Making a Splash in Puerto Rico

Making a Splash in Puerto Rico Beyond the palm trees and beaches, discover a few of the people and places shaping the future of the island

You've seen the headlines. Devastation descended on the island of Puerto Rico with the back-to-back hurricanes of Irma and Maria. Before that, news of mind-boggling government debt and an injured economy. Here in these pages, we have something else entirely. Some of my most treasured memories took place on this island. As a child, I ran like the wind through the lush, green mountain town where nearly every resident is a member of my family. What struck me as I followed the news in Puerto Rico from the comfort of the States was the absence of the island's vitality, vibrance, and humanity in the media's coverage. Nearly two years since Maria, many people stateside have expressed confusion on whether the island is ready for travelers. So as we brainstormed locations for this catalog, the jaw-dropping natural splendor and the generosity and strength of Puerto

Rico's residents echoed in my mind. We chose Puerto Rico as the proving ground for our summer gear—not just to show the world, yes, you can visit—but to highlight a few of the faces and places that make this island so resilient. There's a different flavor of paradise here for every traveler's interest—serene screensaver-like beaches, a food and beverage identity all its own, adrenaline-pumping outdoor recreation. Through our adventure around Puerto Rico and conversations with a local climber and disaster relief responder (pg. 30), the founder of a homegrown cocktail empire (pg. 10), and a surf-obsessed chef (pg. 21), we hope these pages offer a look beyond the dreary headlines and into what makes this island one of the richest places on earth, no matter what comes its way. - Luis Angel Cancel, Huckberry Managing Editor

Sabah Sabahs are cut and sewn entirely by hand according to Turkish tradition that dates back to 1880, but updated with a city-friendly clean design and resoleable rubber soles that increase their lifespan to just about infinity. That kinda longevity fit right in on a walk through Old San Juan, the historic Spanish colonial neighborhood flanked by 16th century military forts active as recently as WWII.

He takes a sip, and from the look on his face, you can tell he's disappointed. He's been lured into one of the many tourist-trap bars on the island that claims to have invented the Piña Colada but has been handed a canned pineapple and slushy machinemade concoction that feels like a far cry from an old world stroke of genius. The dissatisfied diner in question is Anthony Bourdain, and in a several-years-old episode of No Reservations, you can see the legend himself looking a bit let down by Puerto Rico's cocktail offerings. A lot has changed. These days, no thirsty wanderer has any excuse to sip a sub-par cocktail, thanks to Leslie Cofresí. He, too, was frustrated by the limits of the island's beverage scene and decided to do something about it. In 2013, Leslie and his team secured a huge, historic building in Old San Juan and transformed it into La Factoría—a sprawling, multi-room, bar-scene-withina-bar that's become the beating

heart of Puerto Rico's cocktail renaissance. The venue's landed itself on the prestigious World's 50 Best Bars list for three consecutive years and has allowed Leslie to further his mission of making Puerto Rico the Caribbean's premier craft cocktail destination. In the years since La Factoría's rapid ascent, he's opened Caneca, an open-air cocktail kiosk, and JungleBird, a distinctly Puerto Rican spin on the tiki bar in his hometown neighborhood of Santurce. JungleBird is where we first meet Leslie and get a peek into what's made this bar a labor of love for him. As fans of the tiki bar scene and the classic cocktails that emerged from it, Leslie and his team sought to pay homage without playing copycat. Rather than using the typical tiki design tropes of Polynesian idols, they researched iconography of the Taíno tribe, Puerto Rico's native people, and implemented indigenous motifs into the decor of the space. The result is a place

that feels familiar, but in the details is unlike anywhere else. And it goes without saying, but the drinks certainly don't disappoint. Full story and cocktail recipe at: Huckberry.com/junglebird Cocktail Recipe/Receta de Cóctel

Adíos Pantalones This suggestively named, potent cocktail takes tiki tradition for a Latin American spin with the addition of pisco, a brandylike spirit originating in Peru and Chile.

Ingredients • 1 oz vodka • 1 oz Tabernero pisco • 1 oz pineapple juice • 3/4 oz spiced simple syrup • 3/4 oz lime juice • 1 dash of Angostura bitters

Directions Combine ingredients and shake with ice. Strain into a chilled coupe glass and garnish with pineapple and grated nutmeg. 11

Provisions/Provisiones:

Where in the World is Dario Tani? Some celebrities were name-dropped, others kept private. There were mentions of Connecticut. The south of France. Waves in Kauai. Mega yachts. Conversations with private chef-slash-surfer Dario Tani (@chefdariotani) feel like speed-reading The Robb Report. Through his profession as a cook-for-hire he's constantly traveling, whipping up meals for clients in ridiculously opulent settings. At home, however, he lives a much simpler life. Dario's obsessed with surfing—he had enough boards in his quiver to provide for each member of our crew. He's more interested in local agriculture than the restaurant scene. And above all, he's committed to his community, assisting Sylvia in the reconstruction of Finca Victoria (pg. 36) and hosting pop-up meals on the island. We managed to catch Dario just before another trip stateside. From the kitchen of La Finca, he cooked up some papaya and kimchi-topped arepas and helped us polish off a bottle of Barrilito rum poolside. Why Hemp? This naturally miraculous fabric has a history that can be traced all the way back to 8000 BC, yet somehow has remained a bit of a best-kept secret. For starters, it's one of the most planet-friendly fabrics on, well, the planet. What makes hemp even more special for apparel is its hefty list of natural properties—ultra-soft, breathable, antimicrobial, and super strong. That's why Wellen has chosen hemp as the foundation for nearly everything in their lineup.

Responsible Purchasing

Most of the environmental impact of apparel occurs at the raw materials stage. That's why Wellen apparel is crafted exclusively from organic, recycled, or Bluesign-certified fabrics that feel great on your skin and wear in, not out

Wellen only partners with factories that lead the industry in sustainability practices. For example, almost all water and scraps generated in the creating of a Wellen garment are upcycled into everything from water for local farmers to bricks

Wellen is committed to small batch manufacturing. The apparel industry has massive overstock problems, sending unsold merchandise into landfills. Our limited runs ensure every Wellen garment gets its day in the sun.

Nearly a decade ago, the only rock climbing gym in San Juan was a disaster. It was staffed by young students that had no interest in the sport. Equipment was scarce. Routes were never updated. The community of serious climbers was nearly non-existent. Accidents and injuries were common and, in no time, the gym closed. It was within this ill-fated gym that Bryant Huffman first dreamt of opening a bouldering gym of his own. It takes a colossal amount of ambition to see the prospects of your passion crumble right in front of you and decide to go for it anyway, but that's just what Bryant did. He was part of a tiny community falling in love with climbing in Puerto Rico and was certain a local appetite for the sport would grow. Along with a small crew of like-minded friends, Bryant sought out climbing spots all around the island, cleared trails, and tapped his unbridled enthusiasm to become Puerto Rico's most visible rock climbing

Finishing touches—Bryant drills in test holds for a problem at El Bloque ahead of their grand opening

evangelist. He founded Climbing PR, a touring company that guides visitors and locals alike to outdoor crags. Over the years, the scene began to steadily grow.

The gym was always the goal, but I knew we couldn't make it happen until we first built up local momentum and interest for climbing outdoors. When Hurricane Maria struck, Bryant and his climbing buddies sprung into action, employing their strength and skill to climb felled trees and scale buildings to retrieve personal effects trapped by the storm's wreckage. All the while, after long days cutting trees to clear roadways, Bryant would retreat to a warehouse for more woodcutting, sawing the hundreds of angular boards that form the climbing walls of his very own

gym, El Bloque. We met up with Bryant as he was putting some of the finishing touches on the space. While there was still plenty left to do when we arrived, it wasn't hard to imagine the place filled with a new generation of climbers, solving problems and getting hooked on the thrill of overcoming their own personal limits. Shortly before our arrival, El Bloque had just held their soft-opening event with a promising turn-out. Bryant enthusiastically showed us a video of his friend's young daughter deftly speeding up one of the problems set just for the night. If the crowd at the event was any indication, the island is ready. El Bloque is the first true bouldering gym of its kind, not just on the island, but in all of the Caribbean—a monument to resilience, community, and sticking to your guns, no matter how insurmountable the challenge. SHELTER/REFUGIO:

Paradise Lost and Found On the small island of Vieques, a peaceful, dream-like oasis enters its second act

Travel's not always glamorous. The business of getting to your destination is often full of delays, hunger, and restless impatience. With any luck, you'll end up at Finca Victoria, an eco-lodge on the island of Vieques. "I noticed your shoulders dropped when you arrived," Sara, one of the keepers of La Finca, told me as she walked us around the grounds. It was true. Finca Victoria has such a peaceful, utopian feeling about it, relaxation washed over me and it was impossible to imagine a bad day here. Yet as hard as it was to fathom, the property has had its share of strife. Hurricane Maria

destroyed most of its original structures and the future of this oasis remained in question. Sylvia DeMarco, Finca's current proprietor, emerged as its savior. 15 years ago, in the midst of a career in film, Sylvia began what

When asked about my favorite place to visit from all my travels, I'd say without hesitation, 'La Finca in Vieques' would become routine visits to the property and struck up a close friendship with its previous owner, Corky. "When asked about my favorite place to visit from all my travels, I'd say without hesitation,

From left: Botas, Maga, Venus, and Lotus, the property's furriest residents—what paradise is complete without dogs? 36

'La Finca in Vieques,'" Sylvia tells us. The land and lodge had inspired Sylvia, a Puerto Rican native, to move back to the island from New York and start a hotel of her own, the enormously popular Dreamcatcher in San Juan.

Following the hurricanes, Sylvia offered to help re-build the place that inspired her new path and Corky was so struck with Sylvia's commitment to the project, she passed the property on to Sylvia. In the short span of time Sylvia's been at the reins, she's managed to revitalize La Finca to such a degree that it appears to have never even witnessed a storm. Inspired by this victory over trying circumstances, she christened the lodge with the name Victoria... Read the full story at: Huckberry.com/lafinca

Finca Victoria Casa Botánica y Hotel Rt. 995, Km 2.2, Vieques 00765 @finca_victoria

Getting There The island of Vieques is smack-dab between Puerto Rico and the British Virgin Islands. Ferry boats run consistently from the town of Ceiba (roughly an hour's drive from San Juan) but if you'd rather take to the skies, 10-minute plane rides are also available for $40.

Around the Island Unwinding and disconnecting are the name of the game here but there are a few bars and cafes dotted around Vieques. The one thing you can't miss? A glass-bottom kayak tour of the nearby bioluminescent bay at night. Home to a micro-organism that gives off an otherworldly neon glow, it's an experience unlike any other. Ask the staff at La Finca to connect you with a local guide—we can't recommend it enough.

In the '80s, a raucous punk band by the name of Descendents steadily built up a diehard fanbase with a hyperactive sound and a front-man that was the antithesis of a rock star. Their singer Milo Aukerman was moonlighting with the band while pursuing a degree in molecular biology, eventually ditching music to work as a professor at the University of Delaware. Sitting in Café Comunión, I catch a glimpse of Milo—well, the caricature of him that forms the band's logo—tattooed on the café's owner, Ábner Roldán. In a funny way, things start to make sense. Abner's trajectory runs the opposite direction. His fascination with coffee developed while he was a teacher. Each day, Ábner would hightail it from school to his second job in a coffee shop where his role reversed and he became a student of everything that went into the craft. Together with his wife Karla, also a former teacher, they dove head first into the world of coffee, studying its

cultivation, the politics surrounding the crop on the island, and the delicate art of serving a perfect cup. Once Ábner left his teaching job, things kicked into high-gear. He was crowned champion of Puerto Rico's National Latte Art competition in 2014 and 2015 which brought on a wave of international opportunities, landing him and Karla in Sweden, Australia, and Italy before deciding to hone their trade in the coffee-obsessed city of Portland, Oregon. The plan was to soak up all the operational knowledge they could and open a shop of their own back in Puerto Rico but shortly after their return to the island, Hurricane Maria made landfall and damaged the storefront they'd secured. Rather than wait for repairs, they took to the streets, offering drip coffee curbside to offer a sense of normalcy to their neighbors. Today the shop reflects every facet of Abner and Karla's journey—a community-centered meeting

At first, we felt paralyzed and didn’t know what to do, but with the support of our community we decided to not wait for the repairs and to start selling drip coffee on the curb in front of the shop. place offering an education in craft coffee culture, a peaceful respite from whatever challenges lie outside its doors.
