WHY USER EXPERIENCE I am currently working at EcoAir, London. As a reliable marketing and e-commerce executive, I am interested in the process of building successful brands. I have experience in poster, catalogue, banner, e-blaster design and web design for marketing enquiries. I have knowledge of social media campaigns, user interfaces, HTML5, CSS, SEO and Google Analytics. Although I have lots of knowledge regarding branding design, I still feel I am lacking in the central knowledge to build a successful brand. I have come to realise that whether it be product design, web design, or even customer service, all are concerned with user experience. Without considering the users, it is almost impossible to provide a good product, accessible website, or reliable service to the customers. Before working on a project, we should consider who is the end user, what is the most important thing they care about, how will they use the service and even why they should choose my service. If we say design can change the world, this is only because it is a user-centred design. User-centred design is an iterative process where there should be an understanding of the user and their concerns as a starting point for all design and development. As a user experience student, I hope to learn not only the fundamentals around UX, but also contribute back to the knowledge base of user experience design strategies. This learning opportunity will prepare me to become a better marketing and design expert through user-centred thinking. I hope I can help my country to build worldwide brands through the delivery of excellent products and services in the future.

How to choose a dehumidifier?

INTRODUCTION: When designing the new shopping website for EcoAir, I felt that as a customer it's really hard to make a decision when there are so many types of dehumidifier. As a leading dehumidifier manufacturer in the UK market, we felt we needed to extend our product filter capabilties to help our customers make the right decision. A user-friendly website is the most important thing in building a good relationship with the customer when selling online.

LANDING PROBLEM

ENQUIRY

TOO MUCH INFORMATION • I have a humidity problem, I really need to buy a dehumidifier asap. • Why so many choices? I just want to buy a unit for my flat. • What's the difference between these units? • Which kind of unit will fit my home?

TOO MANY REQUIREMENTS • Environment: I have a flat with 3 rooms, which dehumidifier is right for this size? • Noise Level: I hope the unit will be not too noisy. • Mode Setting: Does this unit have a Sleep Mode function? • Power Consumption: I hope that running the unit in the house will not be too expensive. • Price: I hope the price is under £150 inc. VAT. • Colour: I prefer a white colour unit which fits with my house decoration. • Nano Silver filter sounds like a good feature.

ENQUIRY MINDMAP Posing as the customer, I worked through the process of selecting a dehumidifier. Where am I going to use my dehumidifier - how big is the space? Every dehumidifier has a different moisture removal capacity designed for spaces of different sizes. Is it energy efficienc and quiet enough that it will not disrupt me whilst sleeping? Which features do I need? A Nano Silver filter, timer, louvre, ioniser, child-lock, laundry mode or sleep mode? How expensive is it? Can I afford it on my budget? Keywords: Price, Capacity, Environment, Size of House, Noise Level, Special Features: Filter, Laundry Mode, Sleep Mode, Timer, Ioniser......

WHO : Customers with the intention of making a purchase WHY : Humidity problems at their home or place of work WHAT : Dehumidifier of varying capacity, price, efficiency and special features. WHEN : Impact of humidity problem is high, customer is looking for options to solve HOW : Gather requirements and identify units WHICH : Idenitfy the product which best matches the requirements

8

Dehumidifiers have different capacities. To choose a suitable one you should consider the size of the house. If the customer already knows which capacity they need, they can just select by range to find a product. A desiccant dehumidifier works well in a cold environments; however, a compressor dehumidifier works well in a warmer environments. Commercial-use dehumidifiers have different components. Some units have a splash-proof feature for usage in a bathroom. It is important to know where are customers going to use the dehumidifier so that we can make the right product recommendations to them. Price is always one of the most important things when buying a home appliance. Customers frequently are concened about the noise level of the unit as they may use it in the bedroom whilst sleeping. Power consumption affects the running cost of the unit, customers want a dehumidifier that is cheap to run. Different models have different special features. This filter can help identify a specific unit which may fit the customer's needs. NOTE: This is just the first step to build the product filter to help our customers choose a suitable dehumidifier which matches their needs. This project will be long-lived and will evolve until the customer no longer needs to call our sales team for assistance.

Thawer - Cutting Board

Solving the freeze/thaw problem in the kitchen INTRODUCTION: Living away from home, I started to learn how to cook by myself. I have always thought about how to cook more efficiently to avoid wasting ingredients. In Taiwan, we only go to the supermarket once a week. We are used to buying a great deal of meat which we freeze. However, we do encounter some problems when defrosting the meat directly from the freezer for use in cooking.

REFERENCE POINT: COOKING A BEEF CURRY PREPARE 1. Peel 2 carrots 2. Cut 3 onions into thin slices 3. Cut 1 potato and the 2 carrots diagonally 4. Take 250g of beef from the freezer and cut it into 1/2" cube

PAN FRY THE INGREDIENTS 1. Heat oil and fry the beef in the pan on both sides until brown 2. Heat oil in a heavy-bottomed pot and add the onion 3. After the onion, add the carrot and potato, pan frying for 10 min

WHO : People who freeze meat feel frustrated when trying to cut frozen meat immediately removed from the freezer. WHY : There are 2 common ways of thawing meat directly from the freezer. One is using the thawing mode of the microwave, the other way is removing the meat earlier, thawing it gradually at room temperature. Both approaches are ineffective ways to solve the cutting problem. WHAT : People care about the freshness of their meat and are keen to avoid waste. WHEN : When taking meat from the freezer, it is frozen and hard to cut. WHICH : The most important thing in cooking is efficient use of time & avoiding waste. HOW : Ensure the cook can work with only the part they need through cutting frozen meat.

26

SCENARIO : I want to cook with meat now, however the meat is still frozen. How can I cut it? I want the process of cutting frozen meat to be easier. When taking meat from the freezer, we often find it is extremely hard to cut. A microwave can only defrost the entire piece - this takes longer and also reduces the food's freshness.

BOIL THE CURRY SOUP

SERVE THE CURRY WITH RICE

1. In the heavy-bottomed pot, add some garlic, curry powder and water 2. Boil the curry soup for 5 minutes 3. Add the beef and wine and let the alcohol evaporate

1. Once the ingredients are all tender, reduce the heat 2. Serve the beef curry with rice 3. Enjoy your meal

1 MICROWAVE A microwave can only defrost the whole cut of meat, this is slow and also reduces the food's freshness.

2 SIT & WAIT

Leaving the meat to thaw at room temperature is slow and bacteria-prone.

28

Concept and Technology Cooks can choose only to defrost the part they want to cook. T.G.M (thermo-electric generating module) Thermoelectric generators are devices that convert heat directly into electrical energy using a phenomenon called the Seebeck effect. In short, T.G.M can be used to control temperature immediately, such as cooling and heating.

Tourist Map Design - Short Stay A short stay in Taichung Railway Station

INTRODUCTION: Taichung Railway Station is the gate to central Taiwan. This station is equipped with a bus terminal and is linked to the Taiwan Boulevard. Over 50 thousand passengers travel through Taichung Railway Station every day.

PERSONA • Name: Tina Lin • Career: College Student • Age: 21 years old • Personal Trait: Independant, brave • LifeStyle: Travel enthusiast, • Outfit: Simple, Tidy with a big backpack and camera

SCENARIO: I grew up in Taipei. I spent 4 days travelling around Taichung and the nearby town, I've had a really good time on this holiday. Today is my last day and I am waiting for my train back to Taipei. I still have 50 minutes before my train arrives, is there any tourist spot or souvenir shop close the railway station? Before saying goodbye to this lovely city, I would like to buy something for my parents in Taipei - they are waiting for me at home. I cannot wait to share how much I loved this city with them.

VALUE: There are several historic tourist attractions near to Taichung Railway Station. As designers, we would like to introduce this beautiful area to the tourists who come from far and wide. We noticed that a traveller may not have much time to stay around the station, their main purpose is to get on the train and travel to their next destination. With this in mind, myself and my team members designed a time zone tourist map for the traveller in the Taichung Railway Station. We hope this map will help tourists explore the beauty in this area.
