Gear and Inspiration 72 Hours in Maine

72 Hours in Maine Seven years ago, my ski buddy Richard and I quit our jobs to start Huckberry out of our San Francisco apartments. There were already men’s stores, sure. Adventure magazines, too. Yet nothing out there spoke directly to us — guys who lived in the city but lived for the outdoors — and we envisioned a brand that was equal parts store, magazine, and inspiration. Thankfully, we found a likeminded community, and thanks to their support — your support — today we’re still independent and having the time of our lives. For our latest adventure, we packed our favorite fall gear and headed east to Maine, a state that’s a Huckberry blood brother of sorts: our head of Brand Partnerships Ben O’Meara grew up in South Portland; our Director of Business Development Micah McKay went to school at Bowdoin; and our ambassador Nick LaVecchia (seen here moments before diving in to shoot the cover of this catalog) lives in York. Equipped with their local intel, we set out to explore the Maine not found on postcards. What we found is that this new generation has a deep spirit of adventure, and, like the name of Maine’s unofficial soft drink, plenty of moxie — Maine inhabits its people, not the other way around. We hope you enjoy this travelogue of our brief time in Maine, and that our trip inspires an adventure of your own. See you out there.

Average wait time to get a lobstering license in Maine

What’s the Catch?

We took a ride on the Lady Catherine, owned and operated by father-son lobstering duo Peter and Eric Pray (childhood friend of our own Ben O’Meara) in Casco Bay, Maine, for a behind-the-scenes look at a day in the life of a lobsterman. In-between pulling up traps and tickling lobster bellies (see back cover), Eric shared with us some wisdom you'll only find out on the water. Why don’t you wear your wedding ring out on the water?

You can get it snagged on a piece of wire that might be rusted off the trap, or it could get caught in the hydraulic hauler. Basically, your ring gets caught, and you’re pushing something overboard, that ring could take you, or take your hand right off.

What’s the strangest thing you’ve ever pulled up in a trap? Every time we pull up a lobster trap, it’s like opening a Christmas present. Once we pulled up a Native American axe head that was dated over 4,000 years old. It’s actually on display in the Maine State House now. It’s one of the biggest axe heads ever found in Maine, probably a good 18-20 inches long.

four times since college. Small sabbaticals. But I always get drawn back in. You know, I grew up on the water. I can’t see myself working in an office. It’s just an addiction, you know?

How do you wind down after a long day out on the water? A few cold beers, a cold shower, and then I just relax with my two kids and my wife. If I take a warm shower when I get off the boat, I instantly want to take a nap.

Any advice for getting started in the lobster business? If you want to get into the industry, get into the management. Read the whole interview: Huckberry.com/catch

What makes a good lobster? It’s all about the season. In the summer, the water’s warmer, and they shed their shells. It’s a sweeter meat, because they get exposed to more salt water.

Have you ever thought about doing something else for a living? I’ve already walked away from this

6 Steps to Eric’s ‘‘Lazy Man Lobster’’ When you work as hard as these guys, you don’t want dinner to be a chore. Eric’s favorite way to eat lobster front-loads the hardest part so you can just kick back and enjoy the meal. 1

Pour two inches of seawater (or salted water) in a big pot

2

Set steaming rack inside and bring to a boil over high heat

3

Add your lobstah and cover with lid

4

Steam for about 10 minutes — while waiting, melt some butter

5

Carefully lift the lid, take that sucker out, pick all the meat off

6

Pile the meat on a plate with a ramekin of melted butter, enjoy (lazily)

Maine’s New Sole

"It’s that striving to create perfection with imperfect materials that make this thing so beautiful." If you ask Mike Rancourt — whose father made moccasins by hand, whose mother stitched leather in the kitchen when he was a kid — a 3-D printed shoe isn’t quite a shoe. It’s something different altogether. It’s what you’d expect to hear from any Rancourt, who’ve been making shoes in Maine for three generations now, since Mike’s father emigrated from Canada and got into shoemaking in the 1950’s. Kyle is the latest Rancourt to take up the family art of shoemaking, and together the father-son duo lead one of the few outfits keeping the tradition alive and thriving today. Rancourt and Co. Shoecrafters, as they’re officially called, lives in an unassuming building in Lewiston, Maine. No fancy sign. No giant boot. Inside, past the showroom, lies the production floor. Rolling racks of half-finished shoes, well-worn machines, wide rolls of untapped leather, aisles of model lasts lined up like disembodied feet. All around, the hum of double-stitch sewing machines, eyelet punchers, and laser-cutters creates a strange, pleasantly chaotic background noise - but that wasn’t always so. When Mike was first exposed to shoe crafting, it was a different business altogether. Read the whole interview at Huckberry.com/sole

Inside Allagash’s Wicked Nice Brewery Allagash Brewing Co. started in ’95 as a one-man operation in a small corner of a warehouse in Portland, Maine. Since then, they’ve grown to become a favorite of beer lovers coast-to-coast, making their brewery tour a must when in town. While the omnipresent and always-delicious Allagash White makes up the lion’s share of the brewery’s production — around 80% — we found their lesser-known brews to be well worth the journey. We spent most of the tour wondering if we could check a barrel of Ben’s favorite, the Curieux, on the flight home. Here are three favorites you might not find on tap: Hoppy Table Beer, a mild beer that goes down a little too easy Tripel, a strong, complex Golden Ale Curieux, a rich, barrel-aged ale with hints of bourbon

A young man in Aroostook County, Maine, advertising for a wife, speaks of himself as follows: “I am eighteen years old, have a good set of teeth, and believe in Andy Johnson, the starspangled banner, and the 4th of July. I have taken up a State lot, cleared up eighteen acres last year, and seeded ten of it down. My buckwheat looks first-rate, and the oats and potatoes are bully. I have got nine sheep, a two-year-old bull, and two heifers, besides a house and barn. I want to get married. I want to buy bread-and-butter, hoop-skirts, and waterfalls for some person of the female persuasion during life. That’s what’s the matter with me. But I don’t know how to do it.” 49
