Welcome HTS Families,

For more than 40 years, HTS has been focused on a singular pursuit to feed the curiosity of our children as they reach for the future Our collective shared experience teaches us that your children will gain the most benefit from the halls of our school by participating in all that HTS has to offer, including a rich student life program that is available to them in varied forms

On behalf of the entire Board of Governors, for both our returning and new students, and their entire families, it is my privilege to welcome you to something we all cherish. Whether this is your child’s first year at HTS or their final one, every moment at HTS will be filled with opportunities

Building Security

To keep our community safe, the exterior doors are locked at all times, and cameras are installed on the building’s exterior and interior hallways

All students in Grades 5 to 12 are required to carry their security key card at all times The security key card gives students access from 8:00am until 5:30pm on regular school days. Students cannot access the school after 5:30pm on weekdays or on weekends unless authorized for a school event or with a staff member. Key cards are also used as library cards

The key cards are part of our wider security system They identify which entrance students have used and log entry times In addition, the cameras throughout the school record who is coming and going at all times.

Visitors to the School

A visitor log recording any visitors and itinerant staff is maintained at reception, where all visitors must check in

All visitors are asked to report who they are meeting to the Front Office Coordinator, sign in and wear a visitor's badge At the end of the visit, the visitor must return the visitor's badge to the Front Office, and the staff member responsible for the guest must sign them out Students have been told not to open the door to visitors

Board of Governors

A Board holds the school “in trust ” It stewards and safeguards the school for the next generation while supporting the Head of School in leading the school today.

The Board of Governors acts as one body, makes decisions with great care and is the school's final authority. The Head of School is the only employee of the Board of Governors. Together, they are dedicated to advancing HTS as a leader in education

HTS Parent Association

The HTS Parent Association is a volunteer organization and a valued part of the HTS community. All HTS parents are members of the Parent Association, and are welcome and encouraged volunteer in many activities throughout the year.

If you'd like to hear more about the PA, please contact parentassociation@hts.on.ca

Volunteers

We invite you to participate by volunteering throughout the year for various events and initiatives

Everyone is also welcome to sign up for our PA Champions program for “ supervolunteers”. Attend educational sessions and social gatherings and learn more about Parent Association efforts!

Volunteers must be 18 years or older and support in a classroom, a school program or an event and generally fall into two categories:

Level 1: Volunteers who do not have regular or direct one-on-one contact with students

Level 2: Volunteers who are involved in overnight field excursions, coaching, or circumstances that may involve regular and/or direct contact with students that the Head of School deems to have limited teacher supervision parameters (e.g. one-on-one).

Students in Grade K-12 are issued a Google Workspace account (Google for Education), including Gmail, Google Drive, Google Calendar and Google Classroom.

Google Classroom and Toddle:

Google Classroom (Grades 6-12) and Toddle (Grades K-5) are used at HTS to provide students with access to their learning. In these programs, students can send their teachers messages, submit work and receive feedback from teachers

WHEN

Safe Arrival and Dismissal

Lower School students should enter and exit through the Lower School doors Attendance is taken at 8:15am.

Lower School students can be picked up by a parent/guardian/sibling in their homeroom at the end of the day.

Students who are not picked up promptly will attend Aftercare in the Dining Hall. Our grade 6-8 students can be dropped off on campus and walk into the school on their own

Upon arrival, students are expected to go directly into their homeroom unless they are attending a practice or rehearsal.

Senior school students are expected to be in homeroom by 8:30am for attendance and are not restricted from leaving the school grounds at the end of the day

Parents are required to inform the school if a student will be absent or late. Notification is requested as early as possible

WHAT IF!

School Campus Closure

In the case of inclement weather, or for any school closure, our Head of School will make the decision to close the school and is generally made between 6:00 am and 6:30am and parents will be notified.

All students will learn remotely through Google Meet on days when the campus is closed due to inclement weather.

Each division will follow a special schedule with shortened days. Students can access their remote learning classes through their Google Calendar; attendance will be taken on these days

The decision to close the school in the event of inclement weather is generally made between 6:00am and 6:30am Once the decision to close has been made, the following steps are taken to ensure that our parents are informed as quickly as possible:

A News Alert will be immediately placed on the HTS website. 1.

Parents will receive an automated phone call and email from HTS, with a message indicating that the school is closed 2 Notifications will be posted on the HTS Facebook page and Twitter feed. Ms Helen Pereira-Raso will also post on her Twitter feed

3. Alerts will be shared on the following radio stations: CFRB, CBC and CHUM. 4.

Parents may call the school at 905-737-1114 ext 401 to hear an automated message if the school is opened or closed

When there is a HTS community event scheduled for the evening on the day of a school closure, the weather is monitored and all aspects of the event logistics are taken into account before deciding to go ahead with the event or to cancel it An email will be sent no later than 3:00pm with the decision regarding that evening's event

WHAT IF!

Prevalent Medical Condition

The Prevalent Medical Conditions (“PMC’s”) covered by this Policy are asthma, diabetes, and/or epilepsy, and/or students who are at risk for anaphylaxis. These medical conditions have the potential to result in a medical incident requiring an immediate response and monitoring or a life-threatening medical emergency

A Plan of Care will be co-created, reviewed, and/or updated by the parent(s), digitally collected, and housed in a secure location.

This information will be shared with the appropriate and designated staff, and the student (as appropriate), during the first thirty school days of every school year and, as appropriate, during the school year (e g , when a student has been diagnosed with a prevalent medical condition).
