Three Candidates Compete for Coordinator

STORY BY DIOMINIQUE MCKISSICK — PHOTOS BY KRISTINE MOORE AND RICKEY MILLER Greek life has always been active on campus and a highlight for some.

A position for Greek coordinator has become available to bring Greek life back to its full potential.

The University makes the rules and regulations for the fraternities and sororities on campus. But the men and women of these organizations feel that they are not being heard. So as new restrictions are made the Greeks do not agree with them and have no say in what is going on and the University and Greek students tend to but-heads.

The job of the Greek coordinator would be to make sure the students understand and comply with what the university has said. And to also be a spokesman for the students.

To choose the right person for the job a search committee has been put together.

The chair of the committee is Dr. Drew smith, the director of international student programs. Other members include Johnny Campbell chief of university police & direct of emergency management, Keasha Gordon-Turner administrative specialist, David Maxwell alumnus, and Jordan Grey. According to Smith the committee is looking for someone who meets the qualifications, has experience and is an overall strong candidate.

Three candidates were chosen for the selection process. Chris McQueen, Teena Johnson, and Stacy Beam.

Over the course of two weeks the candidates were put through a series of interviews. They also had to meet with the Greek students and give a

brief presentation. At the end of each presentation the students gave a personal assessment on the candidate with a handout given to them.

McQueen was the first candidate to present himself to the students and university officials. McQueen is a member of Iota Phi Theta Fraternity Inc. He has knowledge of NPC (National PanHellenic Conference), IFC (Interfraternity Council), and NPHC (National Pan-Hellenic Council) from his years of work with other university Greek systems. His presentation was filled with well researched numbers on past and current memberships and GPAs. He also had a very well thought out plan on how to keep grades where they needed to be and keep membership at a steady number.

“I will have each group help to get a flyer together, front to back, with information on the Fraternity or Sorority and contact information.

That way when an incoming freshman comes on campus and wants to be a part of your organization they can call someone from the contact sheet and say hey I’m on campus and I want to know more,” McQueen said.

The next candidate was Johnson.

She is a member of Alpha Sigma Tau Sorority and a Henderson Alumni.

Johnoson has worked with all kinds of Greek life communities. Her philosophy is “you drive the bus.” This means that she is there to help, but it is up to the Greek life students to make the right decisions for themselves and their organizations.

An audience member asked Johnson, “it seems like the University can always find money for things they

want to find money for but when it comes to Greek life it always seems like when can never get any money for things that would be beneficial for us, such as a leadership conference.

If chosen for the position how would you help us get the money for things like that?”

“There is a leadership conference that is held for about 3,000 Greek students… that conference probably coast $300 per student,” Johnson said.

The last and final candidate for the Greek coordinator position was Beam. Beam is a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon and also an alumnus. He was a coordinator at the University of Alabama and Emory University. He wants to get Greek life back to what it was when he went to school. And Beam would like to give the students back control of their organizations.

“I would like to give you all (the Greek students) more reasonability.

But you have to show the university that you can take on the job,” Beam said.

The question was asked to all three candidates, what do you want the students and committee to remember about you as they make their decision?

“I want them to remember that I am real, I am the most transparent person you will ever meet.” McQueen said “I can get the job done.”

“That I have passion and talent to bring people together, and help people with development,” Johnson said.

“I am a real cheerleader. I like to push students and make them believe the sky is the limit,” Beam said

SOMETHING IN THE WATER Students research traces of mercury at conference STORY BY COLTON MCCUAN — GRAPHIC BY JORDAN JONES

Dr. Terry Bateman, Henderson chemistry professor, took students to the American Chemical Society’s annual conference in Denver over the summer to present ongoing research into water contamination from the abandoned mercury mine in the ghost town of Graysonia.

So far, surface and ground water samples have shown significant levels of mercury, according to Dr. Bateman.

Analyses now include wildlife in the area to look at bioaccumulation of mercury within the ecosystem.

“We’ve got a collaboration with Biology, and we’ve been gathering otter carcasses from all over this part of the state,” Bateman said. “Those apex predators are kind of like a canary in the coal mine for mercury.”

Among the apex predators being studied is a mountain lion carcass that was killed in the area last deer season.

The specimen is especially valuable due to its rarity in Arkansas and perch atop the food chain.

Ally Davis, junior chemistry major, has taken over as the lead student researcher for the project since the graduation of the previous leader, Hunter Wayland.

“Any kind of mercury is scary,” Davis said. “It’s at the point where you have almost one part per million in

otters and fish as well.”

One part per million is considered the upper threshold of a safe limit by the FDA, with some countries, such as Canada, setting a limit of half that.

All of this is part of a larger project by the chemistry department to analyze water quality throughout this area of the state over the next several years, not just for drinking water, but also in the water consumed by game and livestock.

Part of the project includes analyzing water along the Caddo and Ouachita watersheds for nitrates and other agricultural chemicals. For this aspect, Dr. Bateman has been working with high school girls as part of a “STEM girls” grant, a program whose goal it is to introduce high school girls to fields of study in which women are typically a small minority of the students.

“We want to look at the effects on wildlife, soil, plants,” Bateman said.

“This will be a long term, ongoing project. We hope to make all of the results available online in a searchable database.”

Dr. Bateman and Ally Davis, as well as other Henderson students, will be presenting their research next spring to the American Chemical Society’s meeting in San Diego. Research will also be sent to the US Geological Survey for review.

NEW YEAR, NEW OPPORTUNITIES

State approves new physics program

STORY BY CHRISTIAN PIERCE — GRAPHIC BY JORDAN JONES The physics department has received a new licensure. Rick McDaniel and Basil Miller have worked hard to get this new teacher licensure.

The licensurewas approved by the Arkansas Department of Education. Since Arkansas has a shortage of science teachers, this new license is a way to help train more science teachers.

“Our goal is to train employable and hard working science teachers,” Basil Miller, professor of physics, said.

According to the American Association of Physics Teachers(AAPT) website, “Only 47 percent of physics classes are taught by a teacher with a degree in the subject, compared with 73 percent of biology classes and about 80 percent of humanities classes,” AAPT.org This new physics license will draw more physics majors, and will continue for generations to come.

“Henderson is tied for second for UCA with graduating 8-9 physics majors a year,” Rick Mc-

Daniel, professor and chair at Henderson, said.”

Having physics graduates from Henderson every year, most of them have jobs as mechanical engineers, professors at universities, working in oil fields, petroleum engineers and computers programmers.

In order to receive this licensure, Basil Miller and Rick McDaniel had to take physic courses and educational core courses that will work up to a four year degree plan.

In a news release, McDaniel stated, “High school physics is a prerequisite for nearly all STEM careers. The shortage of physics teachers are leaving too many students unprepared for college study in STEM disciples.”

Although Henderson has a bachelor of science program, there are not any educational courses, or methods that are included, so students wouldn’t be able to teach.

A physics major that wants to teach is required

to pass all the Praxis exams, and enroll in a master of arts teaching program.

This new program has many of the courses from the physics degree. It also includes a teacher preparation curriculum and will also have field and clinical experiences.

For any graduates of this new program they would also have to pass all the Praxis exams, and be admitted in the educator preparation program.

They would then have to pass admission and exit interviews, along with more requirements.

Those that are successful will be able to teach after receiving their undergraduate degree.

This new program will create help and produce a higher rate of physic graduates at Henderson.

If anyone needs more information about this new program they can contact McDaniel or Miller. “ We hope that this program will be successful throughout the years to come,” McDaniel, said.

LET’S FLEE TO THE TREES Hammocks cover the campus STORY AND PHOTO BY KATIE SMITH Nearly 35 people came to “hang out” with the rec center last week. The Charles D. Dunn Recreation Center recently purchased 6 new Eno hammocks for students. They set them up on the South Lawn on Tuesday, allowing the students to try them out during dead hour.

The hammocks are now available for rent at $5 a day, or a discounted price for more than one day.

Faith Ledbetter, senior marketing major, said she plans to rent one often. When she stopped by, she explained she had been stressed about a test the next day, but the hammock helped her relax. “You know when you have so much to do, you go home and take a nap,” she said, “This is basically the same concept.”

The rec’s GA, Zachary Noga, said they have other new, fun things going on this semester.

They will be taking a guided Pinnacle Mountain climb and a Hot Springs Mountain climb. They will also be hosting other events, like a guided kayaking trip on Lake DeGray. These will be free to students, but any gear they may need will be available for rent at the rec.

ROCKK’N IN VEGAS FLEX ZONE — Morocco gleams with pride for his accomplishment

STORY BY ASHLEY SMITH — PHOTO BY DYLAN MCNIEL Morocco “Rockk” Arnold, 20 year old junior sports management major, returns from with a first place victory at the 2015 World Powerlifting Championship. Now considered an elite powerlifter, Arnold crushed the competition with a deadlift of 691 pounds, squat of 651 pounds and benched 430 pounds.

Arnold placed first in the class of heavyweights.

In powerlifting, judges add up the competitor’s bench, squat and deadlift weights. To be an elite powerlifter, competitors must make a combined score of 1728. Arnold beat that score by 42 pounds and made a combined score of 1770.

“Since I made the required weight, I’m an elite now, which is a hell of a good thing.” Arnold said.

847 powerlifters came from around the world to the competition, including places as far away as South Africa. Arnold said he met and befriended a lot of fellow powerlifters while there.

“People I barely knew were pumping me up,”

Arnold said. “We were all pumping each other up.”

Different weight classes competed on different days, and Arnold competed on the last day for the heavyweights class and won first place.

The competition was held in Las Vegas in the convention center of the West Gate Hotel. “I didn’t want to leave,” Arnold said. “Vegas is the furthest I’ve been away from home and it was an awesome place.” He attended a magic show, a concert, and got to play the slot machines while there.

The next competition is in Dubai, and Arnold definitely plans on attending and training until then. Arnold trains every day except weekends, which are his rest days. He is sponsored by Henderson Powerlifting, and has continually made them proud since.

“I used to be in every sport in high school,” Arnold said. “Basketball, track, football. But powerlifting is nothing like those. In powerlifting it’s just you, and you’re focused on yourself and your

goals.”

His coach in high school, Alex Harris, got him into powerlifting. “I was overweight, depressed, and had even gotten bullied. My coach told me about it and I’m still doing it today. It’s pretty cool to be considered an elite powerlifter at age 20.”

Arnold credits his coach Al Harris for helping him accomplish all that he has so far. His coach is a 14 time world champion and continues to be there for Arnold during training, meetings, and competing.

Arnold’s future plans include continuing to compete and opening a gym for anyone who would want to join.

“I want to open my own gym one day for anyone who wants to work out and excel,” Arnold said. “With working out you can improve so many things. Since my coach helped me, I want to help.”

HANDS ON IN THE COMMUNITY

The Reddie Spirit spread throughout the community Saturday morning as HSU students, staff, and faculty members went out to serve. Many of the organizations on campus also participated in giving back to the community.

“Service uplifts our blessings and we gain knowledge,” Eric Mitchner, junior Athletic Training major, said. Reddie to Serve is a community service program that has gone on for five years. Reddie volunteers assist those in the community who are in need; senior citizens, disabled individuals, and single parent households, as well as non-profit organizations such as schools and churches.

Volunteers do a great variety of projects such as raking, painting, feeding animals, gardening and mowing, and even taking out the tools and building.

“I had trees as high as the house,” Anetta Brackett, an Arkadelphia resident said, “Hayden did a great job.”

On this past Saturday morning volunteers went out into the streets of Arkadelphia.

“I enjoy helping others around the community and putting a big smile on their faces,” Telvin James, sophomore Social Science Education major said.

SERVING UP DINNER AND DISCOURSE Religion, music, and science

STORY BY CARMIN WILLS — GRAPHIC COURTESTY OF TODD BAUM On the Monday Sept. 28, the society of physics students (SPS) will host its first ever Science Café. This event will be held in the Reynolds Science building, room 131 at 5 p.m.

This is an entirely free event that will also serve a dinner of burgers and brats.

It will be like a mini “Nova” show with audience participation, Shannon Clardy, associate professor of physics, and the SPS adviser, said.

This will be a discussion of heretic, persons having opinions that contrast from what is generally accepted throughout history.

There will be a panel of three speakers: Megan Hickerson, associate professor of history, David Evans, professor of music, Jules Mollere, professor emeritus of physics.

They will discuss things like how Galileo was placed under house arrest for his work as a scientist, how music has at times had a controversial role in the church, and how some scientists were kicked out of the church. There will also be discussions of witchcraft throughout history.

“I think our panel will lead a very interesting discussion,” Clardy said.

chapter, Todd Baum, senior biology major, is excited about this new event. He encourages everyone to come learn about the history of science.

“We will learn about how religion, history, and music have influenced science,” Baum said.

The SPS also plans to have monthly meetings. They would like the biology, chemistry and physics clubs to have a role in planning future speakers.

“Hopefully we can eventually get the music and math departments involved also,” Baum said.

His hopes are to alternate between the departments so they will continue to have entertaining, fun events like this this to get people involved in science.

SPS also goes to local schools to speak and give physics demonstrations to encourage youngsters to develop an interest in science. This group is open to all majors.

If students on campus are interested in getting involved in the SPS, they can go to this event and check it out. Baum will be there to answer any questions about what all they do and how to join.

To: Kim Davis From: God Re: My Authority I’m writing to clarify my position on your citing Me as the reason you refused to issues marriage licenses to same-sex couples.

From my perch on high, I watched you refusing to issue any marriage licenses as a way to thwart same-sex couples. There’s no way I can sugarcoat this, Ms. Davis: your argument is flawed.

For one thing, in addition to the gay couples you denied, you trampled on the rights of all the heterosexual couples who wish to wed—most, no doubt, brother and sister Christians like you.

Invoking My name as the reason for your actions didn’t keep you out of jail, and now all of your deputy clerks are issuing the licenses, anyway (except, of course, for one, your son).

When that prospective gay groom shouted at you, “By whose authority…” were you denying issuing the licenses and you said, “God’s”—I woke up. (Sometimes I take a Sabbath on a weekday; I think it’s good to spice things up once in a while.) I checked my inbox and Twitter feed and saw there was absolutely nothing from you—nada.

(Note to Mr. Trump: I’m taking a point of personal privilege here throwing in a little Spanish).

When I heard you were using Me to justify your actions, I have to admit the first words that came out of my mouth were, “WTF!” (Some of the more prudish angels around here shot me dirty looks.)

I have been following the gay marriage debate since, well, forever (actually, I’ve been following everything since forever), and would like to enlighten you about a few things to you, including—but not now—my thoughts on biblical David’s and Jonathan’s “friendship.”

In the United States, clerks like you started issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts on May 17, 2004. A lot of people

who share your convictions said, “The sky will fall” and, “Marriage will be irreparably harmed.” Didn’t happen.

Just to be sure, over the next several weeks I frequently circled over Boston—(Fenway Park, actually; you may remember that 2004 was a heavenly year for the Red Sox).

If the sky did fall, I wanted to be there to protect the Prudential Center. Again, nada.

And, last I checked—a millisecond ago—there’s been zero impact on heterosexual marriage one way or the other.

Some marriages are going strong; some are troubled; some are just bumping along.

(I did hear from some straight couples who opined, “Gay marriage? Haven’t they suffered enough?” I chuckled so loudly the heavens shook.)

Not to pull rank on you with the old parental “Because I say so,” I did a little research for your benefit. Consider: Denmark gave equal rights to same-sex partners in 1989 (if not the right to marry per se), the first country in the world to do so. Norway was second, in 1993; Sweden followed in 1994; and Greenland in 1996; the Netherlands in 1997, Catalonia in 1998, Belgium in 1999, and, Germany in 2001. Holland’s Queen Beatrix signed the first same-sex marriage bill on December 21, 2000.

So, depending how you count, it’s been 26 years or 15 years and, although climate change has significantly made the planet’s future more precarious, the sky is still up there, fragile ozone layer and all.

I know you’ve been putting up a good fight, Ms. Davis, but it’s time to face the music—to listen to the heavenly choir, so to speak. When you said you were denying couples’ marriage licenses on My authority—without actually talking to me—I had to intervene.

From inside your jail cell you probably couldn’t hear the happy supporters of the gay couples outside the courthouse when your deputy clerks began issuing licenses. I could hear them, though, loud and clear. They boiled this whole sorry affair down to two words—two words that guide all I do: “Love wins.”

Let me know if you’d like to meet. My door’s always open.

OPINION BY DAX GUILLIAMS — PARODY IMAGE BY JORDAN JONES BASED ON AN IMAGE © WARNER BROS TELEVISION It was revealed recently that the greatest comic book duo in history are getting their own movie. No, its not Batman and Robin because those two nerds don’t compare to Booster Gold and Blue Beetle.

Warner Bros and DC are in the process of developing a movie featuring the two heroes together. What makes this even better is that Greg Berlanti, one of the main people involved in the Arrow and Flash tv shows, is set to direct and produce the film.

I’ve been a fan of comic books for many years and the very first comic I read was a Booster Gold comic my father had.

He’s one of my favorite fictional characters of all time and it’s so great to see him getting the fame he both deserves and craves.

Booster Gold has an incredibly interesting character. In the distant future, he was Michael Jon Carter, a college football player who lost it all when his deadbeat father returned to him and convinced him to bet against his own games. Once he was kicked out of college, Carter, who was now working a bad job in a museum, discovered that the main exhibits were former belongings of previous superheroes.

Carter used his knowledge of engineering and robotics to restore an old supersuit and even a time machine to return to modern times and become a superhero to gain fame and fortune. He later discovered that he didn’t want to use his gifts for money and he became a true superhero.

Blue Beetle has also had quite a history in comics. Many people have used the name, but Ted Kord was the Blue Beetle that became so popular.

He was a man who used his vast wealth and intelligence to become a superhero, similar to how Batman does, but Blue Beetle is better because he actually smiles once in awhile.

The two characters have had many appearances together and even became best friends. And because how great they work as a duo makes me have high hopes for the film.

Even though DC has said that they did not want any humor in their cinematic universe, they have stated that it will be a funny and serious movie with many similarities to buddy cop films.

This is what Booster Gold and Blue Beetle fans have been wanting for so long.

The two have always been considered to make television appearances, whether it be them getting their own shows or appearing in the Flash series.

Both of them would be amazing in a buddy cop film. You have Booster Gold joking around, getting involved in time travel shenanigans, while Blue Beetle plays things seriously, but somehow gets mixed up in the comedy.

Plus, these two have been consistantly good throughout the years. Ask a DC fan about recent Batman or Wonder Woman comics and watch them cry, but ask them about Booster Gold and Blue Beetle and watch them tell you to get the hell away from them.

That proves the writers are doing something good with them.

The last few years of the DC universe, the New 52, was very kind to the two characters. Booster Gold and his comics were quite possibly the best part of the New 52 and he’s still a great character in the current universe.

I hope this film does so well, it makes DC wake up and see that not everything they do needs to be so dark that you have shine a flashlight on the screen to see the action. Comedic characters that also get involved in serious issues have a large following and are important to their universe.

I’m also hoping that this movie does so well that they make a Justice League

International movie. So not only will Blue and Gold be on the big screen, but also Guy Gardner, Power Girl, the other people that I like but don’t care about as much.

The JLI and its members have also done very well in their recent comics. The last JLI series that was done was even a New York Times Bestseller.

And come on, everyone knows that the JLI are better than the Justice League because the JLI have Booster Gold and Blue Beetle. You can’t deny what’s true.

And even though Blue and Gold are sometimes the comic relief, they’re not all comedy. Anyone who knows about Ted Kord’s history knows this well.

The two face constant tragedy, but still manage to make themselves and readers

laugh. It’s just fun reading about the crazy situations they always find themselves in.

It has been said that it may not be the Ted Kord version of the Blue Beetle, but he will instead be the Jamie Reyes version.

While I’d rather have Kord since he and Gold work together so well, Reyes is an interesting character too and he has pretty good chemistry with Gold.

It’ll be so refreshing to see these two involved in DC’s cinematic universe since they’ll add some comedy and character to a universe filled with dark, depressing visuals and characters that are being made as dark as possible.

With the team behind Arrow and Flash making the film, I expect it will be a movie I’ll enjoy. Blue and Gold are great characters that should part of DC’s main cast.

ADAIR FAIR Adair Park, 358 Central Ave. Every Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Free Adair Fair will consist of live music (2 performances on Friday evenings and 4 performances on Saturdays) such as solo performers, duets, and bands using acoustic or electric instruments such as string, brass wind, or percussion. Next to the stage artisans displays or demonstrations will be set up to do demonstrations, mini lessons, and accepting commissions. Some art included may be henna tattoos, stained glass, face painting, skateboard painting, painters, caricature, and portraiture. There will also be performing artists such as jugglers and juggling lessons, belly dancers and belly dancing lessons, square dancers and lessons, magicians, plays, and storytellers.

FOCUS — Drew Greenwood, senior, watches his drive fly down the fairway Price Murphree, junior, and Gil Debusscher, senior, shot even-par 72 on Tuesday, September 15.

Murphree garnered a score of 27, thus tying him in 31st place with senior, Wess Webb. Debusscher had a total of 223, placing him at 26th place.

“The highlight (for me) was that I managed to shoot two good rounds after starting with a terrible 79,” said Debusscher. “I am super pumped about the coming tournament. We have a great team so we want to do great things this year.”

Drew Greenwood, senior, tied for 22nd place for the best individual round of the conference. Greenwood posted

a 67 in the final round of the tournament.

With a final round score of 75, Kevin Boutier, freshman, competed with three Reddies – all performing as individuals. Boutier finished in tied position of 18th and as the top overall finisher for Henderson with a 221 total.

“This upcoming week our guys are playing in Bartlesville, OK at the NSU Classic hosted by Northeastern State”, said Sam Lavelle, graduate assistant golf coach.

Let us all cheer on the Henderson State male golf team in hopes of a great tournament and victory.

DRIVEN — wwSarah Wright, sophomore, follows her shot from the tee box Lady Reddie Golf is set to tee off on another great season in hopes of improving to number one in the Great American Conference this season.

After falling just shy last season and having to settle for runner-up, Coach Forrest Schultz and the Lady Reddies are set to take a drive at the Championship.

While the ladies lost graduate Allyson Harris who tied for 13th at the NCAA Regional Invitation last season, they will welcome back four of their top five finishers in the GAC from last season.

Sophomores Alison Davis (9th) and Sarah Wright (21st) will be expected to be on their game, meanwhile junior Erin Brown (13th) and senior Kate Kilponen (11th) will be leading the team on their hunt for gold.

According to Hunter Lively, notable freshmen Christian Barrett and Luisa Gartmann posted scores of 160 and 161 respectively at this week’s Northeastern State Invitational.

HSU (2¬1) escaped with a 25¬17 win against NWOSU. Coach Scott Maxfield reached the 100 win mark after Saturday nights game against NWOSU. HSU quickly struck first when Corey Chappell returned the opening kick-off 100 yards to the house. teams not allowing any points until late in the quarter when NWOSU scored on a 35 yard field goal by Will Hawkins which made the score 8¬3, HSU. HSU scored at the beginning of the second quarter with a 26 yard field goal by Houston Ray to increase HSU’s lead to 11¬3.

The Reddies would score again at the 8:50 mark of the second quarter thanks to their defense.

Lawson Schulz picked off a Reid Miller pass and returned it 45 yards for a Henderson touchdown.

After an extra point try by Ray was successful, the Reddies pushed the lead to 18¬3 into halftime.

HSU’s defense struck quickly at the beginning of the third quarter with a Tavares Garner interception.

The Reddie offense would have great field position getting the ball at NWOSU’s 33 yard line.

Jaquan Cole would end the short drive by getting into the end-zone with a 18 yard rushing touchdown.

After Ray made the extra point try, HSU increased the lead to 25-3. NWOSU would mount a serious charge in the fourth quarter.

Dallas Hardison threw an interception to NWOSU’s Jordan Norris. Norris returned the interception back for a touchdown to cut the lead to 25¬10, HSU.

After a three and out by HSU, NWOSU scored again after Miller connected with Arte’ Miura Jr. for a 55 yard touchdown pass to cut the score to a single score game 25¬17, HSU. Neither team would score again for the rest of the game. Henderson’s defense held serve for the remainder of the game.

Kenrick Burns picked off a Miller pass in the closing seconds of the game to end NWOSU’s hopes of tying the game.

HSU’s next game will be at home Saturday against Southwestern Oklahoma State University. Kick-off is at 2 p.m.
