-Lincoln HS. In team, the McAllen Memorial HS Boys Cross-Country squad will be the only Rio Grande Valley 6A team to compete in Class 6A this weekend.
