72 hours in the San Juan Islands

Fall 2016

72 Hours in the San Juan Islands A few months ago, Rich and I were hoisting beers with Jonathan and Zach of Jamestown Revival, when on a whim we invited them to join us for a weekend up in the San Juan Islands. It was one of those less-than-sober ideas that usually never survives the cold light of day, but luckily they too shared the same whim. Then again, hey, you wanna ride motorcycles, shoot guns, and go fishing and sailing in one of the most picture-perfect places on earth isn’t exactly a tough sell, ya know? Once Jonathan and Zach were on board, the ideas started flowing, as they often do when you’re belly up to the bar. So we thought, what the hell, let’s turn this trip into our next catalog. We called up Huckberry Ambassadors Charles Post, an ecologist, and Meg Haywood Sullivan, a photographer, to round out the group, and before we knew it, our seaplane was touching down on the south side of Lopez Island — the third largest of the 128 islands that make up the San Juans and our basecamp for the long weekend.

If you followed along on Snapchat (@HuckberryCo), you may notice that not every moment made it in here (something, something indecent exposure laws). Still, the following pages capture the spirit of our 72(ish) hours in the most northwest point of the continental U.S. Well, at least in a what-you-tellyour-mom sort of way. Like a roaring fire, the following pages are best enjoyed under the influence. So settle into your favorite chair, pour a maple hot toddy or two (recipe’s on page 47), and enjoy. And if you’re so inclined to buy the ticket, and take the ride yourself — to steal a line from Mr. Hunter S. Thompson — head to Huckberry.com/San-Juan-Islands for our travel guide. See you out there,

Seattle San Juans to the

World-class sea kayaking amongst orca pods. Bald eagles stealing salmon from peregrine falcons. Sunsets that hang on the horizon for so long that, as King Lear said, you see feelingly. A hidden gem of the Pacific Northwest, the San Juan Islands are a mecca for outdoor adventure, and are only a 45 minute float plane trip from Seattle. Here Jonathan of Jamestown Revival takes in the view on the descent to Lopez Island – our home for the long weekend.

Salt Baked Trout The cool water of the Pacific Northwest is known to yield some of the most flavorful salt in the country. The recipe is simple – saltwater, sunshine, and time. In the San Juan Islands, you’ve got all three in spades, so it only makes sense that salt baked trout is one of our favorite local recipes.

Ingredients:

Directions:

1 Medium-size rainbow trout

Preheat oven to 500 degrees. Scale and clean fish and place lemon

4 Cups Kosher salt 15 Peppercorns 4 Dried bay leaves, crushed by hand 15 Coriander seeds 4 Small dried chiles, crushed by hand 8 Sprigs thyme 3 Lemon slices

slices and 3 sprigs of thyme in belly. Pour salt in bowl and slowly add water until it’s the texture of damp sand. Mix in remaining spices. Place fish in cast iron skillet and pack salt around it, leaving head and tail exposed. Bake for 10-15 minutes, let cool for 1 minute. Crack open salt pack and enjoy. See the recipe at: Huckberry.com/trout

Cast Iron Soul Thanks to the generosity of our buddy Tim Currie and his family, basecamp for the weekend was a stunning 100-acre property on Lopez Island with multiple cabins and a 747-hangar’s worth of toys. Here, Jonathan rips through Lopez’s backroads on a WWII-era British motorcycle which had — like one of Jamestown Revival’s signature songs — cast iron soul.

Slow-pez Of the four ferry-served islands — Lopez, Orcas, San Juan, and Shaw — Lopez is the flattest (making it the best island for cycling), friendliest (every driver waves when passing another car or cyclist), and most laid-back, hence its nickname “Slow-pez.” Here, Jonathan enjoys some downtime in a Flint and Tinder LS Marled Henley and Glerups.

Layer Up Located in the rain shadow of the Olympic Mountains, the San Juan Islands average 20 inches of rainfall a year, which is about half that of Seattle. Still, it’s cool and crisp year round — count on temperatures around 40°F in the winter and 70°F in the summer — so you’ll want to layer up. Start with the softest layer and work your way out to the most durable.

Gunkholing EDC Gunkholing: A boatman’s term we learned about on the trip (and often repeated) for cruising in sheltered waters and anchoring every night. The term may have originated among the shallow estuaries of the Chesapeake Bay, where the anchor sinks into the soft mud or “gunk” — thus it’s known as “gunkholing” to those who enjoy this low-key activity.

We’re calling it like that kid in The Sandlot — Jamestown Revival is going to be huge. Since their first album was named SingerSongwriter Album of the Year by iTunes in 2014, childhood friends Zach Chance and Jonathan Clay have appeared in Rolling Stone and the Wall Street Journal, and played sold out shows across the country, including Bonnaroo, South by Southwest, and Coachella. Still, having spent a long weekend with these two, it’s clear they’re only in the first inning of their music careers. While we had some downtime in the San Juans, we picked Zach and Jonathan’s brains about this and that. And by that, we mean Dairy Queen Blizzards, Mexican peanuts, scratch-offs, and their new album, The Education Of A Wandering Man, which drops on October 7th, and may or may not include a photo from this catalog.

Favorite recent purchases under $100 ZC: A pair of Grado SR80 head phones, a good head lamp for camping, and a Blizzard from Dairy Queen.

Dream artist to collaborate with... ZC: Hard to pin down just one, but Willie Nelson, John Prine, The Rolling Stones, and Kris Kristofferson to name a few.

Favorite podcast JC: Radiolab ZC: The Joe Rogan Experience. It’s all over the place.

Road trip essentials JC: A pocket knife, first and foremost. You never realize how much you’ll use it until you start keeping it with you every single day. We call it our uniform, and in the band of Jamestown Revival it’s a necessity. ZC: It’s like being knighted in the band. Once you get a pocket knife, you’re in.

Typical late night truck stop purchase JC: Mexican peanuts and scratch-off lottery tickets. ZC: And possibly some new attire. There’s some good state flair in roadside truck stops — you’ve got to keep an eye out for some new accoutrement.

Book you’ve gifted the most ZC: Education of A Wandering Man — the autobiography of author Louis L’Amour. It’s the book that inspired our album title.

Favorite beers or spirits (booze, not ghosts) ZC: Right now it’s Pearl Snap Pils by Austin Beer Works or a generous pour of Mezcal.

If you haven’t already, check out Jamestown Revival’s debut record, Utah, and keep an eye our for their new album, The Education Of A Wandering Man, which will be released on October 7th, 2016.
