Design For Health Care

15-20% Pregnant women BMI>30

Background research Eating and Pregnancy Overweight In the UK, more than half the women of reproductive age are overweight or obese. Around 15-20% of pregnant women are now in this category. Excessive weight gain during pregnancy is associated with a number of serious health problems. Other than weight control ,a balanced nutrient intake is also critical.

Eating healthily Pregnant women should be offered referral to a dietitian or other health professional for personalised advice on healthy eating and how to be physically active during their pregnancy. Many pregnant women are not fully aware of their health conditions. Many pregnant women become over anxious about the food they should eat. Pregnant women would like to be in control of their diet. Many pregnancy complications are avoidable with appropriate dieting, but dieting has been causing unnecessary stress in women.

Feelings and emotions Pregnant women may feel premenstrual, overly emotional, or out of sorts. They worried about their babies and need more support from their partners.

I am falling in love with my son everyday as I watch him grow and change. I feel proud that I am the reason for that .My relationship with him can’t be compared to his father’s.I spent 10 months more time with Jabez when he was inside of me. We communicated before he was born. When he felt ,I felt

I found it really annoying when for example I was at work last week and everyone got coffees .I did get a decaf , but immediately everyone said “well I hope that’s decaf”,and I Found that really irritating.

I would take a picture of her everyday and send it to my mother while she was at work. To see her grow into this little person is amazing.

Wendy Lee Age 22 3 months pregnant

whatever I use it needs to be simple and easily hand held. I have my daughter in one hand, and I ‘m pushing the grocery cart in the other. It would be nice to be hands free but most important is ease of use and intuitive interface.

Vina Otocki Age27 12week pregnant

Yuka Lee Has a 3 years old boy

Fiona Morris Age 24 8 months pregnant

I ‘ve already got one child so basically mu most valuable asset is time .I really just need to know what I should eat and when. It would be great if I could tell something what I have in my fridge and it could help me make the right meal with what I have available.

I work in OB/GYN so my doctors and bosses see me all the time .Having 24/7 access to doctors really makes it easier. Because of my job ,I have very good resources and intelligent physicals that I can always easily see any day that I want. If I didn’t have that I think I would be a bit more freaked out.

Jessica Owens Age 26 7months pregnant

When I was pregnant with my first child I was 17.I was scared and had a lot of peer pressure to be a certain way. Diet was the last thing on my mind and even now. It is so difficult to eat healthily when on a budget.

Aila Sheikh Age 24 6 months pregnant As a mother-tobe, I am feeling anxious and nervous. Being a first-time mom,I don’t have a clue as to what to expect so it is quite nerve wracking.

The 1st trimester is often the most difficult time. Women have the highest risk of miscarriage and so they sometimes feel that they cannot talk to anyone about their pregnancy .But because it’s beginning, they do not have any feedback about what’s going on inside, and need reassurance.

Women feel guilty to even have a bag of crisps when they ‘re pregnant. Which is silly because you can still enjoy such snacks in moderation when you’re pregnant.

We make an appointment when they are 8 weeks pregnant. At that point we take the BMI by height and way .If at that point they are at a BMI of 30, we will see that in itself is a huge risk factor.

When women become pregnant they suddenly have this massive health conscious light bulb moment .They’re more interested in their dieting and eating than any other time .There is so much information out there that is confusing and contradictory.

Concept NÜ is an interactive diet companion designed to encourage pregnant women to eat healthily. The baby’s growth and the effects of foods are reflected through a lively and friendly interface. By using BMI, current stage in pregnancy and pre-existing health conditions of the Mother, NÜ is able to intelligently create weekly shopping lists tailored to her specific nutritional needs. Mothers can use the handheld device to scan grocery items to learn their nutritional values as well as the amount they should consume per meal weekly. Furthermore, the integrated system allows NÜ to give smart reminders and snack suggestions based off of the user’s eating history. Built into the back of the handset is a detachable RFID sensor which turns a smartphone into a second device, allowing the user’s partner, parents or friends to shop for her. There is also an online NÜ community where women can share and discover meal tips and experiences.

Design For Chinese Social Enterprise

Becoming a serious social problem

A whole generation of left-behind children now exists in China. Researchers estimate that at least 58 million — nearly a quarter of the nation's children and almost a third of its rural children — are growing up without one or both parents, because they have invariably migrated in search of work. More than half of the children were abandoned by both parents.

BACKGROUND RESEARCH Chinese Rural Left-behind Children What are left-behind children? The children of migrant workers have come to constitute a new special social group in China. Labelled as left-behind children, they are abandoned by their parents who have to leave to work in urban areas.

WHAT BAMBOOK is an interactive outdoor learning system designed for Chinese left-behind children in rural areas. The system consists of a specifically designed camera, bamboo outdoor books, teaching and learning tool-kits, and a network. Volunteer teachers bring together classes of children to give fun experiences that help them engage in local culture and knowledge. After receiving the puzzles, including daily life, history and art, agriculture production, natural creatures, the social problems in their local communities, and questions given by teachers, children are encouraged to explore and discover the answers hidden in bamboo tubes hung in the village .All the bamboo tube textbooks will be hung beside the corresponding articles to connect real objectives. With children's unlimited creativities, they can use the new designed camera to record their thoughts and questions in their journey of resolving problems. The aim is to enable children to further understand the values of their local culture and improve their enthusiasm for learning in BAMBOOK local campus, which restores and integrates knowledge into real environment. In this system, left-behind children also play the role of contributors researching local cultures. It is a fantastic process to improve their sense of self-cognition and to get social-recognition.

The Bambook Camera Design The Bambook Camera is specially designed for sharing among children. Unlike traditional pen and paper, the camera can record instantaneously. It is the most important tool in the toolkit when children are participating in activities. Children can use it to record what they think about quickly and conveniently. Its appearance and function are specially designed for children’s use, habits and needs.

Children use their RFID card to turn on the camera. The RFID reader in the camera reads children’s information and identifies them.

The camera’s handle is designed according to bamboo’s natural cambered surface, so that children can hold it conveniently and take high quality photographs.

Children can use the turn-on, turn-off, shoot, and review photos functions easily.

The battery box is designed at the bottom of the camera and can only be opened with a particular key given to the teachers. This design can ensure the safety of fragile and easy-to-lose components, such as the camera’s battery, SD card.

Rhododendrons are often valued in landscaping for their structure, size, flowers, and the fact that many of them are evergreen. Azaleas are frequently used around foundations and occasionally as hedges, and many larger-leafed rhododendrons lend themselves well to more informal plantings and woodland gardens, or as specimen plants. In some areas, larger rhododendrons can be pruned to encourage more tree-like form.

Children can make their own bamboo tube books. Through their unlimited creativity, children will uncover many new problems during the learning process. After they have collected the answers the needed, they can make their own new bamboo tube books, and hang them in the same place where the questions appear, in this way sharing the knowledge they have gained. BAMBOOK NETWORK Emotional connection BAMBOOK NETWORK is connected to children in care and their distant parents. Due to rural left-behind children, parents have been separated from their children for quite a long time. As well as the lack of a common life experience, children and their parents may lack a common language with each other. Additionally, parents will also miss a lot of important moments during the time that their children grow up. The BAMBOOK NETWORK offers an effective channel for parents and children to learn more about each other's lives and experiences. By looking at their children's pictures and teachers' comments on the web pages, parents can have a better understanding of their children's hobbies and special skills, etc.

Express themselves Children can display their talent and weekly activities through the BAMBOOK NETWORK, such as producing BAMBOO tube BOOKS for the village, taking pictures to show their contribution to the village, to avoid duplication of show their handiwork, calligraphy, paintings, homework and excellent examination papers, etc.

Social Contributions Social enthusiasts can choose to donate a BAMBOOK camera or BAMBOO TUBE to rural areas. Answer questions from children, send postcards containing children's photos, take part in voluntary activities.

Their parents guided them when the twins were using the camera; the children were very collaborative.

The position that the boy wanted to design for the shutter is just the position where I want to put it.

They played with my camera model for almost half an hour.

The boy was full of remorse, because he accidently broke my camera model.

Both children liked the design very much and neither wanted to give up.

The children liked the camera’s handle made from this material very much.

These kids used some cameras to form different modelling blocks.

Deisgn for Sustainbility This system is helpful for reducing left-behind children’s loneliness and improving their self-cognition and social-recognition. It is also hoped that this system can help more Chinese people rediscover the value of rural civilisation, cultural inheritance and preservation.
