INTRODUCTION

CONTENT

This portfolio illustrates my interests, skills and enthusiasm in a range of projects that I accomplished during my 4 years of architecture bachelor studies. The projects and complementary works cover various scales and fields in architecture, landscape and urban design. I see scale as one of the essences of architecture because it not only influences the concept of the project but also decide the position of architecture in physical and social context. Even a project like the narrow dwelling house can reach beyond the physical scale by serving the community and being adapted to the future use. And the change in scale can make huge difference to the status quo, as shown in the artist village project, in which I combine typical urban house

01 | BIRD FACTORY INTEGRATION OF PUBLIC EVENTS AND FACTORY

It is said by Zhuang Zi, a philosopher in ancient China, that" 方 生 方 死, 方 死 方 生 ", which means that death is not the opposite of life, so is architecture. The structural prototype of the industrial plant represents the past China’s industrial era, while nowadays the organization of civic activities and the new creative life will form an intersection with

the structural layout of the existing space, just like plants growing in the ruins. And this process is not only spatial, but also procedural. This project combine the tradition of raising birds in Xi'an, the experience of visiting a zoo and the culture industry, trying to provide a new perspective and thus arouse people's interest in the adaptability and vitality of tradition and existing space.

PORTFOLIO

This project puts forward a proposal to transform a 70-year-old towel factory in Xi'an, Shaanxi, from a towel factory abandoned in 2012 into a new place that can accommodate citizens' lives and ar tistic cr eation.

History, Tradition and Possibilities

Typical Chinese Bird Street Market

It's called 3511, which is located in Kunming Road in Xi'an, Shanxi Province. It's the largest towel manufacturers in the country with 70 years history from 1954 to 2012. On the other hand, the public life is related to the “bird culture” tidily. So, this project is about providing chances for the development of the culture, based on taking context, industrial identity and programming into consideration.

The length of the traditional bird market does not exceed 100 meters. It is not only for trading, but also includes about ten entertainment venues, including a bookstore, three theatres, and restaurants. Teahouse is an important space for people to rest and communicate. When outdoors, people will choose the space according to the different needs of training birds to call or fly.

The Transformation of Industrial Topology to Public Space

The Realm of Birds and Identification of the Factory

Death is not the opposite of life. One of the basic goals of the project is to realize the transformation from the spatial topology of the assembly line represented by the industrial plant to the public space. Platforms, stairs, and ramps are like vines growing in the ruins, heralding the awakening of the building.

This project adjusts some places for functions about birds by arranging boundaries, paths and points like observation tower and in-between garden. At the same time, chimney, tube, sheltered roof is translated into special forms in this project to remain the unique identification of the industrial site.

The Final Proposal

Through the organization of functions, paths, and boundaries, a new "pipeline" of "birds’ culture" is formed. People can understand and experience how the bird culture came into being.

The final model explores the relationship of different parts of the project in various aspects, including the combination of spatial and programming elements.

Edge The soft edge and the hard edge define the scope of activities. The new materials and the original walls define the temperament of the facade, and trees and shelves constitute the soft boundary.

Path The path not only meets the needs of walking the birds, but also creates chances for view to various activities, art making etc. It crosses various boundaries, leading from urban space to nature.

Space The formation of space is the result of boundaries and paths. While meeting the needs of specific people in a cer tain area, these spaces will become places where various people gather together.

People's perception of the place is determined by three parts, and they make the project an "ecosystem" that can accommodate people smoothly.

Work through, walk through & playing through Under the structural topology of the original factory, three types of people interested in birds are provided with spaces to walk, work, and play. The original age barrier is broken, and people of different ages can see how bird-related life and cultural industries are developed and make life more vivid.

Approach to Nature The project ends with a bird watching pavilion and a circle tea room built around the original industrial plant. The elderly in Xi'an are used to training birds' flying skills and calls in nature. Therefore, bird watching pavilions are set up according to the call range of different types of birds. People can follow the circular tea room to surround the central courtyard, and then follow the wooden deck up to the bird watching pavilion, where they can approach the sky, animals and nature at the end of the visit.

As the main material for traditional Chinese bird cages is bamboo, bamboo clad boards are used to cover the bird-watching tower to form an echo of the material. Fix the bamboo planks with wooden keels, and use painted steel pipes as the loadbearing structure of the bird watching tower

A

Most of the bird's teahouses in China are made of wood, so the circular teahouse uses wood as the roof structure, and the loadbearing columns use square steel tubes.

I take an analysis on the architectural connections and try to organize the space with my conclusion. In the final proposal, I combine these connections as well as some components with daily life, creating some flexible space in response to varying space use in the morning or night, alone or in a party, raising kids or when they grow up. Besides, it's a construction

project. I use wood structure in this project based on the context, and considering that Japan is a country prone to earthquakes, I add some supporting structure to get the overall framework more stable. Considerations has also been taken in the joint of the wood and the material used in order to avoid huge loss by the earthquake. In a result, these structures are exposed to the indoor space and the terrace to intensify the relationship between man and the house. I made physical models explaining my design about the structure .

PORFOLIO

In this project, I focused on a unique type of building in Japan, the urban narrow dwellings. Based on the considerations about economic and population density, they are usually located in a long and narrow site, with several layers to contain family activities. Therefore, what the relationship between different layers is influences the space inside largely.

Narrow Dwelling: a Typical House in Japan Due to the limited land area, many modern Japanese house is still based on a narrow site, just like those before. I am interested what space is like in those boxes and how they adapt to family life. There are three considerations taken at the beginning of design process.

Specific concern:

What interests me most about narrow dwellings is different forms of connection between vertical layers. Based on the study about those in typical town house designed by Japanese studio, it can be concluded that they can be sorted by the distance to the centre point of the plan. As the distance decreases, its form changes with the two connected vertical layers become separated. Combined with varying forms of each type, the space in these houses can be classified in both dimensions, horizontally and vertically.

Japanese tradition/ Context Sustainability

I made some models exploring the connections of spaces, with volume or floors. The final proposal aims to adjust different connections to different layers, so that the space will transform from public area (for the guests) to private rooms (with a meditation space on the top) naturally. Besides, I try to combine them with daily activities (the entrance, the bookshelf, etc.), to make it organized organically.

Just like a typical narrow dwelling, the width facing the street is about 6 meters with depth of 10 meters.

The terrace and balcony connect different layers as well as the room and the street.

Different connection forms are compatible with the transition from public areas to private areas.

The street facade and both sides of the facade adopt different strategies for installing windows to cope with privacy and visibility requirements.

These are the most private space of the house, a study room and a meditation room connected with a roof terrace. People need to climb a ladder or use spiral staircase here. People can choose two ways to reach their destination. Besides, these folded floors is flexible as there are storages hidden, and people can transform the bedroom to a home theatre quite easily. The spiral staircase is the start of family space. And on the second floor, it connects the indoor space and the terrace. The stair is joint with the twofloor-high bookshelves. On the ground floor it separates the dining and the living space, while on the first floor people can reads sitting on the stars. A few steps lead to the entrance, and the slope is approached to the green wall, with the lavatory and kitchen below the other side.

As flexibility is important to provide the house with the chance to stay for a long time, facing the needs change of the people, I adopt the approach of considering the space design in two ways. The first is how it is adapted to the needs in different time and different generations, and the second is the social use.

In order to make use of the limited space, I combine the space use with the 'connections'. They organize the space as well as the daily activities. And the size and separated measures are based on the ambiguity of Japanese room definition, so that people can change the function freely.

Installation Process

The structure of the house is mainly wood. Compared with traditional construction method of joining wood mainly through mortise and tenon, using steel components is a better choice for the part of the wood cut off at the joint is smaller. This method is called Safety Engineering Construction Method, which is used for enhancing earthquake resistance.

The artist settlements in Beijing are closely related to the villages. With the development of the city, urban villag es with higher residential density have lost suitable venues for artists' activities. This project provides a suitable venue for artists by redefining the identity of the space in this built environment.

The concept is simple: the space matches the three typical artist types, painter, poet, and musician. Public and informal space are g enerated by neg ative space. And since the project is located in a highdensity residential area, it maintains a square boundary. Different daylighting strategies a r e a p p l i e d f o r g a l l e r i e s, wo r k s h o p s, learning capsules and residential parts, etc.

PORTFOLIO

This project focuses on the phenomenon of the gathering of artists in Beijing. And it's aimed to provide an art centre accommodating both the private part of the artists and the public part for exhibition and other activities.


1980s After the cultural revolution, the non-academic artists held art exhibition asking for freedom to create artworks.

1990-1993 The artists chose to live and work in a village next to yuanmingyuan.

1993 The village closed due to the policy of removing all the artists here.

1993-2000 The artists moved to songzhuang or 798, an old facatory, to continue their creation.

now Songhzhuang and 798 become mature area while yuanmingyuan artist village disappeared. The Evolution of Artist Villages

The Lost Artistic Utopia: Yuanmingyuan Artist Village By 1990, the earliest 'artist village' emerged around Yuanmingyuan accommodating artists from around China. It became a haven for the artists for the special community combining the individuals and the collective activities properly. In 1993 it was shut down for some reasons. After that the built space in that area changed a lot, losing suitable atmosphere for forming an artist community.

The Transformation of Urban Fabric

Leaving the City: Artist Villages in Beijing

The original urban fabric of the artist village is like traditional hutong, with enclosed private rooms and street space for artists gathering. After the artist moved to other place, the fabric has changed immediately with more urban village 'blocks' are built. It seems the connected community has changed into isolated individual, where there is no identity for art to be born.

The artist communities in Beijing are almost located in its outskirts due to the low expenditure. This project tries to deal with the relationship between work-living community tradition and the context of villages (or urban villages).

The Identity Begins with Collective The research on activities in artist village shows that the space in artist community has different layers of 'personalities'. With individual life changing into collective activities, space for concert will differ a lot from the gallery. While in personal or family scale, the artists always allocate working and living part in the same 'box', which is much more stable and ‘characterless'.

4 A collective art space related to the fabric of the context

Digital and physical models are made to study the space. Physical models are aimed at texting the organization of the dwelling and public parts, as well as the typology of art space. And the digital models are made to modify the position and appearance of the 'vessels', and the allocation of different programmes.

Combined Scales Each unit of the 'vessels' is on the same scale with the context - the house buildings. And by containing them in a transparent box as an art centre, it poses an inviting gesture to the public and show the diversity of activities inside. Finally, this building combines the two scales.

This series of cross sections shows the relationship between dwelling and public area. Another issue is the light strategy. The two sides of the building can easily get enough natural light, while in the centre, the vessels are used as light well to provide natural light for surrounding space.

Storyline in One Day for Three Types of Artists

Identity of Space

The storyline diagram shows where and how these artists balance the private and public activities in these hybrid building. By connecting the making and exhibition process by both space and time, the system will be faster and more sustainable than traditional workshop mode.

The identity of the inner space is largely defined by those vessels. The openness of both sides of each vessel differs from each other which create diversity for both programmes and space.

This front of the building is a hybrid space combining the public and the 'outer' collective activities of the artist. The vessels with different shapes are the core issues that define the identity of the art space. And the negative space surrounding them become the place where informal study, temporary exhibition and speech, as well as reading happens.

FOYER The vertical vessels are supported by independent structures, with the circular beams linked to the main structures of the building. It has double skins made of metal material attached to the secondary keels.

REFLECT ON NATURE

The aim of this project is to provide a place for researchers to live, meet and research on a site located on the top of a tropical island.

In ter ms of str uctural detailing, the use o f G N C m a t e r i a l s a r e f o r t h e g r ow t h of plants on the façade, and the use of greenish cast glass beneath the massing provides an interesting texture, making the walls softly grow from inside at night.

I focus on the following issues: firstly, the connect between the volume and the nature. I combined the geographical for m of the hilltop with the building, to make it less introverted and become an inspiration for reflecting on the relationship between nature and man-made objects. Secondly, energy and environmental friendliness. As the site has typical tropical climates, with bright sunlight and abundant rain, I designed proposals for solar energy and water use that would allow the building to obtain the required energ y and domestic water from nature, and to use recycled water for irrigation of the roof and façade greening.

At the scale of the island, the volume is floating, creating a strong contrast to nature. At the scale of the building and the site, slicing elements are used to connect it to the ground and to divide the space below the volume into public and private part. Within the building, a stepping-up library attached to the shell and a central multifunctional hall form a strong community space, while gaps at office level provide varieties to the plan and roof.

Collages: Nature, Geometry and Activity The early collages shows that architecture can be between the people and nature. Like the land art, abstract geometry can be related to nature or geography. Maybe there is strong contrast, but people will think of nature through architecture.

growing program The proposed diagram identifies the volume with the site, which is beside the hilltop. There are two main features, a good view in 360 degrees, and a slicing direction from the valley to the side of the sea.

Identity: Link to Nature The existing buildings on the tropical island has a weak connection to the island although they have the intention to create it. The hotel has a semicircle plan to embrace the nature but turn out to be a huge fence. By dividing their features into introverted and extroverted sides, it shows why their 'identity' is messed and it can be shaped by redefine the relationship with nature

The model study focuses on the scale, geography and the size. As for scale, normally the building on the hilltop will be like a castle in M scale which is too introverted. Combined it with the terrain, the building and the site will create more activities and space.

The aim of model study is to figure out a suitable typology to balance the inner space and the site adaptation. A centralized space is helpful to provide a community for the researchers but will make it as an arena which prevents the volume from connecting to the environment. The slicing idea will create gaps to make it 'breath' to the nature.

The centralized space and the slicing concept are used to balance the interior space and the connection to the site. The slicing elements divide the space beneath the 'Superbowl' and expand to create activities for public and the researchers.

Environmentally Friendly Design I used passive energy saving strategy to create a harmony between the building and nature. The pond helps to cool the air which is important in a tropical island. The chimney effect and gardens can enhance the natural ventilation. The rainwater is collected by roof and vertical greening, and then it will be used for irrigation and daily use. The energy comes from two directions-the solar power and ground heat.

Structural Scheme The third floor is a reinforced truss-like level of a full floor height in order to bear the overhanging weight of the volume. The second floor is supported by truss structure deck. The bow-like structures make the force into multiple directions. The light-weighted structures define the space on the roof for gym deck and planting. And the columns are hidden in the line elements which are made of two-layer cast glass to create public space for activities.

BALANCE BETWEEN NATURE AND BUILDINGS Site: Beijing, China Programme: Urban Design Project Level: 4th year, 7th semester Type: Academic, Individual work Date Of Issue: November 2020 Supervisor: Lin Yuan

In this project, we focus on the funeral problem of a village in Loess Plateau, where due to the lack of water, people there learn to farm next to the cemetery. But soil erosion threatens arable land, cemeteries and the forests. We try to provide a place filled by the collective memory and nature. Through an optical device fixed in the column, the image of the decreased will be projected on a curtain. The ashes will be buried under the pillars and the plants will grow on them. It will become a venue full of greening, and help to slow down the soil erosion.

The district, like other areas in Beijing, is a place with mixture of contradictions - declining rivers and related industries, space demands of innovative companies, and broken urban fabric. My strategy is to use nature and rivers to 'heal' the broken land. The water system is introduced into the site, creating a clear tendency of direction of nature. Different types of vegetation and topography create a diversity of natural space. The direction and density control leads to the balance between individual lots and the whole site.

The local has a tradition of living in the cave as an introverted community, while recently it has attracted more tourists. This project tried to apply a network of nests in order to balance the original life and increasing demands. By hanging the 'nests', there will be interesting relationship between the private and public area, and the connections allow people to look at both sides - the central space and the sky out of the cave.

This is a joint teaching project with Pro. Weizheng Lin from University of Chicago. It aims to digitise the Zhihua Temple. My task here was to investigate the construction and scale patterns based on the point cloud data. After summarising the patterns, an idealised electronic model was made for further study.

PHOTOGRAPHY [The last desert] It's a photography project in my hometown, documenting an area beside construction site.

It's a wasteland in general, while I found it a magical place to feel the essence of space rather than think about it.

This project pays tribute to Josef Koudelka, a Magnum picture photographer whom I admire due to the eternal, divine trait of his work.
