CFD Research celebrates opening of new location in Cummings Research Park CFD Research held a ribbon cutting on June 4 to officially open its new three-story, 45,000-square-foot office building in Huntsville’s Cummings Research Park. The company has grown significantly in recent years, and Sameer Singhal, President & CEO, discussed the company’s path since his parents founded it in 1987 in the basement of their family home. During the event, Singhal discussed a product the company has developed, SonoProtech. These noise-reduction ear plugs were designed for police and military use, and block harmful high-decibel noise while allowing conversation and ambient sounds. They can also be used for shooting and hunting, and are manufactured in Florence, Alabama. CFD Research’s Keith Sedberry led development of the product, and is the son of retired Huntsville Police Lieutenant David Sedberry. At the ceremony, the company donated 50 of the devices to the Huntsville Police Department. ■

Local students get hands-on summer training in automotive industry
Pro-Air, Pro-Earth Scholarship Winner Named
In early June, Woody Anderson Ford and Calhoun Community College partnered on a new Advanced Technology Academy for local students. About 22 students in 7th, 8th and 9th grades participated in the week-long program, which is designed to make them aware of the opportunities in the automotive industry at an earlier age. They got hands-on experience with combustion engines, diagnostics, electric and hybrid vehicles, and autonomous vehicles.
For the past 11 years, Pro-Air Services, Inc. has awarded a scholarship to an area high school student who demonstrates awareness about the environment. This year’s winner is Kimberly Diane Griffin, who is the first winner from Priceville High School. She wins a $2,000 scholarship. To be considered, students write essays about what being Pro-Earth means to them, and the company determined Griffin’s comments stood out among the other entries. Congratulations Ms. Griffin! ■

ADTRAN recognized for Excellence in Marketing, Gigabit Service Delivery Innovation ADTRAN, the leading provider of next-generation open networking and subscriber experience solutions, recently announced it has been recognized for a number of achievements. In May, the Muse Creative Awards and American Advertising Federation (AAF) honored ADTRAN’s creative team with an impressive 15 awards for marketing excellence. “The competition for these awards is against the creative teams from the top consumer and commercial brands in the world and earning this recognition is a testament of the drive, professionalism and tremendous talent on our team,” said Gary Bolton, ADTRAN Vice President of Global Marketing. “Year after year, our forward-thinking creative team continues to hone their craft, combining modern, complicated technical ideas with classical art concepts to capture and communicate how ADTRAN is bringing the world together.”
The Muse Creative and Muse Design Awards are international competitions for creative and design professionals from all disciplines, who help push the evolution of their industry in a positive direction. “We recognize the breakthrough achievements of these true innovators, who live by the words, ‘make the world a better place for all’,” said Kenjo Ong, CEO, Muse Awards. “They have earned this recognition.” ADTRAN announced in June that its second generation portfolio of Gfast fiber extension products has been recognized for excellence in the market with six leading industry awards. The most recent include the Global Telecoms Award, the 2019 Lightwave Innovation Reviews, and the 2019 Internet Telephony Product of the Year Award. “We are thrilled that our gigabit-capable fiber extension portfolio is being recognized for its industry leadership and innovation,” ADTRAN Head of Solutions Management EMEA & APAC Dr. Werner Heinrich said. “Gfast fiber extension has become the ‘go to’ gigabit technology due to the minimal tenant disruption and low deployment costs, which is perfect for addressing the lucrative and underserved Multi-Dwelling Unit (MDU) market. Our comprehensive Gfast fiber extension portfolio helps service providers simplify multi-faceted MDU deployments – creating new gigabit communities by choosing from a broad toolkit of powering, port and placement options.” Deployments of the ADTRAN Gfast fiber extension solutions are currently underway in Tier 1 carrier networks in Australia, North America and Europe as network operators globally seek out methods to accelerate the delivery of symmetrical gigabit service capabilities, maximizing the revenue potential of their fiber investments and ensuring all premises passed can economically and efficiently transition to becoming connected premises. Thanks to the benefits of ADTRAN’s Gfast fiber extension portfolio, more consumers each day are partaking in the Gigabit Society, more operators are securing expedited revenues, and more investors are benefiting from the reduction in the risk profile of their fiber network investments. ■ A HUNTSVILLE/MADISON COUNTY CHAMBER PUBLICATION

Citizens for Space Exploration hosts annual visit to Washington, D.C. In May, a delegation from Huntsville visited Washington, D.C. as part of the annual Citizens for Space Exploration fly-in. The purpose of the trip is to press for continued support for NASA and its human space exploration program. “The Huntsville/Madison County Chamber has been a member of a national coalition of communities that supports space exploration known as the Citizens for Space Exploration,” said Mike Ward, the Chamber’s Senior Vice President of Government and Public Affairs. “For more than 16 years, The National Space Club and the Chamber of Commerce Foundation have jointly sponsored NASA interns and/or UAH graduate students to attend the Citizens for Space Exploration DC fly-in.” Mike Ward and Saroj Kumar, Graduate Teaching Assistant at the Propulsion Research Center at UAH, had the pleasure of attending this year’s trip, which included visits with members of Congress and their staffs. There is also a Congressional reception. Kumar has been on the trip before, and said he was excited to have this chance again. “I think it is a wonderful organization which works towards promoting the benefits of space exploration programs, particularly the Human Space Program,” he said. “Being passionate about space exploration from my childhood, I admire the support of the Huntsville/Madison County Chamber towards this organization.” Kumar added that this was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and he was excited to meet several members of the U.S. House, Senate, and their staffs. “I had the opportunity to update them on my

In honor of the upcoming 50th Anniversary of Apollo 11, Analytical Mechanics Associates, Inc. (AMA) is rolling out a nationwide campaign celebrating the role of small businesses that support NASA and the nation’s space and aviation goals. The milestone anniversary is an opportunity to reflect on the extensive contributions that were necessary to achieve past mission success as well as the need for small business partners to enable the success of current and future missions. From now until August 1, 2019, AMA will share personal videos, Gilman images, and stories of AMA employees and industry experts who worked to make Apollo-era missions, including Apollo 11, a success. These stories and other unique “behind-the-scenes” recollections from the Apollo era will be shared through AMA’s social media platforms. Recent videos on AMA’s Facebook page feature Dr. David Gilman and Al Ragsdale, who talk about their work. AMA invites all of NASA’s small business partners to participate in this celebratory campaign. To officially join in the effort, small Ragsdale businesses are encouraged to share their own Apollo-era stories on social media using the hashtag #NextGiantLeapPartners. “As a supporter of NASA for more than 50 years, we recognize the legacy of Apollo continued on page 20

Mazda Toyota Manufacturing’s Nod to Huntsville’s Space Heritage As a tribute to Huntsville’s leadership role with the U.S. space program, Mazda Toyota Manufacturing, U.S.A., Inc. (MTMUS) will name its two assembly lines Apollo and Discovery, respectively. “Thanks to our team members’ creativity and innovative thinking, Mazda Toyota Manufacturing is proud to name our two future assembly lines Apollo and Discovery in a nod to our city’s heritage as the birthplace of our nation’s space program,” said Mark Brazeal, vice president for administration at MTM. “The scores of brilliant men and women who worked tirelessly to further mankind’s progress and exploration into the unknown gives our team motivation to add to the Rocket City’s history as a producer of world-class vehicles.” Apollo was the National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s (NASA) program that resulted in 12 American astronauts walking on the moon. The Space Shuttle Discovery completed 39 successful missions, surpassing the number of flights made by any other orbiters in NASA’s fleet. Discovery also launched the Hubble Space Telescope into orbit and was the first American spacecraft piloted by a woman, Eileen Collins.

SMALL BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT
Chanda Davis Real Estate
Have you ever encountered a real estate boutique? Located on the strip of Providence you will find an innovative, upbeat agency that strives to help you find the right path. Chanda Davis’ Superior School of Real Estate takes pride in teamwork, innovation, and collaboration. Davis is a broker and owner/instructor of the school, and said she could not run the business without Dena Schrimsher, realtor and manager of Valley Metro Property Management, and her team of agents. “I never thought I would be a business owner,” said Davis. “You can’t be afraid to learn or ask for help.” Davis began her journey at 25 years old. She began practicing real estate shortly after she met Keith Hall, a realtor who sold Davis her first home. Davis mentioned to him that she enjoyed real estate, and he helped pay for her schooling to obtain her pre-license. “He took me under his wing and I never really had in-classroom training after my pre-license,” Davis said. “I learned the ropes on the street and I think that is what equipped me to be in real estate as a broker on my own.” Chamari Abernathy, executive director and realtor, works for Davis and said she admires her. Abernathy said she has learned things she would not have learned from another company. “She does real estate with her eyes closed,” said Abernathy. After Davis’ initial career in real estate, she taught for 17 years in Huntsville City Schools. She later went into the trucking business, but lost everything. “I drove light freight on a 40-foot bed and dolly where anything that could go wrong went wrong and I lost every single thing that I ever worked for: my retirement, my savings, and everything,” Davis said. “I was dead broke and almost homeless about three years ago.” Davis said she dated a man who helped her track her purpose. He suggested she pick one of her four degrees and give it a chance for a year, and if Davis was not 24

successful in that time period, she would go back to teaching. From there, Davis began to make a plan on paper. “That week I put on Facebook, ‘Hey I am going back into real estate, support me,’ that day I had five offers and it went from there,” said Davis. Davis returned to teaching, but also sold real estate part-time. After a year, she decided it was time to be a realtor full-time. This led to the start of her real estate school and agency in Providence. Davis said she believes things have a funny way of working themselves out. Her second business, Superior School of Real Estate, gave her the opportunity to keep her passion for teaching. The real estate school offers live instruction, project-based learning, scenario-based facilitation, and 101 tutorings for pre- or post-license brokerage. Davis said the school works to change lives one student at a time. Ashley Gray is the administrator for the school, and a realtor, and aspires to expand the school nationally. The Chanda Davis Real Estate Agency started with two agents and now they have 40. She said her formula for growth includes an understanding that everyone is made one-of-a-kind. “Real estate is not tailor-made,” Davis said. “I think that is why 25 percent of people trying to work in real estate aren’t in real estate the first year. They see this game plan that is identical for everyone, like a recipe, and it won’t work for everyone. I don’t use recipes, I taste until I’m like booyah, it’s perfect!” ■ Erin Braxton, Small Business & Events Intern A HUNTSVILLE/MADISON COUNTY CHAMBER PUBLICATION
