By Chris Berzas Pulling up to a reef in late April, Capt. Bill Lake and his clients began a series of casts using a few topwater plugs. “We found dead, calm waters that morning,” Lake said. After the anglers enjoyed a round of dogwalking these lures on top, there were 20 good specks placed in the cooler. When the topwater bite came to a halt, some anglers began casting VuDu Shrimp under popping corks, whereas others started throwing Tsunami Bunker swimbaits. The trout action restarted as a result. “We ended up with limits – 75 speckled trout measuring 14 to 20 inches,” he said. “It was cast-aftercast, nonstop action. “And these fish were just beautiful, some truly fat speckled trout.” As these specks reached the cooler, they started spitting out glass minnows and two-inch pogies, and Capt. Lake made a special note of that. Just three days later on the very first weekend in May, the reef trip appeared to be only a minor prelude to more action to come resulting in even greater numbers of fish. “The weekend weather was so good, and so was the timing of the full moon,” Lake said. Capt. Lake’s team of captains worked the waters near Oyster Bayou thoroughly, and these anglers included Ricky Brondum, Brady Giroir, Rodney Bourque and Alden Bonvillain. “This team of captains ran 12 trips in a three-day span catching 825 trout and 52 redfish,” Lake said. “The trout fishing was as good as I’ve seen in years, and the numbers of fish were truly incredible for this early.” For the weekend, these

captains had their hands and coolers full of fish when casting double-rigged, 3.5-inch Egret Baits Wedgetail Mullets and Bayou Chubs. “When you have five guys slinging in fish two-at-a-time on every cast, it didn’t take long to fill the coolers with fish,” he said. “We fished four different locations on that weekend, and we found trout stacked up at every stop.” And if that weren’t enough, Lake went out again Sunday afternoon with Bayou Catholic managing editor Lawrence Chatagnier, Capt. Pat Olivier and Craig Major to catch another 100 speckled trout. “We jumped all over the trout at our first stop with double-rigged Wedgetail Mullets and chickenon-a-chain Bayou Chubs,” Lake said. “Those trout ranged 14 to 18 inches and we ended up with some beautiful yellowmouths.” Certainly these were exceptional trips, and Capt. Lake has positive predictions for catching summer speckled trout in waters on the Terrebonne Parish coastline. “Last year, we ended up with 14,800 speckled trout taken,” he
said. “This is down from the 18,200 we caught the year before. “And from what I am seeing now based on the catches we have already experienced, I am expecting an average year.” Lake said that this is just a preliminary summer forecast as he’ll know more when shrimp show up in the area. As the summer progresses, Lake makes a persuasive argument for anglers to fish south. “Areas such as Pelican Pass, Taylor Bayou, Pass Wilson and Bay Round may produce,” he said. It’s still too early to tell however if the tons of concrete rip-rap that replaced the Pickets will be a constant area of finding trout, although catches there in early May were impressive. “There is also the Enstar platform and the Mardi Gras rigs that will probably still produce,” Lake said. Regarding lures for the area’s speckled trout, Capt. Lake strongly recommends Egret Baits’ Wedgetail Mullets and Bayou Chubs cast singly or on double-rigs. And of course VuDu Shrimp cast under VuDu Rattling corks will produce
whenever the birds are working over shrimp and fish. Tsunami Bunker swimbaits also work well for Lake and his clients. Colors that work well are important, and Lake has special fondness for chicken-on-a-chain, Cajun pepper and LSU colors for his Wedgetail Mullets and Bayou Chubs. Captain Bill Lake can be reached at (985) 851-6015. You can also visit his website at www.captlake. com. Regarding Louisiana regulations, anglers are reminded that they may take and keep 25 speckled trout per person at 12-inches minimum total length – except the 15 fish daily take and possession limit, with no more than two spotted seatrout exceeding 25 inches total length, regardless of where taken in a defined area of Cameron and Calcasieu Parishes in southwestern Louisiana. Please consult the 2015 Louisiana Fishing Regulations Pamphlet before heading out in coastal waters this summer.

Fishing brute redfish in inland waters By Chris Berzas Fishing well inland in Turner’s Bay in northern Calcasieu Lake, I happened to throw a small, 3.5inch plastic Bayou Chub into a huge, thick school of ladyfish. My buddy, Craig Vidrine and I were tired of losing live shrimp to these mini-tarpons, so we began throwing plastics in an effort to deter bites from these numerous finned pests. Every now and then the flapping wings of seagulls would hover over us and the birds would dive into the water. Bayou Catholic • Houma, LA • June 2015
We both initially thought such was due to the thousands of ladyfish feasting on huge swarms of shrimp invading the cove. Suddenly I felt a hit and set the hook. Yards and yards of braid metered off my reel’s spool, and my rod stayed in a continuous bend as the fish just kept running. We were fishing in two to four feet of water, so the huge fish kept running shallow in an effort to stay with the birds. “I don’t think this fish cares if it’s hooked,” I said to Vidrine.
CHRIS BERZAS PHOTOS
“It’s keeping up with the birds so it must be in a school.” But when I looked at my buddy, he too was engaged in his own battle. “We got a double going,” I said. The fish finally tired about 40 yards out and I could finally see a copper-bronze body emerge close to the top. “It’s a good red,” I said to Vidrine. About seven to 10 minutes later, we were measuring a couple of big reds, one at 30 inches and Vidrine’s a 28-incher. And we released both fish.
a
“There were some huge reds in that school,” Vidrine said. During these days, we have come to expect catching bull reds inshore most anywhere in Louisiana. Once reserved to locations such as Venice, Last Island and the Timbaliers in southeast Louisiana, bull reds have now infiltrated inland lakes, salt bays and even river systems throughout Louisiana. The current state record bull redfish is a 61-pounder taken out of waters south of Cocodrie by David Weber in June 1992. Nowadays however, it is becoming more and more a possibility that a redfish this size could even be caught well inshore. Peter Broussard of Houma had fished Terrebonne Parish all of his life. When he was younger, he fished Last Island and Timbalier Island for bull reds and scores of speckled trout, but now the 72-year-old anglers enjoys great moments taking both of these species in nearby Lake Boudreaux. “I have taken 31-inch redfish
right here in the marsh,” the angler said. “Last Sunday (May 3), I caught a 28-incher.” Broussard said there are plenty places to find shallow-water big reds in the Lake Boudreaux area alone. “I was able to see 25 redfish where I was fishing, and I caught four of them,” he said. Broussard sight-fishes for these redfish by tightlining and swimming Egret Baits’ 3.5-inch Wedgetail Mullets. His favorite colors for this swimbait include chicken-on-achain, purple-chartreuse (LSU), opening-night and Cajun-pepper. In the early morning, Broussard will dogwalk topwaters such as MirrOlure’s She Dogs and Top Dog Juniors. The angler has taken many big redfish and loads of slot reds in these waters. No discussion about big redfish can leave out Venice, as this area has been hailed as the number one Bull Redfish destination in the United States. And Greg Hackney, the reigning
Bassmaster Angler of the Year of Gonzales, treasures his time spent in these waters when not competing on the Elite tournament trail. When making a press trip with Hackney in his duties as host of Louisiana Sportsman TV, he and guide Sal Gagliano caught bulls at will on Strike King’s Red Eye Shad and Rage Shrimp. The Venice bull red bite is best under an outgoing tide but occurs also during an occasional incoming. Locations where these angler find the famed Venice bulls include: Main Pass, South Pass, the Southwest Pass jetties, Pass a Loutre, Tiger Pass, Octave Pass and Baptiste Collette Bayou. The bull red bite in Venice intensifies when the Mississippi River gage at Carrollton is at seven feet and falling. There you have it, a summary of bull redfish prospects for summer 2015. It’s time to get ready to tango with these huge copper/bronze brutes now occurring all over Louisiana’s coastline to include inland marshes. 11

When fishing gives you lemons
k o ho,em
18 By Chris Berzas The satellite rigs just offshore of Venice actually beaconed great expectations for all aboard Capt. Sal Gagliano’s vessel (Southeast Charters, (504) 782-7593). The first with a rod in hand was none other than Louisiana’s own Greg Hackney, host of Louisiana Sportsman TV and current Bassmaster Angler of the Year. Louisiana Sportsman TV producer Jared Serigne’ was aboard filming the event and even getting into some fishing between takes. Hackney was the first on the deck to cast one of Gagliano’s homemade cobia jigs toward the first structure. The professional angler worked the jig by moving it along and swimming it in the depths that Gagliano had suggested. “He’s on,” Hackney said with rod arching and drag spurting. Hackney began running fore and aft on Gagliano’s vessel, his reel metering out line to the fish’s very strong thrusts. Suddenly and without warning, Hackney’s line went slack. Gagliano had another rod ready complete with jig tied on, and in no time Hackney had another fish on. With his drag screaming again and line metering out into the depths, the angler had another battle on his hands. The lemonfish came up to the surface on a few occasions as Serigne’ filmed and photos were taken. Hackney’s prize was gaffed and a few minutes later, he stood on the deck showing off his cobia weighing near the 30-pound mark on the Boga. Bayou Catholic • Houma, LA • June 2015
Moving over to another satellite rig just south of our initial location, Gagliano had Hackney moving that jig again and another fight ensued. This time it was a smaller cobia (lemonfish, lemon, ling), yet one meeting the required length of 33 inches. Both fish were placed in the cooler. “Look to waters 30 to 40 feet deep, and just ease up to these rigs with your trolling motor,” Gagliano said referring to waters south of Venice. “Sometimes you’ll have to work your jig up from the bottom, and at other times these fish can be taken by making shallower casts and just reeling that jig in with some twitching,” he said. “But there’s certainly plenty of lemonfish to be taken at these rigs.” For the many anglers who race to the rigs in the summer, the first highly prized species they encounter are cobia. And for certain there’s enough satellite rigs and larger oil platforms spread all along the coastline where anglers can find ample opportunity to find them. Other structures in Gulf waters that notoriously attract cobia include just about any debris that floats (flotsam), pilings, other wooden structures and marker buoys. Of all the fish near rigs, cobia are certainly inquisitive. Upon the arrival of fishing boats, they may disappear for a few minutes then suddenly be seen again a little later prowling just beneath the surface. Many vessels will slowly approach flotsam or a rig in order that anglers can visually inspect the water’s surface to spot the long, sleek silhouettes of these fish. Cobia’s heads are flat and their body is dark

brown with a dark lateral stripe that runs from the eye to the tail. Novice anglers on offshore ventures who encounter these beauties for the first time usually mistake them for small sharks. This species will frequent Louisiana waters from May through late September. As for tackle, medium/heavy and heavy baitcasting and spinning equipment are used to catch these great fish. Capt. Gagliano uses seven-foot medium/heavy spinning rods complete with Shimano 4000 reels spooled with 30-pound PowerPro braid. He makes his own lures for lemons, red-headed jigheads with white and chartreuse streamers. These large jigs with streamers are popular for the cobia angler. Brightly-colored plastic lures imitating baitfish configurations in the five to seven inch range will also work. Many anglers will simply cast large pieces of cut bait that are of size to slowly sink where these fish appear. They’re a prized specimen to most all anglers, and cubed, fried cuts of their delicious flesh also make a delightful start to any exquisite seafood platter at the lodge, camp, cabin or the menu right at home. Louisiana creel and length regulations for cobia (ling or lemon fish) are as follows: Two fish per person; 33 inches minimum fork length. Consult the 2015 Louisiana Fishing Regulations Pamphlet/Document for more regulations on this species. Hopefully, life when fishing this summer will throw you a few lemons. 19

A variety of finned species await
Offshore Anglers By Chris Berzas Capt. Tommy Pellegrin motored out of Little Pass on a tagging mission Sunday, May 3. “There were red snapper everywhere,” the 57-yearold angler of Houma said. 22 “Andre’ Thomas caught a snapper and unhooked it in order to tag the fish,” he said. “While he was doing this, his line and bare hook was just lying in the water and another snapper got a hold of it. “That’s how many red snapper are out there.” Needless to say, Pellegrin said that anglers venturing offshore for red snapper this summer won’t have any difficulties finding them. At the time of this writing, the Louisiana red snapper season continues to be open in Louisiana waters. The daily creel and bag limit is two fish per person at a 16inch minimum total length limit. The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries will issue the date of close in the future. The federal offshore season for red snapper was set to open June 1 and close at midnight June 10 with the same two fish, 16-inch minimum length limit. Louisiana offshore anglers can also look forward to finding cobia south of the Terrebonne coastline according to the angler. “They’re going to be farther out at first, and then as summer progresses cobia will stage shallower,” Pellegrin said. “We catch them on two ounce, High Life Tarpon jigs which work very well on these cobia,” he said. “Our top colors for cobia are orange/chartreuse and green/ chartreuse.” Cobia will often be found near the satellite rigs and often they’re caught following shrimp boats in the area. As for red snapper, Pellegrin has used Spanish sardines and cut bluefish, and the larger slabs Bayou Catholic • Houma, LA • June 2015

on the cut bluefish produced larger fish. Artifical baits for snapper also include High Life Tackle’s gold tiger Swimmers and spinnerbaits with Highlife glow-chartreuse Cocodrie Cocahoes. “We still have consistent, generous limits on mangrove snappers,” Pellegrin said. “And these fish will take live croakers, pogies and cut bait. Mangroves will run upward to seven pounds, and catches of 40 to 60 fish a day is possible by groups on charters. The limit per angler still remains at 10. Anglers targeting mangroves in numbers will be venturing out 10 to 15 miles offshore, and these fish can be found in 30 to 40 foot depths and sometimes even deeper. “July is the best month for mangrove snappers,” he said. “Anglers will also find good action for almaco jacks, yellowfin, marlin and swordfish in July. In August, the amberjack season opens and anglers will also be targeting these prized specimens which can range upward to 50 pounds. Other species offshore anglers will target in the summer include sand tiles, yellow-eye snapper, blackfin snapper, red porgy and knob porgy. Pellegrin will also spend much of the summer targeting speckled trout and redfish in waters near Cocodrie and Dularge. “Inshore right now, the speckled trout bite has been phenomenal,” Pellegrin said. “Sizes were really good and the average length was 18 inches with an average weight of 1.8 pounds,” he said. As for lures, Pellegrin caught these trout on High Life Tackle Coco-pepper and purple-gold (LSU) Anchovies. “Another good bait that has worked well for us is the Berkley Rattle Shrimp in the coastal candy color,” he said. “We worked that bait under a cork.” As for redfish, Pellegrin said anglers will find many in the sweetwater marsh ponds and bull reds in large groups off Timbalier. For more information and/or guide service, contact Capt. Tommy Pellegrin at (985) 851-3304 and you can visit his website at www.customchartersllc.com. Before heading out, anglers are urged to be extremely familiar with all state and federal saltwater regulations for your species of choice regarding length limits, creel limits and possession limits.

CHRIS BERZAS PHOTOS
Skinny water sight-fishing for
REDFISH By Chris Berzas It’s thrilling and exciting. And you never get quite enough of it. I always treasure the sight of seagulls hovering just above the waters in a canal within the marsh. Right below them will usually be a pod of redfish, their emerged backs and tail-fins moving and sashaying along the shorelines. On a summer afternoon, Capt. Robby Trahan (www. fishingsabinelake.com) and I witnessed this wonderful scene occurring along a canal within Bayou Catholic • Houma, LA • June 2015
a marsh located in the immense Sabine Lake Estuary. The tide was falling, and redfish were following baitfish exiting the marsh and into the canal. Just as soon as he saw the birds heading our way, Trahan shut off the trolling motor. “They’re coming, get ready,” he said. Positioned on the opposite side of the shoreline where the birds and reds were moving, we stood on the deck of the boat, silently and patiently with rods in our hand. As soon as they were 20 yards
away, Trahan was the first to cast an LSU Wedgetail Mullet and almost bumped a fish on its nose. These fish were not bashful, and one bit the plastic tail-bait immediately. The fight was on and Trahan made quick work of the fish hoisting it aboard. As the first fish flapped on the deck, the angler cast again with the same result. “I love it when you can see them coming,” Trahan said. “It’s so much fun, and these fish were hungry. After scoring on three slot
a
reds from that school, we picked up and left the area to find other redfish schooling in the lake itself. As the spring wanes into summer, these events will be repeated by scores of anglers looking for such action in the thousands of acres on marsh in lower Terrebonne Parish. And for the Bayou Catholic readership, there are many such areas south of Dularge and Houma to find some marsh slot reds (16 to 27 inches). For example, there is public access to marsh ponds and small interior lakes in and near Pointe-aux-Chenes Wildlife Management Area. To be quite frank, finding redfish in the marsh however isn’t always that easy, especially due to the stain of the water following summer showers and thunderstorms. Redfish will remain in these locations even with such freshwater influx especially if their prey is in the area. In late April for example, this occurred when scores of glass minnows (bay anchovies) were exiting marshes all along Louisiana’s coastline. On incoming tides, anglers were finding schools of redfish scouring the marshes foraging on this baitfish species. And on an outgoing tide, schools of reds were found exiting the marshes into interior canals and lakes following these small, silvery fish. The good news is that despite the dingy waters associated with rainfall, the redfish were there, and anglers enjoyed finding their wakes and tossing lures at them. During stained water conditions, it takes looking for the wakes these fish make when boats enter marsh ponds and shallow lakes. Cloudy water will usually follow these wakes as these fish scurry away. Trahan and I both prefer to fish interior marsh ponds under a morning sunrise if the tide is moving in at that time. Trahan will target these marsh fish by first casting 3.5-inch, Egret Baits Wedgetails tightlined right into the school. If this doesn’t work, he will try these plastics again under a coned, popping cork to add some noise on the water’s surface to get their attention. “This is probably one of my favorite things to do and that’s to find them by sight-fishing for reds as they school on top or when they push wakes,” the angler said. “Redfish will throw a steady, big wake right underneath the surface,” he explained. “You get so excited, just pumped up watching them when you see that wake. And in the shallow waters, they really put up a fight.” As morning shadows disappear, Trahan then switches to casting topwaters. The angler will dogwalk his
favorite topwater lures, Heddon’s Super Spook and the spectrum Spook Jr. The angler will cast all these lures medium/heavy American Rodsmith rods equipped with Lew’s baitcasting reels spooled with PowerPro braid. In open lakes or big ponds, Trahan will also look for schooling redfish by again looking for bird activity. “I’ll find these openwater reds working under both flying gulls and sitting gulls,” the angler said. “And it can be pretty quick with fish-after-fish taken near the birds – especially if the reds are feeding on schools of shrimp or pogies.” Anglers using shallow-drafting hulls have advantage when redfishing in skinny, marsh waters. Kayakers also relish chasing marsh redfish as their small crafts allow easier access to marsh areas that shallow-drafting bay boats cannot enter. So as summer advances, look to the marshes for skinny-water adventures catching redfish.

‘Fish Finder Rig’
26
By TERRY LACOSS One of my all time favorite, terminal saltwater fishing setups, is the “Fish Finder Rig.” This fish finder rig is a deadly saltwater fishing tactic for finding a wide variety of saltwater game fish when they are located on or close to the bottom. But in actuality, this setup can catch more and larger fish when all other fishing tactics fail. The fish finder rig is made up of a sinker, which is either threaded onto your terminal fishing line or attached to the line with a fish finder slide. The size of the sinker should allow your bait to drift slowly along the bottom. Next a round plastic bead is threaded on the line, and a barrel swivel is then tied to the tag end of your line. The business end of the fish finder rig includes an eighteen-inch shock leader, which is tied to the remaining eye of the barrel swivel. The leader length, line test and material may vary, depending on the variety of game fish you target. Finally, your saltwater hook is tied to the tag end of the shock leader. The fish finder rig is deadly for fishing live or dead baits right on the bottom. With this rig, your barbed bait is allowed to drift slowly along the bottom in search of feeding game fish. Once a fish is hooked, a second drop should be made to that same exact location.

By TERRY LACOSS After several minutes of coming up empty handed, I turned on the bottom lock feature on my Hummingbird fish finder, so that we could better identify these small schools of runners, down near the bottom. We were forced to upgrade our light bait-catcher outfits with big saltwater, twenty-pound class spinning rods and reels. This was a must for deepjigging big hard tails that often weigh over two pounds. We also replaced the two ounce. Torpedo sinkers that normally attached to our bait catcher rigs. We replaced these with eight ounce. Torpedo shaped sinkers. Now we were able to lower the heavier sinkers into the middle of the small schools of runners, after identifying them with the fish finder. Before, the small schools of runners were moving so fast that the light sinkers were simply missing the target. Beef up your bait-catcher rigs, when jigging in the extreme depths of water and you will surely fill your bait well in a hurry with deepwater baitfish.

The truth is some saltwater fishermen have found ways to attract more game fish into striking their transom baits. Vicious strikes to these anglers become an everyday occurrence. But more importantly, the size of the fish that attack these transom baits are often the biggest catch of the day. If you have an outboard powered boat, we often call these baits, “Prop Wash” baits. The baits are literally fished only a few feet in back of the prop wash. The outboard motor is actually trimmed up until it begins to cavitate. Now you have a combination of flashing blades on the surface with the propeller creating turbulence on the surface as well. Skilled fishermen who have learned how to flash fish with their propellers, have also found that bigger baits and lures result in more success while using this deadly trolling tactic.

Fish scents work
Another study proved that some fishermen give off offensive enzymes from their hands. So when touching baits and lures, they are more than likely scaring off the game fish they are trying to catch. Saltwater fishermen are guilty of adding to this dilemma when they apply suntan oils to their hands and body. Naturally the suntan oil is needed to protect the skin from the harmful rays of the sun. However, when the same fishermen handle baits and lures, they are also decreasing their chances of catching quality game fish. For this one reason, we will normally designate one or more fishermen in the boat to handle baits and lures. The suntan lotion is applied by someone else, and their hands are not allowed to touch baits or lures.
