A Cornish Adventure with Finisterre and Friends

‘‘ Turn the wheel all the way to the right! Seconds earlier, there was a flurry of unprintable words set off by the fact that our rental car was tilted nearly perpendicular, about a foot from the edge of a coastal cliff. Luckily, we emerged unscathed—three cheers for 4-wheel drive. But what was clear right from the outset was that our adventure in the unfamiliar land of Cornwall, England, 5000+ miles from home, would be anything but predictable. Luckily, long-time Huckberry pals and brand partners Finisterre (pg. 10) are Cornwall locals. We’ve always been curious about their mysterious home base. And in a land

with history that goes back further than history’s been recorded, it helps to have a friend. Together we criss-crossed the wild landscape of Southwest England. From Bronze Age ritual sites and abandoned 18th century tin mines (pg. 22) to cold-water surfing secret spots (pg. 40) and a trip on a 300 year-old clipper ship (pg. 7). We even redeemed our righthand driving skills with the vintage MG seen below. No better proving ground for our latest crop of autumn-ready gear. If you can get your hands on a strong pint of cider go ahead and grab that now. It’ll pair nicely with the pages to come. Cheers!

Tom Kay’s pager went off. That can happen anytime—deep in the night, at daybreak, smack in the middle of a quarterly sales report for his company Finisterre. A woman was out on a walk when the tide came and trapped her in the corner of one of Cornwall’s countless rocky coves. As a volunteer for the Royal National Lifeboat Institution, or RNLI, this is business as usual for Tom. The RNLI is like a scrappy, rag-tag equivalent to the Coast Guard. Each station is manned by a small volunteer crew from all walks of life—construction workers, accountants, and in Tom’s case, founders of legendary cold-water surf apparel brands. The most critical criteria is that members can drop what they’re doing and get to the lifeboat station within five minutes of the pager’s ring to embark on

whatever life-saving rescue mission the day calls for. Tom’s been a crew member for 15 years and now holds the title of Helmsman—a role that calls for organizing the crew and making rapid-fire decisions while in the throes of a rescue. Coincidentally, 15 years is just how long he’s been at the helm of Finisterre. First revered as a best-kept secret for cold-water surfers, over the years his brand has garnered a diehard global fanbase of everyday adventurers thanks to the thoughtful, functional details that make up every Finisterre garment. From a humble workshop in the tiny village of St. Agnes, Tom and his team have imbued their clothing with the region’s breathtaking coastal landscape and England’s centuries-old maritime heritage. There might be no better example than the

name Finisterre itself. It’s a name shared with a region of the sea featured in the beloved BBC radio shipping forecast. “Insomniacs listen to it because of its poetic, rhythmic feel. Daydreamers like me listen and imagine being miles out in a tiny boat during a big storm. Seafaring sailors listen because of critical information on weather conditions. It’s sort of romantic. And I think we’re a romantic brand,” says Tom, quickly adding, “but in terms of innovation, fabrics, sustainability, we’re quite serious.” As serious as the beep of a pager at 3:00 am. Read more at: Huckberry.com/tom-kay Tip: Need to catch some z's? You can listen to all past broadcasts of the shipping forecast on the BBC Radio 4's website. Prepare to drift off.

What is this? How did this get here? Who made this? And, how? These searching questions pop up for our crew time and time again in Cornwall as we explore the ruins of Bronze Age and Medieval ritual grounds dotted all around the region. Someone unfamiliar with the work of Tom Raffield could be forgiven for running through the same series of questions. Ribbon-like twists, perfect loops, and wavy curves are all formed by seamless planks of solid wood. Maybe we’d spent too much time reading up on Cornish folklore but it’s the kind of thing you could imagine as the work of a forestdwelling wizard. At least half of that description fits Tom. From deep within a dreamy woodland plot in the village of Helston, Tom, his partner and wife Danie, and an ever-

Tom and Danie’s collaborative drafts of a potential new design

growing team of workers have nurtured a thriving furniture design firm centered around Tom’s process for steambending wood. Centuries ago, Vikings used a similar process to build their ships. Luthiers also use the process to craft violins and guitars. But Tom’s method, honed after countless hours tinkering alone in the woodshop, allows for much more ambitious and dramatic forms on an architectural scale. As we walked with Tom through the woods of the property where he and Danie have built a breathtaking home (see pg. 32) and workshop, his love of the land is as clear as a bell. Refusing the advice to move to London from his instructors at the nearby Falmouth Art College, Tom tells us the spectacular landscapes of Cornwall are what kept him

in the area. To an outsider, it seems each time Tom bucks conventional wisdom for the hard road, things have a way of working out. He passed on the conveniences of the big city for a remote slice of woodland. He moved his growing family into a nearly uninhabitable gamekeeper's lodge on that same woodland. And all the while, he’s warped hardwood into never-before-seen forms. Each unorthodox turn contributed to his success. “We just try and do things that don’t exist. Sometimes they’re successful, sometimes they’re not and you learn from it.” Together we loop back from the woods, following the scent of freshly-delivered Cornish pasties to Tom’s sunlit patio while admiring the path he’s taken to get here. read more at: Huckberry.com/tom-raffield 29

SHELTER:

How a Steam-bent Home Took Shape For Tom and Danie Raffield, building a family home was a labor of love

Pay close attention on the drive to Tom and Danie Raffield’s home in Southwest Cornwall. The surroundings are serene—old-growth woods in every direction. As you approach the house, crowds of oak and sweet chestnut trees threaten to swallow the horizon, bending to form a canopy over the road. That’s your subtle hint at what’s to come. It’s precisely this type of bend in a tree that catches

Tom’s eye—forms found in nature are the foundation of his design process. Tom and Danie’s livelihoods and lives revolve around these woods. First, as the focus of their steam-bent wooden furniture design business and second, as the site of their dream home. Given that their work depends on bending solid wood to their will, it’s no surprise that bringing the house to life was no easy task. But

The facade cascades off the structure to form an outdoor bench 32

ingenuity and resourcefulness propelled them over each hurdle. All of the timber used

the house of their dreams is a reality. It’s said that our homes are a reflection of who we are.

To design and make and sell something all from under one roof just gives you such creative freedom. for the home came from the surrounding woods, much of it fallen during storms, saving them a significant chunk of change. Danie’s background as a mathematician and civil engineer came in handy as the site’s project manager. During the extensive build-out, they lived in the claustrophobic stone gamekeeper’s lodge on the property, shuttling themselves and their two small children through the cold to the outhouse to wash up. Fast forward through years of labor in the form of countless long nights and weekends, as well as the arrival of a third child, and

For Tom and Danie it’s their artistic vision made tangible. The steam-bent facade suggests the rolling landscape of their village. The furniture and fixtures were all made on-site in their workshop as the business proved successful. And the wood used for the exterior is untreated, changing appearance and showing its age through the years as their family grows within. See more at: Huckberry.com/steam-bent

Let’s get one thing out of the way. There are some pretty unsavory stereotypes and assumptions out there about British food. The reality is, the country’s cuisine is more nuanced, diverse, and, importantly, delicious than it often gets credit for. Come all ye skeptics to the pulpit of Ben Quinn. With his adventurous catering business Woodfired Canteen and community-focused brick and mortar outpost, simply called Canteen, Ben takes a thoughtful and loving approach to even the simplest dishes. A major component of his cooking is live fire. It’s here that the assumptions one might draw when first meeting Ben start to crumble. Tall and broad, he cuts quite a figure, like the former rugby player he is. He’s often photographed with a hatchet in hand, given

his preference for cooking over an open flame. For anyone else, these traits could form the kind cartoonish notion of masculinity Ben rejects. In an industry disproportionately dominated by men, his heroes are women—his current and former co-workers, his wife, the family members he spied on in the kitchen as a child. The common thread is that everyone Ben looks up to embodies a trait he’s dubbed “quiet awesome.” It’s a modest form of badassery and a humble reverence for craft that stands in opposition to the self-important chest thumping rampant in a generation of chefs often more focused on getting a TV deal than providing a service to their communities. Another head fake comes when Ben says he’ll be teaching us how to make a traditional English breakfast. If

you’re picturing bacon, blood sausage, eggs, toast, and beans like we were, you’re way off course. Instead, Ben walked us through how to make a kedgeree. Originally brought to the UK hundreds of years ago by British soldiers stationed in India, the dish has evolved and become a staple. Ben’s version includes wood-fire smoked mackerel, eggs, basmati rice, and plenty of curry powder. We dig in, the conversation cut off by full mouths, as we stare across the Atlantic Ocean from the rocky edge of Trevaunance Cove. Quiet. Awesome. Read more at: Huckberry.com/canteen
