Trump’s Immigration order and how it affects us Story by Emily R. Bell, Editor in Chief and Serene Garcia, Student Reporter

Three international students are sticking close to campus and following the news after the President of the United States essentially nullified their student visas last week. On Jan. 27, President Donald Trump issued an executive order to bar individuals from seven countries from entering the United States for the next 90 days.

These countries include Iraq, Syria, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, and Yemen.

“At this point, we’ve even advised them (the international students) not to venture too far out of Arkadelphia just in case,” Dr. Drew Smith, director of international programs, said of the affected students at Henderson.

“We have also talked to the rest of our international students about what to expect and prepare for in the possible event that this one day affects them.”

Many are concerned that Trump’s order specifically targets countries that have mostly Islamic citizens. The order directly expresses that its purpose is to prevent terrorists from entering the country. But also states, “The United States cannot, and should not, admit those who do not support the Constitution, or those who would place violent ideologies over American law. In addition, the United States should not admit those who engage in acts of bigotry or hatred…or those who would oppress Americans of any race, gender, or sexual orientation.”

Resistance to this order first arose when students, visitors, and greencard-holding legal U.S. residents from these seven countries were halted access into the country at airports immediately after the ban was issued.

Many were not allowed entrance and were forced to travel back to their native countries.

Protests against the order and in support of immigrants quickly spread across the nation.

On Wednesday, Tonya Smith, executive director of marketing and communications, sent an email about Trump’s order to all students, staff, and faculty. In it she states that the administration has advised international students “to remain in the country regardless of their immigration status until the ramifications of the executive order are clarified.”

International student Osman Ftaes, a sophomore management major, came to school here from Libya, one of the countries targeted. He was saddened and disappointed by the order when he heard the news, but was also

given hope by the thousands of people seen protesting in Boston, Chicago, and elsewhere across the country.

“We were, at the beginning, afraid of people’s reactions after the order’s release since many Arkansans voted for Trump,” Ftaes said of Henderson’s international students. “But then, we realized that we are really safe here; everybody at HSU reached out to us, offering help and showing love and support.”

Among those at the university who reached out to students were Dr. Lewis Shepherd, vice president for student and external affairs, Dr. Drew Smith, and Dr. Glendell Jones, university president. In Arkadelphia, ministers came together to hold a vigil to show their support for international students and citizens. Many Henderson international students joined the vigil, and were comforted and appreciative of the show of support.

“We are very concerned for our students and their well-being and we are closely monitoring developments related to the executive order. We remain steadfast in our commitment to providing a safe and positive experience for all of our students,” President Jones said. “I encourage all of our students, faculty, and staff to join me in reaching out to our international students and offer our support during this difficult time.”

To many, Trump’s order seems excessive since most foreign visa processes take two years or more for approval. It is already difficult enough to obtain a visa, specifically for those in Libya, since it lacks an embassy. Libyan citizens must travel to the nearest U.S. embassy to apply for their visa, and many get denied.

International students at the university are here with an F1 visa, which is a non-immigrant visa for people who want to study in America. However, F1 visas are not on the list of exceptions from Trump’s executive order.

“Any student from a banned country would not be allowed to reenter if they left the U.S., which is why we have advised them not to travel,” Blake Smith, student recruitment specialist, said.

Ftaes, along with his fellow international students, has been fighting for his rights by showing people how human and real they are. “We are not killers or terrorists as the media markets, and many have already changed their ideas just by speaking to me for a short time.”

Since the order’s release, a federal judge blocked a part of the order to at least allow travelers held at airports to enter the U.S. More recently, a second federal judge, Judge James Robart of the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals, upheld the stay of the order until further notice, at least temporarily allowing students and others with visas to once more enter the U.S. The Trump administration has vowed to appeal this decision, which may ultimately be decided by the U.S. Supreme Court.

Ftaes expressed his hope that the American government doesn’t break its reputation of freedom. “This great nation has reached that freedom, where everyone else in this massive world is paying with their lives as a cost to get to such a point,” Ftaes said. “Hopefully America will stay as it always was, a great nation, a model of freedom, and foremost a form of humanity.”

Flu you

You wake up one morning and as you sit up in bed, the room begins to spin like a top. Suddenly, some imaginary sledge hammer cracks down on the top of your skull, leaving you with a headache you thought only existed in nightmares.

You think back to last night, and even though it was Thursday, you know that this is no frat party hangover. No, this is something much worse.

Something much more sinister.

You reach for the door handle, but collapse to the floor instead. Lying there in complete and utter agony, your eyes open wide as the realization hits you: This is probably the freaking flu! Didn’t Mom say that Great Aunt Thelma had the flu?

Yep. She did. Turns out that godawful old lady kiss was even worse than you thought.

Now there’s no doubt in your mind. You have the flu. And you are going to die.

Okay, so maybe the scenario above is a tad dramatic. Maybe you won’t actually croak, but one thing’s for sure: flu season is right around the corner, and catching it really sucks.

Luckily, the wonderful world of medicine has us covered. Flu vaccinations, or flu shots, greatly reduce the chances of falling under the weather, and it’s not too late to get yours!

Experts at the CDC make it clear that influenza activity is on the rise, especially in areas of the

South (spoiler alert: Arkansas is in the South).

February is expected to see the peak of this activity, which basically means a lot more people are about to get sick.

Not everyone has had the experience of contracting influenza, but those who have can confirm that it’s no picnic.

Erykah Boehler, a freshman psychology major, recently got over the bug and elegantly described the experience in just a few words.

“It was f---ing horrid.”

Indeed.

The flu is very good at what it does. Severe headaches, coughing fits, high fevers, and sore throats are just a few of the symptoms.

If you do get sick, you shouldn’t expect to ‘power through’ and continue on with everyday life. Most likely, you’ll be enjoying the next miserable 48 hours in your dark bedroom, with only Netflix to keep you company as you fade in and out of consciousness.

Even after the virus has left your body, expect a nice bout of post-viral fatigue for up to two weeks.

Unless all of this is just your cup of tea, you should probably get vaccinated soon. Tami Arnold, one of the registered nurses with Henderson Student Health Services, is happy to point students in the right direction.

According to Arnold, students can get a free flu shot at the Clark County Health Department, which is located at 605 South 10th Street here in Arkadelphia.

“This can be done as a walk-in visit,” she said.

To reiterate, that’s a FREE flu shot, no appointment necessary. Walk in, get poked, and you’re good! The Clark County Health Department’s hours are 8am–4:30pm.

Yes, needles are scary. And, yeah, it might even sting a little. But I can promise you that it’s not nearly as bad as the fate that awaits you if you catch the flu.

So, go on down to 10th street and take advantage of this opportunity.

Go. Like, right now.

President’s Concert goes out with a bang of keys Event Summary by Emily Bell, Editor in Chief

Saturday night, the annual president’s concert filled up Harwood Recital Hall in the Russel Fine Arts building. The event honored Dorothy Morris, founder of the Morris Foundation which supports over 50 nonprofit organizations every year.

The night consisted of classical pieces performed by top music students from the department, and members of the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra. Wesley Lamendola, sophomore music education major, and Tanner Oglesby, senior music education major, captivated the crowd with operatic pieces in original Italian. A stunning euphonium cooncerto by Raven Morris, sophomore music education major, even wowed fellow music students in the audience.

The concert ended with a dramatic, powerful piano concerto, “Allegro Affettuoso,” by Ariya Tai, sophomore music performance major.

Henderson fraternity takes a twist on the typical Tuesday night. Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia hosted Open Mic Night Tuesday, Jan. 31. The event was held in the Banquet room of the Garrison Center at Henderson State University.

This was Phi Mu Alpha’s first Open Mic Night.

“I think it was a great success and that even though we might have had a small crowd, it was still a really good opportunity to try to recruit for our fraternity,” Dale Grimm, senior music education major, said. The night contained several dif ferent performanc es from cover songs, originals, poetry, and a lot of guitar playing.

The mic tossed back and forth be tween performanc es fluently without any hesitation from the performers.

Members of the fraternity gathered together for a few traditional songs Graphic by Natasha Cribbs and even brought

the girls up front to give them an old-fashioned serenade. One member conducted the song as the others carried the tune. At one point in the night, phones were used as mock lighters swaying through the air. Laughter and smiles were seen throughout the room.

Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia is a music fraternity composed of men from a variety of majors. “It’s really nice to see that there are some really talented people who aren’t Sinfonias, and I really hope that they are interested,” vice president Robert Nix, junior aviation management major, said. Sinfonia became a national fraternity on Oct. 6, 1900 with the admission of a group of men at the Broad Street Conservatory in Philadelphia per the official website of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Fraternity of America. “We’re all about music and forwarding music in America,” Nix said.

Open Mic Night was open to all of Henderson’s student body. Phi Mu Alpha encouraged all who were interested to participate. “Definitely in years to come we’ll try and make this maybe a semester event,” president Tim Breshears, junior music composition major, said. Whether it was to blow off some steam or to find out more about the fraternity, Open Mic Night strived for both.

The performers chose various genres of music.

Songs from famous plays were sung, and even a few Disney classics were chosen such as, “A Whole New World,” from Aladdin. Other cover songs included, “Say Something,” by A Great Big World, “Halleluiah,” by Leonard Cohen, and “It’s Been Awhile,” by Staind. Numerous originals were also performed throughout the night. Duets and trios also made a few appearances.

The crowd joined in on a lot of songs they were familiar with. As the music flowed, so did the complimentary coffee and conversation. The crowd filled about three full tables. “Numbers have never been a big part of Phi Mu Alpha. We’re more about the quality over quantity,” said Nix. The event lasted a little under two hours without a moment of silence. As the night came to an end, the brothers of Phi Mu Alpha along with everyone else in the room gathered around and interlocked arms while singing the traditional Henderson Reddies Alma Mater.

A storm of new movies

Opinion by Dax Guilliams, Opinion Editor Graphic by Natasha Cribbs, Graphic Designer I’m always looking forward to the next movie based on a comic book or a certain comic book character. So many great comics have been adapted into movies and this year, there are so many comic book movies to look forward to.

Later this week, the animated “Justice League Dark” movie will be released and it looks to continue DC’s amazing record when it comes to their animated films.

“Justice League Dark” is based off

the comics of the same name that follow a specific team of “Justice League” members who are experts at dealing with the supernatural.

Characters such as Batman, Zatanna, Deadman, John Constantine, Etrigan and other interesting characters are the main characters featured in the movie.

Out of every movie on this list, the one that will probably be the best is “Logan,” the next “Wolverine” movie and the last one to have

Hugh Jackman playing the character.

“Logan” takes a lot of subject material from the “Old Man Logan” comics, which are some of the best comics Marvel has made in the past few years. This will also be the first movie to feature X-23, Wolverine’s clone/daughter who is such a cool character.

Plus, it’s rated R, so that means a lot of people are gonna get stabbed with some claws and that’s always something that’s cool to see. “Logan” will be released on March 3.

A movie that a lot of people are getting excited for is “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2,” which will be in theaters on May 5.

The first “Guardians of the Galaxy” movie was one of Marvel’s best movies and I’m looking forward to this one since a big part of the story is Star-Lord discovering more about his father, Ego the Living Planet, who is being played by Kurt Russell.

On June 2, “Wonder Woman” will be released and everyone loves Wonder Woman. She was the best part about “Batman v Superman” and is the best thing about DC’s cinematic universe so far.

I’m very skeptical when it comes to DC’s live-action movies, but I have high hopes for “Wonder Woman.” I think Gal Gadot is a great actress who really understands the character and that alone gives me hope for this movie.

While the character has had a few hit or miss movies, Spider-Man’s next movie, “Spider-Man:

Homecoming,” looks to be the best one yet.

We first got to see this version of the character in “Captain America: Civil War” and that’s the main reason I’m looking forward to “Spider-Man: Homecoming.” Tom Holland did such a great job as Spider-Man in “Civil War” and I’m sure he’ll be even better for his own movie.

But the main reason I’m looking forward to this movie is that Michael Keaton will be playing the villain, Vulture, and he’s an amazing actor. The film will be released on July 7.

One of the movies that I think will really take the Marvel cinematic universe by storm is “Thor: Ragnarok,” which will be released on Nov. 3.

This movie will deal with a really cool event in Nordic mythology, but with Marvel’s version of the characters, who are much more interesting. Chris Hemsworth’s Thor gets better as a character with each film he’s in.

My favorite thing about this movie is that Jeff Goldblum will be playing the character Grandmaster.

I am so excited to see one of the most powerful characters in the Marvel universe being played by Jeff Goldblum.

This is a good year for comic book movies and the people who enjoy them. I’m looking forward to all of these movies and I’m so glad comic book movies have had this level of quality.

The cold didn’t keep the Reddies from performing last weekend as they won three of three games to start their season with an undeniable bang. Pittsburg State University and the University of Arkansas at Fort Smith were the two teams that fell to the Reddies men’s baseball team.

The first of the trilogy of games began at 2 p.m. in Fort Smith on Friday and was played against Pittsburg State.

There were no scores until the third inning when the Reddies put up the first point with a score by Alan Hall resulting from a single hit up the middle

by Jordan Taylor.

It wasn’t until the fifth inning that the Reddies scored again by way of a Parker Jones double which caused Joe Myers to score. Two innings later, the Reddies scored again, this time with an Alan Hall double which allowed Joe Myers to gain his second consecutive score of the game.

Later in the seventh, Parker Jones smacked an air-ball to right field that sent Alan Hall to third and allowed Brentten Schwaab to cross home plate.

This put the Reddies at four and Pitt State at zero until the seventh and eighth innings when the opposing team scored a solitary point for each one.

The final tally of the game saw Reddies come out on top with a score of four to two.

A couple of hours after they took down PSU, the men were locked, loaded and prepared for another challenge. Their next game was against the University of Arkansas at Fort Smith.

The third inning proved to be a

marker for the first points scored for the second game in a row as Brentten Schwaab scored on a fly ball hit from Jordan Taylor. Another score came shortly after when Kearon Redmon walked and sent Alan Hall from third to home.

For six innings, the game remained stagnant, at least in terms of scores.

The ninth inning saw Alan Hall and Joe Myers score to bring the game to a close with the Reddies taking down UAF at a score of four to zero.

The conquering that the Reddies took part in on Friday acted as a lead up for Saturday when they would really show their true colors against PSU for a second time. Hall brought the game to a start with a score from another Taylor hit in the first inning.

A three inning gap came between scores, then the fourth and fifth innings saw PSU score in each. The sixth inning came along and saw Parker Jones and Jordan Taylor score.

The last scores of the game came in the seventh inning when Hall, Jones, Taylor and Hayden Lessenberry all scored. This brought the game to an overpowering score of the Reddies nine and Pitt State two.

If any conclusion can be reached from the first three games of the season, it’s that the Reddies aren’t going to take any prisoners this year. Fans can look forward to one of the best years in recent memory for Reddies’ baseball.

The men’s next game is Wednesday at 6 p.m. at home against the University of Nebraska at Kearney.

Henderson State men’s and women’s basketball returned to action on Thursday night in the Duke Wells Center for a doubleheader against Southeastern Oklahoma State University.

Looking to bounce back from two road losses last weekend in Oklahoma, the Reddie women came out hot early, but stumbles in the second half gave Southeastern Oklahoma the victory 81-65.

In the opening quarter, Hailey Estes scored 12 points to lead the Reddies, and by the end of the quarter the Reddies would lead 26-20.

In the second quarter, the Reddies managed only 15 points, but would lead 41-37 at the break. Estes only managed 1 point in the second period for 13 points at the break.

After halftime, the Reddies succumbed to the pressure, and were outscored 21-16 in the third and Southeastern led 58-57. The Reddies still had a fighting chance entering the final quarter, but poor shooting led to the final nail for the Reddies.

In the fourth quarter, Southeastern outscored the Reddies 23-8, and the Reddies only connected on three field goals in the final period.

Estes finished with a team high 19 points and 8 rebounds, and Blu Jones added 11 points. The Reddies finished the game only connecting on 23 of 63 shots from the field.

“We have given up 80 points in our last five losses, and we are going to have to come out with a different defense,” said Jill Thomas, women’s coach.

In the second game of the doubleheader, Henderson claimed a thrilling 87-85 victory, despite Southeastern’s Anton Cook scoring 46 points.

The Reddies came out in the first half very sluggish and found themselves down 33-18 at the 5:39 mark in the first half. They began to chip away at the deficit as Matt Panaggio would score a layup and then hit two free throws to cut the deficit to 33-22.

The crowd came to life when DJ Franklin hit a three-point shot to make it 33-25, and then hit another threepoint shot at the 3:57 mark to make it 33-28.

When halftime arrived, the game was tied at 38, with Kaylon Tappin and DJ Franklin leading the Reddies with 8 points each.

The Reddies came out of the locker room looking for a victory, but not before Cook would hit 5 of 7 shots from beyond the arc for the Savage Storm.

The Reddies held an 86-83 lead with 26 seconds remaining, before Jett Jobe would sink two free throws for the Storm. With 9 seconds left Pannaggio would sink one of two free throws.

Cook would try a three from the left corner at the buzzer, but missed. The Reddies would survive a thriller 87-85.

The Reddies were led by Tappin with 26 points, while Brad Narrin added 13 points and 7 rebounds. DJ Franklin would finish with 12 points while connecting on 2 for 2 from beyond the arc.

On Feb. 9 at the University of Arkansas at Monticello women’s tip is set for 5:30pm and men’s tip is to follow at 7:30 p.m.
