McAllen
(McAllen, Tx)-The McAllen Bulldogs will be looking for a fifth playoff appearance in six years as they open under head coach Kevin Brewer. The Bulldogs six-year leader is excited about the new season and he is also high on his defense. He feels that their Bulldog defense will be the key to their success in 2018. On defense, linebackers Matthew Ramos (6’0 190lbs), Jordan Lopez (6’0 200lbs), Trace Gagne (5’10 185lbs), will be the threesome to watch along with defensive linemen Malachi Dames, Mason Brewer, and Sebastian Buitron. Offensively, the McAllen Bulldogs will run and pass. At quarterback, junior Bryan Garza (5’7” 160lbs) will get his starting opportunity with junior, Robert Amador (6’2 210lbs) as the back-up. Also looking for playing time will be senior QB Mikey Moore (6’2 190lbs). At running back, junior Octavian Lewis (5’9 180lbs) will be the “go-to-rb” along with WR Anthony Marroquin (5’10 175lbs), Aldo Morin (5’10 180lbs), Sergio Villarreal (6’0 185lbs), TE Ed Castillo (6’2 220lbs), and Jackson Helmcamp (6’1 185lbs). “We are a young team with plenty of experience from last year,” says Brewer. “I’m excited about this squad and we have high expectations in 2018.”

Pre-Season Players to Watch
(La Joya, Tx)-The La Joya Juarez-Lincoln Huskies were already making plans to compete in the 2017 UIL playoffs, but, in the end, anything could happen, and it did happen. The McAllen Bulldogs spoiled their playoff hopes with a seasonending win over Mission. The Huskies finished with 6-4, 3-3 record, tied for fourth place. Head coach Tomas Garcia says his team will be ready for 2018 as they open their
season against Rio Hondo, Sharyland Pioneer, and Edinburg, all playoff teams from 2017. “This will be challenging for our team as we prepare for our District 30-6A opener against McAllen Nikki Rowe on October 5th,” adds Garcia. Returning for the Huskies are quarterback Efren Martinez (5’10 175lbs), TE Jacob Lara (6’4 215lbs), WR Manny Briseno, WR Joe Martinez, WR Fernando Buenrostro, and WR Alan
Rodriguez. The Huskies could surprise teams in 30-6A and with the new realignments, which includes PSJA North and PSJA, this district will be up for grabs. At La Joya High School, only one name stands out: Eddie Villarreal, the junior running back that could find himself carrying most of the load on offense. Head coach Rueben Farias wants to see more of a combined passing attack. Hopefully, with new offensive coordinator, Car-

los Longoria taking on the realms, the Coyotes could be throwing the ball a lot more than what Coyote fans are used to seeing on Friday nights. The Coyotes made the playoffs in 2017 and lost to 29-6A San Antonio Southwest 14-7 in the 6A DI Bi-District Championships. Non-District openers against LJ Palmview, Roma, and Sharyland will set the stage for district against PSJA on September 27th.

Rowe, Mission Playoff Hopefuls? (Mission, Tx)-The Mission Eagles are on a Mission in 2018. Head coach Koy Detmer knows that this has to be the season to make the playoffs after last year’s close losses to Mission Veterans (18-14), McAllen Nikki Rowe (28-21 OT), and that heart-breaking, season ending loss to McAllen (34-27). Three losses that put the Eagles out of the playoffs with a 4-6 record. “Those losses were tough,” said Detmer. “We were in
the hunt (4-6, 2-4) for a playoff spot.” The Eagles return plenty of talent on offense. McAllen HS quarterback transfer, J.R. Cortez (6’0 185lbs) is competing for the top spot along with junior Damian Gomez (6’1 180lbs). Detmer likes both quarterbacks and he said that both QBs could see action, regardless. All eyes will be on RB Horacio Moronta, a 6’0 195lbs junior all-purpose player. At McAllen Nikki Rowe
High School, head coach Robert Flores enters his third season with two playoff appearances in backto-back seasons. “We had great two-a-days practices and our team has worked hard all season long,” says Flores. Players to watch are junior quarterback, Jonas Ortiz along with WRs Jean Salinas (5’10 175lbs), Ruben Salinas (6’2 170lbs), Derrick Luna (6’0 180lbs), Noe Ramirez (5’7 150lbs), and Adrian Salinas (5’10

175lbs). On the O-Line, the Warriors will be stacked with Rigo Davila (6’5 285lbs), and Aalok Zimmerman (6’0 275lbs). Defensively, the Warriors will be led by MLB Josiah Alonzo, DE Abraham Guevara, DE/OLB Jorge Barrera, and Jesse Garza (DT/NG). The Warriors will play non-district games against Weslaco, Edinburg North, and Mercedes before opening their season against McAllen Sept. 28th.

Pre-Season Players to Watch
Bears, Raiders Move To New District (Pharr, Tx)-Sometimes, building a football program just doesn’t make any sense, especially, when your team in on track to make a playoff run. Just ask PSJA North head coach Marcus Kaufmann. “Injuries have made a difference these last two seasons,” adds the three-year head coach. The Raiders went 7-0 in Kaufmann’s first season in 2016 and then, it happened. The injuries and missing the playoffs. The Raiders (2-8) watched their season in 2017, almost follow the same path, with close losses to Donna (24-20), La Joya
(21-20), and Edinburg (2321). Three game losses by less than four-points each. “Thats tough to absorb, but that’s football,’ added Kaufmann. The Raiders could have easily finished 5-5 in 2017. The Raiders are high on 2018 with a new offensive coordinator, Jeffery LeFevre coming in from Weslaco East HS to take over the play calling, something that Kaufmann has decided not to do this year. The Raiders open non-district games against PSJA Memorial, Harlingen South, and Weslaco before their district
opener against, PSJA on October 5th. The PSJA Bears showed some promise in 2017 under new head coach, Lupe Rodriguez. As expected, the Bears wanted to see a passing attack and the former passing leader in Texas did, just that, with returning QB Trae Guarjardo (2,919 yards). The Bears could be better in 2018 as they have adapted to the Rodriguez’s new passing offense. Players to watch will be OT David Chapa (6’4 280lbs), DE Aaron Noriega (6’1 250lbs), DT JJ Barientes (6’0 245lbs), and MLB Ja-

cob Sanchez (6’1 215 lbs). The Bears clinched a playoff berth in 2017 in the Class 6A DII Bi-District Championships and lost to Weslaco East 49-13. Rodriguez beefed up his non-district schedule with games against Corpus Christi King, San Benito, and La Joya. The Bears will open their new realigned District 306A campaign against PSJA North on October 5th, followed by four-time champions, McAllen Memorial October 12th and McAllen Nikki Rowe on October 18th.

Vela, Bobcats Favored To Run (Edinburg, Tx)-In only his first season as the head football coach at Robert Vela High School, John Campbell led his Sabercats to the third round of the UIL State 6A DII Regional Championships against 25-6A Austin Westlake. The Chaps ended the Sabercats run at a possible state title with a 70-14 win. “They were tough to play,” said senior linebacker, Luis Gutierrez. “Hopefully, this year will be different.” The Sabercats
will be gunning for another district title under Campbell and with non-district games against Laredo United, McAllen Memorial, Brownsville Hanna, and Los Fresnos, the Sabercats could go 4-0 before they meet Edinburg North on September 28th at Richard R. (6’0 190lbs). Expect the Sabercats to run the ball this year with Edinburg North senior transfer, Christian Flores, Daniel Enriquez, Rosendo Ramirez, and Aaron Alvarez. In 2017, Alvarez rushed for 871 yards and scored 18 TDs along with then freshmen, Kevin McKinney picking up another 177 yards on the ground as the Sabercats went 12-1 overall. On the offensive line, the Sabercats will be big. Ronnie Garza (6’6 275lbs), Jayden Borjas (6’5 280lbs), and Tyler Bailey (6’3 275lbs), will give the backfield all the push they will need to get first downs. At wide receivers, Justin Cantu (6’2 190lbs), Nicco Rodriguez (6’1 200lbs), and RB/WR Enriquez could all pose a passing threat on game nights. Head coach Campbell talks about special teams with
punter/kicker Tate Scott (5’8 165lbs). “He’s special and will help us on offense,” adds Campbell. The senior punter and kicker, a commit to Texas A&M Kingsville averages 42.0 yards a punt and also kicks field goals with great poise. Defensively, the Sabercats will be loaded with returning senior MLB Gutierrez (5’10 200lbs), DT Luis Hernandez, DT Brandon Beebe, and Michael Balderas. If there is one team from District 31-6A that could surprise, that team would be the Edinburg Economedes Jaguars and head coach Gabe Pena. The Jags ended their football campaign in 2017 with a disappointing 4-6, 2-5 overall record. In 2017, the Jags opened with an upset win over Brownsville Hanna 19-14, followed by another win over La Joya Palmview 13-9. In District 31-6A,
the Jags posted three straight losses to Weslaco East (56-14), Edinburg (27-17), and PSJA Memorial (24-23). “That was tough,” said Pena. Two more losses followed against PSJA and Edinburg North. Five straight losses pretty much took the hype out the Jags in 2017. This year, the Jags will be much better on defense with returning lettermen
Louie Rodriguez at tackle along with Samuel Torres (6’2 225lbs DT/G). David Arcos, (G 5’11 265lbs), Rolando Campos (5’9 LMB), and Anibal Gomez (6’0 200lbs) . The Jags will open its season with nondistrict games against PSJA Southwest followed by CC Moody, Laredo LBJ, and Roma before meeting Weslaco on September 27th in their
district opener. The Edinburg North Cougars will welcome longtime assistant and baseball coach, Damian Gonzalez. “I have waited for this opportunity for a longtime,” says Gonzalez. Panthers, Donna North, East Playoffs? (Weslaco, Texas)-Three Mid-Valley teams will move into District 31-6A in 2018 after the University Interscholastic League realigned all teams in February and will collided with all four Edinburg CISD teams. The Weslaco Panthers could be the team to watch in 2018 under second-year head coach Michael Salinas. The Panthers return with plenty of
lettermen, including junior quarterback Jacob Cavazos. The elusive QB was injured in 2017 but he will return as the “spark plug” of the Panther offense. Other players to watch are running backs Peyton Knaub and Roy Trevino. At Weslaco East High School, the Wildcats are playing, probably, its toughest non-district schedule under head coach Mike Bur-
get. The Wildcats will meet Manor HS in San Antonio, followed by Laredo Alexander at home on September 7th, Brownsville Hanna, and end their non-district schedule against Harlingen HS. The Wildcats open district play against Donna North HS on September 28th. The Donna North HS Chiefs found themselves former head coach from Edcouch-Elsa, Joe Marichalar.

Each team will play a total of five non-district games before beginning play in October. The Cardinals have scheduled Sharyland Pioneer, Laredo United South, Con-
verse Judson, Weslaco East, and Midland High School. At Los Fresnos, the Falcons and head coach Patrick Brown will play El Paso Montwood, LBJ Austin, Edcouch-Elsa, Edinburg Vela, and Odessa Permian. They Eagles will play McAllen Memorial HS followed by Edinburg Vela, Weslaco East, Sharyland, and Amarillo Tascosa. No matter what happens in these five games, all four teams could find themselves sitting at 2-3? 0-5? 5-0? Or maybe, even 3-2? Ten Teams, Four Playoff Spots

As for Mission Veterans Memorial head coach, Dave Gilpin would rather play district games than nondistrict games. He says, “that injuries” will not play a factor early on in district play because now, nine games will be meaningful. “We would have it not other way. This will be a tough district,” says Gilpin. And
he’s right too. Of the ten teams, the Patriots are district champions and so are the Brownsville Veterans Memorial Chargers from 2017. Two 6A teams moved down to 5A after the UIL deemed both schools as 5A schools. PSJA Memorial and PSJA Southwest will join 16-5A DI and both schools are looking for playoff spots in 2018. Last year, Southwest finished 0-10 and
the Wolverines from PSJA Memorial ended their 2017 campaign in fifth place with a 3-7 record. “Two losses kept us out the playoffs last year,” says PSJA Memorial head coach, Michael Uribe. District losses in 31-6A to Economedes (24-23) and
Edinburg North (24-20) halted the Wolverines chase for a playoff spot in 2017. “Those losses really hurt,” adds Uribe. The Wolverines will be loaded with plenty of talent with returning QB Orlando Munoz, RB Joaquin San-

Teams that could make a push are Mercedes, Laredo Cigarroa, and Edcouch-Elsa High School. The Edcouch-Elsa High School Yellowjackets could be in for a long season under newly-acquired head coach Bradly Chavez. Many questions remain after Chavez led the Santa Gertrudis Lions to a 2-8 season in Class 3A. Chavez lost five games, being outscored 185-0. At Mercedes, four quarterbacks have seen the playing field in 2018 and hopefully, head coach Roger Adame will find the right pick come district play. The Tigers will open their district season against Edcouch-Elsa at home on September 28th followed by Sharyland Pioneer, Valley View, and Sharyland. Ever since Elifonso Esquivel stepped in as the head football coach at Valley View HS, things just started to change with the mental approach by his coaches and players. “We will make the playoffs,” says quarterback Simon Fernandez. “We love our coaching staff.” Players to watch are Fernandez, a 5’10 195lbs power-running player along with WR Armando Ayala (5’11), WR Richard Ordaz (6’0), and RB Edwin Garcia. Head coach Ron Adame loves this game of football and he knows how to keep his teams consistent year in, year out. In six years, Adame has posted an impressive 60-16 overall record as the Rattlers head football coach with six straight playoff appearances. Last year, the Rattlers lost a heartbreaking playoff loss to Alice in triple overtime, 42-39. “That was a tough loss,” says Adame. Players to watch are quarterback Edgar Longoria, RB Adrian Solis, RB Hector Zavala, WR Ruben Davila, and WR Gaberial Tamez. The Rattlers open its district season against Laredo Cigarroa on September 28th followed by another home game against Edcouch-Elsa on October 12th. If the Rattlers can survive a treacherous non-dsitrict schedule against Brownsville Pace, McAllen Memorial, La Joya, and Brownsville Hanna, the Rattlers could find themselves making a deep playoff run in 2018. The Roma Gladiators will open its season against Rio Grande City followed by another western counterpart, La Joya HS. The Gladiators will be the team to watch thorughout the season after the departure of longtime head football coach Max Habecker. Why? “Four playoff teams make up our district,” says Bobcat head coach, Rocky James. “The UIL realigned out district into four teams, so regardless, all four teams will be headed to the state playoffs in Class 4A DII,” says James. The Rio Hondo
Bobcats are looking to survive the season without injuries, along with the rest of the league. “It’s a matter of surviving,” says Progreso head coach, Frank Martinez. “We need to work even harder but, our players are excited,” says Martinez. The Red Ants have not made the post season since 2004. “It’s been a long time,” adds Martinez. The Red Ants will open its district season against on October 19th when they play host to the Port Isabel Tarpons,
followed by a road trip to Rio Hondo on October 26th, before ending the regular season at home against Raymondville on November 2nd. Coming to Port Isabel as the new head football coach is Jason Strunk. He is the third head coach in three seasons. This will be an interesting season for the once, dominant “Seawall Defense team” as they try to overall their 2-7 season in 2017. At Raymondville, the
Bearkats will be the team to watch as they make a run for the district title. 2017 District 16-4A DII Final Standings Rio Hondo** Raymondville** Orange Grove* CC West Oso* Port Isabel Progreso

(5’11) will keep things balanced with DE Andrew Villarreal. In deep South Texas, the Santa Maria Cougars, second-year head coach Steve Flores will play non-district games against MMA, Premont, La Villa, Progreso, before beginning district play against Three Rivers HS on October 12th at home. Twenty-two players are listed on the roster
with Giovanni Diaz at quarterback, along with RB Jose Luis Serrata, Albert Villarreal, Angel Pena, Israel Martinez, Ralfael Aueros, and Mario Vasquez. Most of the Cougars will play both ways. The Cougars made the playoffs in 2017 with a bi-district loss to Shiner HS 61-0. If any team is going to stop the two-time State 2A Champions, Refugio Bob-
cats, teams will have to figure out how to stop the Bobcats from scoring 681 points on offense and finding a way to score points against their defense, (224 allowed) as they did in 2017. The Bobcats are reloaded with plenty of talent beginning with quarterbacks Jared Kelley (6’1 195lbs) and Austin Ochoa (6’2 195lbs). The Bobcats throw the football. It’s what they do best.
