Week One

Reading: Zeara Polo, A. 2010. Between Ideas and Matters.

According to Zeara-Polo, the diagram does not play a representational role in the design process but provides an organisational and can have a performative quality depending on how it is deployed. Explain how Diagram is different from Signs and Symbols? (100 words Maximum)

The diagram doesn’t explicitly represent the fundamental geometric information required to analyse the building. It is a schematic representation of ideas for the formation and layout of the structure. It can represent the process which allows people to understand the structure’s progress. Therefore, it must be in touch with the surrounding spaces, as it has a relationship with each one. According to Zeara-Polo, the diagram can be used as a way to explore and describe these relationships, the uses of the design and its performance. In contrast, signs and symbols formally describe information to express concepts. For example, signs always represent a meaning, and their pattern can stimulate ideas. Symbols are used to describe a relationship between different factors, for instance, by dividing categories using icons. Both represent ideas to reinforce the concept’s importance. Overall, signs and symbols act formally to explore an idea in detail, whereas the diagram is less formal, as it lacks qualities that explain the detailed information, but it provides an excellent tool for progress.

Week Two

Reading: Hertzberger H. 2005. The in-between and The Habitable Space Between Things, from Lessons for Students in Architecture.

Herzberger discusses how design should not be extreme in its functionality. Use your precedent study to explain how the pavilion allows for an appropriation of use. (100 words Maximum)

Herzberger suggested design should be more flexible on the rule of space, not just focusing on its usage. Radix is crafted as a public open space, which allows people to interact with it. The initial goal of this design could be seen as that of a resting place, but it can also be used as a decoration on the street. Multiple entrances allow people to decide where to go. Moreover, the location of the radix has encouraged visitors to use this public area rationally. People can stay in the pavilion to observe the river or walk along its path. Furthermore, stairs are beside the radix, which means the area is not necessarily for rest.

Week Two Isometric

Radix: designed by Aries Mateus The docks of Arsenal Venice Biennale 2012 The pavilion is of contemporary design and is inspired by the arched walkway of the Arsenal galleries. The colour of the outer layer (dark brown with some decay) tends to be denser than that of the internal (brown gold), creating a unique feeling towards it. The dense brown colour establishes a connection to nature and provides a sense of order, which reinforces the idea of stability, stimulating the need to feel protected. Moreover, the outer layer’s metal is roughly built, showcasing lingering decay marks that create a feeling of friendless. The colour of the internal spaces are golden brown; this lighter brown shade generates a sense of warmth and stimulates the appetite. Furthermore, the interior metal panels have magnetic curve lines and are reflected by the sunlight. The change of appearance caused by the reflective panels in the internal areas encourages people to enter. The internal structure has separated into three sections balanced by three points. The interior spaces have been cut into spherical shapes, which create interesting spatial experiences. However, some parts of the internal structure have been deliberately designed to direct people’s pathways by adjustments in height.

Humans prefer to walk through sizeable open spaces that have additional interesting patterns which boost the attraction. Therefore, most people would want to use the red section as an entrance. The redarrow represents the direction, and the line indicates the pathway.
