A guide for importing, editing and producing videos using iMovie This guide is for beginning level users of iMovie. This manual explains how to import media, add video effects, transitions and titles. Following standard video editing software, the iMovie layout is simple, easy and fun to use. iMovie software is only available on select Mac computers on campus, including the Digital Media Lab (Library 120).

Step 1: Import Media Import files from computer by clicking the import button in the toolbar. Imported files will be organized into “events� in your iMovie library. Properly organizing your media content makes editing a simpler, quicker process.

Files can also be dragged from your desktop into iMovie library. Content will be organized on the left side of the screen.

Step 2: Add Media to Timeline Simply drag files into the timeline at the bottom of the screen to begin editing video and audio.

The timeline is oriented from left to right. Preview content by rolling the cursor over selected clips.

An audio waveform will appear below video frames where volume can be adjusted.

Step 3: Visual Effects To add video effects use the toolbar above the viewing screen.

Step 4: Splitting To split a video clip into two clips, place the playhead where you would like to split the clip and press command + B. Video Playhead

Step 5: Transitions Transitions are useful for smoothing out the changes between clips.To add a transition, click and drag a transition between two clips on the timeline and a transition icon will appear.

Step 6: Titles and Credits To add titles and credits, select a preferred style and drag onto timeline. Styles can be previewed by setting cursor over selected style. When editing titles, a Text editing icon will appear in the toolbar.

Double click on “TITLE TEXT HERE” to change title text.

Step 7: Produce and Export When you are finished, produce your video by clicking on the “Share” button in the far right corner of the screen. Make sure you have set your preferred resolution and format before choosing where to save your production. Remember to save your project in iMovie!
