I am granted with good sense to feel and care through the learning in industrial design and architecture. I realize how to really see designs around us and establish my way of looking on various things. I consider that both industrial design and architecture design is the response to some kind of issues after thoughtful thinking although they express in very dierent ways. Through interdisciplinary learning, I am constructing a complete map of design and hope to have a wider vision on design. I truely enjoy this journey and will go on my way to be a good designer!

Creation begins form imitation 創造從模仿開始 1/1 scale fine-model /pu

It is necessary to have comprehensive understanding about current products before bring forth new ideas. Not only do we need to grasp the basic concept of the product’s structure and function, knowing which structure needs to be there to support which function, but we also need to inquire into designers’ purposes, choices and the correspondent qualities, as our standard to redesign. I think these are what this project wants to teach me. By the toaster reproduction practice, I subtly observe a toaster with visual and tactile sensation and consider which tool and procedure can most efficiently assist me in making the same toaster. I also get familiar with various tools, techiques and their effects such as cutting, gluing and ashing in this practice.

Two classmates form a group and choose two counterpart movie ďŹ gures as the theme of toaster design. My partner choose James P. Sullivan and I choose Mike Wazowski.

The depiction of Mike Wazowski is different in Monsters, Inc. and Monsters University. I choose the one in Monsters University because it strikes more chord in my mind. Mike Wazowski gives me an impression of being passionate and straightforward. However, the most touching part is that he sticks to his dream with all his heart. Therefore I choose chasing dream to be my design beginning point. Chubby figure and exaggerately big eye are the most obvious charasteristics of Mike Wazowski. The other subtle features include horns, braces and four slim limbs. An imageboard is made based on inner and outer features of Mike Wazowski and the feature sketch is based on the imageboard.

Find the best answer in all possibilities 在眾多可能性中尋找最佳解答 1/2 scale rough models /pu Through the process of form development, discussion and modification. I finally choose two ideas which can better represent Mike Wazowski to do prototypes. The most important problem that I have to face with is meassurement. I planed to determine the same-size ratio of the fine model first and then take half of it on the 1 : 2 rough model. I was quite confused about how to determine the fine model’s size at first. Later I decide to refer to current toasters’ size, with extra 1 - 2 cm as buffer space and modify according to my design. There are still lots of uncertainties of form, material and processing methods in the transitional phase from plane sketch to 3D object. It is not possible to arrive at conclusion by drawing on my own imagination. The proper way is trying to achieve every possibility and review its result. Getting ready for the fine model by means of notes and pictures seems to be the main purpose of prototype in this project.

Sort fire makes sweet malt 慢工出細活 1/1 scale fine-model /pu, Arcylic, ABS Various model skills are applied in the project. It took me most time on shaping pu and putty, for example, creating symmetrical curve surface and magnifying the ridgeline between planes, during which I need to be really focus on to avoid grinding ridgelines away and it also requires huge hand efforts to sanding sharp edge lines. Besides, I put lots of efforts on eliminating every visible cavity and dent to ensure that the surface is smooth and beautiful. For colors, I use matted green as the main color and silver in the fillister. For form, I use different materials like arcylic, abs and different techniques like sand-spraying, laser cutting to enrich the toaste and enhance the realness by the use of knob, sticker and pad.

No longer need to stuck your hand into the jar or converse the jar in order to take out the chips. One More Chip is a package design applied the priciple of lipstick on, therefore chips would stay on top of the jar at any moment.

Use avaliable materials to visualize concepts 善用手邊的材料將構想具體呈現 rough models /EK Foam, Foam Core, paper, Arcylic stick

In the past two years, not only did I accumulate numerous practical experiences, but also clarify the fact that best materials are not guarantee to best design. Finding usable materials in the redundant materials or inexpensive ready-made objects and making use of them is instead the economical and efficient way in the phase of testing prototypes. Before the jar for chips, I was interesting in developing two ideas on containers for disposal spoons, one with spiale as the opening part while the other with pulley. However, it is not very convenient to take out the spoon. So I come to focus on designing the chips’ jar. I use EK foam and spring to make the internal and external screw thread respectively. Although precisely calculated, the internal and external screw thread still doesn’t match, inspiring me the idea of making them with cast pouring. It is really delightful to rack my brains to realize an idea from nothing. In my opinion, it is exactlly the charisma of design!

In consideration of the little chance that the screw thread could precisely match, I choose to display my design with mechanism mock-up. I find a jar with screw thread in it and cut a circle on its lid as openning of the chips jar. I find another jar with screw thread as mould and fill poly in. After detach the mold, I get a poly chunk with screw thread whose direction is opposite to that in the jar. I then cut the chunk into the form needed, and use it as the part rising and lowering. Finally I use PU to make the rotatable part under the jar according to the jar’s diameter.

Imagine that sunshine passes through the window and lies on the chair. The chair projects strips of light and shadow on the ground, which is as beautiful as the spectrum.

Side View Varieties

sketch On the basis of chair, I decided to focus on the topic of weaving. Then I started to develope concepts by means of sketching and got few forms. However, I discovered that I didn’t take many details into consideration. Hence, I drew various posible forms in side view. In this way, the relationships between back, seat, armrests and legs can be easily figured out and it is also more convenient to further consider material and structure. I picked two ideas, weaving and changing width to be tested in prototypes. Since weaving is more like artistry, I ended up choose the other one.

Balance between perseverence and compromise 堅持與妥協的拿捏

For the reason that it is the first time for me to design such a huge product and that furniture is highly connected to human body, it takes me lots of time to consider and balance different aspect in my design. In the aspect of human factors, I get useful suggestions such as keep spine straight and keep knees vertical to the ground from my human factors professor. As for meassurement, after analyze the data of current chairs and body dimensions, I adopt the average value as the approximate settings and modify slightly according to my design. The next step is go to the lumber shop with same-size ratio design drawings to get materials. In the discussion, I am informed by the boss that some of my ideas are difficult to be carried out. So I seek the boss’s advice on how to modify the design, how to assemble and install and which kind of wood meets my requirements. Seeing the gap between design and manufacture makes me realize that it is inevitable to change some part of the design to put it into practice and it is my job to find out the balance between perseverence and compromise as a designer. Limitations on techniques, material characteristics and communication skills are also lessons from this experience.

Materials in Process

Technics in Process For the main body of the chair, make two frames to combine and fix the five wood sticks for seat and for back respectively. Then excavate a rectangular fillister on the back of sticks with circular saw. Next, put 1.2 cm wide jackstraws between every two sticks and fix five sticks with F-clamps. After spread the wood gum in the fillister, put a fit-in plywood in it and use C-clamps to press the plywood into the fillister. Then stick the back on the seat. Bore holes from bottom of the seat in the attached area, one or two holes for each stick, and lock screws into the holes to strengthen the attachment of back and seat. Use the drilling machine to drill fillisters under the seat and fix legs to it with mortise joints. The horizontal sticks for support is attached to the front legs with mortise joints as well while the back legs and armrests are attached to the seat and the back with tenons made from the plywood in the seat and back respectively. All the attachment are reinforced by locking screws into the drilled holes.

To me, consult with modesty is an important way to learn. Fortunately, I had several discussion with the keeper of department factory, who is good at carpentry. He enthusiastically gave advice on execution methods and helped me a lot in the making process. It is easy to think but hard to perform. It takes a long period of time on position desicion and size meassurement to take everything include tightness and harmony into account. I truely learned a great lesson through observation and operation in the whole procedure.

Encase the arcylic tube into arcylic ring and clip the ring with two smaller ring from top and bottom respectively. Since the two rings are attached to the tube, the tube with two rings are rotatable rest on the bigger ring.

吸塵器最大的不便之處在於難以清掃家具之間的隙縫,必須將家具移動開來才能清掃。

能解決之問題,又兼具機能與美感的手持式吸塵器。

且握把弧度符合人體工學,握把內圈以矽膠墊增加拿握舒適度與摩擦力。透過透明的集 塵蓋可以看見灰塵量,按下手把上前方按鈕即可將集塵蓋打開清除內部灰塵。

Industrial Design Give Me a Hand Cubes’ Cool


Give Me a Hand 2014 Lexus Design Award Workshop Teamwork with Lai,Le-Ci, Tan Shi Wei Give Me a Hand is a device that enables passengers on the MRT to complete an animation by holding on to the hand straps. By accomplishing this simple task passengers would come to realize that their actions can actually change the environment around them.

Senses are intrinsic to life: they are what allow us to perceive the world. Taking this purposefully broad theme, considering seeing, hearing, feeling, smelling and tasting, we open ourselves up to a wide range of possibilities.


Scenario

Handrail Feature Whenever the train departs, the animation on the window screen would be activated. With more passengers stand in front of the screen holding on to the hand straps, the animation would be played faster through the sensation of pressure sensor and the transmission of bluetooth 4.0.

Storyboard Film Feature Educative animation related to our environment is broadcast on the screen such as issues on polar regions and forest fires. By passengers’ action of hold ing on to the hand straps, polar bears on the verge of drowning are able to meet their families again. We hope the design can awake public’s awareness of extreme climate and make them do their part to environment by taking the MRT.

CUBES’ COOL Cooling Design 2014

無扇葉風扇與盆栽各自為一個基本單元,由使用者依照需要自 由疊加,做為書桌上的隔間牆。操作上從植栽最上方澆水,連 通的水線能分配水量至每一個盆栽;風扇的開關置於最下方, 所有風扇由開關一次性開啟。透過增加換氣率、促進空氣流通 與水分比熱大不易升溫的特性達成室內空間降溫之設計目的。

問題界定 Problem Defining

觀察發現室內空間的熱源來自於日曬、電器散熱與人體散熱。三項熱源 對於室內溫度造成的影響分別受到了建築材料特性、產品材料特性與人 體代謝率的影響。在一個現存的室內空間中,建築與產品材料是固定的 而人體代謝率則因個體活動會有所不同。 We observed that heat of indoor spaces comes from sunlight, electric appliances and human bodies. Those three resources of heat are affected by the features of architecture materials, the features of product materials and human metabolic rate. Materials of architecture and products are fixed in one indoor space while human metabolic rate is varying from individuals.

場域確定為辦公室之後,我們著手調查現有降溫的方法、技術與原理。 常見的方式包括了種植植物、灑水、通風、遮陽。其他則有水冷系統、 製冷晶片、空調、隔熱貼紙等。 We start to investigate on current methods, techinology and principles after choose office as our target place. Common methods include growing plants, sprinkling water, promoting air flow and shielding from the sun. There are water cooling system, T.E.C., air conditioner and tinted window film as well.

以百葉窗框或直立式窗葉直接阻隔熱源之一的日曬,結合風扇、 噴霧、水幕與植栽來強化通風散熱的機制。 With the help of designs aimed at ventilation such as fan, mist sprayer, water curtain and potted plants, venetian blinds or vertical window leafs is able to shield sunlight and dissipate indoor heat as well.

降溫原理 Cooling Principles

1 空氣對流促進體表汗水蒸發,蒸發時的吸熱現象能夠將體熱帶走。

Air convection boosts sweat on body surface to evaporate and to take away the body heat.

2 水比熱大,受熱時不易升溫。當周遭環境相對高溫時水體能夠吸收

並且儲存環境中的熱量。 It is hard to heat up water because of its high specific heat. Water is able to absorb and keep heat when surroundings is relatively hot.

3 在視覺上冷色系較能夠讓人感到涼快。 Cool colors cool people in visual.

降溫方式 Cooling Methods

1 以風扇吹風增進室內的空氣對流。

Fan blows to advance air convention.

2 水分透過在盆栽中流動的過程,增加與空氣接觸並交換熱量的機會。 Air is exposed to water when water flows in the plant pot so there is a higher chance to exchange heat.

3 配色選用藍色與綠色以創造涼爽的視覺效果。

3 與生產線溝通 將草蓆經過剪裁、收邊之後與布料 交由裁縫阿姨縫製。透過不斷討論 克服草蓆過厚難以車線的困難並且 找出既節省布料又能完好縫製草蓆 與布料的最佳方式。

在兩層日本棉麻中間車了 一層厚襯,讓整個資料夾 有一定的挺度,方便資料 放入。資料與藺草接觸後 會帶有淡淡的藺草香味。

考量到手機尺寸的多元, 設計了大、小兩種尺寸, 能夠放入市面上大部分款 式的手機。在手指放置的 位置擺放藺草,讓人能夠 感受其觸感。手機套內部 使用麂皮材質保護手機螢 幕,彈性鬆緊帶扣住手機 後則能避免手機掉出。

將大片草蓆以雷切方式 取得。因為草蓆上紅、 白、藍色的塑膠繩,讓 每一副耳環具有獨一無 二的花紋。

花了很多時間研究如何 將草蓆捲成長軸狀。在 耳環與項鍊兩種飾品上 都有以塗膠、上油的方 式進行防水處理。


水桶包 Drawstring Bag with 3 colors 直立排列的藺草讓包包能夠 挺立。背繩的尾端以剩餘的 布料縫製可愛的收邊,背繩 的長度也可以依照個人需求 進行調整。

經驗與檢討 What We Learned 能夠回本、最理想的定價應該要是成本的三倍,但是因為藺草難以加工的特性, 一開始在設計研發的階段遇到了許多困難,那時我們為了達成設計而不惜成本, 造成成本非常高昂,我們預估若售價訂為成本的三倍,將會降低市集主力客群大學生-的購買意願,因此經過一番討論之後我們決定將某部分產品的定價維持

在一個能夠被接受的範圍之內,而沒有達到三倍的成本價錢,這是最後收支沒有 平衡的一個主要原因,也讓我們學到了:難以加工的材質應該要預留較長的時間去 實驗、測試。 另外,原先的預想是與茄芷阿嬤工作坊和茂興製蓆廠成為合作夥伴,由於時間緊 迫的緣故,最後與他們的關係比較像是上下游,之後若有繼續經營是可以努力改 善的部分。

CIS Design Les Fourmis

設計背景 ¦ Background 假想一家甜點店,為其設計企業辨識系統。

Assume a dessert shop and design CIS for it.

品牌定位 ¦ Brand Les Fourmis在法文中的意思是螞蟻,借用 螞蟻喜愛甜食的特點作為品牌意象。希望 藉由中性的品牌設定讓男性顧客也能和女 性顧客一樣輕鬆地享用甜點。

We use the fact that ant, Les Fourmis in Franch, likes sweets as our brand image. Hoping that neutral image is free to male customers as it is to female customers. 色彩計畫 ¦ Colors

商標設計 ¦ Logo 使用手寫Les Fourmis作為Logo主體,以手寫字 創造親切的形象。拉長S的尾端至螞蟻,模擬出 螞蟻走過的痕跡。以一完整圓形包含Logo中所有 的文字與圖像。配色採用中性且富有甜點意象的 卡其色。

Use hand-writting characters as main part of the logo to make it friendly. The end of S is extended to the ant in order to simulate the trace of an ant passing through. A circle is used to contain all the words and images. And khakhi is chose becaused of its neutral and dessert-tending feeling.

Package Design 設計主題 ¦ Topic 為 Les Fourmis 設計四季系列的果醬禮盒。

Design seasons jam set for Les Fourmis. 色彩計畫 | Colors

包裝外部採用 CIS 選色以創造系列的一致感。內部及兩側使用代表 春夏秋冬的粉色、綠色、橘色與藍色,並且壓上Logo所排列成的圖樣。

Use CIS colors on external package for unity while use colors stand for seasons on internal and side package, with logo-based patterns on it.

設計特色 ¦ Features 材質使用環保的萊尼紙,除了具有提示作用 的側邊季節顏色之外,透過包裝上的鏤空也 可以看見果醬種類。將外蓋摺進包裝後禮盒 兼具展示與收納之用。

Use eco-friendly Linen as package material. Besides seeing jam from the front windows, the side colors also points out the season of jam inside. It can be both displayed and taken in after folding the lid into the package.

沿用原先的 Logo 為 Les Fourmis 設計茶葉罐包裝,配合茶葉口味 在中間使用粉紅色作為視覺亮點。
