As usual, Henderson had a fun filled week planned for the incoming freshman. Last Tuesday, new Reddies were all set to attend a campus wide street dance.

Unfortunately, the weather had other plans, and it began to pour down rain just before the event. However, that did not stop the new Reddies from having their fun. The street dance was moved to the Garrison Ballroom. Great music, light up dance floors, and a friendly and fun community combined together to make a night to remember.

DJ Dooley ran the show, keeping students on their feet. Several people even participated in impromptu dance-offs as the music blasted. The Greeks were also involved, proudly holding up their letters.

Tori Roberson, freshman accounting major, joined up with some friends for the party.

“Even though I got totally lost on my way to the dance, I had a really good time with everybody.”

Along with the dance, many other activities, held by Henderson, were enlisted for the incoming freshmen. Immediately starting the week off, sno cones were handed out on move in day to help keep students cooled off and relaxed. Later that day, students met on the quad for water games.

Also included in freshman week were cookouts, live music, scavenger hunts, the playfair, and the viewing of the solar eclipse on the south lawn.

Even with classwork looming overhead, Henderson is sure to have more fun right around the corner.

There will be a Henderson Against Hate event on campus today in response to the events in Charlottesville, VA. All students were emailed a newsletter from Henderson that contains the following address.

“Henderson Against Hate. One of Henderson State University’s vital core values is a dedication to human value and difference.

Life in a university setting is about learning and being inclusive. We often hear ideas that challenge our established viewpoints, and these challenges help us grow to be leaders in our communities and careers.

The Henderson Against Hate gathering, planned for 12:30 p.m. Tuesday on the front steps of Arkansas Hall, is designed to create an extended learning environment for all members of our community.

It is a celebration of the human value and difference that we prize as a university community.

The event is not a protest, and we expect participants in the event to show respect for one another’s viewpoints and opinions.

We do not have to agree in order to listen and learn from one another.”

The gathering was arranged by students and is not a rally. The Henderson Against Hate event is similar to may other campus’s response to hate around the nation.

News of this event comes just over a week after Hot Springs was host to a nonviolent gathering that featured white supremacists and members of ANTIFA.

Times are changing on college campuses across Arkansas. Becoming effective this school year, a new law allows citizens with a concealed carry license and the proper training to bring handguns into state or government buildings. This means certain individuals can bring handguns into our public buildings on campus. Some bars, sporting events, and the Capitol are all places in which a carrier can bring a gun under authorization of law.

Prior to, state universities could opt out of being able to have concealed carry on campus for employees. Handguns were allowed in locked cars that were parked in the parking lot or street and left unattended by the carrier before this law.

The signs around campus said that weapons were “prohibited on campus.” Now, it states “prohibited unless authorized by Arkansas law.” Guns were not allowed in public buildings except to a limited few: law enforcement officers, security guards, and state or federal military personnel. The new exception is referred to as “enhanced carry.”

Specific rules, regulations and training procedures are still being discussed and should be available by January of 2018.

Who can be a licensee?

You must be 21 but can be 18 if a current or former active duty member. A person must have up to eight hours of the required training. An exception to this rule would be someone with previous training, such as military or a police officer. Training cannot be completed until 2018 and will not cost more than a nominal amount. To get one, an individual must apply with Arkansas police.

What can be carried with this license?

Handguns with a barrel length less than 12 inches, are not fully automatic weapons, and are designed to be fired with one hand.

How can it be carried?

The weapon must be concealed from obvious so to prevent public view. This includes it being in a holster or pants, if it is covered.

It is not open carry. The gun must be on your person always.

How can a handgun be stored?

It can be left in a locked and unattended car in the parking lot or street. It can’t be in an office or locker. As stated before, it must be on you all the time. This also applies to residence halls or dormitory where they are permitted if the handgun is on the person.

The handgun cannot be stored in a residence hall. Faculty and staff members must abide by this as well.

Exceptions?

An attendee may not carry a concealed weapon to a disciplinary/grievance meeting unless at least 24 hours notice is given.

Proper paperwork must be filled out and a notice must be posted on the door that states a handgun is in the area. The area must be no larger than needed to complete the meeting and cannot last more than nine hours.

A concealed carry weapon is not allowed at a collegiate athletic meeting, though it is allowed at an event.

Will others know if someone has a gun?

No, unless it applies with the disciplinary/ grievance meeting rule. A carrier must not make it known they have a gun. No students, faculty or staff may request a list of concealed carriers. The university cannot have a list of

licensed carriers. This is made confidential by law. Only a law enforcement officer can request a carrier to show them their weapon.

Saturday night, the first annual Recreation Festival was held on the Formby Practice field.

The event began at 9:00 p.m. and lasted until midnight.

Events included baggo, kan-jam, yardzee, washer boards, chippo, glow in the dark can jam, hungry hungry hippo with real people, and the major event was glow in the dark ultimate frisby.

There was also free food, perhaps the most appealing thing to students. Some food that was offered includes corn dogs, funnel cakes, lemonade, grilled hot dogs, and snow cones.

Diominique McKissick, station manager at KSWH, brought the station’s sound equipment and rocked the field.

One free semester of housing was also given away at Rec Fest.

Student activities board just announced fall’s movie lineup. Nine more films will screen in the Garrison this fall.

On Friday, Sept. 1 and Sunday, Sept. 3, “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales” will screen. The film has a 29% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, but it made almost $800 million worldwide.

“Wonder Woman” comes up next. Patty Jenkins’ acclaimed film garnered a 92% rating on RT, and it made $406 million in North America alone. It will screen on Friday, Sept. 15 and Sunday, Sept. 17.

“Transformers: The Last Knight” will be shown on Friday, Sept. 22 and Sunday, Sept, 24. Rotten Tomatoes has it at 15%, but it made over $600 million worldwide.

Edgar Wright’s “Baby Driver” will be shown on Friday, Sept. 29 and Sunday, Oct. 1. The film has garnered a 94% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The Ansel Elgort and Kevin Spacey starrer

has raked up $194 million worldwide on a budget of $34 million.

The hit animated film “Despicable Me 3” scored a 61% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It made $971 million worldwide. The Steve Carrell lead flick will debut at HSU on Friday, Oct. 6 and will play again on Sunday, Oct. 8.

“Spiderman: Homecoming,” which nabbed a 92% score and made over $730 million worldwide will screen on Friday, Oct. 20 and Sunday, Oct. 22.

The surprisingly successful “Annabelle: Creation” will show on Friday, Oct. 27 and Sunday, Oct. 29. It scored a 67% score on RT and has so far grossed $215 million worldwide.

“The Emoji Movie,” which has an eight percent on Rotten Tomatoes and has made $144 million worldwide on a budget of $50 million will show on Friday, Nov. 3 and Sunday, Nov. 5.

The final film of the year will be “The Lego Ninjago Movie.” It has yet to be released in theatres.

Edgar Wright’s acclaimed film “Baby Driver” will screen in the Garrison Center this fall.

Annual DeGray Lake Clean-Up Day Do something good for the community if you’re not busy. After a busy summer, the lake is usually due for some good old fashioned clean up. Citizens will be cleaning on Saturday, Sept. 23 at 134 Iron Mountain Marina Dr. Amity Trade Days From Sept. 7-10, fun goers can attend Amity Trade Days. The Farmhouse A new store opened in Arkadelphia over the summer. The Farmhouse opened in downtown Arkadelphia on Main Street. Offering candles, homemade soaps, candy and more, check out all of their goodies if you need an afternoon of shopping.

Brick City Pizza It’s not just pizza. Burgers, subs and calzones are just a few of the menu items offered at Brick City Pizza. Ice cream is also available. A lunch buffet is open every day and they have delivery that is not just limited to pizza.

Top 10 restaurants to eat at in Arkadelphia according to yelp Story by Pete Tubbs, Editor in Chief Arkadelphia doesn’t feature the most expansive list of restaurants, but it may have more than you thought. Here are the ten best restaurants in the Delp, according to Yelp. #1- Slim & Shorty’s Slim and Shorty’s is located at 617 Clinton Street in the Delph. It’s menu is a bit pricy, coming in at $11-30. Their business hours are accomodating if you’re planning an evening dinner, however, as they stay open until 9:00 p.m. every day except for Sundays. They close at a much earlier 8:30 then. #2- Hamburger Barn You can find the Hamburger Barn at 2813 Pine St. in Arkadelphia. It’s got things such as salad, burgers and more burgers. Its prices are the same as S&S’s at $11-30, and they, too stay open until 9 most days. On Fridays and Saturdays they close at 9:30, while on Sundays they shut their doors at 2:00 p.m..

#3- The Cue Eatery and Poolhall If you’re looking for a more adult-oriented dining spot, then look no further than The Cue. They close at 11:00 p.m. on Mon.-Wed., midnight on Fri. and Sat. and 10:00 p.m. on Sundays. They have a full bar and a nice selection of pool tables to roll some balls on.

The prices are estimated at $11-30. #4- Java Primo If you’re looking for a laid-back place to study or to read a book, Java Primo’s got a warm booth waiting for you. With an impressive range of coffees and foods, and with a price average of under $10, Java sounds like just the place for a college student. #5- Big Cheese Pizza and Frozen Treats Big Cheese stays open until 10:00 p.m. every day except for Fri. and Sat. when they stay open until 11:00 p.m.. They have all sorts of pizza and frozen treats, and their price

average is below $10. #6- River Ridge Another pizza joint, River Ridge has you covered when you want some flat italian cheese circles. With a price range of less than $10, who can blame their high ranking? #7- Andy’s The popular chain restaurant must really pack a punch. With a price average of less than $10 and a wide range of super-fast foods, Andy’s looks like a deal. #8- El Zacatecano The only mexican foods restaurant in the top eight, El Z’s has a large menu and prices that range under $10.

Spring Fling

The solar eclipse wows Arkadelphia Event Summary by Pete Tubbs, Editor in Chief Pictures by Shannon Clardy, Associate Professor of Physics

The first total solar eclipse in the United States since 1979 (since 1991 if you’re from Hawaii) occured last Monday. Dozens of Henderson State employees and students gathered behind Reynolds Science building to view the phenomenon.

Shannon Clardy, associate professor of physics used a special camera lense and a pinhole eclipse viewer to get rare images of the alignment of the

earth, moon and sun. This is the best view that Arkansas have had of a solar eclipse in nearly 100 years.

The Huie Library passed out viewing goggles for eye protection and several 38 years ago a total solar eclipse happened, but it was only visible in parts of Montana, Washington, Idaho and Canada. In 1991, parts of Hawaii

witnesssed a total solar eclipse.

Parts of Northern Arkansas were able to see 95% of the sun covered. In Arkadelphia, however, only about 90% of the sun was covered.

If one missed this year’s eclipse, they will just have to wait seven more years. In 2024 a total eclipse will be viewable in Little Rock.

“Birth of the Dragon” is the worst martial arts movie I’ve ever seen in my life. I know that spoils this review so quickly, but people need to know how bad this movie is.

“Birth of the Dragon” was advertised to be about the true story of how Bruce Lee had to fight another martial artist, Wong Jack Man, in a no holds barred fight. This movie takes all of the true events and changes them all to be worse than what actually happened.

First of all, this movie isn’t even about Bruce Lee. He’s just a side character to Steve McKee, a random guy who knows Lee. The main problem with this is that Steve McKee does not exist. He’s a fictional character that they added to this movie for whatever reason. He was probably just added to make it worse because that’s all he did.

McKee is easily one of the worst characters ever made. All he does is whine and get Lee in trouble, forcing Lee to get into fights.

That’s what this movie is actually about.

McKee falls for some woman and Lee has to fight Wong Jack Man to free her from evil guys.

This is a slap in the face to what actually hap-

pened. The real story has been told from different people so I don’t know the full details, but what basically happened is that Lee was training students in martial arts in San Francisco.

Because he was training students of various backgrounds, some people didn’t like that and Lee had to fight Wong Jack Man, who volunteered to test Lee, and if Lee won, he could continue teaching whoever he wanted. They fought and the fight was broken up halfway through because of how well Lee fought and he was allowed to continue teaching with no interference.

That is a way more interesting story than whatever the hell this movie was trying to do.

Bruce Lee standing up to the discrimination of his students is way cooler than making him a third wheel to some guy’s awful love story.

How does one even approve of a movie about Bruce Lee that doesn’t even focus on him or anything that he actually did?

Shannon Lee, the daughter of Bruce Lee, saw the movie and described it as being a travesty to her father’s legacy. That’s a bold statement considering all of the stuff that’s been made based on him.

However, calling this movie a travesty to Lee’s legacy is an understatement. They make him look like a complete ass for no reason.

To be fair to Philip Ng, the actor who plays Lee, he’s pretty talented. It’s just such a shame that he was given such a terrible script. I hope he gets another chance to shine in a future movie.

The worst part about this movie isn’t even the awful plot or the bad portrayal of Bruce Lee. The worst part of it is how lazy and bland the fighting is.

When you make a martial arts movie, the main focus needs to be making the fights look so good that you want to learn how to fight like that.

That’s what made Bruce Lee such an impressive person. If a movie about Bruce Lee doesn’t make you feel like that, you have officially made an abomination of a film.

Now, I haven’t seen “The Emoji Movie,” but I have a hard time believing any other movie released this year could be worse than “Birth of the Dragon.”

That’s right, I honestly would rather watch “The Emoji Movie” than have to suffer through “Birth of the Dragon” again.

The only good thing that could come from this movie is if Bruce Lee’s corpse rises from the grave, hunts down the people who made this movie and beats the hell out of them like how Liu Kang did to Quan Chi in “Mortal Kombat: Deception.”

Speaking of Liu Kang, he’s a better tribute to Bruce Lee’s legacy and in the last “Mortal Kombat,” he and Kitana became the king and queen of hell.

“Birth of the Dragon” is the complete opposite of what a movie about a true event in Bruce Lee’s life should be. This movie is trash, the people who made it are trash and I’m trash for wasting my time and money on it. Don’t make the same mistake I did.

Arkansas Cinema Society screens “A Ghost Story” Story and Photo by Pete Tubbs, Editor in Chief

The Arkansas Cinema Society, started by acclaimed Arkansas filmmaker Jeff Nichols, closed it’s inaugural premiere weekend last Saturday night. The closing film was the acclaimed Sundance entry “A Ghost Story.”

The film was directed by David Lowery.

Lowery has also helmed films such as “St. Nick,” “Ain’t Them Bodies Saints,” and “Pete’s Dragon.”

The screening of his latest film, “A Ghost Story,” was followed by a question and answer session between Nichols, Lowery and the audience.

“A Ghost Story” follows a young couple (played by Casey Affleck and Rooney Mara).

After ‘C’ (Casey Affleck) is killed, he returns to his old house to haunt ‘M’ (Rooney Mara) and the people who move in long after she moves out.

It is a film that explores the relativity of time and the possibility of an afterlife.

Affleck’s ghost does not look like what one would perhaps think. It is, in fact, Casey Affleck wearing a large sheet over his head with only two eye holes to add personality.

One of the major challenges that Lowery and his team had while making the film was trying to elicit emotion from Casey Affleck while he was shrouded in a sheet the entire time.

This was something that Lowery called “sheet acting.” One would think that a major star such as Affleck would have apprehensions over not being seen for an entire film, but according to the director that was not the case.

“I texted Casey and told him I was doing a movie over the summer about a ghost and I had a part for him,” Lowery said in the Q&A with Nichols, “he said ‘sure.’”

When asked if Affleck ever voiced his concerns about doing an entire film with a blank sheet as a main character, Lowery said, “Not to me, he did the opposite.”

The film was financed by Lowery and some of his friends without any studio help. “We didn’t want to have to go explain this to anybody,” Low-

ery said.

“A Ghost Story” is nearly without dialogue.

Most of the film is comprised of the ghost viewing the passage of time through other people’s lives.

When asked if it was a challenge to create a nearly silent film, Lowery said, “When you remove words, you have to make sure the movie still works. Language is a distractor, you have to make sure that every element of the film is carrying its weight.”

Lowery was more than enthusiastic for the challenge. Filmmaking is something that he’s wanted to do since he was seven years old. “I saw ‘Star Wars’ and I was like ‘How did they do that?’,” Lowery said to Nichols.

He got into the business by editing commercials and industrial films in and around Dallas.

According to Jeff Nichols, it’s what he originally became known for. “Editing was the by-product of wanting to make movies,” Lowery explained.

When it comes to future films, Lowery has more than one in the oven. He is currently making a film based on a newspaper article about an elderly man that escapes from prison and plans a new heist.

Next year, audiences can see Lowery’s return to Disney Studios. He is writing and directing Disney’s new “Peter Pan” adaptation.

Better “Greater Tuna” Play Review by Kansas Tye, Business Manager

Life in the South, as anyone who lives here can tell you, is a unique experience. “Greater Tuna” is a satirical commentary on just that. Written by Jaston Williams, Joe Sears, and Ed Howard, the theatre department adapted the show and ran it from Saturday, Aug. 26 through Monday, Aug. 28. Though Greater Tuna is the first in a series of four plays about the town, the department has chosen to only put on one.

Greater Tuna is a two-man show about fictional small town Tuna, Texas.

Although there are scenes in several locations around the town, everything is held together by the thread of the radio station OKDK. Whether it’s through the station being the physical setting, a character being introduced through an ad, or the station playing in the background, OKDK is the unifying force of the play.

In the original play, the station was called OKKK. This was changed for the Henderson production to avoid controversy in light of the events in Charlottesville, Virginia. There was also a character in the original script who was the leader of the local chapter of the KKK. The play starred senior theatre majors Dakota Mansfield and LaDarius Jamerson as a wide cast of characters making up citizens of the town. This required many quick costume changes on both of their parts. For example, in one scene, Mansfield plays a mother while Jamerson plays all three of the children and then a reporter. There is never a dialogue with more than two participants, but the costume changes also don’t feel like dead time.

“The amazing thing about ‘Greater Tuna’ is, even though these characters seem outlandish

and crazy, there is still something behind them that give them characteristics that are relatable and sometimes even heartwarming,” Mansfield said. “There is also no way these 20+ quick changes would work without the help of our amazing dressers, Savannah Reynolds and Tyler Felton. They are a tremendous help!”

If you’ve ever lived in a rural southern town, you may recognize some of your family and neighbors amongst these colorful characters.

While many of the themes are exaggerated for comedic purpose, they are still very familiar. The racism, conservatism, and extremely religious views almost wouldn’t even seem out of place in a real life southern town. For instance, one of the characters played by Mansfield, Bertha Bumiller, claims to be a member of the Women’s Auxiliary of the Wildhogs, an offshoot of the Lions club that is “less liberal.”

The set is minimalist and there are virtually no props, forcing the actors to be extremely versatile. Using only two tables, four chairs, and the imagination of the viewers, Mansfield and Jamerson were able to bring life to the town of Tuna. They shuffled unseen papers, dialed on imaginary rotary phones, and wrangled invisible dogs, conveying their actions though the context of the play.

The duo of Dakota Mansfield and LaDarius Jamerson put on a show that had the audience enthralled. People seemed to love seeing the caricature of southern living. Based on the laughter ringing through the theater, the viewers enjoyed the performance.

Since opening night was on the first Saturday of the semester, the students involved in this production had to work extremely hard. They started working on it before classes had even begun. All of the time, effort, and dedication shown through in way that the play turned out. The set, costumes, lighting, and everything else came together to support the suspension of disbelief that allowed us to be immersed in life in Tuna, Texas.

There are several organizations for students to join on campus, including phiolosophy club, chemistry club, an upcoming film club, etc. One organization that requires a bit more activity than most, however is intramural sports.

This fall, there are three sports to choose from, and men and women can participate in all of them. The sports for fall 2017 include three on three basketball, flag football and volleyball.

Student’s who’d like a little grit and sweat in their day should look into it.

The basketball three on three sign ups are up and coming. The season begins on Oct. 16 and ends on Nov. 1.

There are three types of teams in all including men’s three on three, men’s three on three competitive and women’s three on three. Registration opens on Sept. 25 at midnight and closes on Oct. 12 at midnight.

Flag football also has three teams, and sign ups are open. There are co-ed flag football, men’s flag football and women’s flag football teams available to join.

Registration for flag football opened on Aug. 13 and will close on Sept. 4. The season goes from Sept. 6 to Oct. 11.

The third sport is volleyball. The three types of volleyball teams to join are four on four men’s, four on four women’s and six on six coed.

Registration for four on four men’s opens on Sept. 9. and closes on Nov. 2 at midnight. Registraions for the other two open on Oct. 9 and also close on Nov. 2. The season lasts from Nov. 6 to Nov. 30.

There are no tryouts, just fun. For people who aren’t into joining a sports team and spending every day of their life practicing but still want to have fun, intramurals are the perfect solution.
