COVER STORY

Meet our Home Team shooting stars There’s something remarkably consistent about people who excel in hitting their target – that quiet yet fierce determination that shines through when they take their aim. Frontline speaks to three of our best shooters from the Home Team.

Mark of a marksman “You shoot to beat yourself, not others,” said Mr Lum Yew Wing, 59, a veteran air rifle shooter who represented Singapore in the SEA Games from 1973 to 1982. “Shooting has given me discipline and focus, and this has equipped me to deal with challenges in life,” said Mr Lum, who continues to practice twice a week at the HomeTeamNS range at the Bukit Batok clubhouse. The love for shooting is also clearly evident in pistol shooter Mr Chua Song Heng, 49, who shoots at the National Shooting Centre every weekend. “Shooting is my way of keeping fit,” said Mr Chua, who practices the IPSC (International Practical Shooting Confederation) style of shooting, where shooters move to take out static and moving targets as quickly as possible. “I need to think fast on my feet, and we never shoot the same course twice in IPSC.” Another sharpshooter who trains religiously is national archer Clarice Ong, 14. Since picking up the sport at the HomeTeamNS archery range in early 2011, she won her first gold medal within six months, and made the national team in April this year. “I keep practising to maintain my form, and I do plenty of push-ups and sit-ups for strength,” said Clarice, who trains six times a week and continues to compete while juggling her studies.

Shooting for a cause So what keeps our shooters going? What motivates them? “At first I picked up archery because I wanted a CCA with more points,” said Clarice. “Now I aim to represent Singapore at international events such as the SEA Games.” It helps that she is not the only archer in the family – her mother and sister are both avid archers with HomeTeamNS. For Mr Chua Song Heng, who is the founder and chairman of the HomeTeamNS Practical Shooting Club, the motivation is both practical and primal. “Practical shooting is an essential skill for all law enforcement officers, as the first person to react correctly is the one who lives to tell the tale,” said Mr Chua. “It also feels great when I pull the trigger and see a hole in the target!”

Chua Song Heng, 49 Pistol

• Part of Singapore contingent at IPSC (International Practical Shooting Confederation) events since 2010 • Chairman and founder of HomeTeamNS Practical Shooting Club

To Mr Lum Yew Wing, coaching the young is a meaningful way to give back for all that the sport has given him. “In my youth I was shooting competitively, when I grew older it became a social activity with my friends, and now when I am wiser I coach our young ones.” Today Mr Lum spends his time between his engineer job and coaching young shooters at Jurong Junior College. His love for the sport has influenced his family as well – three of his four children are also shooters who represented their schools and clubs in competitions.

Coffee in a Capsule Four brands for the perfect home ex-presso!

Coffee capsule machines are hot these days, and it’s easy to see why. Pop a capsule, press a button and get a perfect brew every time – no barista training needed! These machines pump hot water at high pressure to extract all the notes from the coffee blend, which stays fresh thanks to the hermetically sealed capsule. What’s more, the spent coffee powder stays in the disposable capsule, so there’s hardly any cleaning up compared to traditional espresso or drip coffee machines. Check out four of the best capsule systems here!

In Singapore, Nespresso is arguably the yardstick other machines are measured against. The entry-level Essenza makes only espresso (40ml) or lungo (110ml), but bears the Nespresso hallmark of producing consistent results. Add your desired amount of water and frothed milk to make your Americano, latte or cappuccino. If you’d like some creamy milk froth for your cuppa, consider getting Nespresso’s Aeroccino, which is sold separately. For cappuccino lovers, the higherend Lattissima offers automatic cappuccino preparation, a built-in milk frother and a hot water dispenser in a classy package. With a choice of more than 16 types of capsules that’s a breeze to order online, it’s no wonder the Nespresso system is so popular here. Prices $319 for Essenza, $688 for Lattissima, $160 for Aeroccino, around $1 for a capsule Flavours More than 16 types of coffee (including espresso, lungo and decaf varieties), plus limited edition blends www.nespresso.com/sg

LATTISSIMA

6

Illy

CIRCOLO

Dolce Gusto

Although espresso flavours are limited compared to Nespresso, Dolce Gusto machines also make macchiato, mocha, cappuccino (hot/iced) and tea (hot/iced). Preparations needing milk will require two capsules per cup, one for milk and one for coffee/tea. Targeted at the general market, these machines are designed to be funky and more affordable compared to Nespresso. Capsules are also easily available online and at various supermarket chains. Both the entry-level Piccolo and higher-end Circolo accepts all Dolce Gusto capsules, with Circolo a more refined offering with automatic stop, a larger water tank and a capsule bin. Do note that Nespresso and Dolce Gusto capsules are not compatible, although both brands are by Nestlé. Prices $189 for Piccolo, $339 for Circolo Automatic, around $0.70 for a capsule Flavours More than 10 types of coffee and tea (including espresso, cappuccino, chai tea latte, macchiato, mocha and chococino) www.dolce-gusto.com.sg

Fans of Illy coffee, rejoice! The Iperespresso capsule system makes it easy to enjoy great Illy coffee right at home. Like the Nespresso, Iperespresso machines focus on making quality espresso. The iconic Francis Francis X7.1 even looks like a slimmer version of a traditional espresso machine, down to the steam wand used for frothing milk, but all you need to do is pop a capsule in its “Portafilter”. No tamping needed! More good news – it’s now easier than ever to find Iperespresso capsules and machines in Singapore. Pick them up at selected FairPrice Finest supermarts, Tangs and Courts stores, as well as the Espressamente Illy cafe at Studio M Hotel. Prices $699 for the Francis Francis X7.1, around $1 for a capsule Flavours More than four types of espresso www.euraco.com.sg

CONTATA

CBTL

The versatile CBTL (Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf) machines make espresso, brewed coffee and tea. Coffee lovers who wish to switch between espresso and brewed coffee will welcome this convenience. Additional chocolate and vanilla powder sachets are also available to create mocha and vanilla coffee beverages. CBTL uses the Caffitaly system, which means they can accept other brands of capsules that are Caffitaly-compatible. Bring home the familiar taste of Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf with the classic entry-level Contata and the milk frother accessory. You can buy CBTL machines and capsules online or at most Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf outlets in Singapore. Prices $299 for Contata, $168 for the milk frother, around $0.90 for a capsule and around $1.50 for a powder sachet Flavours More than 14 types of coffee and tea (including espresso, brewed coffee and flavoured tea varieties) www.cbtl.com.sg

YOUNG TALENT — SCDF

SINGING SENSATION CPL (NS) Clarence Liew is making his voice heard on YouTube

Singapore’s got talent. With his smooth vocals and nifty guitar work, CPL (NS) Clarence Liew has garnered more than 150,000 views and 2,000 subscribers on his YouTube channel (www.youtube.com/ clarenceliewmusic). The self-taught guitarist, who also goes by the stage name of “CLO”, tells Frontline what keeps him going. What did you do in the SCDF? I was an instructor at the National Service Training Institute. Besides serving as an instructor, I was also part of the SCDF’s Music and Performing Arts Club (MPAC).

How did you become so good in what you do? I won’t say I’m particularly good in what I do. What I did was to follow my heart and focus on being true to my music. I sing and practice as often as I can. As I had no professional training in music, being in MPAC helped me improve a great deal, as I learnt from other talented musicians who were really helpful in teaching me about music. What’s next in your music career? I’m moving on to produce my own originals and have them out on the radio. Stay tuned on my Facebook page (www.facebook.com/ clarenceliewmusic) for updates! Any advice for aspiring musicians? Always keep it real. Be yourself. Be your own person in the songs you sing, and stay true to your roots in music. It’s not about the “views”, the “likes” or the “honours” you get. It’s all about the music and passion.

PHOTOS CLARENCE LIEW, LONG FEI/T2 PICTURES

How did you get started in music? I started out playing guitar for my mates in secondary school. I only found my voice when I had to replace a vocalist in a school event at the last minute. I’ve recently started writing my own songs and I plan to release a single by the end of the year.

YOUNG TALENT — SPF

FROM PLAYER TO COACH SGT (NS) Haikal Eiman is an advocate of striking a balance – on and off the hockey pitch

Sports and studies go hand in hand for SGT (NS) Haikal Eiman, a top hockey player who pays it forward by coaching budding sports talents. Frontline catches up with this hardworking NSman who was recently honoured with the prestigious Goh Chok Tong (Mendaki) Youth Promise Award. What did you do in the SPF? I was an Assistant Trainer at the Key Installations Unit (KINS). How did you get started in hockey? I came from a family of sepak takraw players. My grandfather was a sepak takraw coach and my uncle was a national player, but I eventually took up hockey at the age of 17, when I was in Ngee Ann Polytechnic. I made it to the national team when I was 18, and then I was the captain of the Singapore junior men’s hockey team. The position I am playing for the Police Premier Team is centrehalf (centre-midfielder). How did you become so good in what you do? I attribute my success in hockey to my supportive family, committed teammates and inspiring coaches. It is the effort of many that has brought me to where I am today, and for this I am truly grateful.

SGT (NS) HAIKAL EIMAN SUPA’AT Age 24 Appointment Assistant Trainer, Key Installations Unit (KINS), SPF Specialties Hockey, sepak takraw Achievements • Captain of Singapore Under-21 national men’s hockey team, 2008–2009 • Assistant coach of Singapore Under-16 national women’s hockey team, 2011 • Recipient of the Goh Chok Tong (Mendaki) Youth Promise Award in Sports 2012 – for being a role model for the Malay community to excel in non-academic areas

What’s next in your hockey career? Having received so much, I am pleased to share my experience and skills with younger players. I am currently the head hockey coach for Innova Junior College and Bukit Panjang Government High School, and co-head coach of the Police Under-21 men’s hockey team. While I contribute as a coach, I also carry out my duties as a member of the Police Premier Team. We plan to stay together as a team and we aspire to be the best team in Singapore. I’m also currently pursuing a sports science degree in Nanyang Technological University. Any advice for aspiring hockey players? Do not let success go to your head, and do not let failure go to your heart. I have always been an advocate of a balanced lifestyle. While hockey is my passion, my priority is on my studies. Hence I would advise all aspiring players to strive for both academic and sporting excellence. This will enable you to have a career in sports that will last long after your time as a competitive player.

Men In Colour New hues for a hot look in 2013!

Although traffic cone colours may be all the rage on runways, most men would want to steer clear of controversial colour choices in their everyday wardrobe. Instead of bright primary hues like yellow, blue, green and red, try subtle accents in the form of rusty or subdued colours to add interest to basics, such as a polo shirt or a pair of chinos.

HE SAYS, SHE SAYS

How to Agree to Disagree Fix these issues with your partner today!

Squabbles, quarrels, fights – these are part of every relationship. But there are some topics that always seem to come up, no matter how hard you try to avoid them. Here are some distressing issues and how you can resolve them – before it’s too late!

Money really is the root of all evil Whether it’s about her spending habits that get on your nerve, or about your frugal ways that’s thwarting her plans of a luxurious beach vacation with you, money’s probably one of the biggest things couples fight about.

“You don’t spend any time with me!” Our society is so fast-paced that it’s easy to lose track of time. We forget our priorities and neglect slowly creeps into the picture. Before you know it, you’re seeing less and less of your other half.

Be honest about each other’s financial situation. It’s about being realistic and spending within your means. Also, accept that one of you will always be the spender and the other a saver, so work together to analyse the situation and come up with a long-term plan that’ll work.

Decide how often you both wish to see each other, and make sure you’re on the same page. To some, meeting every day is the best, and to others, once a week may prove to be a challenge. Look at each other’s schedule and see what’s possible.

Fidelity, oh fidelity It’s all about trust and honesty. Unfortunately, they come as easily as they go. All it can take is one glance at who exactly you’re texting in the theatre and she may very well jump to conclusions and begin to question your loyalty.

Understand that you can’t change or control someone’s past. The best thing you can do is keep an open mind. Communicate with each other and be as honest as possible. You’ll both understand each other better, and bridging the communication gap will slowly and surely build trust.

WORDS SAMANTHA DAVID

Three rules: be consistent, do what you say you will do, and do not lie. There should be no reason for you to doubt each other – it’s as simple as that.

The ghosts of your past The notorious alter ego you once had, the habits that nearly broke you, and yes, your ex – these are all issues that often resurface during fights, especially if either one of you is insecure.

A Timely Reminder Home Team volunteers visit the ISD Heritage Centre

S

ecurity threats are real. Never take racial and religious harmony for granted. Peace does not come easy. These were the key messages for Home Team volunteers who visited the Internal Security Department (ISD) Heritage Centre on 7 July. Organised by the Home Team Volunteer Network (HTVN) as part of the “Walking with the Home Team” series, the visit offered insight into Singapore’s security history and the ISD’s role in countering security threats. Joining the visit were Associate Professor Ho Peng Kee, Chairman of HTVN, and Mr Kong Mun Kwong, a member of the HTVN Steering Committee. Opened in 2002, the ISD Heritage Centre traces Singapore’s security struggles from the colonial era to the present day. Key events include the Maria Hertogh riots of the 1950s, the racial

28

riots in 1964 and 1969, and the threat posed by the Jemaah Islamiyah network. Espionage and other dangers remain even after communism ceased to be a threat. With the prevalence of social media, it is now more easy than ever to fan the flames of racial and religious hatred in cyberspace. The artefacts on display, which include items seized from terrorists, further underscored the need to be vigilant at all times. As part of its community engagement programme, the centre has reached out to civil servants, grassroots leaders, religious leaders, security partners, teachers and students. The visit was followed by a dialogue session with A/P Ho Peng Kee to solicit feedback from Home Team volunteers.

HOMEGROWN HEROES The Home Team honours ten NSmen at this year’s HTNS Awards

Back row (L-R): SGT (NS) Yahya Bin Abdul Razak; SSSGT (NS) Irwan Bin Abdul Rahman; SUPT (NS) Wong Soon Yang; MAJ (NS) Dennis Gay Keng Hian; MAJ (NS) Teo Yik Tee Jerry; WO2 (NS) Mohd Fitri Bin Mohd Jamil; SSGT (NS) Jimmy Woon Siew Loong. Front row (L-R): LTC (NS) Jonathan Joseph Tan; Mr Eric Yap, Commissioner SCDF; Mr Masagos Zulkifli, Senior Minister of State for Home Affairs and Foreign Affairs; Mr Teo Chee Hean, Deputy Prime Minister and Coordinating Minister for National Security and Minister for Home Affairs; Mr Ng Joo Hee, Commissioner of Police; DAC (NS) Charles Ng Kok Wee; SUPT (NS) Chua Song Heng.

I

t takes a special kind of dedication to go above and beyond the call of duty as NSmen. Since 2007, the Home Team acknowledges five SPF and five SCDF NSmen annually for their outstanding contribution and achievements towards NS. This year’s winners range from 34 to 49 years of age, and four of them have served more than 15 ICTs. At the presentation ceremony held on 26 September at Concorde Hotel, these ten

homegrown heroes received their award from Mr Teo Chee Hean, Deputy Prime Minister and Coordinating Minister for National Security and Minister for Home Affairs. In recognition of the part their families have played in supporting their NS duties, their spouses also received a token of appreciation. Frontline salutes these ten true-blue sons of Singapore who have done their part to keep us safe.

SPF DAC (NS) Charles Ng Kok Wee, 49 • Chief Financial Officer of Club 21 Pte Ltd • NS Commander, Ang Mo Kio Police Division • Role: To plan and manage PNSmen to meet the operational needs of the SPF • ICTs served: 24 NS has taught me to lead with compassion, and to be flexible to adapt to changing scenarios. These qualities certainly apply to my job as CFO of a luxury fashion retailer. My wife and son both fully support my commitment to NS. In fact, they often tease me that this is my second full-time job!

30

SCDF LTC (NS) Jonathan Joseph Tan, 41 • Chief Operating Officer and Director of AsiaMedic Limited • Battalion Commander, 11(A) Rescue Battalion, 1st CD Division • Role: To command and control a rescue battalion • ICTs served: 17 There’s a saying that there are no bad soldiers, only bad generals. This is something I believe in. As a leader I am only as good as my men, and I’ve learnt a lot from them. Going through a crisis situation together has helped me see how people perform, and that’s how you know you can count on them.

Home Team NSmen of the Year 2012

SPF SUPT (NS) Chua Song Heng, 49 • Director at Philips Electronics (S) Pte Ltd • NS Commander, Bedok Police Division • Role: To lead and improve the training of PNSmen • ICTs served: 27 My years as an OC Multi Task Group have taught me the importance of the big picture, and how even small parts of the puzzle are important in the overall scheme of things. My men have taught me many valuable lessons about leadership, motivation and teamwork. I’ve also learnt you have to be sincere in dealing with people. It’s taught me to speak my mind, even if the truth hurts.

SCDF MAJ (NS) Teo Yik Tee Jerry, 38 • Teacher at Victoria Junior College • Battalion Commander, 21(A) Rescue Battalion, 2nd CD Division and Honorary Aide-de-Camp to the President of Singapore • Role: To command and control a rescue battalion • ICTs served: 8 Being an ex-regular, I have many good friends who are excolleagues, and I’ve made many new NSmen friends as we serve ICT together. This friendship is a great motivator for me to do my part in National Service, where I get to interact with people from all walks of life, and this is a real eye-opener for me.

SUPT (NS) Wong Soon Yang, 47 • Deputy Director (Management Accounting & Budgeting) at Housing Development Board • NS Deputy Commander, Tanglin Police Division • Role: To manage the deployment of PNSmen in security operations • ICTs served: 22

MAJ (NS) Dennis Gay Keng Hian, 40 • Account Director at Alcatel-Lucent Singapore Pte Ltd • Company Commander, 304(A) MRT Shelter Company (Serangoon) • Role: To command and control a MRT shelter company • ICTs served: 8

Working together with police officers in the regular and volunteer forces makes my work as an NSman even more meaningful. Dealing with officers both within and outside of the SPF, as well as members of the public, have helped me to handle situations at my workplace in a professional manner.

My motivation came from knowing the importance of MRT shelters for our citizens, even though war may not be imminent. Being a Company Commander has given me a platform to hone my leadership skills. It also gives my employer the confidence that I am independent and resourceful in handling any situation.

SSSGT (NS) Irwan Bin Abdul Rahman, 40 • Head of Forensics and Special Projects at RISQ Worldwide (S) Pte Ltd • NS OC Training, Bedok Police Division • Role: To develop and manage PNSmen training matters • ICTs served: 7

WO2 (NS) Mohd Fitri Bin Mohd Jamil, 34 • Senior Process Technician at IBRIS Bio-Fuels Pte Ltd • Company Sergeant Major, 41(A) Rescue Battalion, 4th CD Division • Role: To take charge of discipline and welfare matters in the rescue battalion • ICTs served: 4

The moment a PNSman wears his blue uniform, he is no different from his regular counterparts, and performs the same function in law enforcement. I would like to witness my children don their uniforms as they serve the nation I adore. It would be one of the proudest moments a father could have.

I’d like to dedicate this award to my fellow NSmen. I am happy my unit won Best Rescue Battalion in WY 09/10 and WY 11/12. It takes patience to manage and motivate 300 men. I am thankful to be able to serve my country, as NS has made me a more confident and responsible person.

SGT (NS) Yahya Bin Abdul Razak, 37 • Head of Madrasah Policy and Planning at Islamic Religious Council of Singapore (MUIS) • OC Service and Support, Clementi Police Division • Role: To support logistical needs for deployment of PNSmen • ICTs served: 9

SSGT (NS) Jimmy Woon Siew Loong, 34 • Workplace Safety and Health Officer at Sones Consultancy & Services LLP • Company Sergeant Major, 31(A) Rescue Battalion, 3rd CD Division • Role: To take charge of discipline and welfare matters in the rescue battalion • ICTs served: 3

Unity in diversity – that’s how I feel whenever my men return to serve their ICT.  There is always something to learn from one another as we come from different backgrounds. My NS experience has sharpened my planning and thinking skills, and I am able to apply these skills in my career.

My NS experience has taught me to handle hardship and exigencies with a cool head and clear mind. These traits help me greatly as I am able to apply them in my career. I’d also like to thank my wife for her understanding, especially during last year’s ICT when we were busy planning for our wedding.

HomeTeamNS-New Balance REAL Run 2012 Grit, gravel and glory at Singapore’s only multi-terrain race

O

n 21 October, 6,500 runners tested their limits in a unique race on road, gravel, sand and taxiway. Held annually since 1996, the REAL Run featured a challenging 21km and 10km route around the Changi Exhibition Centre. This year’s race included runners who hail from Kenya, Venezuela and New Zealand, and is truly a race for the young and old – the youngest runner was 10 and the oldest was 82. The Men’s Open champion was Bernard Mwendia Muthoni from Kenya, who finished the 21km run in just over an hour. The HomeTeamNS Individual 10km winner was Madankumar Balakrishnan, who also won the category in 2010 and 2011. This year Madan crossed the finishing line in 36 minutes 23 seconds, shaving an impressive 34 seconds off his previous record in 2011. Visit www.realrun.sg/results.html for the full list of winners.

Power is Nothing Without Control Top tyre tips from Pirelli Tyre Singapore

Keeping your car’s tyres in top condition makes for a safe and smooth drive. Here are three simple tips from Pirelli Tyre Singapore! 1. Don’t bend and brake Do you remember your driving instructor telling you not to brake on bends? Well, in practice, many drivers come into bends with their foot on the brake, releasing the pedal when they reach the centre of the bend. This strains your tyres in two ways. First, the tyres have to resist the force imposed by the brakes. Second, braking while the wheels are on an angle creates friction between road and tyres, wearing them out faster than a straight trajectory would. So brake sooner with the wheels straight when you approach the bend. 2. Don’t let it slide Hydroplaning happens when the tyre grooves are unable to expel water and your car starts to slide – a very real risk in rainy Singapore. Resist the urge to brake, as the tyres have no grip on the road, and you risk having your car swerve suddenly once the tyres grip again. Instead, keep a firm grip on the steering wheel to prepare for “re-gripping” and maintain your intended steering direction. Also, your engine revs increase rapidly when the car starts floating, so take your foot gradually off the accelerator to counter that. 3. Replace the right tyres Here’s something few people know. If you need to replace just two worn-out tyres, most garages will place them at the front, because you’ll feel the difference right away. However, you’ll also run the risk of hydroplaning and oversteering on wet surfaces – that’s when water builds up between the tyres and the road, making them lose their grip altogether. So put your new pair of tyres at the rear!

Win Pirelli merchandise!

For a chance to win an umbrella, podium cap and keychain from Pirelli, just answer this question: If you had to replace just two tyres, would you place them at the front or the rear? Send your answer to contests@hometeamns.sg by 20 November and you could be one of our five lucky winners!
