PROJECT 1. The Kite It is absolutely the interesting project to explore the ways in which space is producing by the multi layered space and structure found in kite construction.

Maha Nakhon By PACE DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION PLC.

MAHANAKHON HAS BEEN CAREFULLY CARVED TO INTRODUCE A THREE-DIMENSIONAL RIBBON OF ARCHITECTURAL "PIXELS" THAT SWIRLS AROUND THE TOWER.

First Interaction Model: twisting box Base on what I learned from Maha Nakhon, I’m using the pixelation box to construct the basic design structure of box kite

BIG IDEA: twisting box structure (pixelation), overlapping layer

WALT DISNEY CONCERT HALL By Frank Gehry

The Walt Disney Concert Hall sweeping, metallic surfaces make the looking of the sailing boat is blowing by the wind

First Interaction model: box with sweeping surface Within the sweeping surface, I’m intend to utilize the canvas as the feeling and looking of sweeping tension surface

BIG IDEA: Tension, sweeping surface, and deconstructivism

Strengths: structure and sweeping surface are in a right and clear direction which relate back to my inspiration. Weakness: the material is too heavy to make it fly. Need to make the structure big and thin.

Opportunity: trying the different material at the exterior like straw or foam board and trying the paper as the interior sweeping surface.

Find the right angle: upside Down

Kite Research Jose Maria Yturradle is the expert of the Fine art. He creates many geometric kite and box kite.

Second Interaction Model

Base on the previous model strength, weakness, and opportunity, I make the structure bigger to create the space in which can put the different sweeping surface material. Moreover, I’m twisting every box in different angle to create the feeling of energetic.

Strength: the bigger cube with the wood frame works very well in the way of creating space, and the paper material sweeping surface looks very nice on the cube. Weakness: lost the original inspiration (because i twist in different angle), and despite the paper sweeping surface looks well, the tension and the stretch of paper is not enough to satisfy the design.

Opportunity: I will go back to my original inspiration, and base on that, I will find other concept inspiration to enrich the original inspiration design.

Concept Inspiration / Third Interaction

Musashino art university museum & library By Sou Fujimoto

Though the enclosed programmatic elements partially obscure the spiral downstairs, it is clearly legible upstairs, where the floor-to-ceiling bookshelf winds repeatedly around the reference desk in the middle of the room.“The whole space is continuous but on two levels, says Fujimoto

Base on the concept of making the connection between one space to another space, and the continuous series of space by going and seeing thing through, I just decided to play the model around in the Rhino 6 to see which angle is good for people seeing through and which angle is necessary to conceal. (which can relate to Annie Dillard’s essay “seeing” => now you see it, now you don’t affair)

So-il kukje art center By so-il

It is the building that covering and enveloping by the hand-fabricated chainmail veil, which responds with the balance of bold contemporary aesthetics and intricate technique.

Base on the inspiration that instructor giving to me, I’m trying to utilize the idea of cover on the Rhino 6, and I just find out that it looks really nice. Therefore, I want to take the next step: doing it on the model.

Third Interaction Model At first, I’m trying to use the foam board to create the lighter version of model, and I’m testing the reaction of stockings for the sweeping surface

Later, I’m using two section of three box to create the special box kite, and also, I’m using the concept of musashino art university museum & library put the black stockings inside the box to cover some structure, and the concept of So-il kukje art center covering the exterior structure with white stockings.

Strength: the idea of covering and concealment and reveal is absolutely the fantastic idea. Weakness: although, the idea of covering and concealment and reveal is great, it is hard to make it a good looking exterior. Especially, when I using the stocking covering the structure, it looks weird.

Opportunity: change the material of exterior covering and try to go back to wood stick because the wood stick is same weight as foam board. Moreover, i would like to spend more time on figure out the best way doing the sweeping surface in the interior.

Final model

At the final model, I’m using the format I find out in the Rhino 6 to create the wood frame as the structure, paper as the exterior covering, and stocking as the interior sweeping surface.

Front side

Strengths: the structure is strong and complex. The development direction is in the right way. For example, the paper covering is doing well and the way it is covering successfully create the reveal and conceal , the wood structure is creating the balance of ordering and chaos, and the stockings is doing the very great work at sweeping and creating the tension, stretch, and concealment of interior structure.

Weaknesses: the exterior covering is clearly not enough for the top or bottom, and the structure, stockings, and paper is clearly to much, all of that things come with a little bit messing. Moreover, the material is still the things I need to looking for because it is still to heavy for a kite inspiration structure.

Opportunity: I will say I NEED more time to finish it and more time to fix the structure and material.

Risks: probably will forgot my original inspiration or concept and get into a different / wrong direction.

Final model (Rhino 6)

I really love the way Raytraced show the sunlight and material. Otherwise, I will never figure out the model and where to improve

The sense of flying kite

Kite workshop Our final was to design a kite workshop at the place that was chosen, where located at the eastern entrance of Golden Gate Park at the intersection of Stanyan and Haight streets.

Mapping When I first did the mapping, I didn’t come up with any topic. The only thing I did was just tracing the map. However, as I’m actually visiting the site, I was inspired that why not doing the topic which shows the connection between human and nature, and the disconnection between city and park. Therefore , I decided to do the mapping which shows the different type of boundary.

Group site Then , the class shifted to discuss about the group site project. It is kind of hard for me because at first I don’t really understand what is site. However, as I’m learning and doing the project I learned the way build up the site with my teammate. Moreover, I had learned that where should my building build at (which locate at the little star in the mapping).

programming What I was thinking about the programming was based on the little exercise that we did in the class. To begin, I considered each room should be: Workshop: 1500 square feets Lobby:750 square feets Gallery: 1000 square feets Bathroom: 500 square feets Cafe: 500 square feets

Conference/ media room: 750 square feets Bathroom: 500 square feets Admin office: 250 square feets

Exploration/ model interaction The word I choose to describe the site is “connection”, and the other word for my building is “discovery”. The reason I choose the word “discovery” because I want people to discover the connection between the human (city) and the nature (park). Therefore, I decided to create a series of wall which represents the disconnection of space. I have also put holes on those walls, allowing people to discover the connection between one space to another space.

Model interaction discover

Final building Since we don’t have enough time to complete the project, I hadn’t decided the exterior of this building. At first, I’m drawing the first floor plan to experience the way seeing through the building and the place that the walls should placed.

When the drawing was finished, I don’t have much time left. Therefore, I decided to do the model first, then exploring the second floor.

As the model was in the progress, I just found out that it is so hard to build the building model with interior.

Since I don’t have time to think about the exterior and the second floor, I just briefly made the layout of the second floor, following the format of first floor to create the exterior.

Taking the advantage of ramp at the site, I decided to create the sense of slitting going down to the park and connect to the nature.

Drawing The drawing of the second floor plan, section, elevation and diagram.

Rhino work on my building

Other side of the building

Building in the real site

Strengthen: The rationale and concept behind the building. The thought of the first floor interior walls and layout. Weakness: the details of the wall need more some time to experience and discover the location of the first floor and second floor. I need to enlarge/extend the route for people to discover the connection between different areas. I need to do more and think more about the exterior. Opportunities: If I had more time on this project, I will first experience the second floor, and expand the idea of “discover into section plan. Moreover, I will design the overall structure and the exterior looking before I design the interior meaning. In addition, I will spend more time on follow the original kite curved structure. Risk: I may not be able to impose the original ideal of discovery.

The End
