Typography and Layout with InDesign®

A guide to set typefaces and images with InDesign® This guide is for advanced users with InDesign®. The manual is designed to teach advanced typesetting and image placement, including the ability to embed text wrap for quotes and images. Working with InDesign® can be tricky. Therefore, this guide will help you excel in your ability to work faster with InDesign®. InDesign® software is available in designated Mac and PC computers on campus. InDesign® is available in the Digital Media Lab (DML, in Library room 120 - open to everyone during all library hours), Gist Hall 125, and the art department (both restricted use).

First Step: Open InDesign Open a new file: File > New > Document (⌘N). Next, set the document settings.

Second Step: Insert grids Grids are guidelines used to structure content.

Third Step: Paragraph Styles

Place the cursor on or select the target text to apply a style. After selecting the text click in the window Key > Style > Paragraph Styles, to modified the headline. Then create a new style for text. By clicking “Basic Paragraph” and

Headline: the title of your article

Subhead: a heading for a subsection of a piece of writing.

Byline: the name of the writer

Body Copy: the story content

Next, click “Create New Style.” Name the new style (Headline, Subhead, Byline, Body Copy, etc.) and define the styles, such as font family and style. You can also set “Indents and Spacing” to align the text to “Left Justify.” After justifying the text, align the text to the grid by by clicking “all lines.” Repeat these same steps for the Subhead, Byline, and Body copy.

4 Fourth Step: Textwrap To wrap text around an image you will first need to open a cropped image. After pasting the image in InDesign select the image and click Windows > Textwrap then a box will appear. Click the “Wrap around object shape”

Next, change the “Top offset” to “0p7” and then set the “Type” to “Detect Edges.” Once the image has textwrap send it to the back: Object > Arrange > Send to Back. Textwrap Example

Last Step: Export as PDF Select File > Adobe PDF Presets > High Quality Print

Before exporting make sure “all pages are selected” for print, then press the “Export.”
