NOTE FROM THE PUBLISHER
“There is a vitality, a life force, an energy, a quickening that is translated through you into action, and because there is only one of you in all of time, this expression is unique. And if you block it, it will never exist through any other medium and it will be lost. The world will not have it. It is not your business to determine how good it is nor how valuable nor how it compares with other expressions. It is your business to keep it yours clearly and directly, to keep the channel open. You do not even have to believe in yourself or your work. You have to keep yourself open and aware to the urges that motivate you. Keep the channel open. ... No artist is pleased. [There is] no satisfaction whatever at any time. There is only a queer divine dissatisfaction, a blessed unrest that keeps us marching and makes us more alive than the others (Martha Graham) With great pride and even greater sense of duty and responsibility we would like to present the first volume of the Hidden Treasure Art Magazine Yearbook 2014. Our mission is to connect and build a bridge between artists and art lovers by providing and presenting a high quality source of visual art and design through our book, website, magazine and other publications. We are dedicated to bringing happiness and recognition to the artists and joy, beauty and satisfaction to the art lovers let them be collectors, buyers, galleries, curators or others taking pleasure in art and design. This idea was embraced by 221 artists from 32 countries all over the world and this is why we believe that Hidden Treasure Art Magazine Yearbook has so much to offer both to the Artist and to the Readers.

I have been a fine artist for the last eight years and have exhibited in both solo and group shows across Europe. I have sold several pieces which include paintings, drawings and sculptures, some of these have been commissions from clients within the UK and Europe. Recently I have developed my technique using the airbrush. I am a multi skilled artist who is not tied to one media. I choose materials based on their relationship with my concept and what can be interpreted from such means.

Working exclusively in charcoal, Dan uses a realistic style that mimics photography to the point that his work is often mistaken for photographs. He loves shadows, contrast, anonymity and using negative space in his compositions. His gifted eye catches timeless “fragments” of life in his work- whether it’s the intricate lines of the human hand, or the delicate folds of a garment, they are drawn in detailed simplicity. With virtually no formal art training, Dan has been drawing since childhood. Throughout the years, his internationally award winning work has been displayed in galleries throughout the country, including online galleries as far away as London. My aim is to give something positive back to our world. A world, despite suffering our greed, that continues to offer us a wonderful home. There is so much beauty around us which we ignore, and this beauty I try to capture in my paintings. In return, my paintings have given me an extraordinary life. 14

I paint over it, drip paint on it and sometime cover it up completely because I did not like the painting and started over...there are many paintings out there with layers of gold under them...but you can not melt the gold down as it is so fine and wafer thin....but I could not use anything else but real gold.. “ – Barbara

„Are they me?” she asks as she collides with strangers.“ Are the torn pieces of me hidden in slivers of everyone else? Will I define my soul if I trap onto paper and imprison within strokes of pastel, stolen glimpses of you?” she asks again. Do we prefer steadfast lacquered finishes to the raw and fleeting images which expose with singular eloquence our brevity? She strains to coalesce pieces of others’ humanity shoved through paper and chalk, desperate to acknowledge them and me. Others’ eyes become my home and stare back at me, refracting my missing pieces like a mirrored prism. My frozen view of you who are in my path reflects how much your scars remind me of mine. Encircled by your articulate features, my artist’s soul is re-born in the crossfire.“ 22

Afterwards she started to make her own exhibitions and then she got various invitations from galleries in NY and several European cities like London, Paris, Brussels, Milan, Rome and Buenos Aires to expose her works. “I prefer to do art than to write about it. For me art is a natural expression of myself, my energies and my wholeness. I am not sure how much my earthy experiences flow into my art as when I paint (especially abstract works) I am more connected to my true essence and that is always beautiful and perfect and somehow out of space and time.

www.ronald-walker.artistwebsites.com Ronald C. Walker’s work is influenced by both the Dadaist and Symbolist art movements. It serves as a type of metaphorical roadmap of his life which explores the inner aspects of his habitation in and movement through the suburban experience.
The Suburban Pool Gouache 11x14 inches 2013 Suburban Primitive art is concerned with the effect of life in the suburbs along with the timeless and universal nature of basic humanity. It is my belief that man is still largely a tribal creature and that not enough time has gone by to change us in any real biological fashion. We are, to phrase it another way just one small step from the cave. How does this primitive creature function in the gentile world of the suburbs? The answer is, not that well. Hidden under the vail of civilization lies a primitive creature who is a slave of biology and unable to escape their past. To witness this one doesn’t need to examine larger group activities such as war or the effects of the mass media. Just go out on a Friday night to the suburban nightclub and watch the behavior of its clients. Ugly Duck, Gouache, 11x14 inches, 2013

Wim Zorn started out as figurative painter, but soon a need to simplify forms arose. In 2002 Hans Paalman (former director of the Schiedam Municipal Museum in the Netherlands) started him off on a different track: Abstraction. The painter relinquished his reliance on reality and learned to trust his intuĂŻtion and feelings. At once his studio became both a delivery room and a laboratory. Here he creates an autonomous world of material, form, and colour, in which spatial experiences are combined with physical presence. Everything revolves on an ultimate combination of simplicity, balance, visual tension, and the creation of space and quietude.

Kati Lehti is a Finnish visual artist, born in 1977. She has been influenced by the surrealists, magical realists, and outsider artists, as for example. Also, literature has a great impact on her visual work. In her early childhood her mother put a pencil in her hand as soon as she learned to sit up properly. She began painting with gouache at kindergarten age. At the age of 4, she dreamed of becoming an artist, a writer, and a teacher, especially admiring sculptors greatly. In her thirties, she started to feel an overriding need for painting and working with visual arts. Up to that point, she has mainly been painting in secrecy, but as of then she began to show her work to the public. From 2011 on, she’s had several art exhibitions annually. She’d like to see that her work be strong yet sensitive, and somehow comforting. She’d like to create her own mythic atmosphere in her works. Kati Lehti is self-educated and interested in any kind of contemporary art.

Drop It Like Its Hot, mixed media, 50x100 cm, 2012 Anne Mwiti’s mixed media expressions are inspired by her daily experiences and interactions with the “modern woman”. Her collages that emerge from fashion magazine cut outs, controlled paint drips and use of non conventional media such as iron rust, are direct social commentaries of the Contemporary African society she lives in. She processes colour as a means to an end and not an end in itself, bringing the intensity of raw emotions to the canvas in a very spontaneous way. Her paintings draw the viewer in and take them on a self discovery journey. Each artwork is an experience.

He has only been showing his work for the last few years hoping, that he would make a living of it, not to be recognised as an artist but rather create more painting, as that is the only thing he prefers to do for the rest of his life. He participated in several collective exhibitions and art competitions. He does not make any particular statement with his creations, it is just a way for him to escape from the world he is living in. For endless reason he finds this world incomprehensible and full of injustice. We are – he says – as human race toxic to the earth and ourselves.

The contempoary artwork of the Norwegian oil painter, Anett Kilèn Kennedy, fuses the classical with modern, figurative with abstract. -Philippe Guston once pointed out that there is a mysterious element to the picture plane –“an imaginary plane that defies any traditional explanation”. I believe that the moment we become lost in a painting, we are closest to the space between heaven and earth that the Japanese describes as “Nakazura”, the silent place of all and nothing. An inexpressible place, between dream and reality, for escape and solace which hopefully, ultimately heals and leaves the viewer with a fresh way of seeing Home Base.

„The struggle of late is trying to maintain sanity, in a world filled with normality. Where do you get these ideas from? What was the inspiration? There must be a reason, what were you thinking? The reasons must be obvious, or they will not be accepted. There are times when I cannot explain. There are times when there is no reason. When a painting is started and when the painting is completed the original concept will have completely changed. The painting has its own idea, I am no longer in control. So I have learned not to question it. There is no sense in trying to be normal. I was once told to trust my audience. There is no need to explain. They will find the meaning, and make it there own.”

To express my soul on a canvas. How a painting will turn out is always a surprise, since I change plans often during the creation process. I let my subconscious guide me, giving it total freedom. All my paintings are mixed media, the more the better. A variety of styles combined is what strongly appeals to me, varying from airbrush, brush, drybrush and even dotism style. The possibilities and combinations are endless. Art is my great journey in life, it allows me to express myself in ways words could never achieve. Art helps me greatly in discovering who I truly am, and through the years it has revealed many aspects of myself I never knew existed. Kasha Ritter first became aware of the power of drawing when ‘Harold and the Purple Crayon’ fell off the shelf at the library. It was 1969 and she was five years old. The idea that one line could change your world was the beginning of her creative adventure. Her grandmother saw Kasha’s need to instigate creatively and set her farther on her path with a tin of busted crayons and a stack of paper. Her current medium, acrylic ink on canvas, NO BRUSHES ALLOWED, is due in part to the fact she forgets to clean off paintbrushes as they harden overnight. And partly because she loves the frenzy of trying to catch the ink as it moves across the canvas wondering where it will go next. Kasha prefers as little control as possible as she interacts with her medium.

Formerly a fishing island, the city has came a long way, and throughout history has earned its place in becoming Asia’s world city. Born in Northern Italy, Francesco left the country after completing his studies in Milan, before going abroad. He then furthered his studies in Paris, and lived in London for the next decade after. Many of Francesco’s paintings are related to travels – places he visited and enjoyed along his journey. Inspired by the colours of Asia, architecture and abstract paintings. His paintings are a combination of memory and fantasy, where the artist takes in two contrasting elements – the city and countryside – to recreate his own landscape. Using bold, striking colours, the painter takes images from his memory and enlivens the cityscape with every stroke on the canvas. The artist works in acrylic on canvas, and mixed media such as newspaper cut-outs and uses collage to give his works texture and depth. Now an established artist in Hong Kong, Francesco Lietti has exhibited across galleries in the city and has been featured in numerous publications. 52

Their authentic self might be disguised by the outline of uniforms of soldier. The soldiers’ true identity and real story was often forgotten and untold. I want to spotlight their weakness, uncertainty and distress residing underneath their outspoken bravery, resolution and mystification. I emphasize the fact that we owe our peaceful world to those who willingly scarified and died during the war. I combine organic shape and geometric form, objective coloring of nature and subjective impregnation of it in my Camouflage series.

Preston Craig, who is a published artist, writer and educator originally from Louisiana, earned an M.F.A. (with honors) in Illustration from the Academy of Art University in San Francisco and a B.A. in Applied Arts from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. Deciding to devote his creative energy to the visual arts, he has found success as a freelance illustrator, fine artist, digital artist, muralist/scenic artist, art instructor and voice over actor in the Los Angeles area. „Painting allows me freedom to address some of the social ills that plague our modern society and to paint what I feel, not necessarily what I see. Having worked with drug addicts, the homeless, victims of sexual abuse, young people who have been incarcerated, and having friends in the porn industry, I have definitely seen some of the seedier side of life. I’ve seen how people can make a bad decision and get trapped in that decision. They are unable to figure out how to get out of the situation in which they find themselves. With that in mind, I aspire to achieve social change with my art.” GangstaTeddy acrylic on illustration board 28x22 inches 2010 72

www.markus-klein-artwork.de I am a portrait artist from Germany. My aim is to draw portraits that are more realistic and alive than a photograph. All my works are created on A4 paper with coloured pencils, this medium allows for a huge amount of detail on this relatively small scale. That’s why I also consider my works miniature art, many details reveal themselves only on close observation. I am a family man, with my wife being my muse, strongest critic, and greatest supporter. My advice to beginner artists: art is free and should not be limited to what critics say – just make sure your heart is in it.

Dominique Brunzlik is combining painting, photography and digital art, which enables her to overcome limits and to reflect the permanent change associated with our modern lifestyle. Her art particularly mirrors the increasing mixing of virtual and real world. So she uses “mixed worlds” for a constructive, liberating and refreshing effect – to break shackles that strangle our imagination: “Fantasy can be stimulated by smallest and inconspicuous things, if we allow to be child again. Than a stone, a shadow, a structure on the floor or an icicle will be the ticket for an exciting journey in our personal fantasy-universe.”

For Sue the absolute number one consideration in planning a painting is colour. She sees choosing the perfect palette as the secret to communicating the spirit or energy she wants to express in her work. Sue worked first as a journalist and then a charity development officer. Now retired and based in SW London, she is pursuing a career in painting. She likes to concentrate on abstracts and expressionist still life using exploration in texture and vigorous brush strokes. Her chief delight is the unpredictable nature of the journey from blank canvas to finished painting and often finds herself surprised and intrigued by the final result.

My art can be described as abstract and contemporary. My tools include needles, putty knives, brushes, pencils and, of course, my hands which enable me to feel my art. Most of the time, I use whatever I can find, amongst other things: acrylic and oil, varnish, coal and chalk. I use a very special style which features synthetic drawing. I take the shape of an accidentally chosen object and draw part of it onto my canvas. By putting these randomly selected outlines together, I have created an artificial object. My work is pervaded with lines, which arise from synthetic drawing. Combining outlines of existing forms and objects creates a new reality. To finalize my work I connect the graphics with the painting by additional colorizing. People often view my work and find the unexpected. Looking at my paintings more closely or over a longer period of time, you’ll always discover shapes and figures which previously remained covert.

Muses of Masquerade, Mardi Gras revelers, acrylic on illustration board, 30x40 inches, 2012 My art is a reflection of my observations of life in southern Louisiana. My subjects include people in costume: police officers in uniform or S.W.A.T gear, masqueraders of Mardi Gras, Native Americans in powwow regalia, Celtic and Laotian cultural dancers. I consider myself a contemporary realist and like working with freehand airbrush for the photographic “soft edge” quality of the media. I also like drawing with graphite, colored pencil and, sometimes, pen & ink for variety. I received my art education from the University of Southwestern Louisiana with a Bachelors of Fine Arts in 1975 and from Louisiana State University with a Masters of Fine Arts in 1977. Following a family “law enforcement” tradition, I retired from public service in 2003 with over twentyfive years with the Baton Rouge and New Iberia, Louisiana Police Departments.

„I believe one’s art should reflect those really meaningful things in one’s life, things an artist loves and knows, that have made her the artist she is today.” Luz-Maria Lopez’s first exposure to art was the images of icons on their family altar that she saw every day as a child. Those early experiences, along with her grandmother’s stories, have been very powerful influences in what she paints. Her Latin heritage and the Maya influence in her native country, Honduras, are reflected in her work. Maria’s works are iconic and figurative – a blend of cultural symbols, metaphors, allegories and legends; stories of creations which are filled with symbolism. Fairy tales, indigenous folklore and mythological stories have also contributed. „Gradually, I begin to see something in my mind, which becomes the starting point of the work, and I go from there... to wherever the painting takes me.”

Manuel Olivares is attracted by everything that has a past and has a huge respect and passion for women and life. No wonder, he is form Naples, Italy. His inner passion lived experienced the increased intensity the thirst for life. (Georgia Szollosi, editor) The paintings of Napoli artist Manuel Olivares possess a futuristic quality impacted by rigorous interiors where furniture flows without encumbrances and human bodies seem sculpted from light. The contrast between the colors – the red, the blue, the dense yellow – penetrates the volumes of the buildings and splashes through the empty spaces, filling them up. The artist paints from offbeat points of view, creating exotic perspectives from which the viewer can observe from unconventional vantage points. The buildings themselves seem to ground us with their dense and substantial construction, unobstructed by decoration and reduced to their purest form.

His work addresses the love and steadfastness of the family while also providing visual honesty concerning fears, uncertainties and resentments. Housing structures, as bodily forms, create a dialog which places all parts as important for the structural integrity of the form. Missing parts that are physically distant, yet psychologically present, in his works, cause trauma which leads to an unstable foundation, and thus an infected body and home. Graphic segments are the primitive bricks of a universe that forms and transforms. These are the palette of the artist who uses them to play as a musician with the notes. He works as the composer who already hears the sounds when he writes a partition. The drawings describe a world where exist visible, invisible, the magic and fantasy. The intention of the creator moves to second place. Each person interprets what he sees according to what he is.

My drawings are intended to be part of the reflection that I do regarding spirituality, which I live like ‘the path of unity’. They seek to record the beauty of all links that appear in diversity, the depth of common people, Nature’s simple life and the extent of cultures, especially the one regarding Latin America. I have discovered that drawing is a space to meditate, similar to the creation of mandalas, allowing me to stop mind’s whirlwind and achieve tranquility. I have also been able to explore new areas such as music, painting, photography, etching, carving and writing, all means that give me great joy.

A simple imperfection can be more attractive than boring perfection. My current body of work focuses on an Intriguing combination of texture, color, and composition. Each piece is manipulated with a unique surface finish of textures. In my art I combine charcoal, pastels, watercolor, ink, acrylic paint, pen and digital photography to create textural abstract drawings. Regardless of the media, I strive to capture nature’s innate beauty through each of my piece. I try to focus on organic contours and unique textures. I paint out of passion‌ To me, art is self expression, communication, a tribute and an emotional portray. The first step in making decision in the course of my work is brainstorming for inspiring thoughts & views. Next, I visualize the concept of the painting in my head, how it will look like and the feelings it will provoke. Finally, I translate that on canvas leaving room for improvisation and spontaneous brush strokes. When it comes to techniques, I set myself free from any restrictions, my style is neither classic nor abstract, I see my self as an impressionist. Themes are often chosen based on what moves me the most, a message I would like to convey or even something I come across that strikes me as interesting and worth highlighting. My current work revolves around a group of themes one of them is the theme of Attraction, a collection that invites people to welcome all what’s positive into their lives.

Golden Sunshine, oil painting, 162x130 cm, 2011 I started to learn painting twenty years ago when I was a high school student. I have been living in Keelung city, Taiwan. I always enjoyed the natural beauty of Keelung which is absolutely a great resource of my painting creations. I found that I am interested in oil painting when I studied in Visual Art in Shih Chien University because this technique creates many layers and represents the natural beauty very well. After graduating from Shih Chien University, I worked for several companies as a web designer and printing material designer. But I never give up on oil painting because I have a lot of passion for oil painting. I also had my very first personal painting exhibition in 2007. After working for companies for several years, I decided to quit the job and started my own painting studio in 2007, since I can focus on painting full time and also share my knowledge and passion with my students. He combines gestural abstraction based upon narrative events and unforgettable experiences of the past few years into compositions that project the emotional relationship between heart and color.

Aktrice’s creations invite us to contemplate and enjoy. Eroticism and mysticism are joined to form an insoluble unity. Aktrice’s dramatic use of light and shadow and the intensity of her colour, especially the colour red underscore her passion for life and the suffering that reveals life’s meaning to us. The artist shows us a world that seems to be unreal and yet at the same time, speaks of very real people and emotions. She uses ordinary objects like roses and chains as well as plants and buildings to symbolize the inner workings of our minds and souls. Aktrice’s love of detail is brilliantly executed through the use of the Old Masters mixed media techniques to attract the attention oft he viewer and to lead him into the magical world of her paintings. This painting technique goes back tot he late gothic era and makes it possible to create masterpieces of amazing colour intensity and luminosity. Often oil paints produced by the artist themselves are used as well as colours that even today are made with granite rolls and cold pressed windmill-linseed oil. This very expensive and time consuming method produces immaculate, unaltered, lightfast colours. When will you open the lock oil on linen 50x50 cm MMXIII

Gabi Domenig is an Austrian painter. She concerns herself primarily with the representation of women. Her characters send out varied emotions such as pride, love, sadness, loneliness, joy and longing. They are sensuous, strong, vulnerable, thoughtful, dreamy, seductive and promising. The figures are mostly located in a particular environment cutout. The strong colours, the expression of the eyes and the emotion should draw the viewer into its spell and animate him to enter in a deeper communication with the figures in the picture. Flowers, plants, animals, patterns and landscape sections are decorative parts, but are usually situated in the background.

Giancarlo Flati was born in Aquila. Winner of the Prize Michetti-Museum on 2005. According to Claudio Strinati* “Flati is an artist endowed with great awareness. The balance he displays between the spontaneous flow of inspiration and the capacity to reflect on the work produced is a quality seldom found. While he has already been active for a good many years, there can be no doubt about the fact that his work fits in perfectly with the renewal of this new millennium. The master has in fact succeeded over the years in developing a highly personal style, deriving in part also from his specific experiences both in art and in science, to the point of bringing wholly spontaneous impulse into line with the results of intense reflection involving a convergence of psychological, metaphysical, technical and spiritual themes.” It’s the subtle ad deep relationship between primordial Information and creative consciousness that represents the fertile ground and the substance of his artistic experience. *In “Giancarlo Flati Intersezioni del Tempo” – Matteo Editore 2008. Lindsay is primarily a painter and installation artist. Her work is influenced by the primitive cultures of her youth in South Africa and the contrasting urban cultures of her adulthood in London, as she journeys through and between the two in search of meaning drawing from her life experiences. Many of the themes that run through her work look at how trauma imprints on the psyche and the healing and redemption that can come through faith. Her work tends towards the distressed – she works and reworks the surface allowing the process to lead her, as if the work is deciding what it will be and her role is to uncover it

Infinite Energy, oil on canvas-(triptych), 64x30 inches, 2013 There is a hyper realism to her work that is rarely used simultaneously with emotion, a pull, a belief. And yet all of these qualities are undeniably trademarks of her work. She uses realistic form because of its beauty – plain and simple. But the work displays visionary, intuitive symbolism because of the totally dreamlike and magical qualities present – which leads to the emotional attraction of the work and, for most people, a deeper meaning. And by the way, isn’t that what we are? – realistic form with deeper meaning? Our bodies are tangible. Our purpose and meaning are not – until we manifest them. This body of work is the manifestation of the meaning and connection she perceives we all have in life to nature, each other, and to all that is.

I grew up in Southern California skateboarding, playing Atari, and collecting comic books and Garbage Pail Kids. I became obsessed with art history and with the technical skills I developed drawing as a child, I started to stretch. Painting in oils became my focus along with some experimental work. I received my BA from San Diego State University in Painting with a minor in Art History in 2004. Then in 2006 I moved to the rural north of Japan. The Japanese language and arts of ikebana, zen gardens, ukiyo-e, and anime have heavily influenced my work. I have since returned to San Diego and been changed deeply by Japan which has led me back into drawing as a means of meditation. My work is now done primarily on a small scale and monochromatically in red ink. Ink is an unforgiving medium much like life; there is no erasing mistakes or over painting – one must stay in the moment.

The drawings have a figurative, narrative atmosphere and show a world in which often-unexpected relations between different elements confront the viewer with unclear feelings and certain confusion; beautiful but odly mysterious, disquieting. The work is not so much influenced by the art historical context, but is more related to a wider view of human experience, relations between cultures and relations between the self and other. The protagonists, whether human or animal, are enigmatic, elusive and seem absorbed in their own world.

I travelled to Europe for 2 weeks in October 2011 and visited New York for my exhibition for a further 2 weeks, and these trips gave a new direction to my work as I observed bridges and the landscapes around them in their original colours. I couldn’t effort myself an art study. After I moved to Austria, I started painting, because I realized it helped me through hard times. Painting, for me, feels like a therapy. I can relax and it’s a good way to calm yourself. I try to show people the beauty of our world through my paintings. I always see the good and beautiful in everyone and everything around me. As a mother of three children I have a lot of work, so I really enjoy the time off. I get myself a coffee, sit down and let all my thoughts flow into a painting.

The Red in my works has a deep meaning. In Russian language the word ‘red’ often has an equal meaning to the word ‘beautiful’. Russian writer Fyodor Dostoevsky said ‘Beauty will save the World’, so I believe that in my works I transform my perception of the ‘red’ as ‘beautiful’ into a symbol of ‘saving the world’. I believe that a purpose of art is keeping the world in balance and harmony. It’s an honour, but also a huge responsibility to be an artist. Artists are responsible for what we are bringing to the world within our creativity, for every single brush stroke we produce. I believe that images and objects created with passion can transform reality. We all create the world around, and the more positive and beautiful art created today, the better will be the world to live in tomorrow. Beauty will Save the World and Art IS this powerful tool to bring the Beauty to the World – to Save it.

Ishi – a wellknown member of the Caribbean post-colonial avant-garde – had so far been associated with the representation of the Black Diasporic experience. In these works, however, form and scale itself became the message. These austere, black and white paintings consist of multiple icons and patterns, which are inverted, repeated and adjusted in ever-changing combinations. Given the difficult conditions under which artists like Ishi exist, the most compelling aspect of the series is its virtually architectural scale, and the unapologetic insistence on their own materiality.

Every single journey of lifetime, a man experiences various situations arousing his happiness, suffering, sadness and loneliness. Moreover, the fast approach of several temptations seduces those men into obsession of corporeality, taste and scent of dream. However, the human emotion varies. It depends on many factors; inside and outside of his mind. Only ephemeral and instability of moods can fade away his obsessions in each day. But if we scrutinize them, they define themselves. Those are lingering experiences in his mind which lead us to contemplation. They create the world of imagination awaiting you to discover them.

There are a few good examples of it throughout the centuries – ranging from the elegant play of light in the paintings of Dutch artists of the seventeenth century to the harsh, at times exaggerated, chiaroscuro in the work of some contemporary artists.

Carol is a self taught artist whose work is influenced by the Art Nouveau era and the Dutch artist M. C. Escher. Art Nouveau was mainly based on nature with natural shapes and forms. Escher also based a lot of his art on nature but used distortion, fantasy and metamorphosis to produce his outstanding work. Carol works in coloured pencil, pastels or a combination of both as well as black and white drawing. The foundation for her work is nature with slight variations so anything different or unusual appeals to her, hence the name for her work “Natural Fantasy.

David’s recent work explores the subliminal effects of media such as billboards, logos and computer games on our cognition and in turn our relationship with our physical environment, be it a landscape, motorway flyover or the decoration in an interior. He regards his work as a synthesis of an inner and outer world. Paintings of a highly stylized abstract landscape may have an unnatural intervention imposed on them or the opposite where figurative scenes of nature encroach upon an urban setting. His work is influenced by SF writers such as Olaf Stapledon, J.G. Ballard, Philip K. Dick and Charles Stross.

La Danza Macabra I, silkscreen on wood, 38x48x3 inches, 2011 Growing up in Moscow during the post-Soviet Era, I witnessed a dramatic transformation of Russian people and culture. This societal change, reinforced by my personal experiences, influenced my interest in an individuals’ way to self recognition, emotional conflicts and struggle with the indoctrination that accompanies modern life. With the use of metaphorical characters and surreal setting, I portray man and the world as a complex tangle of strings where each character consists of polar emotions and unpredictable reactions. Humanity balances, blindfolded on a thread of existence between dualities – love and loss; life and death – in the search for values and purpose.

Birgit L. Dörfer creates scenes of nature. Rivers, lakes, mountains and trees have the air of Japanese miniature drawings: whispered, outlined, shaded. Her works exude meditative balance and inner peace. The artist uses predominantly acrylic paints and is thus capable of depicting natural phenomena in a most inspiring and original fashion. The painter is best known, however, for her unusual and delicate Feng-Shui-Collages. The technique behind their manufacturing was developed by her and combines the Far Eastern science of Feng-Shui with modern art, rendering her works unique in Germany. The aim is to evoke positive feelings and to instill calm and serenity. Moreover, her works are imaginative decorations for any kind of living space. 168

Every topic, the colours and composition of each single painting, are given to me in quiescence and are then transferred onto canvas. The interplay of the objective and the non-objective generates tension: The real importance lies in the disconnection of the painting from possible associations. Apart from their positive effects on the atmosphere in the room, the painting also leads the viewer to his own inner life and feelings. If a painting appeals to someone in such a way, there is an inner resonance to the topic and the viewer finds mental balance at a deep emotional level.

Since then the painting became an unseparable part of her life. She works with her subconscious, intuition. With the use of imagination by music and of meditation she penetrates into the unconscious.

The focus of my artistic creation is the human being in connection with his activities, actions and desires which determine and form his fate – the human who creates his ‘surreality’. If I had to characterize my style, I should call it ‘magical surrealism’ with indefinite boundaries between reality and dream. So I would like to invite the spectator to be witness to the interaction of the states where the reality escapes into the dream and the dream will turn to some aspects of the reality. In contrast with other representatives of the various art movements, I do not doubt the traditional values of art, but I try to find a new way and to use them in an updated context. The assertion of Delacroix “The painting must be a feast for the eye” is for me still up to date and significant and it opens up for me new perspectives to implement my artistic ideas.

And, over the past five years, mixed media collage has become my primary medium. I am inspired by the human spirit; and working colors, patterns, rhythm, and repetition into my compositions. I like seeing how many ways I can use an element yet keep it fresh and different from how I used it previously. Lately, I’ve been repurposing earlier works because I like seeing the essence of older works transformed anew. Attention to detail and storytelling bring fluidity, movement, and a cinematic quality to my art – each piece reading like the part of a greater whole.

Her work is about her experiences as a female immigrant and spirituality from nature and culture from East and West. “I create to share experiences I’ve had in America filtered by the culture I grew up in. When people ask me what artists influenced my work the most and I mention old Korean paintings, it puzzles and confuses those with only knowledge of Western art and its artists. I know it especially challenges those who feel superior to Asian culture. I use Sumi ink, water based colors, Calligraphic brush strokes, strange marks, and texts in foreign languages. As a result, they see waxy surfaces and numerous mysterious layers. A work that doesn’t belong to any categories of art makes them wonder. Is it a painting or a print? Where is the root coming from? There is no connection to Western art tradition that they can easily refer to. The strange foreign object has something they never knew before. Something that they cannot clearly describe or explain makes them uncomfortable, yet curious.”

His works wants to leave the space occupied by the void free, the essence which they contain. He speaks to us through his sculptures of physical, material, fragility but it is easy to discern that for MartĂ Moreno the void is stronger, it is permanently there, between spirit and body. This may be the reason why they are disintegrating, maybe they are always opening. Body - matter, yes, but also, Essence - Void. (Carmela Falomir Ventura)

After college, I was employed as a graphic artist in South Jersey and in 1983 joined the US Air Force. I received an honourable discharge and attained a civilian position as an illustrator in Hunsruck, Germany. After four years, I returned to the states pursuing other occupations which lead me back to the arts. By 2010, I was selfemployed as a designer and sculptor. The sculptures are abstracts derived from prototypes I’ve created and are expressed by line and colour. They are a composition of continual lines that are built using layers creating a relief. The intent of my art is to keep evolving into more movement and symmetry but still focusing on simplicity and non-chaotic compositions.

What intrigues her is how she merges herself into the object, how she steeps herself into the process to create spontaneously and intuitively, opening the layers, in search for what lies behind the overt, what is hidden within. The concept of her works exists in the marriage between two poles: aspiration for meticulous and restrained aesthetic on the one hand, and unrestricted spontaneous and intuitive search on the other, the understading of the integration between perfection and freedoom. The politics of invisible labor is a subtext for her work. As an immigrant, she is interested in under-appreciated, invisible, and Sisyphean labor practices. In solidarity, she uses her art practice to symbolically mimic her mother’s labor as a seamstress. Additionally, through the repetitive use of materials such as rice, denim scraps, salt, and sweat, she pulls upon rich social histories and meanings, and utilize these to create a personal mythology of materials. The repetitious use of pattern and aesthetics is reminiscent of the Pop Art movement, artists such as Bridget Riley and some of the artists of the sixty’s. The sculptures are made from very mundane found objects mirroring the Dada movement, and are transformed into colourful unique works of art.
A women’ s work is never done mixed media construction, using pvc fabric, cord and found object.

Spar, cast concrete and steel, 37x25x5 inches, 2012
As an architect, William Steinberg designed for steel and concrete, but he now sculpts it directly; he is his own iron worker and mason. His immersion in the act of making involves a myriad of experiments and reactions that send his pieces in unexpected directions. Beneath his patinas we see structures that function as memorials to ingenuity, or as prophetic shards of future ruins, where the facade of veneer has eroded away leaving only skeletal members exposed, like conceptual lines in space that architects once drew (From George Rammell review – William Steinberg/Architect of the Ruin).

RobinAntar
www.rantar.com
Robin Antar’s passion as a sculptor involves a technique she coined more than 20 years ago – the precise art of creating “virtual records” of contemporary culture… capturing everyday objects in carved stone. She is ambivalent about what she sculpts... these foodstuffs, yet she loves to carve them since she recognizes their significance far beyond what they represent on a store shelf or on someone’s table. Who can know if a bottle of ketchup will exist in 4025AD? Or if a can of soda can stand the test of time as well? In the nature of Vanitas paintings, she strives for an absolute realism in texture and form from a solid block of stone. Her sculptures are a record of the present; a preservation of the mundanities and morbidities of our culture for references in years to come. „Essentially, I replicate these items on a real life-scale, complete with meticulous detail. I achieve this absolute realism by incorporating parts of the actual object, as well as custom-made stains, paints, plastics and gold leaf. It’s more than art imitating life; it’s art-mirroring life.

Lacking a rhythmic family structure, she picked up sewing, crocheting, and knitting at an early age, literally stitching her way through hard times. In the 1970s and 80s Bergstedt studied a wide range of traditional art techniques, concentrating in hand-colored photography and giving vision to memories from her childhood. She continued her studies and art practice while working as a fund development professional, transitioning to fiber art and completing private commissions for jewelry and clothing design after hours. Returned to full-time art since 2006, Bergstedt has combined the conceptual roots of her photographic images with the fiber and design skills first employed to mentally ground her childhood. Memories and life challenges inspire the themes of her recent fiber sculptures, which have been selected for 68 juried exhibitions, seven books, three interviews and 16 awards. Her work has been included in twenty press publications including Germany’s Textile Forum, England’s embroidery magazine, and Fiber Art Now in the USA.

My ideas can come to me from a variety of different sources, such as a short daydream to an unrelated conversation with someone or from just watching a TV show. In a lot of my work you will find traces of inspiration from great artists such as Rob Gonsalves, M.C.Escher, Salvador Dali and John Pugh as well as from TV shows such as The Twilight Zone series, Supernatural, The Lost Room and even Dungeons and Dragons. I strive for there to be an emotional reaction within my work that may not always become apparent until the viewer learns the title of the piece. In some of my darker work I like the viewer to be a little uncomfortable without the piece being distasteful.

Indeed, most of the people are happy with conventional sights and aspects of the world. Surrounding reality is actually not always as it looks like. One way to discover the hidden aspects of the reality is intuitive: try to find out the secondary meaning of the staff. This might be labeled a philosophical way. The other way to display is to process the image to a scale that normal sight usually does not perceive. This is the way I photographed for my project.

NovaScotia Living #12, fine art print, 60x40 cm, 2012 Paul-Juergen Weber lives and works in Cologne, Germany. Art works since 1968, at first painting and assemblages, since the 1980 ies primarily photography. Source to his photographs is the visible reality as it is. His particular feature is to discover, select and process the intrinsic essence from the huge diversity and variety of forms and substances to be converted into his creative artwork. The key to this kind of art is to realize it’s quality subjectively by the respective sentiments of the individual beholder. Thus his artwork wants to touch people and at the best to fascinate and to inspire. Andalusian Almond Trees #5, fine art print, 60x40 cm, 2013

Patricia DeSaedeleer was born in Argentina, from Belgium descent. My family who changed residents every two to three years, forced me to make my own world to cope with the constant changes, schools friends etc. Drawn to art from a very early age. My first camera was given to me at the age of 11, I got obsessed in taking pictures of my family and surrounding. Later I got involved with local musicians which gave me the opportunity to experiment with total freedom, expanding my technique, always exploring the invisible world, unconsciousness, dreams or nightmares. Have dedicated these last years more on this thematic. Mostly based on analogue-photography, mixed with digital.

Red and Grey, digital photo, 25x19 inches, 2013 Although the world suffers under the adverse influence of industrialized society, it remains pregnant with beauty. As a photographer, I strive to be a mid-wife, to give birth to this beauty that arises in the trembling moment like an epiphany. I cannot really say how this happens. My process rests upon faith that if I am receptive and open, the image will present itself as a gift. I look to record compositions that are complete, balanced, unified, and supported by compelling subject matter. I seek to convey a sense of transcendence, spirituality, and deep connection with the world. Wu We, digital photo, 25x19 inches, 2013

Water Dancing c-print on aludibond 120x90 cm 2013 Tolga Sezen dares the way from photo towards painting. During his creative process the realistic image becomes abstract. The „planned“ randomness plays a substantial role in his work. He was born in Istanbul 1965, as a child of a liberal, cosmopolitan artist family. In his youth, he went to Vienna, studied computer engineering and finally he became an autodidact in photography and digital photo processing. His artwork is photography-based. The first trigger of his carreer as an artist has been an exhibition with photorealistic works. Tolga Sezen: The moment of the transformation of a photo to a digital painting is magical – like a slightly approaching dream, searching its way from reality to an illuminated new existence…

Dancing photography 2013
My photography is about meeting beautiful people, who often do not fit in or seem strange. It is about creating an atmosphere in witch people can flourish and explore, with me trying to capture something of their beauty, soul and quest. I am never looking for perfect bodies or perfect faces. It is the look in someone’s eyes that intrigues me. All photos are results of improvisation and intuition. I choose a model and a location, depending on the weather, mood of the day, model-interaction and the settings, then the image is born. The editing afterwards is stripped to a bare minimum and only used to emphasize an atmosphere. 246

Born in PEI, Canada. BFA in painting, Mount Allison University. Studio in Ottawa, Canada. “Since the 70’s my photo-based art has pushed the envelope technically and visually, often going beyond the “traditional” depiction of subjects, teasing viewers to find their own answers influenced by their own history. I play with what is real and what seems real but isn’t. My photo-based art unearths new vistas, concepts, truths, re-presenting the world , inviting us to see otherwise. In these images from my Urban Jazz suite, I use the camera as a “brush”, painting with light, transforming urban reality with movement.”

At one point it seems like a sea of rare chemicals on a distant planet, at another it resembles a monstrous bird.” GOGO Gasom Plasm, Spray painted Mural in Hackney, 33x12 ft, 2012
