during his remote segment, he added, I’m Billy Santiago with Tddave, and from then on, it stuck.” laughs Amador. In twenty-five years, the popular-sportswriter looks back at players he has covered throughout his career, that have made it to the collegiate and professional level of sports. It was NFL football players like Koy Detmer (Mission HS), Roberto Garza (Rio Hondo HS), and college players like Trevor Speights (McAllen Memorial), along with Major League Baseball players Gerardo Reyes from Hidalgo High School, now with the Seattle Mariners joining Sharyland’s Jaime Garcia (Cardinals) and Angel Ibanez (Astros), La Joya’s Mickey Pena (Red Sox),
La Joya Juarez-Lincoln’s RJ Alaniz (Astros), and Brownsville Porter’s Henry Garcia (Diamondbacks). On the links, golfers like PGA pro, Abraham Ancer, keeps Amador smiling each time he thinks about all those great moments in high school sports. In college sports, the fourth leading rusher in Texas, Trevor Speights is now entering his senior season with Stanford University while Mission Veterans Memorial High School graduate, Landry Gilpin will attend Division II Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas this fall. Gilpin was named the 2018 TSWA Football Player of the Year in Class 5A. High School Sports Magazine first made its debut

in 1994, the same year, that Port Isabel High School head football coach Tony Villarreal was setting his marks as a young high school coach. In 1994, David “Tddave” Amador followed Villarreal and his Tarpons to the UIL State 3A Football Semifinals, where the Tarpons played Sealy High School at Texas A&I Kingsville Stadium. “David has been a great friend and sportswriter to myself and family. He loves sports and has made a difference in South Texas,” says Villarreal. At Rio Hondo High School, HSSM featured Roberto Garza in a photo holding a discus and shot put as a senior. “He was very athletic and big,” says Amador. “I interviewed Roberto at a football camp he hosted at Rio Hondo High School after his Super Bowl appearance in 2007. He had a dream. Roberto wanted to play football. He wanted to play in the NFL. On February 4, 2007, Roberto was at Dolphin Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida with his NFL team, the Chicago Bears (13-3) playing in his first Super Bowl XLI against the Indianapolis Colts (12-4). On the sidelines, Bruce Bush was remarkable to watch on Friday nights. “He was calmed, cool, and collected. He was always thinking. It was that infectious smile that kept them referees on their toes,” says Amador. Bush coached for 34 seasons and posted an impressive 272-111-8 win-loss record with head coaching jobs in Dimmitt, Livingston, PSJA, Alice, Gregory-Portland, Donna, San Marcos, and PSJA North. Texas High School Coaches Association’s Hall of Honor. Another player who shined in high school was Sharyland High School golfer, Abraham Ancer. On the 18th hole, Amador walked with the senior golfer, Ancer during the district championships in 2010 and told Ancer to keep smiling. “That smile is worth a million dollars,” he told Ancer. “Smile when you talk to the media. We like athletes who smile.” Ancer went on to star at Odessa Junior College and was named NJCAA Player of the Year. He attended University of Oklahoma and became an All-American. Today, he is ranked No. 67 in the world, with more than $3,000,000 dollars in career earning. He has since played in the British Open, U.S.

Open, Players Championships, PGA Championships, in his early career at 28-years-old. “Abraham worked hard as an athlete and was committed to play golf,” says Amador. After twenty-five years of sports writing, Amador still remembers who has influenced him the most as a journalist. “The late Robert Vela and Tony Villarreal are real coaches with a passion for coaching athletes and watching them succeed after they graduate,” added Amador. Both head football coaches led their teams to the University Interscholastic League State Football Semifinals in 1994 and 1999. In 1994, Villarreal told his team that they nothing to be “ashamed of” after their loss to Sealy. “I’m proud of you all,” Villarreal told his team. The Edinburg Bobcats (10-4) advanced to the Class 5A Semifinals in 1999 with Clarence Cruz as the quarterback against Aldine Eisenhower. The game was played in San Antonio with more than 10,000 fans in attendance. Vela did all he could before losing 55-14. “You never gave up,” Vela told his team. Amador still has all the energy to continue writing and photographing sports. “I have had the pleasure of interviewing coaches like these two men, for the love of the game, and for the love of sports, writing their stories,” says Amador. “Stories are created by each athlete and coach. High School Sports Magazine is about the coach and athlete. The best part of every game, is the final score.”

(San Benito, Texas)-Playing non-conference teams like the three-time UIL State Champions, Midland Lee Rebels from District 2-6A is what makes the 32-6A San Benito Greyhounds one of the toughest teams in South Texas year and the end result, a third round playoff bid in the Class 6A Division I Regional finals against 6A State-ranked No.6 Converse Judson in 2018. Despite their 69-18 loss to the Rockets, head coach Dan Gomez was pleased and proud of his team. “We played our best and had a great season,” said Gomez. “Next year, we will do it again.” The Greyhounds will face six straight opponents with plenty of playoff history and if the Greyhounds can pick up some wins against non-district opponents Corpus Christi Calallen, Victoria West, PSJA, Laredo United, and Midland Lee, then they will open District 32-6A against Harlingen at Boggus Stadium on October 11th. San Benito will face new challenges in 2019 as they return only four starters on both offense and defense. Players to watch are Jermaine Corbin (6’2 190lbs) all-purpose player along with Dominick Sanchez, a six-foot three offensive linemen at 290lbs. Other players expected to step in and lead the defense are OLB

(Brownsville, Texas)-The Brownsville Hanna High School Eagles advanced to the UIL State 6A Division II Regional finals last season for the first time under head coach Mark Guess. The game was played before 10,000 fans at the Alamodome in San Anto-
nio against Brandeis High School. The Eagles lost 33-32 on four extra-point missed opportunities. Returning this season are quarterback, Victor Campos (1,539 yards passing 17 TDs 472 yards rushing) and his targets will be WR Ernesto Mendoza (315 yards) and
Josiah Meyers (6’1 185lbs). On defense, 6A All-State DE Brandon Esteves returns after leading his team with 13 quarterback sacks last season. With only Esteves returning on defense, the Eagles will have to figure out a way to keep the momentum headed in the right

Looking to Rebuild
(Brownsville, Texas)-After four seasons, 2-38 overall record, the Rivera Raiders replaced longtime head football coach Tom Chavez with Alberto Leal. The new-look Brownsville Rivera Raiders will kickoff its season against Brownville Veterans Memorial on August 30th at Sams Stadium. Hopefully, the Raiders will end their 19-game losing streak by defeating the Chargers. Leading the Raiders will be the return of seven starters on offense and six on
defense. The first task for Leal is finding a quarterback to lead his team. Two prospects, Ariel Gonzalez (6’2) and junior Andres Perez (5’10) will both compete for the position. OL Marcus Nash (6’3) will lead the line along with OL Juan Castillo (6’1), WR Elian Hernandez (6’2), RB Mariano Mendez (6’0), and TE Jorge Ybarra (6’1). On defense, DT Mariano Mendez, DB Esteban Cruz, LB Angel Robels, and DL George Perez return to give the Raiders plenty of experi-
ence on Friday nights. The Raiders were outscored 396-152 in 2018 with lopsided losses to San Benito (71-14), Harlingen (38-7), Los Fresnos (37-7), Hanna (48-0), and Brownsville Veterans 50-13. “We are new team with a new attitude,” says Leal. The Raiders will play five non-district games, all against playoff teams from 2018. “We are better team from 2018,” says Hernandez. “We have the talent on this team to wins games this season.” The Raiders will

(Harlingen, Texas)-The glory years. The Harlingen Cardinals went 37-3 from 2009-2011, including a State 5A Quarterfinals appearance against San Antonio Madison. The game was played at Boggus Stadium before a sellout crowd. The Cards lost that night, 42-27. Since then, head coach Manny Gomez has watched his teams go 5-5, 5-5 for the
past two seasons, including a four-game losing streak in 2018. Four straight losses to Weslaco East (7-0), Midland (51-31), San Benito (42-28), and Brownsville Hanna (44-27), just did not make any sense. Gomez is not use to losing, period. “We will be much improved and the Cardinal spirit never dies,” says the 12-year Cardinal head coach. The Car-
dinals return four starters on offense and defense. On offense, the Cardinals will be led by quarterback Jaime Galvan (1,995 yards passing 18 TDs 520 yards rushing), Jesus Gonzalez (123 yards rushing), and Rayden Berry (175 yards rushing). On the line, OL Jerry Gonzalez, OL Hayden Mann, and TE Ryan Elizondo could all make an impact in 2019.

Looking for Playoff Bid (Los Fresnos, Texas)-Head coach Patrick Brown will begin his fourth season with the Los Fresnos Falcons and how quickly, things change overtime. Brown, in his first season, led the Falcons to the UIL State 6A Regional finals in 2016 and he would repeat it again in 2017. The Falcons lost to 25-6A Austin Lake Travis twice, in the third round in 2016 and 2017. In 2018, the Falcons posted their worst season since 2004 with a 3-7 record. With the new UIL realignments in 2018, District 32-6A became a six-team district, which meant that only five games would be played in district competition. This sent teams scrambling for non-district games. In District 32-6A, all teams needed five non-district games to play. Los Fresnos
added El Paso Montwood from District 1-6A followed by District 12-5A DI Austin LBJ, and four-time state champions, Odessa Permian
from District 2-6A. The Falcons went 1-2 against those teams last year, including a 56-0 loss to the Permian Panthers. The Falcons

Another Playoff Run? (Edinburg, Texas)-Three years ago, J.J. Leija was named as the new head football coach for the Edinburg Bobcats, the team he once played for during his high school years. Leija took over a shambled football program that suffered for four seasons with 1-9, 2-8, 2-8, 3-7 overall records from 2012-2015, mainly due to the emergence of a new high school, Robert Vela. The Bobcats have made the playoffs ever since
Leija took over in 2016 with 7-4, 6-5, 7-4 records. All UIL playoff appearances have ended with first round losses. Now, in his fourth season, Leija will lead the Bobcats with only four starters on

(Edinburg, Texas)-In two seasons, the Edinburg Economedes Jaguars have fallen short of making the UIL State 6A playoffs with 4-6 records in 2017 and 2018. Looking to Improve
(Edinburg, Texas)-In his first season as a head football coach, Damian Gonzalez watched his Edinburg North (2-8) football program take a dive
to its worst record since 2010, when the Cougars ended their season at 1-9 under then-head coach Roy Garza. “That was tough, but, we have
come together as a group in 2019,” says Gonzalez. The Cougars return six lettermen on offense and seven on defense. Players to
watch are RB Jacob Peralez, RB George Espinoza, RB Miguel Contreras, and projected QB Michael Rodriguez (5’9 155lbs).
Last year, the Cougars struggled on offense, scoring only 128 points in ten games and were held to less than a touchdown per night in six games played.

(McAllen, Texas)-Anytime you lose your starting quarterback during the season to injury, things could get pretty ugly. Senior QB Jonas Ortiz returns after suffering an ankle injury towards the end of the 2018 season, the end result was a 1-4 finish in the last five games, missing the playoffs for the first time, under head coach Robert Flores. Still, Flores remains opti-
mistic coming into 2019 season. Then it happened again. Back-up QB James Gamez suffered an ankle fracture a few weeks ago. He stepped in when Ortiz went down. The “jet-sweep, pitch foward, pass offense” Warriors will return with hopes of getting back into the playoffs. Gamez has healed since. In another set back, the Warriors will be without their talented 6’3 WR, Ruben Salinas (714 yards),
who transferred to Michigan after the death of his father last year. Then, the Warriors lost another key player, Rigo Davila (6’5 280 OL), who transferred to McAllen Memorial High this past spring.

(La Joya, Texas)-The La Joya Coyotes were probably the best 6-4 team that did not make the UIL State 6A playoffs in 2018. In the end, District 30-6A losses to McAllen Nikki Rowe (35-31) in overtime and
Mission 21-14, knocked the Coyotes out the playoffs. Head coach Reuben Farias will lead his team of six starters back on offense, including senior 6A All-State fullback, Eddie Villar-
real (career 3,109 yards rushing) along with five starters back on defense. The Coyotes will be led by LB Jose Bermea, LB Daniel Salinas, and DB Nelson Camero. Farias will have the task of finding a new
quarterback this season. He will be the key to leading this run-rich offense. The Coyotes rushed for 2,960 yards and passed for a low, 231 yards. Prospects include QB George Speedron and Alejandro
Hernandez. The Coyotes will kickoff their season against rivals, Palmview on August 30th followed by Roma HS on September 6th. They end their non-district schedule at home against Sharyland.

Has High Hopes for 2019
(Mission, Texas)-The Eagles have plenty to cheer about this season when head coach, Koy Detmer leads his team out of that inflatable Eagle tunnel on Friday night against the Mission Veterans Memorial Patriots. Kickoff is set for August 30th at 7:30 p.m. Tom Landry Hall of Fame Stadium. Detmer, after three seasons, led his team to the UIL State 6A playoffs after ending their 30-6A season with wins over McAllen Nikki Rowe (38-7), PSJA (24-7), and La
Joya (21-14). This year, with eight starters back
on offense, the Eagles could be in the hunt for
a district title. Returning are QB Jeremy Duran
1,475 yards passing, 5’11 185lbs, RB Horacio Moronta 6’0 200lbs 1,137 yards rushing, TE Rey Garcia 6’3 245lbs, will be the bulk of their success in 2019. Defensively, the Eagles allowed 197 total points scored in 2018.

Ready to Raid 30-6A (Pharr, Texas)-PSJA North head football coach Marcus Kaufmann smiled, as he held on to his first Class 6A Bi-District Championship title in Division I, after defeating 29-6A Laredo United South in last season’s 25-17 win at PSJA Stadium on November 17th. The Raiders finished third in District 30-6A with a 5-2 record with losses to PSJA (10-7) and McAllen Memorial (42-21). In the playoffs, after the first round, the Raiders stood alone, as the only 30-6A team left standing. “This is amazing,” said Kaufmann. “We are the only team from our district still in the playoffs.” In the second round, more drama. The 32-6A runner-ups, San Benito Greyhounds came to PSJA Stadium on November 23rd, looking for a win. The Raiders never gave up. It would take three over-times in the Class 6A Division I area finals, for either team, to determine which team would advance to the prestigious third round. “We were so close,” said Kaufmann. “This game could have gone either way and these are the games I love playing in the most. Our hats off to San Benito.” The Greyhounds won 43-35 in 3OT. That was last year. The Raiders could be much better in 2019. As a matter of fact, they could win it all in 30-6A. The Raiders return two of the best players on defense that were Class 6A All-State selections from 2018. Defensive end, Aaron Alvarez and defensive back, Seven Sanchez. Yes, Seven also wears the No.7 on Friday nights too. “Its my number, it’s my name,” smiles the senior returner. On offense, the Raiders return all-district 6’3 190lbs quarterback, Iziaah Rangel (1,763 yards passing, 1,336 yards rushing) along with sophomore running back Issac Gonzalez (935 rushing 12 Tds). Both players will be the nucleus for the Raiders. Rangel will also look to wide-receivers John Garza (322 yards 11.5 avg) and Rolando Coronado (329 yards 17.3 avg per catch). Last season, the Raiders averaged 262 yards on the ground and 146 yards passing. Rangel is considered a dual threat quarterback. He has the breakaway, read-option speed. Defensively? The Raiders were pretty good in 2018. They recorded 48 sacks and seven interceptions. They also averaged 102 tackles per game. Players to watch are Micah Lopez (117 total tackles), Alter Lugo (35 tackles), Johnathon Arias, and kicker/punter, Jose Alvarez. The Raiders will kick off their season against PSJA Memorial on August 30th at PSJA Stadium and will play host to Harlingen South on September 6th and will end their pre-season schedule on the road at Weslaco on September 13th. “We are looking forward to this season,” says Kaufmann.

Another Deep Playoff Possible? (Mission, Texas)-Patriots Reloaded. That’s what happens when you play for a traditional, rich, football program like the Mission Veterans Memorial Patriots and head coach, Dave Gilpin. Ever since Gilpin took over coaching duties in 2009, he has led the Pats to nine playoff appearances, along with one State 5A Division I Quarterfinals in 2018. The Patriots have played an at least 12 games every season since 2014 going 8-4, 8-4, 8-5, 10-2, 12-2, and Gilpin says, “We could be even better in 2019.” Call him high strung, call him whatever you may want, Gilpin is a winner. The Pats return 43 lettermen with only four starters back on offense and three on defense?
Reloaded? “We build football programs, “says Gilpin. “Every season our freshmen and junior varsity programs are successful and when we move these players up, they are ready to play Patriot football.” In 2016, the Patriots went three rounds deep before losing to Dripping Springs 69-35; then in 2017, the Patriots lost to Flour Bluff in the area playoffs, and in 2018, the Patriots made history. They played in December at the Alamodome in San Antonio. “Can you believe this,” Gilpin told HSSM. “We are playing in December and it’s the second week!” The Patriots lost that day to Converse Wagner 54-21 and the Patriots history-making season was over.
The Patriots return 5A AllState WR AJ Gonzaque (6’1 junior 1,493 yards), WR Mikey Garcia (535 yards 9 TDs), and RB Danny Cantu. At quarterback? “We have Ricky Reyna,” says Gilpin. Only a sophomore, he will take over an offense that scored 650 points in one season or 91 touchdowns. Defensively, with only three starters back, DB Mike Gonzalez, LB Mike Rodriguez, and LB Jesse Gonzalez will have to make up the 40 quarterback sacks the Patriots succeeded with in 2018. Ten teams will compete for the District 16-5A DI title with defending champions, Patriots looking to repeat in 2019. “We will repeat,” says Gilpin. “It’s going to be exciting.”

Chase Begins for the 16-5A DI Title (Brownsville, Texas)The Chargers will begin their chase for the District 16-5A DI title in 2019 under head coach, David Cantu. Ten teams make up this district and with only one non-district game on schedule, every team will need to be ready to play on Week Two. “We need to be ready every
week. It’s a long season and every game counts,” says Cantu. On offense, the Chargers return six key players from its Class 5A DI Bi-District finalist team. The Chargers will run the ball behind starting senior quarterback Liam Longoria (1,410 passing yards 14 TDs; 350 yards rushing 14 TDs)
along with returning running backs Lupe Moran (371 yards rushing), Mauricio Garza (611 yards 7TDs), and sophomore Jose Moreno (244 yards). Three more players to watch will be senior WR Elijah Masten (714 yards 56 catches), WR Damian Maldonado (550 yards 31 catches), and TE Da-

(Brownsville, Tx)Head coach Carlos Uresti enters another season with the Brownsville Porter Cowboys in District 16-5A Division I. Last year, the Cowboys finished dead last with an 0-9 record in the newly aligned ten-team district. Junior quarterback Kevin Garcia enters his third season as the starter with

(Brownsville, Tx)First-year head football coach, Armando Gutierrez made his way to South Texas, all the way from the Dallas-area, to become the Lopez High School Lobos new leader in 2018. The end result? A frustrating 2-8 season. “We played some good games and lost several games that we should have won,” says
Gutierrez. The Lobos started its 2018 campaign with a win over McAllen 26-14, but tight District 16-5A DI losses to Rio Grande City (26-21), Donna (17-14), La Joya Palmview (29-26), and PSJA Memorial (31-28) hinder the Lobos quest for a playoff berth with a 1-8 finish in district play.
Hopefully, 2019 will not repeat another 2018 set
back. Returning are 6’3 QB Jose Cruz (1,108 yards
passing 9TDs) along with OL Santiago Castillo
(6’2 300lbs), WR Xavier Vasquez (5’10 170lbs), RB Luis Barrera (5’9 245lbs), and WR Jesus Serrata. The Lobos will play host to the McAllen Bulldogs on Saturday, August 31st.

(Donna, Texas)Seventh-year head coach Ramiro Leal would love to end the Redskin’s threeyear playoff drought in 2019. Last year, the Redskins were probably the best 6-4 team overall, but a 5-4 record kept them out the playoffs again. “We are working hard and we had our chances last year and fell short,” says Leal. The Redskins lost to Pace (17-9), Brownsville Veterans (9-6),
Rio Grande City (23-21), and PSJA Memorial 17-14 in close battles. “Those losses were tough,” says Leal. Returning in 2019, Leal hopes that experience will be the key to their success with eight starters back on offense, including dual-threat quarterback, Avery Bowen (5’10 185lbs) and linemen Eduardo Rosas (6’5 335lbs), and Oscar Sandoval (6’6 260lbs). (Mission, Tx)-In case many fans are wondering about the Sharyland Rattlers in 2019, don’t worry, 34 returning lettermen will find a way to defend their district title in 2019. Head coach Ron Adame enters his eighth season with an impressive 67-20 winloss record. Adame has led the Rattlers to eight straight playoff appearances with
three third round bids in Class 5A. The Rattlers are rich in tradition and they will be reloaded, despite having two starters back on offense and three on defense. “We will be competitive,” says Adame. “It’s a tough district.” The Rattlers (8-4, 6-0) swept through District 16-5A DII last season and lost in the area finals in
2OT to Brenham 4235. “We almost had them”, says Adame. Now, the Rattlers will have to find a replacement at quarterback from a team that averaged 29.5 ppg and on defense, with only four starters back, allowing their opponents 21.0 ppg, well, things could look a bit challenging for Adame and his staff. Players to watch are
QB Ben Valdiva (6’0 175lbs), RB Andres Bonilla, WR Luis Gonzalez, RB Javier Trevino, LB Santino Pascual, and DB Sebastian Hinojosa. The Rattlers will face Brownsville Pace on Aug. 29th at Sams Stadium followed by McAllen Memorial (9/6), at La Joya (9/13), and Hanna on September 20th, all in non-district play.

(Hidalgo, Texas)-Head coach Monty Stumbaugh is excited about the 2019 season because he feels that his Pirates are finally buying into the football program and it all starts with strength and conditioning. “I’m real proud with how this team has come together in the off season,’ says Stumbaugh. The Pirates will be loaded and talented, with plenty of players that have matured through the last three seasons. Eight starters return on offense and seven on defense from a team that finished 2-8, 0-4 in 2018. “We will make the playoffs,” says Stumbaugh.

UIL Games Break
The Bomb! The Catch! As time expired, WR AJ Carter from Galena Park North Shore HS makes the 45-yard game-winning catch in the endzone over Duncanville H.S. 41-36 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. (HSSMIMages/Special)
(Arlington, Texas)-One of the largest crowds in Texas high school football state history watched University Interscholastic League’s Class 6A Division II state championship game between Longview and Beaumont West Brook at the Dallas Cowboys’ AT&T Stadium in 2018. The announced attendance was 48,421 for the second game of Saturday’s triple-header. Saturday’s final game - the much anticipated showdown of nationally ranked teams - No. 5 Duncanville vs. No. 6 Galena Park North Shore - drew a crowd of 42,363. And fans did get their ticket’s worth too! By the time Longview’s 35-34 victory
Page 56
concluded Saturday night, the first three levels at AT&T Stadium were completely packed. The attendance figure for Longview’s win was the fourth-largest on record in state history, trailing the 2013 Allen vs. Pearland state final (54,347), the 2014 Allen vs. Cypress Ranch state title game (52,308) and the 1977 Plano vs. Port Neches-Groves state championship game (49,953). Those two Allen games were played at AT&T Stadium, and the Plano game was at Texas Stadium in Irving. Nine of the 10 largest crowds in state history have now come from games played at stadiums in the Dallas-Fort
ks Record Worth area, with the only exception being the 1968 Houston Washington vs. Galveston game that drew 45,000 at Rice Stadium in Houston. Again, the UIL will bring the games back to AT&T Stadium, and hopefully, after signing a two-year contract in 2018, the UIL will opt to keep the games at AT&T Stadium. AT&T hosted the state finals from 2011 to 2014, and then moved the games to NRG Stadium in Houston.

For Great Seasons (Monte Alto, Tx)-New head coach Robert Meza takes over the Blue Devils football program with seven offensive starters back on offense after finishing in sixth place in 2018. The Blue Devils return Joseph Cano (650 yards rushing) along with FB Koby Limon. Last year the Blue Devils, with an enrollment of 271, scored only 70 points on offense, while allowing 336 points scored in ten games in District 16-3A DII. Slipping into fourth place in 2018 were the Santa Rosa Warriors. Making the playoffs under head coach Hector Ayala proved to keep the Warriors headed in the right direction in 2019 after Class 3A DII loss to Poth 35-14 in the bi-district championships in 2018. Players to watch are six starters on both offense and defense. The Warriors will be young at key positions, but they will also be experienced. Quarterback Resse Lara will be the leader on the team along with OL Adam Cavazos, WR Mike Bermea, RB Rene Flores, and WR R.J. Vera. Also listed at QB is Jose Ruiz. Cards, Coogs Looking for Playoffs
(La Villa, Texas)-The La Villa Cardinals enjoyed their 2018 season under head coach Danny Perez going two rounds deep in the UIL State 2A Division II playoffs before losing to Granger HS 40-36. “We could have won that game,” says Perez. “It was close.” The Cards return 26 lettermen in this 2A high school enrollment of less than 200 students. Players to watch are probable QB Sebastian Lopez along with WR Manuel Solis, WR Chris Rivera, and RB Christian Ortiz. The Cards will open against Progreso on August 30th. A few miles down south, Santa Maria HS will enjoy their newly built high school and hopefully, the Cougars will enjoy another playoff season. The Cougars play in District 16-2A Division I and new head coach Israel Gracia takes over a football program that qualified for the State 2A Division I playoffs, losing to Shiner 76-0 in bi-district playoffs. Seventeen players return with five on offense and nine back on defense.
