USER RESEARCH

Test 20 users who use vacuum cleaners frequently:

time to end a lot of "I have to sp ght angle." ri to the s be tu e th adjust

13 female, 7 male Participants are asked to do the tasks below with an existing dustmite vacuum cleaner: Set up the vacuum cleaner Use the vacuum to clean the room Clean the mattress Clean out the dust cup

Clean the dust cup

"It is dirty to clean the dust cup with my hand s"

Charge the vacuum During the process, we asked the participants to verbalize their thoughts while using the product. After the user testing, we organized 3 main problems.

UV Ray Energy

UV ray is strong "I wonder if this mites?" enough to kill dust

IDEATION high y level a r V U Why is ays? loudy d c n o n eve

Reflection!

EXPERIMENT We used a UV energy detector to test if the aluminum surface worked as we expect. And it DID WORKED! UV energy level increased 20% when added the aluminum surface. 8

Increase UV ray energy by reflecting it back to surface We want to increase the energy of UV ray in order to eliminate more dustmites. The idea is by adding a reflective surface-aluminiumaround the light tube. As the UV ray hit the aluminium surface, it bounces back. So that the area being cleaned (mattress / sofa / carpet...)receives more UV ray.

Heat Heats up to 50 ℃ , which is the temperature that causes dust mites to paralyse.

Reflect UV light Ultra-Violet Light kills dust mite. Reflect UV light with aluminum surface at the back, hence the fabric gets more UV energy.

10

D-Shaped Neck

Wrong direction proofing. Prevents the user from assembling the attachment at unprecise angles.

Easy to Clean A rounded shape dust collector without any angles, makes cleanIng fast and easy. Get rid of dust simply by rinsing.

11

A model that works like a REAL product We took the electronic components out of a vacuum cleaner to make our model. The process was way harder than I thought it would be. While building the 3D model in SolidWorks, I had to consider

12

where to place each components. The challenge is to use the space in the most efficient way, since there are A LOT of components. The other tough par t was to assemble them. The circuit board is easily damaged. We changed three boards until we reached success.

FINAL PRODUCT Our final outcome is a workable vacuum cleaner. It is a set including a vacuum brush for regular cleaning, an anti dust mite brush and tubes for extension. RAIN CATCHER Sustainable approach to solve water problems in Detroit.

16

Detroit

is known as the "Motor City' in the US. In the 1960s and 1970s as car companies moved to newer areas, the city lost its residents from that time. Unemployment and poverty continue to grow to this day. About 34.5 % of Detroit residents lived below the poverty level in 2017.

Unaffordable Water Bill Researchers found that 84 % of residents surveyed said they cut back on monthly expenses to pay their water bills.

Stormwater Too much stormwater can overload the sewage system which causes basement backups, street flooding, and polluted wastewater to flow into rivers.

17

SOLUTION & IDEATION A water station built in parking lots for collecting rain and saving water for public use.

Provides free water to help cut down water bills.

Harvest rain to make waste water useful.

Where? Parking lots! The rain catchers are installed in parking lots of places such as shopping plazas, apartments or public parking areas. (As shown in the pictures)

Why? Easy to access, Wide land Parking lots are wide, open lands which are perfect spots to collect decent amount of rain. Besides that, these areas are very common in the city, means that people can approach them easily.

Rain comes down the roof. There are pipes installed in the two poles of the Rain Catcher, which leads rain water into an underground water storage. The capacity is 900 gallons, according to the average rainfall in Detroit.

20

Heating wires Embeded between solar panels, the heating wire melts snow in winter, thus the rain catcher collects water all year long.

AGING SOCIETY Time and distance became the barrier in family relationships. We are heading towards an aging society. Relationship with the elderly has become an important issue. L o t s o f p e o p l e n o wa d a y s d o n’ t l i v e w i t h t h e i r grandparents. Due to busy schedules, people spend less time to get in touch with their grandparents.

DESIGN CONCEPT Share your daily life with your loved ones, as if they are always BESIDE! "Beside" is a shared album designed for families. No need to make time to take a phone call, just send photos to the album, then grandparents can get the update of one's daily life.

25

HOW IT WORKS

Family Member People from younger generations are very familiar with using smartphones and social media. By a phone, users can share photos and videos to the family album.

Send photos

Grandparent

Reply I am your as sistance Bobb i.

26

According to interviews, we found that most elder people have the habit of watching TV. Besides, the screen size of the TV is ideal for people who has poor eyesight. The family album would be shown on the TV. The companion robot "Bobbi" assists the grandparent whenever help is needed.

FAMILY MEMBERS' DEVICE

Create your family album

Send photos to family

1

You can send photos from the gallery of your phone, or take a picture. The grandparent and other family member will receive your photo

2

Get linked: place your phone close to Bobbi the robot. It will sign you in the system automatically. Send invitation to your family members: They will receive a text which leads them right into the album.

27

GRANDPARENTS' DEVICE

Do you want to say something to Josh?

Bobbi the companion assistant

Bobbi will instruct how to go through the album by talking to the grandparent.

Album on TV The TV displays the photos. Switch to album mode from regular T V by using the remote control.

28

Reply to the photo Bobbi will ask if the user want to reply to the photo or not. The system records the user's reply and sends it out. Instructions are given both on the screen and by Bobbi.

GK Sekkei 2019 Summer Internship

32

GK Sekkei is a design incoporation expertises in environment design. Being recommended by my professor, I was able to participate a 3 week internship in GK.

HOW TO MAKE DAILY COMMUTE IN TOKYO FUN? I did field research also interwiewed every member of the company to know more about Japanese commuter, and discussed with my mentors daily. Though there was a language barier, we are still able to communicate with graphics, journey maps, or wireframes. I learned a lot from this process.

The final outcome is a phone application for commuters. Since I discovered that people in Tokyo likes to listen to music when they commute, I made this app related to sound and music. The app has three modes. With this app, commuters can enjoy their way to work. 1. Music scavenger hunt game. The user can collect sounds of different instruments as they walk, then compose into a song. 2. Daily suggestion mode. The app suggests a certain type of music which matches the feeling of different routes to work. 3. Customized environmental sound. The user can check which kind of noise he or she dislikes. By putting on earpods, the app mutes the sound.

Exchange Semester in College for Creative Studies Arts & Design School Detroit MI, USA Exchange program: 2019 winter semester Product Design

34

A peek into the US I was surprised by how close the bonding is between companies and the school. I participated in industry day where people from firms come to CCS to look at students' works; also I took field trips to two companies to know more about the industry. Great experience I'd never had before!

Working Solo Back in NCKU, we always work in teams. It's the total opposite in CCS. I worked solely on projects which helped me develop my own perspective in design.

Courses In my main design studio class, my project was about a rain collector for people who have trouble paying their water bill. This is my first time focusing on such a REAL problem. This was also a great opportunity to understand more about this unique city. One of my favorite class is Interface for Smart Object. In this class I learned the process of UI/UX by using tools like user map, hiararchy map, wireframing.
