- POSITION STATEMENT -

It is a journey of exploration of stones and, at the same time, a reflection on the treatment of nature. Resource extraction is a necessary act for the development of the world, and today we are accustomed to deconstructing natural materials in the most economical way as industrialization has become very advanced.

Therefore, stones are usually processed into standard industrialized forms, but this also destroys the original texture of the stones.

Therefore, in the thesis, I want to explore a new way of controlling natural material like stone. How to realize the potential of such irregular natural products when confronted with them. It is an experiment to question how society uses natural materials nowadays and to find a way to handle them more respectfully.

- AGENDA Thoughts from the quarry The quarry is a common space brought by urban development. Human beings have an instinctive desire for this kind of space that shows the nature of nature in its nakedness. Modern quarries are a product of industrialization, and industrial means have deconstructed nature, allowing us to peel back the skin of nature and see the traces left by time in nature.

For such a site full of conflicts, I cannot help but think about the relationship between humans and nature, industry and nature. Industrialization allows us to control many things that are beyond human capabilities. However, this deconstruction of industrialization has also broken many traces left by nature. With what attitude should we approach such actions? In the case of quarries, we slice and crush stones, thus transforming an otherwise uncontrollable natural product into an industrial scale and a common form that can be better utilized. Are there other attitudes than the most economical one?

Reflections on the material "The sweat of production evaporates in the sweetness of consumption." Compared to the economic benefits of the industrial deconstruction of natural materials, we pay little attention to what happens to the source of raw materials. We seem accustomed to the idea that stone should be flaky, powdered, and lumpy. We don't really care or understand exactly how the stone was created, how it was mined, and what kind of shape it is. The correlation between the nature of the material and the end product has become blurred. We seem to have become accustomed to this industrialized language.

But it is the material itself that is the most attractive. Like the stone shown in the picture, each stone has its characteristics and is unique due to the limitations of mining technology, which is why the products of nature are so fascinating.

Can this uniqueness be demonstrated? We seem to have become accustomed to manipulating stones, but this may erase the irregularity of the form of the stone. Therefore, a new way of controlling the stone is necessary. How can we control the stone while preserving its characteristics? With the development of technology, is there a faster and gentler way to deal with such irregularities?

So it seems that this is an experiment using natural materials. What kind of attitude to nature? We have invented a lot of possibilities, including the common slicing and dicing of stones into common shapes. Alternatively, treat to stone by some more advanced means, allowing it to form a new way of building while ensuring a specific natural state. Alternatively, by cement and other adhesives to combine irregular stones. However, none of these is thinking about how to use the properties of stone.

I plan to create a new technique of building with stone.

A technique that respects and uses the properties of the stone. So this is an exploration of how to deal with nature, an experiment with new stone structures.

Attitude towards nature and experimentation If this is an experiment on using natural materials, then this experiment can treat a natural material with the most original and realistic attitude. Initially, I always hoped to have an ambitious goal to change many things. However, even studying the use of stone is a challenge. How to really understand the characteristics of a stone, how to use a stone rationally, how to preserve the traces of nature, how to reflect the relationship between nature and industrialization.

These are the questions that I plan to explore in this thesis.

The idea of respecting and understanding nature more is perhaps my initial idea this time.

- URGENCY -

First, urgency is a rather evanescent concept in this thesis.

It can be reflected from three perspectives: the perspective of treating nature, the perspective of construction, and the perspective of using.

Nature The industrialization has brought us many ways of deconstructing and reconstructing nature, yet these methods are all predicated on efficiency. So it is urgent to find a new attitude and approach to nature. Try to slow down and explore the possibilities that materials can offer us.

If we can think about this project through the lens of the earth, then time will not be defined. The materials have developed a unique texture due to natural changes over hundreds of millions of years. If we try to respect these unique textures, it is also a response to the landscape and nature. The urgency of this project is more about reflecting on the relationship between architecture and the earth.

We usually produce building materials through industrial processing while giving them artificial characteristics and timeliness. However, the relationship between architecture and nature is fragmented. If we can learn from nature and use the potential of natural materials to build, can we create a new language of architecture?

This effectively blurs the concept of time. Natural materials bring the temporality of geological change into architecture, bringing a natural temporality to the building itself.

Construction Architecture can always be connected to the topic of construction. Although I am exploring the relationship between architecture and nature, this is not to say that I am against industrialization or technological means. On the contrary, it is because of the development of technology that there are more possibilities to control natural materials, so this must be a modern solution. For construction, unlike traditional stone buildings, it should be a lighter and faster way to build.

This method may change the process and the process of construction. How to achieve a balance between nature and industrialization? What can be done to counteract the inconvenience and difficulty of building an object that is so irregular and uneven? This is the most fundamental question when dealing with natural materials. So these are the two extremes of the problem: to ensure that the material is in its most natural state and that the building process is convenient. So this expresses the tension in time as well. People only think about the possibilities of a new technology when it can be more convenient.

This is exploring a new possibility of stone building, so it may not cover all aspects of a space design. However, I still try to allow people to think more about possibilities of using stone as a construction material.

Usage Any building needs to be used for a certain period. However, this is not a major point of discussion in this thesis. It could be a temporary building or a house made of stone. I want to keep some openness and uncertainty in this regard.

- SITE AND SITE CONDITION The beginning of the research A quarry in my hometown was the beginning of this thesis.

The shock of nature motivated me to learn more about this quarry. So this quarry in Huizhou, Guangdong, provided the basis for my research. It is a quarry in progress, and like other quarries, the government has already planned for the future of this quarry. In this case, it includes the depth of mining, the extent of mining, the extent of blasting, etc. Therefore, to understand the material, one must also study many aspects, including the geology, the nature of the stone, how it is mined, etc.

Based on a site that I was more familiar with, I started my research.

Therefore, for the nature of this site, the process of change and the reasons for the change are the entry point to understanding this quarry. Therefore, I started my research on the geological formation and change of this site and made a series of geological drawings and drawings of the changes of the site with the available survey materials.

However, while people seem to control everything precisely, each stone shows different forms and textures. So when I went to the site and touched the stones, I felt they had a unique charm. How can they be fully utilized? It may come from my intuition of nature, so I put aside some big planning information and tried to understand the site visually and in detail.

Then I scanned the entire site with a drone and got a digital model. This helped me get a better understanding of the site.

The drone captured many angles that I couldn't see, which helped me reacquaint myself with the site. Furthermore, it recorded some information that was not visible on the drawings.

Moreover, at this point, I also realized that scanning is the process of reconstructing an irregular natural object.

With the help of this technique, it is possible to obtain information about the irregular site in constant change, and it is possible to get much information that the drawings cannot provide.

As a result of this scanning, I also made a nodal drawing of this quarry. The different texture from different mining techniques; the different sizes of stones from different mining techniques; the different orientations of the site and the different slopes from different mining techniques, etc. The scanning results allow an irregular site to be mapped and calculated.

This makes it possible to control an irregular site or an irregular skin.

At the same time, I have noticed that the stone, the main character in the quarry, seems to be forgotten more often than not. We seem to care more about the space in the quarry, the extraction of the stones. But there is a lack of attention to the stones themselves.

However, in the process of scanning the site, I also found that the stone actually represents the site better. It expresses the evolution of the site over hundreds of millions of years of natural development and has its own unique charm. And also, they take on a specific scale and shape because of the technology used to extract them. However, with the next series of industrial processing, the characteristics of these stones were erased.

What attitude should we take towards these stones? It seems to be a topic worth discussing. Based on this intuition, I chose some stones from the site and brought them back to Hong Kong. I think this is also the most meaningful step in my thesis. When the stones in the quarry leave the quarry, what can they be used for?

This is the story of the quarry site, where everything seems to have been created by an impulse for nature. And every step that follows is due to the love of the site, or intuition. But it is still unknown where these intuitions will lead.

The question that remains is, what can the stone bring? How can we control such an irregular object?

- METHODS AND STRUCTURE -

Based on previous experience with site scanning, scanning is an effective operation to control such an irregular object. Therefore, I scanned, recorded and numbered each of the 42 stones I brought back from the site. However, it was not easy to find a controlled reference system when dealing with such a natural object form.

How to find this entry point became the first problem to be solved.

Perhaps we can start by cutting a stone to get to know it better.

Moreover, when using the waterjet, how to position the stone and determine the position of the cut, which seems to have been trying to control a stone. With the help of the scanned file, the stone can be well supported by a 3D-printed base and placed at a suitable angle. When the stone can be fixed at a specific orientation, an irregular stone can begin to be controlled. The 3D-printed base at the bottom is the object used to control the stone.

Is there any other way to control the stone? Or what can be said of controlling a stone? Perhaps the first definition is that if a stone can be placed at a fixed orientation or if a specific direction can be found on an irregular stone, it can be considered to be in control of an irregular stone.

In the face of the industrialization of stones, this attempt, I think is an attempt to find some control points on the irregular surface according to the characteristics of the stone.
